Episode 30
How had she possibly thought that everyone would believe that the bruise on her lips was because she had tried to open a bottle can of soda?
Especially with Asad casting her constant longing glances that everyone seemed to notice?
The house had been filled with relatives and friends over the past couple of days.
She had been surprised when her mother-in-law had told that Asad had agreed for their marriage, nevertheless on that week. She had come to know that Dilshad told him that they had already been engaged to be married before the accident and the invitations had been sent once before, so the guests wouldn't be shocked at the short notice given.
She looked at the mirror and smiled as she adorned her bangles. Life had taken a toll on her, now she couldn't even remember how life was in America.
She had lost her job there, but Ayaan had promised to get her job in CBI if she wanted but she had rejected it. She had realized she wanted to give her child the full care and affection that she had lost in her childhood.
She still wasn't comfortable with not telling Asad about their baby, but her mother-in-law had made her promise not to tell him, at least not until the wedding ceremony.
She wasn't showing yet and she was grateful for that.
But, she knew she couldn't hide it from him for long.
*****
He buttoned the cuffs of his sherwani when the mobile rang.
"Ayaan? Where are you?"
"You know how it is in our profession. I can't come for the ceremony. Please understand."
He let out a deep breath and said, "I will miss you."
"I know. I'm sorry."
Ayaan was his best friend. He had convinced him not to tell the department of his memory loss and just to take the extended medical leave. That had made it difficult to track the password of his phone. He was still using a spare phone and not his official phone. The mobile operator had told him that the contents would be deleted if he didn't know the password and he didn't want that. He wanted to know whatever secrets his phone held, especially something that might throw light about his relationship with Zoya.
What could be there? Maybe some photos of their time together? Nothing else, right?
"Asad, I'm caught up in a reserved area. Can you please recharge my phone online? I'm not able to do it here."
"Sure, I will do it."
"Thanks, I will give you a missed call when it gets done. Bye."
"Bye."

He switched on the laptop.
One thing he was happy about was the fact that his laptop wasn't password protected.
He switched on his google chrome and started with his work.
After fifteen minutes,
"I need to get a new laptop, the charge isn't holding up," he murmured to himself as he looked around his room for the charger.
With it being in the further corner, he got up to go get it.
Just then, his relatives came inside the room, fussing over him with sweets.
By the time, he sent them away and came back to his laptop, the charge was gone.
Cursing he plugged in the charger and switched on the laptop.
He went straight to google chrome and pressed Ctrl + H.
*****
"Najma, I still don't feel comfortable with the whole thing. I think I should tell him now."
"No Zoya. Ammi is right. Wait till the ceremony is over. You know now that he loves you. I'm not surprised. He was in so much love with you even before the whole accident. He fell in love with you all over again and he is not going to be angry for such wonderful news."
She bit her lip, her eyebrows creased together in worry. She couldn't help but feel that it was so wrong not telling him.

He stood in the shadows with flowers covering his head. He wouldn't afford to miss his son's wedding yet again. Could he? Hence, Rashid Ahmed Khan stood in the corner to witness the wedding of his only son.
*****
"Kya aapko Asad Ahmed Khan se yeh nikkah qubool hai?"
The question ringed in her ears.
She had wanted this.
Of course! She had wanted this, then why was her voice failing her?
The Qazi asked again, "Kya aapko Asad Ahmed Khan se yeh nikkah qubool hai?"
She could sense the unrest in the hall and said, "Han," from behind her veil.
Dilshad nudged her and whispered, "Zoya, you have to say Qubool hai."
"Qubool hai" she repeated.
"She has been brought up in America, she doesn't know these things," explained Dilshad to the dissatisfied crowd.
The Qazi turned his attention to Asad, "Kya aapko Zoya Farooqi se yeh nikkah qubool hai?"
She held her breath as she awaited his answer.
"Qubool hai" his tone very well composed.
She literally wanted to hit herself for fumbling during her turn.
All be gone, she was Zoya Ahmed Khan, yet again.
*****
"The food was delicious, Dilshad," said yet another guest before leaving.
Dilshad was exhausted with all the preparation and was thankful that Rashid took care of most of the things from the back drop.
She looked at her watch. It was 4 pm already. It was time to send Asad and Zoya to their honeymoon.
*****
"Nainithal?" he asked.
"Yes," she said handing over both, Asad's and Zoya's passport and tickets, "It is a two hours journey by flight to Pantnagar Airport and a one hour journey by car to the resort. Everything has been paid. This is my wedding gift to you," said Dilshad, smiling at her surprised son.
*****
She was confused.
Today was her wedding and they were already going out?
She hadn't missed the twinkle in her mother-in-law's eyes and now she couldn't help but wonder what she had planned.
All that said, she didn't like one bit the silence in the car. Then, again a driver was there.
Why hadn't Asad spoke to her since the wedding?
All her thoughts came to a redundant stop as she gasped when the car halted by the airport.
She turned to see Asad take out their passports from his shirt pocket.
He turned to meet her glance and smiled, "Mom's surprise. Come on!"
He gestured her to follow him as he got out.
He was smiling.
That meant he hadn't seen the passport, right?
Now, all she had to do was make sure he didn't open them.
(To be continued)
