Episode 28
He had smiled. He had smiled. He had smiled.
Sweet Potatoes! He had smiled!
This was it!
She promised herself that she would get Asad and Zoya married within the end of this week.
Now it was time to go and see Zoya.
*****
Zoya sat in her bed, biting her nails.
She was so deep in thought that she didn't hear her mother-in-law enter her room and almost jerked when she felt her hand on her shoulder.
"Ammi?"
"How is my grandchild?" she asked bluntly.
"Ammi?" she asked wide eyed.
"How is my grandchild?" she asked again.
Dilshad had to keep her balance when Zoya leapt and put her hands around her in a full hug, seeking the comfort she needed.
"I'm sorry", she said quietly eyes watering up.
"Why didn't you tell me? Never mind. How far along are you?" she asked, placing her hand on her stomach.
"12 weeks," she replied placing a hand over her hand.
"12 weeks! And I didn't find out. I'm a terrible mother."
"No ammi. Don't blame yourself. It was my mistake. I should have told you."
"When...when did you know?"
"On Asad's birthday," she said not meeting her mother-in-law's gaze.
"Ya Allah! That long! Did...did he know?"
Zoya nodded silently letting her tears drop.
Dilshad wiped her tears away and said, "This is it! I will take care of it. This is the last minute you cry. No more tears from you. I forbid it."
Zoya looked at her and smiled weakly, sniffling and nodding.
Dilshad was about to leave but stopped when she saw Zoya's passport on the bed.
Her eyebrows creased into a frown, "Why is this with you?" she asked taking it.
"It came 10 days back."
"Don't tell me that you actually considered leaving."
"Woh...actually...ammi."
"You considered leaving??" she asked unbelieving.
"Ammi, Asad cannot handle shock. Even if we are able to convince him to marry me, what about this baby? How are we going to explain it to him? What if he doesn't believe it is his? What if he questions my dignity? I will not be able to live with it..."
"Stop this nonsense..." said Dilshad, feeling her BP rising.
"...It's better if I just leave. I can come back after Asad is cured," she continued her rambling.
"What if he isn't cured at all?" she asked menacingly.
Zoya stopped short and stared at her. She had no answer. She hadn't thought about it.
"I...I..."
Dilshad placed her finger on Zoya's lips to quieten her.
"No more crying. I forbid it. And I will take care of everything. Believe me. You are not going anywhere. Well, maybe for a honeymoon soon but definitely not to America. I'm taking this passport with me."
She turned to leave before Zoya could stop her.
With her hands on the door knob, she turned to look at her, "Wear something pretty. Asad should be completely smitten. Make him fall in love with you all over again."
And she left before Zoya could say she didn't know how he fell in love with her in the first place.
*****
"Ya Allah! Who left you here alone?" gasped Dilshad when she saw Nikhat's baby, Rehaan on the sitting room sprawled on the floor on a baby bed sheet with pillows as barriers with no one around.
In a hurry, she placed the passport on the coffee table and ran to pick up the unattended baby.
Nikhat came.
"Where were you?"
"In the washroom."
"You should have called me. Here, he is crying."
Handing over Rehaan to her, Dilshad left totally forgetting about the passport that lay in the coffee table.
*****
She didn't have any plan.
She would have to go with the flow.
She entered the room, to find Asad getting his clothes inside the bathroom, ready for his bath.
Just then, he received a phone call and he left the room.
On a sudden impulse, she entered the bathroom and stole his towel from the railing.
*****
He swore he had taken his towel.
Where was it?
Was he losing his memory?
Luckily for him, he still had his pants on.
He went out of the room and searched the room and found it wasn't there either.
Frowning he left his room.
"Ammi. Where is my towel?"
Ammi considered it for a moment rubbing her chin as if in thought, "In Zoya's balcony. That's where we dry clothes."
Asad left to Zoya's room totally missing the smirk on his mother's face.
*****
A cream white crepe saree with small blue flowers for a border, with simple but exotic designery was in her collection. She had no idea where it had come from. If she had to give credit to her experience in the Intelligence Bureau, it had to be from Asad. It looked new. So, most probably he had got it in the period of his lost years. It would do no harm or that's what she thought.
*****
He hadn't spoken with her much, except during the time when they were with Rehaan. This was probably the first time he was going to meet her one on one.
As soon as he entered her room, he regretted not knocking.
Zoya might have been facing away from him, but the mirror in front of her gave him a generous view of her that totally dictated invasion of privacy.
She had heard him enter when she had tucked in the pleats. As quickly as possible she brought the saree pallu to cover herself clumsily and turned to face him.
"S...sorry," he said swallowing.
