Part 14: Phir Se Ud Chala...

Back at Kasauli Police Station:
Asad walked through the station more arrogantly than usual, a small smirk and cocky smile playing on his lips as he saw the police officers all staring at him with pure undiluted dislike, and resentment. Holding a brown paper bag he knocked on Malik's cabin door leaning against it with his back as he glared down a police officer who was trying to get an upper hand at the cocky quotient by putting his handgun in full display of Asad as if it would scare him off or show him his 'place'. All it did was make him roll his eyes and want to laugh out loud. These clowns could be so cute at times. Thankfully before Asad's arrogance and the mutual hatred could cause a scene Malik yelled a 'come in' and Asad twisted the knob walking in. Making Malik smile.
Malik - There you are. I was wondering where my boy had disappeared to. I thought you were going to be a no show.
Asad - Are you that insecure? Don't you know me better than that?
Malik- I was just about to call you, thinking you were planning on ditching me last minute as punishment for assigning the Palace boys as your security detail.
Asad - I don't punish children. They don't know better, so they act in absurd ways.
Malik - Ahh. So now I'm an absurd child.
Asad - Of course. (Raised an eyebrow) Why? You want to tell me you didn't do that out of pure pettiness? You showed both me and the Haveli boys, who is 'in charge'. Made both them and me suffer from the whole arrangement. Bruised our egos and sat back and watched the show. (Malik just started laughing heartedly, getting the last laugh in.)
Malik - Ok I admit. It was pretty damn worth it. You ladies are just so entertaining to watch. More than any soap opera or complicated love story, I'd pay to watch an episode of the Azlan and Asad show. (Asad stared at him not at all impressed or agreeable. Instead he ripped open the brown bag, NEATLY & pulled out a shawarma wrap making Malik's laugh die down.)
Malik - (Stared at Asad with wide eye's) Is that a chicken shawarma from-
Asad - DJ's Mhmm.
Malik - Made specially by-
Asad - Nikhil himself.
Malik- You know That's my-
Asad - (raised an eyebrow at him) Favourite food? I know. (Malik just stared at him and Asad calmly took a small bite of his shawarma completely unfazed by Malik shaking his head at him)
Malik - And you didn't think to bring me one? (Asad shrugged and Malik sighed) - Okay, you made your point. I should've known. You would be mad.
Asad - What else did you expect of me? To thank you and go give the clowns a hug and beg them to detail for me? I can protect myself and the entire student and staff faculty on my own better then they can protect themselves.
Malik - (rolled his eyes) as endearing as it always is to see your love for your own self I called you here for a reason, so let's not waste time chit chatting and get down to business..
Asad - (stared at him with his same damned poker face) Why, are you mad? Mad that I didn't bring you a shawarma?
Malik - No. I'm not childish like you are. (Asad shook his head at him as Malik sighed)
Asad - So., what is it? Pease tell me your finally going to accept that this circus is hopeless and your going to retire.
Malik - (sighed) No Asad, that's not it. I know you dream of me retiring day and night but I'm sorry today is not the day your dreams come true. (Asad just scoffed and Malik sighed, a little hesitant and embarrassed) it isn't what you think it is, but yes, it is about the police force. The 'circus' as you call it. Asad, I know you have your differences with the Law system here-
Asad - More like lack of..
Malik - Yes, but it's still a system Asad and it serves as hope to the people of Kasauli. It lets them know that we're there to help them, protect them and bring them out of their worries and dark days. Believe it or not we try our BEST, with WHATEVER resources we have to help the people of this town to the best of our ability.
Asad - (Trying to keep his voice and the underlying anger in check) With all due respect uncle, just in the past week, three orphan kids were shot and their bodies were left as trophies in the middle of town square. Two days ago, there was an attack on the ELITIST of this town by two KIDS. Despite your entire force being present there to prevent it. And just last night-
Malik - That's exactly what it is though Asad.
Asad - What- Uncle please khul ke bolein aap kya bolna chahte hain. I have no idea what you're trying to say.
Malik - (sighed) You remember when the government began cutting funding off from Kasauli Hospital (Asad nodded) remember what became of the hospital? The whole city, us included blamed the hospital staff; doctors and nurses at their incompetency at doing their jobs. Blamed them for the long line ups, lack of staff, service, attention and immediate medical care for those in need of it. Blamed them for the increased mortality rates. Especially the 150 people who died of food poisoning, 20 children who died of hypothermia and the family of 10 in that car crash all in one day because they didn't have enough staff or tools to save them.
