Allah miya! What the hell!" Seher wanted to scream. There before her was a sight most pitiful and there was nothing she could do to change it. There before her, lying on the ground was something she loved from the bottom of her heart. There before her was her dulce de leche ice-cream!
Seher looked up at her offender. "Aapke problem kya hai!" Seher's eyes met a pair of very warm eyes that were clearly showing remorse.
"I am so sorry! Its totally my fault I was on the phone and didnt even see you coming. I should have watched where I was walking."
Ok so he responded to all she wanted to scream at him about. She was going to accuse him of being rude. being blind, not watching where he was walking, all this being his fault, etc... Ugh he just took all the words out of her mouth and all the reasons to vent at him.
"I hope you will forgive me and not take this in any other way. It was really not intentional," he emphasized, and gave her an earnest look. She opened her mouth to speak but didnt know what to say. For once she was speechless! She looked at the stranger before her waiting hopefully for his apology to be accepted. Seher had no idea why but at that moment she didn't find any reason to scream at him. His tone was just too gentle, his demeanor too amiable and his presence too elegant. He clearly was not one of those street boys bumping into girls on purpose. His business casual attire also gave him an aura of classiness. Whoa! Chill girl thought Seher. How was she literally analyzing him on the spot. Or was she just checking him out? She had to admit, he was cute.
"Yes, you should have. Now you dropped my icecream." Despite her thoughts, Seher was not gonna let him go that easy.
"It was my favorite too" Seher sulked. She did love her dulce de leche ice-cream. After doing some shopping at the mall, Seher had gotten her ice-cream and was on her way to her car. She sighed dramatically stealing a glance at him. There was a hint of a smile as his lips curved slightly and his eyes glinted in amusement. His smile and playful eyes made him appear innocent yet cute.
"Ok how about I buy you another one. The ice-cream stand is nearby. I will get you the same flavor too." He said with a genuine smile. That smile. Allah Miya what the hell! Why was his smile making her feel warm and fuzzy inside. Its just a smile! Seher smacked herself mentally. She did need her icecream to calm her overactive mind. She was feeling hot, not warm and fuzzy!
"No its ok. I can buy it on my own. Plus I dont even know you." She said acting like a child refusing a ride from a stranger.
He chuckled. "Rehan Imran Qureshi. There you go. Now you know me. Also, I dropped your icecream. It only makes sense for me to make it up to you. There is nothing else on my mind if thats why your worried." He smiled again! Seher narrowed her eyes. She had to admit, charm came easy to him. He made things sound so natural, easy and spoke so directly. Impressive!
Seher shook herself out of her thoughts. "Ok fine but dont try to act too smart. I am a black belt!" She gave him a mock threantening look.
"Ok I will keep that in mind madam!" As the stood in front of the stand he said, "Ha ek, actually do ice-creams chahiye. Ek dulce de leche aur ek pistachio. I havn't had ice-cream in so long," he added looking at her. Seher had no idea why, but even though she just met this man, she felt strangely comfortable around him. But Seher knew never to trust someone at first sight. But then she was usually very easy going with people. Tho yeh Rehan Imran Qureshi kya cheez hai, she thought.
As Rehan paid for and bought the icecream, he saw the excitement reflecting in the eyes of the girl next to him. She is such a nautanki and drama queen, he thought. But he had to admit, there was something about this girl. He had just met her yet he felt strangely comfortable around her. Rehan barely spoke to people outside of his friend's circle and here he was having such a easy going conversation with a girl whose name he didnt even know.
"Yum! This ice-cream is so good! How is yours?" "Its good! I used to love icecream as a child. My Abu used to being me out everyday. But after he passed away, I have hardly had the time nor company to come out for ice-cream." Rehan let out a soft sigh.
"I am really sorry. Childhood memories with our parents are truly wonderful, enough that we wish they would come back."
"Definitely. I would never forget those days. He passed away when I was five yet I remember so everything about the times I have spent with him. My Ammi, on the other hand, was not very interested in these small things."
