Episode 29
She looked adorable.
"Asad?" called out a voice behind him.
He turned to see a very agitated Zoya.
"Yes, Zoya?"
"My...passport," she held out her hand nervously.
"Wait, I need to check something," her eyes visibly widened.
"What? No," she instantly closed the space between them and lurched at the passport. He instantly held it above his head, transferring it from one hand to another; thoroughly enjoying the closeness. He felt the heat building up. He held the passport behind his back and didn't know if he regretted it as Zoya closed the any space between them, trying to grab it from him. Realising that a part of him would betray himself to her, he handed over the passport to her. Satisfied, she took it from him and turned to leave.
Just then, Nikhat came and snatched it from her and asked with eyebrows raised, "What are doing roaming with a passport?"
"Woh...actually"
There. That was the official proof that she had spent hell lot of a time with him.
Before she could answer, his ammi came and grabbed it from Nikhat. She left to her room with it, but not before casting a stern look at Zoya.
What was with this passport?
Why was everyone so interested in it?
All he wanted was to know her birthday.
But, that passport surely held something more important.
The police in him urged him to find out and that he would. Soon.
*****
"Chalo! Let's go the mall Zoya; we have some shopping to do!"
"Ammi?"
"Why do you think I asked you to get ready? Chalo, I will go call Asad."
"Ok, ammi. I will be there in a minute."
*****
"Mom, You know I hate shopping," said Asad switching off the television.
"Han Asad, but we ladies can't go alone, can we?"
"I suppose you are right."
"Asad, can I ask you something?"
"Sure, ammi."
"Woh...that day I saw you smile when Nikhat and I were talking about your wedding. Do you think you are ready for it?" she asked, praying that he would say yes'.
"Woh...actually...ammi...I guess, It would be a good way to start afresh, with the loss of two years and all. Who do you have in mind ammi?" he asked, knowing very well whom she had in mind.
"Do you have someone in mind?" she asked, taking him by surprise.
"...maybe..."
She smiled, "Can I assume it is the one I have in mind?" she asked looking pointedly at Zoya as she entered the hall.
Asad smiled and bit his lips and then turned his attention to his ammi, "maybe."
Both of them smiling as Zoya looked on confused.
*****
He hated shopping, but maybe window shopping wouldn't be that bad. He walked the length of the mall, only to stop when he thought he saw something interesting and that wasn't many shops.
When he was going to return, something caught his eyes and he shielded his eyes to the sunlight reflected from the shinny object. He went closer and noted it was a jewellery shop.
*****
Zoya frowned as she looked on from far.
Why was he talking to that lady?
She was holding a baby and Asad was pinching the cheeks of the baby.
She felt a surge of jealousy, when he shuffled the hair of the lady lovingly.
Both of them were laughing and she didn't like it one bit.
*****
"Done with the shopping?"
"Han Asad. Let's go," said his mother as she handed over the multitude of shopping bags to him.
He couldn't help but notice the dull look on Zoya's face.
"Ammi, I saw Mariam."
"Oh! How is she? It's been so long since we saw her. You should have called me."
Who was this Mariam? Zoya asked herself getting more irked.
"She has a baby now. I invited her over for dinner sometime."
"Oh good. That was thoughtful. By the way, I will be staying at Nikhat's for tonight."
*****
That day night
She knew she wasn't hungry but she could help but feel the craving for ice cream building up. She held the pillow closer to sleep, but knew that her baby wouldn't allow it until she had ice cream, specifically some kulfi.
Where was she to find some kulfi in the middle of the night?
Nevertheless, she got up and headed to the kitchen, hoping ice cream would help.
She stopped dead on tracks when she saw the light on her mother-in-law's room on.
Who would be there at this hour? She knew very well that she was not home.
Carefully, she headed towards the room, gathering all her courage from her field work in America.
*****
He looked like a deer caught in headlights.
"Asad, what are you doing here?"
Think fast, Asad. Think. You can't let her know you are searching her passport.
"Woh...han...I was looking for my reports."
"Why?" she asked not looking convinced.
"I wanted to get a second opinion."
"In the middle of the night?" she asked unbelievingly.
"Woh..."
"Never mind. You actually scared me."
"What are you doing here?"
"I...I wanted some ice cream."
"But there isn't any at home."
"What? Oh come on!" she exclaimed visibly annoyed.
"You know what, we could go out now."
"Now? At 11 pm? Are you insane?"
He put his hands up in surrender, "Just asked."
Zoya twisted her lips, she knew she wouldn't be able to sleep if she didn't have ice cream.
"Ok! I will get ready."
"Great. Meet you in the portico in 10 minutes."
*****
She didn't know where they would get ice cream at this hour, but Asad seemed to be confident as he drove towards his intended destination.
"Here we are."
"Where is this exactly?"
"The lake park."
"I used to come here for ice cream all the time when I was young."
They both got out and headed towards the lake through the canopy of trees.
The lake mirrored the sky above and lay silver in the bright light of the moon. The breeze that ran over the rippled surface blew her hair from her eyes and brought colour to her cheeks. The moist early spring air was fragranced with the pine trees that circled the lake. It was a view to cherish.
"Asad! This is so pretty. Thank you for bringing me here," she said hugging herself, enjoying the breeze on her face.
Asad smiled.
She looked heavenly and to think he was going to marry her, just made him feel happier than anything. He looked around and frowned seeing no ice cream.
"Asad, let's go boating," she said pointing at the queue for the boating. There were a considerable amount of people in the park.