Asad - Yes but-
Malik - Do you remember what that day did to you? You saw the news and just went charging in there against mine and Dilshads protests. You said you were going to make them answer you. Pay for what they'd done. You didn't know how you'd do it but you promised that the people of Kasauli would never see a day like that again.
Asad - (looked down) I had had enough. I just couldn't bury another friend. He was only 22 and he had his whole life ahead of him. He could have easily been saved, if they had enough medication but-
Malik - (nodded) you went in there to teach the doctor a lesson but-
Asad - ended up learning one myself.
Malik - Seeing the doctors and nurses sitting in the morgue amidst those 180 bodies, crying, grieving-
Asad - It shook me. They were more devastated then any of us and I absolutely hated it. I then had no one to blame, no one to turn to for help or force them to fix the situation. I was helpless and I hate being helpless-
Malik - (nodded) so you did what you always do. You came through for the people of Kasauli. and for those doctors and nurses who thought they had failed everyone. You may not have even noticed at that time but you not only saved the people of Kasauli, but you also saved those doctors and nurses because the feeling of failure is not an easy one to live with. You once again proved why it is all of us; Me, your mother, your sister, brother, (sighed) brothers (Asad's surprised eyes snapped up to his face) love and pride you so much. We know that in the wake of any trouble, You always come through. We can rely on you-
Asad - Uncle aap yeh sab-
Malik - (nodded) Unfortunately Asad, Kasauli is seeing a similar day again. You saved our Hospital that day by compensating for the funds the Government had recoiled from the Hospital. Saved those doctors, their dreams and their faith in themselves. But now I..I need you to do the same for my home. My dream and my faith in myself. They are taking our funds the same way Asad. They've been doing it for a while now but I thought I could manage. Turns out (shrugged) I can't. The reason these attacks happen and those responsible for it get away is because we can't do anything even if we wanted. Our force has been cut by half. Your accusations are 200% right Asad. We have disappointed our people time and time again. We've let thousands of innocents die, let families be ruined and let those responsible get away with it time and time again. But not because we wanted to, but because we had no choice. We did the best we could and it just wasn't enough. In the wake of growing crime, how do you expect us to retaliate when we're not fully equipped to do so?
Asad - Kabse chal raha hai yeh sab?
Malik - What difference does it make Asad? I didn't call you here for sympathy or to justify our poor performance because funding or not, it is our job to protect the people of this city and we failed to do so. But I don't want to continue failing Asad. I asked you here instead of home for the same reason. I didn't want your mother hearing. I-..I'm just, I'm embarrassed. You intervened that day and saved our hospital before any more innocent lives were lost without even a chance, a fight and I'm asking you to do the same. I just felt like, I could count on you to-
Asad - (held his uncles hand with slightly dampened eyes, But a determined look in his eyes nonetheless) Yes.
Malik - Ye-
Asad - Yes. Uncle, the only reason I asked you since when this has all been happening is because I knew you would be embarrassed and would've kept it from me even though (shook his head) you never need to be embarrassed before me uncle (looked down, his shame visible on his face) not after, after all that you've done for me. You have seen me in my darkest days, at my lowest. I was sinking, drowning and I couldn't see it. Not only did you see it but you also pulled me out from that darkness. Saved me before I drowned. All that I am today, I am because of you. All that I own today is yours uncle. Aapko poochne ki nahin hukam karne ki zaroorat hai aur aap jo chaho main aapke saamne hazir kar doonga. Yeh toh phir ek choti si rakam hai.
Malik - (laughed) Oh I don't know, wait till you hear the zeros-
Asad - It could be all the zeros in the world uncle, it still wouldn't be enough to repay what you did for me. (Malik smiled at him, his pride visible in his eyes and nodded putting his hand on top of their clasped ones)
Malik - Thank You beta. I knew I could count on you.
Asad - But I do have two conditions.
Malik - I knew that too (laughed) Boliye.
Asad - 1) You must understand one thing. I'm doing this for you, at a personal level. See I fund the hospital because I believe those doctors to be for real. They are competent and know what they are doing. You people on the other hand (shook his head) I stand by what I said. You're running a circus, with or without funds.
