Episode 27
It had been 20 days.
Zoya sat on the balcony sipping her coffee as she looked out to the night sky, reflecting on her life.
Her brother and Zoya had grown up as orphans. Now, he was married to her best friend and they were living happily in Dubai. She, herself, had found a family here. Asad's mom and dad looked after her like she was their own daughter. She found herself smiling whenever they were together and around her. Rashid had been awful in the initial two days feeling totally guilty. But, Zoya had convinced him to be positive and it made a difference. Then, there was this baby. It completed her. She dabbed her hands on her eyes stopping the tears that were threatening to fall. However perfect this all seemed, nothing was the same without Asad, her Asad.
"I miss you," she whispered to no one.
*****
He heard her.
Of course, he heard her.
Why would he not? These 20 days he had been tagging with her like a puppy, not that she knew.
She looked terribly weak.
All he wanted to do was to hold her and tell her that he was there for her.
But, here he was stuck.
He hated being translucent.
Initially he had thought he was hallucinating, dreaming or something. But, with days passing, he had come to accept the fact that he was experiencing some sort of "out of the body" experience.
He hated being like this.
He hated being in a coma.
*****
She woke up early. Today she was going to be with Asad the whole day.The three of them took turns to stay with him in the hospital. Today, it was her turn. She barely ate her breakfast. She rushed out, only to stop in front of the calendar in the hall. Letting out a deep breath, she flipped the page to the next month. She had been hoping that Asad would wake up one of these days and say, "April Fool."
*****
He hated being invisible. The only thing he enjoyed was being with Zoya 24 x 7. Drifting through the walls was an added advantage. He had been surprised to see his abbu, but nevertheless was happy. Today, everyone was in the hospital celebrating his mother's birthday with just a cup cake. He knew it meant it was 28th May. He looked down to see himself lying motionless. Will he remember being a "floating ghost being"? Probably not, he hadn't read of anything of such sort from other coma patients. He almost jerked when he felt something in his hand. He looked up to see Zoya caressing his hand. For the first time in 2 months, Asad had the luxury of being able to sense the feeling of touch.
*****
"The tests are promising. We noticed a twitch in his hand on stimuli. We have a specialist from America coming this evening. He will take care," said the doctor giving the Khans the hope they needed.
*****
Since his mother's birthday, he looked forward to the nights with Zoya. She had the habit of snuggling into his bed and lying next to him since the accident day. He hadn't felt it before. But now, he did. And he loved it, especially when she kissed him on waking up.
Involuntarily, his memory drifted off to the birth of his sister to playing anf fighting with her to her death to the disappearance of his dad to his college days to his police training days to the assignments he had to...
He felt himself being whisked away as pain settled in.
What was happening?
He shut his eyes to a blinding white light.
"Asad?"
His eyes fluttered open. There was no light this time. He was in a room, staring at the ceiling.
Where was he?
He saw a man with salt and pepper hair hover over him.
"Asad! Can you hear me?"
He tried to shift to a more comfortable, painless position only to feel the pain intensify. He winced in pain and gasped.
"Nurse, the injection. His blood pressure is rising."
He felt the needle on his skin.
He creased into a frown trying to remember.
Ah! Yes! The assignment. The assignment in Shimla.
That made sense.
He had been shot.
That explained the pain and the hospital.
"Asad?"
"Ammi?" Since when was her voice so smooth?
He looked up to see a rather pretty lady hover over him.
"No! It's me Zoya! Oh God! I missed you," she said crying.
Her tears wetting his face. He froze when she whispered, "I love you," before leaning in to place a chaste kiss on the corner of his mouth.
*****
Why wasn't he saying anything? She didn't care. He was back and that is all that mattered now. She held on to his hand firmly afraid that he might go into a coma if she did not.
"Asad! Can you hear me?" asked the doctor again.
He simply nodded.
"How are you feeling?"
"...numb?" he replied hoarsely.
"What do you remember last?"
"...Shimla...I was shot," he said feebly. His voice was better.