Rehan suddenly stopped. He was telling her too much. How was he going on and on about his past to a complete stranger. He composed himself and gave her a small smile. But upon looking into her eyes, he surprisingly didn't see the pity he expected, instead he saw a strange expression which made him him feel... Relaxed. As if what he said was perfectly normal. Maybe it was. Maybe he was just being nostalgic. His Ammi never gave him time anyway. Abu had been the one there for him. But after his death, Ammi married the Nawab of Bhopal and became even more busy. She always claimed to love him more than anything but her love was more over phone calls and laced with words that sounded like adoration and love. But in reality, he had never seen her actually take any interest in what he wanted, what he liked, nor was she there when he needed her.
"My Ammi and Abu are absolutely crazy. So you can imagine my childhood. They love to fight all day yet they love each other to death. Seeing them anyone can believe in true love." Seher quipped.
"So do you?"
"What?"
"Believe in true love?" Where did that come from! Rehan felt like kicking himself.
"I am sorry that came off as a bit too personal." There was a moment of awkward silence but Rehan caught her biting her lower lip. He found himself staring at her. She seemed like she was in some deep thought. The action of biting one's lip was something he usually found as being too attention seeking but on her it was... Cute.
"Its ok I don't mind answering." She said suddenly breaking his train of thoughts.
"Its not that I dont believe in love. But I am not those contantly dreaming or searching for it. Its not like I round every corner hoping love would bump into me" she said laughing and even he chuckled.
"But if love comes I would not let it go." As Seher said those words Rehan felt himself looking into her eyes. (SeHan bgm) For a second he was spellbound. It was as if she was throwing back at him, his own view on love. He was very surprised by her response.
"I totally agree', he added softly as she looked at him and smiled.
"By the way! Its not fair! Hum kitni der se baat kar rahe hai aur mujhe aapka naam bhi nahi pata. Bad manners! I told you my name." Rehan said jokingly.
Seher laughed at that, not giggled nor chuckled but laughed. He found the noise of her laughter so genuine and so real compared to any other he heard before. The bit Rehan could gather was that this girl was very direct and had no qualms voicing her opinion.
"Seher Ahmed Khan."
"Seher Ahmed Khan! Your name sounds very famililar. Are you related to Asad Ahmed Khan by any chance?"
"Yes I am! He is my Abu!" She said proudly. "How do you know him?"
"Well my company is negotiating a new deal with him. While doing market research, I came across an article about your family and hence your name sounded familiar."
"Ohhh stalking me huh? So is this meeting coincidental or is this a way to get my Abu to agree?"
"What to you think Ms. Khan? Would I really buy you a dulce de leche ice cream if my plan was to abduct you?"
"I cant be too sure Mr. Qureshi. What if this is a form of bribe?"
"Rehan. You can call me Rehan."
"Fine then you need to call me Seher!" She said in a threatening tone. Rehan shook his head and smiled.
"Ok Seher! Nope this meeting is definitely coincidental. Otherwise I would have had backup bodyguards prepared to fight your threats," Rehan started to laugh as Seher gave him a look of mock horror. Total drama queen! He thought. But a cute one, a voice in his head added. He chose to ignore it.
"Ok then Rehan, what's your company's name. Let me see what I know from my sources," she teased.
"Ibrahim and Co. My step brother owns it. In fact, he is the one negotiating the deal with your father. If things go well, I may very well head that project after wrapping up the Kohinoor Hotel project that I am currently overseeing." Seher gave him a look of extreme shock.
"Your related to Aahil Raza Ibrahim!" Yeh Chote Nawab ke bhai hai! Abu toh keh rehte ke... Allah miya yeh kaisa confusion hai. Dono bhai mein itna difference." Seher said under her breath.
"Kya hua?"
"Kuch nahi"
"Oh no! Dont tell me ke humare family mein koi purani dushmani hai. Aur ab hum dono ko ek dusre se milne ki sazaa milegi" Rehan said dramatically and Seher couldn't stop her laughter. Guys rarely made her laugh, especially with the dirty jokes and dry humor. But this guy had a cute sense of humor and effervescent charm. Seher silently scolded the voice in her head which was polluting her mind.