Malik - (rolled his eye's) and in answer to your second demand. Yes. It will remain our secret.
Asad - (looked surprised) I didn't even say anything yet.
Malik - You didn't have to.
Asad - (gave him a ghost of a smile) So, I'll see you at home for dinner then?
Malik - I guess so.
Asad - (stood up) I'll have my accountant call you, you can set up whatever payment method you find convenient and figure out all the smaller details as well.
Malik - Thank You Beta. (Stared at him with all the pride shining through in his eyes) I don't know what we or this town would've done without you.
Asad - You definitely wouldn't be having shawarma for lunch that's for sure (He winked at him as he placed a paper bag from the ground onto Malik's desk before walking out swiftly lest Malik embarrass him with more compliments or emotions and Malik just smiled shaking his head after him)

Haveli:
Anaya was sitting on the stairs, staring ahead with tears in her eavesdropping onto the conversation in the living room.
Javed - Par Agar Rashid ke kehne se woh maan jaati hai toh iss mein kya burai hai?
Razia - Agar aapko khud burai nahin dikh rahee toh main aapki koi madad nahin kar sakti phir! Rashid uske liye ek Paraya Mard hai, Woh uske bachon ka baap ho sakta hai par woh Hamari behen ka shahaur hai aur hum usse aisi badchalan aurat, Ek dayan ke paas nahin bhejeinge chahe kuch ho jaye!
Salma - Apni zubaan ko lagaam do Razia. Yeh mat bhoolo ke woh aurat ek waqt pe iss ghar ki bahu thi aur aaj bhi iss haveli ke waarison ki maan hai!
Shireen - Nahin Ammi. Iss haveli ke waaris ki maan MAIN hoon. (Razia smirked as the rest stared at her surprised at her courage for speaking up, the venom in her voice but they were also at a loss for an answer)
Maya - Toh aap log phir kya chahte hain? Ek toh aap log Zabardasti YEHI rishta karwane pe tule hue ho aur phir usse jorne ki koshish bhi nahin karna chahte. Aapne suna na ke Haseena bi ne kya kaha? Woh tab tak sagai nahin kareingi, jab tak Anaya ka lehnga na banke aaye. Dilshad ke haathon.
Razia - Humne suna ke Haseena ne kya kaha par shayad aapne bhi Rashid miyan ki tarha poori baat nahin suni. Bas Dilshad ka naam hi suna. Haan Haseena ne bola ke woh sirf tabhi sagayi karne ayegi jab lehnga Dilshad ke haan se banke ayega aur Dilshad ko mananana HAMARI Zimedari hai. HAMARI. Matlab ke hum sab ki. Usne ek baar bhi yeh zimedari kissi ek insaan ko nahin di, Haas taur par rashid ko toh bilkul nahin.
Rashid - (sighed deeply) Bhabi please samajhne ki koshish karein main Dilshad ko sabse kareebi se aur ache se jaanta hoon agar main koshish karoon toh-
Suleman - (lost in thought) Nahin Rashid. Razia shayad theek hi keh rahee hai (they all looked towards him truly bewildered. Did he just side with Razia? Haan yeh sach hai ke Dilshad ko hum sabse kareebi se tum hi jaante ho par iska matlab yeh bhi hai ke usse sabse zyaada takleef bhi tumhee ne di hai. Tum agar uske paas jaoge yeh bolne ke please meri beti ka lehnga bana do toh socho uspe kya beetegi? Baat bane ke bajaye bighad sakti hai. Woh pichle 25 saalon mein apne aur apne bachon pe beeti har takleef yaad karke inkaar bhi kar sakti hai. Issi liye behtar yehi hoga ke tum na jao. (Rashid just stared at him in disbelief. Beyond frustrated with them. Why couldn't they see reason? Without saying another word he got up and walked out of there as the argument heated up further. Anaya wiped her tears when she felt someone silently hug her and kiss her head. She looked up to see Azlan sitting on the step right above her and smile a sad but encouraging smile at her. He didn't say anything and at that point she didn't need him to. He wanted her to believe everything would be okay and she wanted to believe him. She held onto his protective arms and just closed her eyes. Feeling her self respect take blow after blow. First to live with the fact that she had to accept this relationship to be her only acceptable option if she wanted a marriage at all, secondly to live through all absurd hurdles that came up day after day. Be the cause of so much distress to everyone especially her father who had to face his past only to get rid of a burden like her.)