He heard the girl gasp as she left his hand as if it burned her. The doctor also noticed it.
"Ok! Get some sleep and welcome back!"
He ushered Zoya out of the room.
The case was not as simple as he had thought.
*****
"Hm. A case of partial memory loss. He has lost 2 years worth of memories," said the doctor thoughtfully.
"This can't be happening," mumbled Zoya as she hugged herself to confort the fear of breaking down.
"Don't give him any shocking news. It may hamper his memory permanently. Bring him for monthly therapies. He will be well soon. We will do our best. You can take him home tomorrow."
*****
"Ammi, who is she?"
He couldn't hold it anymore, he needed to know. He had caught her sneaking glances at him, when she thought he wasn't seeing her way. For some reason, he didn't feel offended. He felt warmth spreading through him and he hated not knowing the reason why.
Dilshad tried best not to show her weariness, "Your friend, Asad," she said weakly as she continued squeezing the mosambi for juice.
He frowned. He brought his hands to the corner of his mouth, where she had kissed him.
Well, not every friend kissed and said, "I love you", did they?
What was ammi hiding?
*****
2 years of amnesia?
2 months of coma?
What the hell?
What had happened before that?
He stopped thinking when he felt a headache finding its way into him.
*****
In 10 days, she would be three months pregnant and not a soul in the house knew. Not even Asad, this time. She tightened her hold on her passport. Her passport and visa had arrived earlier that day, just before Asad had arrived from the hospital. The Intelligence Bureau had called and asked her to decide in 10 days; either return or lose her job.
What was she to do?
*****
Dilshad paced her room. Rashid had shifted to Nikhat's house. They couldn't afford to reveal his return to Asad. She hated this. She had finally got her whole family in front of her eyes, yet wasn't able to enjoy the homeliness that came with it.
Zoya. Poor thing. She was going through what she went through 10 years back, when Rashid had left. Only for her it was worse. Her husband was right in front of her eyes and he didn't know.
She had to think fast and wise.
Zoya deserved better.
Since he was 21, she had been talking about his marriage, so this wouldn't be much of a shock to him.
With utmost determination, she entered the hall.
She froze at the scene in front of her. Asad had Nikhat's baby in his lap as Zoya feed the baby some formula. His tiny fingers were clasped tightly over one of Asad's fingers and he was weakly kicking air. Both of them cooed at him. They looked like a perfect family. If only she had a camera. The little angel seemed to be liking the attention his uncle and aunt was giving him. As soon as she finished feeding him, she got up and left leaving Asad to burp him.
"Asad, get married. You can have one of your own," said Nikhat, taking her baby from him.
Dilshad turned her gaze to Zoya. Her eyes widened instantly as she saw her brushing off a lone tear and caressing her stomach. It spoke volumes. She was a mother and was totally positive that her daughter-in-law was pregnant.
Why hadn't she told her?
She turned her attention back to Asad. There were other things to attend first. Not wanting to let slip of this perfect opportunity, she said cautiously, "If Asad is ready, I know the perfect girl for him."
*****
He felt all their eyes on him.
Zoya, Nikhat and his ammi.
Gosh! Women!
For starters, he was surprised. He knew his mother. And if he was any good at judging character, she might have not let him stay unmarried this long. He snorted. He wouldn't have been shocked or surprised if she had told him, he was already married. Especially to Zoya.
Involuntarily, his gaze went to her. She was looking at him with utmost anticipation. He could sense the longingness in her eyes.
Yes, he wanted to get married.
He didn't take the gaze from her, there was something those eyes were trying to convey to him, he felt a tug within, as if a memory was trying to resurface.
Yes, he wanted to get married. To her?
He frowned. Where did that thought come from?
What was he supposed to say?
He turned to look at his mom. She had her x-ray eyes' look on.
He groaned. She had probably seen him staring.
What was he supposed to say?
He got up and left.
Not before Dilshad noticed his two dimples forming prominently.
(To be continued)