"Haha very funny. Bilkul nahi. I am just surprised because Abu did mention the meeting today. I knew the Chote nawab was the one negotiating the deal. I just finding it strange that I ran into you today. Its just a very crazy coincidence!"
"It really is! Never thought I would run into Mr. Asad Ahmed Khan's daughter like this. But it was wonderful to meet you Seher."
"Same here Rehan! But please don't turn formal. My Abu does not mix business with friendly acquaintances and neither do I! I met you before knowing who you were." Rehan gave her a smile. Again! Zaroor iss smile mein koi jadoo hai! Seher thought to herself. As they finished their ice-cream and walked to their respective cars, neither really made the move to leave.
"Well then I guess I will see you around. If the deal works out that it." Rehan said looking at Seher.
"Well if your asking for my number you can directly ask for it." Seher said teasingly and Rehan laughed and held up his hands.
"Guilty as charged. Though I wasn't saying that to get your number. I wouldn't mind you giving it to me." Seher shook her head. This guy was crazy. But she liked that he didn't try too hard to flirt nor did he act over confident. He was quite interesting. It would he nice to get to knos him more. Seher rarely felt that way about anyone. Most people she met, she never wanted to meet again!
After exchanging numbers Seher walked to her car. "Allah Miya! What the hell!" She exclaimed frustratedly looking at her car, a few minutes after Rehan had walked away.
"Uh oh looks like you just got yourself a flat tire," said a voice behind her. Seher turned around.
"I was rounding my car around the block when I saw you staring at your tire as if waiting for it to fix itself" Rehan said biting his lip.
"Allah miya! How could you be so cruel Rehan! Yaha ek bechari ladki phas gayi hai aur aapko mazak lag raha hai. Its one of those moments I wish I had listened to Abu and kept a spare. He definitely was right about this one," Seher said smacking her forehead as Rehan grinned.
"Its ok. I have my car. Let me drop you and later on you can get someone to come fix it. The area is pretty safe for your car but for you to stand here alone would not be the same. Plus its getting a little dark. Which way are you going?"
"Towards the east side. I live in Khan Villa, Its about twenty minutes from here."
"I know where that is! I pass the house so often. Its beautiful!"
"Thank you. It belongs to my father."
" My home is close by. I can definitely drop you and please dont say no. I would feel terrible if you refuse me." Rehan said with a dramatic sigh and wink. Seher shook her head. Bilkul pagal. She checked her car doors, picked up her bags off the ground and got into his car. As they drove off, unknown to them, the leaves blew in the air, the sun started to set and a soft music played. Was this a sign from above? Was this the start of a new love story? Or was it just another tale whose fate was to remain incomplete?
Khan Villa
As the car skidded into the driveway of Khan Villa, Asad opened the front door with Zoya behind him.
"See Mr. Khan I told you Seher called me. She just had a flat tire. She is fine! Aap khamaka pareshaan ho gaye the."
"Well pareshani ki baat hai Mrs. Khan. This is why I told her to keep spare. Aap ki beti bilkul aap pe gayi hai."
"Allah miya! Whats wrong with you Mr. Khan. Ache kaam kare toh aap ki tarah aur kuch galat ho toh meri tarah. Aap-"
"Ammi Abu?!! Aap dono ka nok jhok khatam hua toh main kuch kahun?"
"Kya!" Said Mr and Mrs. Khan together looking at Seher. Seher tossed Rehan a look that said I told you they were crazy.
"Anyway Abu, this is Rehan Imran Qureshi. He is the one who dropped me home." Rehan shook Asad and Zoya's hand and looked at Seher.
"After dropping your ice cream that is." Seher chuckled.
"Its ok you bought me another one and even said sorry!"
"Allah Miya! Thats so cute. So you bought her ice-cream afterward! Mr. Khan aap ko yaad hai, aap ne meri ice-cream gira de aur aap ne sorry tak nahi bola." Rehan and Seher hid their grins as Asad sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Mrs. Khan please! Anyway nice to meet you Rehan!"