Asha's Cafe:
Sheila caught Zoya just in time as Zoya jumped getting startled by a gust of wind that flew outside and the open door led Zoya's hair to fly all of a sudden, scaring her, which nearly caused her to drop an entire pot of coffee on the ground. Sheila stared at her confusedly. Her eye's wild with worry as she held a slightly trembling and very pale and frightened Zoya. Nothing like the fearless and feisty Zoya she was starting to know and love.
Sheila - Zoya, are you sure you're okay? You're feeling perfectly okay? (Feeling her forehead)
Zoya - (took in a deep breath to calm her hyperactive nerves. Paranoid and afraid that Sameer would show up out of nowhere and try something, and what if she were unable to stop him. What if this time he got what he always wanted and what he set out to get in the first place) (closed her eyes) Yah I just-
Sheila - (shook her head) No. Okay you know what, you're done. Go home. You're done for the day.
Zoya - (her surprised eyes snapped open) What? No, my shift doesn't end for another 2 hours.
Sheila - Well it just ended, so go home. There's no point of you staying here when your not actually here. Go home, eat dinner, sleep peacefully and get some rest. I'll see you Monday. You sure you can get home okay or should I call-
Zoya - (rushed to answer immediately lest she call Dilshad..or worse Asad. That is the last thing she needed right now. More favours or a lecture or scolding session from Akdu) No, No I'll walk. The fresh air will help.
Sheila - You sure? (Zoya nodded) K then, See yah!
Zoya - Bye! (She went to the back and collected her knapsack, books, iPad and jacket before heading out)
She couldn't have been down two blocks on the usually deserted night streets of Kasauli when she felt a chill run down her spine causing her to stop in her tracks. Her whole body breaking into goosebumps and trembling. Her teeth clattering with fear as her eye's darted left and right in fear. She felt the hair at the back of her neck stand up and she spun around but found no one there. Allah Miyan. Only she knew the relief that washed over her in that second. She felt her heart pound in her chest and put a hand over it as she let out a staggering breath. taking small steps ahead.
Zoya - (shaky breath) Allah Miyan! I could've sworn someone was following me (she took a few steps forward when that feeling returned again and she spun around., looking around all four sides this time. Just to be extra cautious and use Zoya logic she looked up in the sky and rooftops too, but found no one. Again Zoya hugged herself tight and took hurried steps forward when then the trauma and shock from this mornings incident came crashing down on her again and the fear and paranoia got the better of her. Before she knew it, she had begun sprinting down the streets, the blocks of Kasauli. Desperate to reach home safe and sound. Praying to Allah Miyan to not let anything happen to her.
He stood on the rooftop of the building, dressed in all black as usual. His leather jacket on and his chains, similar to Zoya's, shining in his neck as he bent down at the edge of the rooftop, smoking his cigarette watching her run away. Away from him)

Khan Mansion - Living Room:
Dilshad - Yeh to bauhat hi acha kiya aapne Malik bhai ke aap khaane pe aa gaye. Main toh warna khud aapko phone karke bulane hi waali thi. Kitni baar bola hai maine aap ko ke raat ka khaana aap hamare saath hi khaaya kijiye, aap apne ghar pe akele khaate hain yeh mujhe bilkul bhi acha nahin lagta. Hamare ghar pe bhi sirf hum teen hi toh hote hain (stared at Asad with a very unhappy look) well actually hum do. (Asad rolled his eyes directly at her and her taunt)
Aisha - Do the, ab toh hum teen hain. Are you forgetting Zoy- (before she had even finished Zoya's name Asad had jumped in)
Asad - (irritated) How could anyone forget her? She's not one to let you forget so easily. Aur (looked to his watch) raat ke 8:30 baj rahe hain woh ab tak ghar nahin ayee..kahan hai woh? Aisha call her and ask (Malik and Aisha stared at him in bewilderment)
Dilshad - Aa jayegi Asad. She probably has a late class or no..(remembering) she-
Asad - (absent mindedly) no she's not at college. I brought her home with me in the afternoon..