Her gaze traveled the length of his shirtless body. Blushing she looked down and simply nodded, straightening her saree.
"I...I came to get my towel."
She pointedly looked at the balcony.
He went there to retrieve it but came back in empty-handed to dash into Zoya who had been standing just there. His arms protectively wrapped around her as she placed her cold hands on his bare torso. His eyes scanned each intricate detail of her face. They didn't know how long they stayed like that.
Just then, they heard Nikhat call out for Zoya.
Both their eyes widen.
They looked at their state.
Asad was shirtless and Zoya's saree wasn't exactly proper, especially with the dori of her blouse hanging loose.
This was definitely not a state they wanted to be caught in.
They pulled away and Zoya hurried and locked the door and shouted out to her, "Han bhabhi! Give me 10 minutes!"
Nikhat just shrugged and left, still not understanding why Dilshad had told her to call Zoya.
Zoya turned to look at a baffled Asad, "I...uhm...sorry."
"I understand," he nodded understandingly, "Now, I can't get out the room like this."
Zoya thought for a moment and went towards her cupboard. Picking up his shirt from the first day, she handed it to him.
Seeing him hesitate, she said, "It's yours."
He took the shirt from her, though it seemed that she didn't want to part with it.
He put it on.
It was a crisp, ash Van Heusen shirt. All his Van Heusen collection was his ammi's presents. He didn't know this. It was probably from his lost years.
Why did Zoya have it in her possession?
He hid his frown and finished buttoning his shirt.
He looked at her. She was trying to tie up the dori of her blouse. He instantly recognized her saree.
Wasn't this the one, his mother had given him on his 21st birthday for his wife?
Why did Zoya have it?
He felt slight recurrence of his head ache and stopped thinking.
He heard himself asking, "May I?" before he could stop himself.
She looked at him confused.
He cleared his throat and asked again, "May I?"
She understood and turned with her back facing him. Slowly, she took her hair and put it in the front.
He should have just left. Why on earth did he have to offer his help? She didn't ask. He chided himself, when he saw his hands were trembling.
Swallowing his nervousness, he brought himself to tie the dori not understanding if his fingers were deliberating touching her.
*****
She wasn't exactly a fan of engineers. But today, she loved them. Nikhat husband had agreed to her little plan and those 10 minutes were enough to make the necessary adjustments in the bathroom door.
*****
He ran his fingers through his hair as he looked at himself in the mirror.
What was happening to him?
Why was he attracted to Zoya?
He had been thinking of her ever since she had said "I love you" and kissed him in the hospital.
Was it just an attraction?
Not wanting to think about it, he shrugged away his thoughts and headed to take a rather cold shower.
******
She had told him that she would bring his towel to him. Now, where the hell was it?
"What are you looking for, Zoya?"
"Asad's towel."
"Here it is," she said and handed it over to her as innocently as possible.
"Thanks, ammi."
*****
She heard him showering and knocked at the door.
"Come in!"
That meant he was decent enough and Zoya entered the door and went and placed the towel in the railing.
She turned to leave and froze as she found herself unable to open the door knob. She tried yet again frantically, trying not to think that a very naked Asad was just 4 feet away from her, only separated by a shower curtain.
By now, he had finished showering and peeked through the showering curtain.
Why was she still there?
His eyes widen when he realized the reason.
He looked at the railing which was close by and took his clothes and towel and dressed up quickly.
He stepped out of the shower and placed a hand on her shoulder.
She jumped in fright.
"Sorry. It's no use."
"What do we do now?"
"Wait for someone to miss us."
"But I told ammi I was going to sleep and they know you take rest."
He frowned.
She had a point.
He tried the door knob himself and got the same results.
*****
When nothing had helped, Zoya had finally agreed to Asad and slumped on the floor next to him. Thankfully the floor was sparkling clean. Feeling tired, she rested her head on the wall and closed her eyes.
*****
He saw her rest. After a couple of minutes, her head rolled to his side and rested on his shoulders. He slowly and slightly caressed her hair.
*****
She wasn't exactly sleepy. Feeling uncomfortable, she had waited a couple of minutes before resting her head on his shoulders. She smiled to herself when he caressed her hair.
There was hope after all.
*****
Feeling tired himself, he also rested his head on hers and closed his eyes.
This was exactly how Dilshad found them 2 hours later.
"Mission Accomplished," she said to herself before going to wake them and leaving before they could give any funny explanation.
*****
He decided to watch some television before dinner and went to the sitting room.
He frowned when he saw a passport on the coffee table.
Who was careless enough to leave it here like this?
Flipping open the cover, he found himself staring at a very recent taken photo of Zoya...