"Same here sir. Its a pleasure to meet you both. I heard a lot about you. Its so nice to finally meet one of the greatest architects of Bhopal. I studied architecture for a year and loved it but ended up doing business management"
"Thats really nice Rehan. My daughter Sanam did business and finance."
"Oh yes you definitely need to meet Sanam! Api! Api!" Seher looked at Rehan to gauge his reaction and it was as expected. His expression upon seeing Sanam was priceless.
"Api meet Rehan Imran Qureshi, he gave me a lift after my car had a flat at the mall." Sanam smiled at Rehan.
"Wow you guys are twins. I knew Mr. Asad Ahmed Khan had two daughter but I had no idea they were twins. Thats really cool!" Rehan said smiling and shaking hands with Sanam.
"Pleasure meeting you Sanam. If you dont mind me calling you that."
"Absolutely not and same here Rehan."
"Abu you know Rehan is associated with the new deal you were mentioning. The one with Ibrahim and Co." Seher looked at Sanam to see her suddenly turn pale. Seher realized that Sanam was acting strange for a while. She made a mental note to ask her later.
"Really Rehan. You work in that company?" Seher focused back on the conversation between her father and Rehan.
"Actually Aahil is my step brother. I handle all the big projects and he finalizes the deals. We try to split up the work."
"Yes I recall meeting Mr. Ibrahim earlier."
"Well sir, I hope you do consider our offer. It would be an honor to collaborate with your firm. We can definitely build something creative together."
"Well that the spirit! Architecture is all about function and creativity." Just then Dilshad came to ask everyone for tea and once Rehan was introduced, she offered him tea as well.
"Thank you so much but I should get going Mrs. Khan."
"Well I am Sanam and Seher's Badi Ammi. I expect you to call me that too." Dilshad scolded him gently. Seher smiled on the inside. For some reason she was happy that her family liked Rehan. He was a nice guy so why wouldnt they. But still it made her strangely happy.
"Sure Badi Ammi." Rehan smiled respectfully at Dilshad who gave him an affectionate smile. Seher thought the tone he used with her Badi Ammi was truly respectful and had a touch of aapnapan to it.
"Well it was pleasant meeting all of you. I really do hope I get the chance to work with your company sir." Asad smiled at him.
"I will definitely let you know what my advisors say but things are looking pretty positive so lets see. Anway Rehan thank you so much again for dropping my daughter home."
"Pleasure is all mine," he said smiling at Seher who smiled back. As Rehan drove away, Sanam said, "He seems like a gentleman."
"Bohut hi sweet bacha hai. Buzurk se baate karna jaanta hai. Maine bohot insaan dekhi hai itne saal mein. Mere aankhen dokha nahi khaate. Ek nazar mein hi pata chal jata hai ke kaun kaisa hai aur Rehan wakaye mein ek acha ladka hai."
"Atleast he was not rude. Family mein variety hota hai maine suna tha lekin yeh toh bohut zyaada variety hai. Dono bhaiyon mein bahut fark hai," Asad added.
"Sach mein, kaun keh sakhta hai ke yeh Bhopal ke Chote nawab ka bhai hai. He is defintiely more down to earth," Sanam added bitterly much to Seher's amusement. Sanam really did not like Aahil for some reason.
"He definitely is," Seher added looking at the empty driveway. Sanam gave her a strange look. Seher shrugged as Zoya said, "Ok we all agree that he is nice. How about we call him to dinner one day. I know that look Mr. Khan but you haven't signed any deal with his company yet. So a formal dinner is not needed. Plus he is acquainted with Seher first. So why not." As Zoya and Asad left continuing their bickering and Dilshad went to her room, Sanam looked at Seher.
"So should we invite him?" There was a slight teasing tone to her voice.
"Api! We are not even friends yet. But he does seem nice."
"Toh friends ban jao and then we can invite him," Sanam winked and Seher blushed. Rehan Imran Qureshi had indeed left an impression on her family and maybe her?
As Rehan left Khan Villa he thought about the girl he just met. He laughed to himself thinking about her theatrics. Defintely pagal! As he reached close to home he got a call from his housekeeper Latif. "Hello Latif? What!" Rehan sped his car faster. Today was one adventurous day!