Aisha - You, You what? (Asad's eyes widened as he stared at her and Malik, Dilshad's surprised faces, frustrated with himself for being unable to control his tongue)
Asad - Woh actually...
Malik - (smiled) Oh. So the girl sitting on the front seat of your sports car, that was Zoya? (Asad's ears reddened as Dilshad stared at him surprised and Aisha's mouth hung open)
Aisha - You let her sit in one of your sports cars!! Which are the most sacred things to you! You've never let ME sit in your sports car, you always chauffer me around in your dada aboo waali gaadis..
Dilshad - (pulling a sad face) tumne toh aaj tak apni maa ko bhi apni sports cars mein nahin bathaya
Asad - (stared at her with a baffled expression) Ammi-
Malik - Samjha karo na Dilshad Behen. There are rules for these things. Sports cars mein maa ko nahin..k- (before Malik could finish that sentence and they could continue with the teasing A horrified Asad intervened now scared by the truth behind those accusations, by what Malik may say next (afraid it may be true) and by his own impulsive choices. It was true. He never let anyone touch his sports cars because he was so possessive about them. They were his babies. his most prized possessions and yet he had let her get away with destroying multiple sports cars of his and now even let her sit in one)
Asad - Agar aap logon ki yeh fazool baatein hatam ho gaye hon, can you please call her and ask her where she is?
Malik - (looked at the time) Haan. Jokes aside I agree with Asad. It's not safe to be out at this time. Abhi kal raat ko hi..I don't know if you heard but Ayaan ke nightclub se- (Asad and Aisha's eyes snapped towards each other and then to Malik's face) wait, it's probably on the news right now (As Malik turned the TV on a still shaken and even more pale Zoya walked in. Out of breath from her jog home. She really didn't look well, but as always hid her pain, fear and worries behind her smile so no one would find out and, as she craved, worry for her)
Dilshad - (smiled lovingly at her) Look who's home.
Asad - (not looking at her) A bit early..no? (Zoya didn't even bother responding, much to Asad's surprise)
Malik - (smiled at her and winked) Hello beautiful.
Zoya - (laughed, besides her current state) Hell Uncle Handsome (Malik laughed at that much to Asad's annoyance)
Malik - Zoya, bauhat hi lambi umar hai tumhari. hum abhi tumhare baare mein hi baatein kar rahe the-
Zoya - Mere baare mein-
Asad - Hey Malik Uncle (looking at Zoya through the corner of his eye's) can you turn the volume up (Malik turned the volume on the TV up which was running news about some girl being kidnapped and Asad continued looking at Zoya through the corner of his eye's while Zoya read the news. Her face fast losing all the colour and warmth it had regained) so she was kidnapped from Rogue?
Malik - Yah. From that honey Singh concert that happened last night. Her poor parents, they didn't even know she was there. She had snuck out with her friends who didn't even realize she had gone missing. They only realized when her parents started showing up at everyone's houses asking about her this morning (shook his head). I felt horrible for them. The way her mother was crying and her poor father, he was falling apart. He's lived in Kasauli long enough to know how slim the chances of us finding her are. She would be lucky to still be alive. That is if they haven't sold her off for money, organs, prostitution (Zoya's body shuddered at those possibilities. Allah Miyan what kind of a place was this? Filled with so many monsters. She started remembering that girl being forced into that car outside Rogue last night. She shuddered again, feeling someone's intense and very angry gaze on her and she didn't have to look up to see who it was. She gulped nervously knowing Asad was glaring down at her as he stood from the sofa he was sitting on)
Asad - No Malik uncle. don't you know how important it is for some people to go see a Honey Singh concert. Against personal safety, against their PARENTS wishes or even direct ORDERS not to go.
Zoya - (narrowed her eyes at him. Not very happy with his attitude and treatment of her as if she were a child who constantly needed permission and protection to go out) and don't you know Malik Uncle, how impossible it is for some people to understand THEY CAN'T order people around to do as they please!
Asad - don't you know Malik Uncle it's impossible for some people to respect anyone's rules, traditions or values-
Zoya - Don't you know Uncle how hard it is for someone to STOP judging others-
Asad - Don't you know, some people just don't know their limits. Always overstepping lines..
