Part 6-a
"The Proposal"
Can I have a kite?' saif asked ,watching a child in the distance who was being taught the art of kite flying by her father.
The response she'd always sworn as a child that she was never, ever going to say to her children sprang automatically to Zoya's lips. 'Maybe.'
Dad said I could have a kite.'
Zoya bit her lip.' I said we'll see, Saif,' she said huskily.' Now keep up,please, there's good boy.'
That's Asad uncle!' Zara suddenly shouted as she pointed to the path a litt;e farther ahead.
Asad uncle! Asad Uncle!' oblivious to Zoya' s remonstration not to run ahead, they both ran off.she was left with no choice but to fallow, but at a more sedate pace dictated by the buggy she was pushing.
There was another man with Asad and little girl who looked to be around seven or eight.
Pinning her glassy gaze at some point over Asad'sshoulder, she let her stiff smile embrace all three, aiming for polite but distant. Moistening her dry lips with tip of her tongue , she tucked her resilient curls behind her ears.
Her eyes skimmed over his tall, distinctive figure without focusing. It had taken her a sleepless night to reach an explanation she could live with-namely what she had felt and done, could all be attributed to har overwrought condition. A condition caused due to sleep deprivation, which everyone knew make a person act peculiar.
"Dr.Farooqui..." Asad greeted her with his hand outstretched but she didn't make any effort to take his extended hand on which Asad didn't comment anything but only looked at her with raised eye brows.
A wave of heat washed over her as she looked at him-if she'd been overreacting last night, she still was.
Like her he was casually dressed, in a white tee and black jeans, but unlike her own faded denims that because of her recent weight loss fitted loosely over her hips.
"what a pleasant surprise."
Their eyes touched and she discovered he was lying. He'd known she was going to be here; maybe he'd even followed her. Oh God! Now I think rich and powerful men are following me-I really have lost it.
"Can I introduce my friend Amzad?"
Zoya eyes widened fractionally as she focused on the older man. The thick-set figure, who was almost as broad as he was tall, smiled.
"And this." Asad began, urging the reluctant child forward," is Sehrish, my daughter ," he explained, pride in his voice. "Say hello to Miss Farooqui, Sehrish."
"Hello, Miss Farooqui"
"Hello ,Darling"
" You have very beautiful daughter, Mr Khan."
"Yes , I do."
The little girl dimpled and blushed madly.
"Actually, Dr.Farooqui, it is fortuitous meeting you here. I was wanting to speak with you."
"you did?" whatever Asad wanted to say to her, Zoya was sure she didn't want to hear it." I promised the children they could play on the swings," she said quickly." Another time perhaps."
As she turned away, calling the twins, strong fingers curled around her upper arm, cutting into her flesh through the cotton of her shirt.
"Now."
Startled ,she spun back. Her eyes collided with his and she could see the steely determination shining through his casual attitude.
" Sehrish too is wanting to go to the playground. Amzad will take them whilst we have out little...chat."
"You can have no fears about leaving the children in Amzad's Care; he is more than capable. I would trust with him Sehrish's life."
"Well, after that recommendation what can I say?" she responded weakly. " I'll keep Aisha with me."
"Now shall we sit down?" he suggested, gesturing to a convenient park bench.
" I'd prefer to stand." Asad looked amused by her petty defiance. " As you wish."
"I didn't thinkmy wishes came into it" she remarked, rubbing her arm.
A frown formed on his formidably handsome features. "I hurt you?"
"Don't worry, I'll survive."
Their eyes locked." I m sorry," he said stiffly. " You are so tiny, delicate..." his "glance flickered over her slender frame.
"But tough," she promised him." Now, why don't you do us both a favour and say what you've got to?"Though I really can't imagine what you want to talk to me about."
He met her unfriendly and suspicious eyes. "Are you always this prickly?"
"Prickly?"
"Touchy, irritable, belligerent..." he enumerated, ticking off these characteristics on the tanned fingers of his left hand.
" I am not-" she began, and then saw his expression." I can just think of better things to do with my time. Now plz can I know what you want to talk?"
" Okay , You have been left with the care of your brother's children. Your brother was spender not a saver, and with share prices being as depressed as they are the value of what investments he did have been more than halved."
His eyes sought Zoya's for confirmation but she was too shocked to respond.
"The rest of money is tied up in trusts for children's education. There is the house, of course..." he amused. " After the mortgage is paid off, how much would you say will be left over?"
"You tell me,' she replied hoarsely." You seem to be pretty well informed. How?" She added." How do you know all of this?"
"This how is not important." He brushed aside her angry question impatiently.
"It is to me," she promised. " Why?"
" You are in situation from which there seems no deliverance."
" I happen to have a well-paid job, not by your standards, maybe, but-"
" Ah, yes, your job," he derided softly." The one you enjoy so much. You want to work."
Her eyes narrowed." Is that crime?"
" Not at all, but you no longer have just yourself to consider. You are faced with the dilemma of working mother. High-cost child care, the needs of the children balanced against your desire for career?"
All true and very depressing , though until he'd so easily summerised it she had managed it to put it to back of her mind." Listen, where exactly is this going?" she interrupted, seriously alarmed to hear him calmly discussing things she'd avoided thinkining about herself so far.
" I have solution to put to you, a solution..."
" Why would you want to help me?"
" Marry me."
A strangled laugh emerged from Zoya's throat. She tried to walk away- she didn't exactly relish being target of some sort of sick joke, but she appeared to have lost most of her voluntary motor function.
" The idea of marriage to me is so amusing?" he didn't sound particularly put out.
"I take it that is what passes as a joke where you come from? She finally managed hoarsely. " I suppose the next thing you'll be telling me is You have fallen desperately in love with me?" she gave a slightly wild laugh.
"I would not insult you by suggesting anything so absurd."
" thank you." She returned drily.
" I " he announced, " am your way out of a difficult situation."
" My white knight, in fact.." she suggested.
"See, if you marry me you will be free to pursue your career untroubled by concerns for the children. They will be well provided for."
" You mean you're going to give up your job and become a house-husband? How very modern," she thrilled admiringly.
Her frivolity caused his brows to draw into a dark line of disapprovel" I am getting the feeling that you're not taking this seriously?"
" And that surprise you?" Zoya buried her face in her hands and then slid her hands downwards until just her eyes were revealed. " Tell me, Asad, do I look Mad?"
" No,"he pronounced after several uncomfortable moments of searching scrutiny.
" Well, as you're not about to announce your undying love for me, perhaps we should get down to what this is really about." She folded her arms across her chest and adopted what she hoped was a suitably hard boiled expression. " What would you get from marring me?"
" I get insurance."
" Insurance?" she echoed blankly.
" My daughter's grandparents are trying to contest custody of Sehrish, or ,at least," he corrected, " Their son and his wife are."
" Why would they do that?" Zoya asked, startled.
"Because they think I'm a bad father?"
" No!" Zoya responded without thinking.
"Thank you," he said quietly.
Zoya blushed. " Well, you obviously love your daughter even if you are.."
" A womanising rat with a reputation for violence? That," he continued smoothly before Zoya could agree with or deny his analysis, " is exactly my problem."