"Ok!" he said, glad that she had forgotten about ice cream.
*****
"You turn the gear right, then the boat goes left and turn the gear left, then it goes right. Pull this lever for stopping. Any questions?"
Satisfied that his customers seemed to understand, the man pulled the string to start the boat.
"You have one hour. More time means more money."
Asad nodded as he took his place near the gear and Zoya sat on the deck opposite him.
*****
The boat glided through the low waves with all the smoothness.
Zoya enjoyed the water around her while Asad observed her.
It felt so right.
Whenever he saw the lake, he felt something deep down, like it was trying to swallow him and his memories. It was trying to pull something out of him. He shook his head as flashes of a similar lake came in front of him, the only difference was it was raining.
"Asad, are you alright?" she asked concerned.
He switched off the engine.
The visions cleared, but he winced in pain as a head ache threatened to form.
"Ya..." he nodded still shaking his head.
"I think I will drive now," she said, walking over and taking the gear from him. The boat jerked a little as all the weight was focused on one side.
Asad immediately walked to the other side.
"Why did you switch off the boat?"
"Just look around."
She saw that there was no other boat in sight and the shore looked far away in the horizon. The moon shone directly over her head and it was calm and peaceful, save for the quiet sound of the breeze. Her breath caught in her throat.
She just wanted to stay there.
"I love this place."
Asad smiled. All head ache gone.
"Do you come here often?"
"Yes, I feel very peaceful here."
Zoya smiled and looked at him. He looked so happy and content.
She took a step closer to him and he followed to balance the weight.
"Who was that in the mall today?"
He frowned, "Who?"
"Mariam"
Did he see jealousy?
Maybe he could play with her just a little bit.
"My ex-girl friend," he said, being careful not to laugh.
"Oh!" she said looking disappointed.
"Jealous?" She looked up to see the teasing glint in his eyes.
"Jealous, my foot!" she said trying to look away.
He couldn't help it and he laughed.
She looked at him with a threatening glare.
"She is my cousin, my sister."
"OH!"
He laughed harder.
She pouted.
"So you like kids a lot?"
"Ya! Everyone does."
"When you have kids, do want a son or a daughter?"
"Hm...maybe both."
"How many kids will you have?"
"Till I get one of each," he said smirking at the reaction he got.
"WHAT?"
He laughed, "Do you have any idea how adorable you look right now? Oh God, I love you."
That his when the laughter left his face.
Her eyes widened.
He stammered, "I...mean...I didn't mean...I like you...not in...I mean...yes, I do...maybe not...I mean, yes but no...no...I mean...yes..."
Oh God!
He was making no sense whatsoever.
Zoya understood though. It was an, "I love you" one tells your parents, your friends, your kids, but it was an, "I love you", nevertheless.
She closed the distance between them and let her lips feel his. It wasn't meant to be anything more than a peck, but Asad, brought his hands around her waist and pulled her closer, her hands involuntarily found its way around his neck and she felt him deepen the kiss. She responded with an equal fervor, tasting him, not wanting the moment to end. They parted after a while for breath, their foreheads still touching.
"We were in love," he stated against her mouth, with no sign of surprise.
It wasn't a question.
It was a statement.
She simply nodded confirming the same.
His head dipped again to feel her lips. She brought her hands to cup his face, pulling closer. He kissed her ferociously, their lips sliding together with bruising fervor.
*****
She brought her finger tips to her swollen lips again, wanting to reconfirm that that had happened for real and she wasn't just dreaming.
Asad paid the owner of the boat and turned to look at her.
She blushed and looked away.
Asad couldn't help but smile.
He put his hands around her waist and led her towards the car.
Just then, they heard the twinkling of the ice cream van.
Smiling they changed their direction to the van.
"What do you want?"
"Kulfi," she said excited.
He brought two kulfis and both of them headed towards the car.
*****
She rested her back against the car as Asad mirrored her actions against the car nearby, both of them standing opposite to each other, savoring the delicacy.
"So, how did it happen? Who proposed first?"
Zoya smiled, she had dreaded these questions.
"Trust me, Asad. You know it better than me and it is kind of complicated. I don't want to confuse you."
Asad frowned.
What was so complicated?
"Just know that we were in love. It will come back to you. Trust me," she said taking another bite of her kulfi.
He shrugged letting it go, "Do you know that you eat like a child?"
"What?"
He pointed at her lips and chin, dripping with cream.
She sheepishly brought her hand to wipe it off, when Asad stopped her.
She looked up at him to see a peek of passion in his eyes.
He threw the stick of his own ice cream and with a tug, pulled her closer.
"We don't want it to go a waste, now. Do we?" he said huskily.
She bit her lips, knowing very well what he was implying.
She tried to answer him, but his mouth was on hers. It started soft and passionate, then it turned deep and wanting. It set her aflame. His tongue was slowly exploring her, teasing her. She felt raw desire building up. Her ice cream involuntarily fell to the ground and she wrapped her arms around his neck, her thumb stroking the back of his neck. She was pleased when he moaned against her mouth and pulled her closer to him. He pulled away and before she could protest, she felt his lips on her chin, licking and nibbling her. He found his way back up, his teeth catching her lip. The taste of ice cream dissolving into a subtle taste of copper. He realized its implication and pulled away. Sure enough, there were traces of red on her lips and he knew it wasn't her lipstick.
"I'm..."
"Sh," she brought her finger to his lips to quieten to him and pulled him in to a hug satisfied with how the evening had turned out to be.