Zoya - and let me guess your problem with that is the lines aren't straight enough and you can't help your OCD (She touched a nerve, especially as the bewildered expressions of Dilshad, Aisha and Malik soon turned in to snickers at Zoya's jibe about his OCD, immediately riling Asad up. A muscle jumping dangerously in his jaw as he controlled his anger by clenching his fists. An angry shudder ran through him)
Asad - You're impossible (saying so, he stalked out of there and Zoya glared behind his back)
Zoya - You are impossible too! (Saying so she also stalked away to her own room. Making Dilshad, Aisha and Malik look back to each other with amused smiles on their faces)
Dilshad - I think that's the most immaturity Asad has ever shown. Even from when he was a child
Aisha - (laughed) even then he used to act like hum sab ka baap (Dilshad nodded)
Dilshad - Well, in that case Zoya ne toh na mumkin ko mumkin kar diya..
Malik - (smiled staring after them both) Waise Dilshad Behen mujhe to lagta hai ke Asad ki zindagi mein bilkul aisi hi ek ladki aani chahiye, jiske andar uske saamne khare hone ki taakat ho. (Dilshad looked in the direction he was with a small smile on her face as she pondered over his words)
A little while Later -
Aisha, Dilshad Zoya walked Malik to the front door..
Zoya - Par Uncle maine jaan boojke thora hi apni aur Aapi ki safety jeapordy mein daali mujhe thori hi pata tha ke iss shehr mein concert pe jaana itna dangerous ho sakta hai.
Malik - (smiled) If you're living with Asad I'm sure he must have warned you at least 91736119 times and Forbid you from going.
Zoya - (pouted, like a child being told off for his mistake) Par aap toh Zille Ilahi ko- (Malik burst out laughing just hearing the name and Asad who was about to walk into the foyer stopped in the hallway hearing his absurd nickname. Taking a deep breath to control his mounting anger) unhe har baat se problem hai. Yeh yahan kyun rakha hai woh wahan kyun rakha hai yeh aise kyun hai woh waise kyun hai aise mat karo wahan mat jao yeh mat pehno aise mat karo..bas..chalta phirta question mark! Allah Miyan woh bechari toh wahan sirf honey ko dekhne-
Malik- (narrowed his eye's) wait a minute. 4 ladke, black gaari. Tumhe..tumhe yeh sab kaise pata? Yeh toh sab details humne bahar kissi ko nahin batayee-
Zoya - (sighed) Jab hum Zile-Illahi ke dar se ghar aa rahe the. I saw 4 guys push this girl into a black car. I don't know much but maybe those are the same people.
Malik - Did you see anything else? Anything that could help us with finding her. Come on Zoya think hard. Anything could be relevant. Yeh sab toh humme club ke security tapes se dikh gaya but..kissi ka chehra-
Zoya - (gave him an apologetic smile) No. I didn't see anything else. They had their backs to me. Gaari ka number bhi nahin dikha..
Malik - Well (sighed) We're just thankful you and Aisha are okay. Zoya, please, I am only saying this because I am concerned for your safety as much as I am of Aisha's. If Asad tells you not to go somewhere try not to go. It's a dangerous city and if he tried to stop you it was for your own betterment (He smiled at Zoya as her eyes returned with that feisty look in them and she crossed her arms stubbornly, just refusing to accept her mistake and that he was right due to her ego) I think you owe him an apology. God forbid, that girl could just have easily been you or Aisha.
Zoya- (looked towards him with sad, empathic eye's) woh ladki bach to jayegi na Malik Uncle? (Malik just gave her a sad smile)
Malik - Let's hope. Let's hope the Son of Kasauli is there to save the day as always.
Zoya - (narrowed her eye's) The son of Kasauli? Woh kaun hai?
Asad - (walked in, calmly..but the way his eyes looked to Zoya, one could doubt if his nerves really were that calm) Malik Uncle, you're still here?
Malik - You sound disappointed.
Asad - I am. Come on, leave already.
Zoya - (refrained from rolling her eye's at him) Aap kuch bol rahe the, about the son of Kasauli..
Asad - (glared at him) I don't have time for your latest childish crush. Go Google him. I have to talk to Uncle about something (Zoya narrowed her eye's at him as he walked out with Malik and she muttered under her breath)
Zoya - Jahanpanah.
