Part 25

Episode 26

24 hours.

That's what the doctor had told her.

She didn't remember very much after that.

She vaguely remembered falling into the arms of a gentleman who had helped in bringing Asad to the emergency room.

She hoped the nurse got her mother-in-law.

With that thought last in her mind, she let fatigue take over her.

*****

She had seen a lady enter the room with this particular patient.

She might be a trainee nurse, but she knew these two needed help.

With two long strides, she reached Zoya's room.

*****

Asad.

The girl had called out for Asad.

The girl had cried out for Asad.

Why did fate want him to drive into someone with the name Asad?

He looked at the girl who was unconscious, with an IV stuck in her hand.

He came out the room, to slump into the chair near the emergency room.

"ASAD!"

That was the call of a mother.

He didn't have to look up to know that it was none other than his Dilshad.

*****

"ASAD!"

The nurse must have been wrong.

It couldn't be her Asad.

Why would it be her Asad?

Allah! It shouldn't be Asad.

"ASAD!"

She must have been seeing things.

She brushed away her tears to see properly.

It might have been 10 years since she saw him.

But, nothing had changed.

He was the same.

She felt suffocating.

She felt dizzy but stayed put.

But, when she heard him whisper "Dilshad", she broke down.

*****

He was beside her to hold her before she fell down.

She kept opening and closing her eyes, struggling to breathe.

"Dilshad."

She cried.

She cried terribly.

She held on to him and cried.

"Rashid, Asad..."

He held her.

He hugged her.

"I know," he said in a feeble voice.

For the first time since he had seen her, she stopped crying, her eyes asking one question, "How?"

"I was...I...I was the one who was driving."

Her eyes grew wide.

He expected her to shout at him, yell at him or slap him.

But, she cried and held on to him.

"Please, don't leave," she said in a weak voice.

He looked down to her confused.

"Dilshad?"

"Please, don't leave this time. I need you," she repeated.

"I'm sorry, Dilshad."

"Where were you all this time? I missed you."

"In jail."

He needed not to say more. She understood. When Asad's sister had died, he had lost his job. That explained it.

"I didn't want me to be a problem to you," he said as he kissed her forehead.

"We missed you."

"I will never leave you or Asad again. Ever."

She gave a small smile as she snuggled closer to him.

Just then, the doctor came out.

They jerked apart.

"Doctor?" started Rashid.

"It is the same as I told you before. We need 24 hours to tell you anything," said the doctor before leaving.

Rashid held on to her, to confirm that he would be there for her.

She laid her head on his shoulders when she suddenly remembered Zoya.

"Zoya? Where is Zoya?"

He frowned. Who was Zoya?

Then, he remembered the girl.

"I think in the next room," he said leading her to the room where Zoya was staying temporarily.

"Zoya?"

"Who is she?"

She smiled before turning to look at him, "Your daughter-in-law."

He was stunned.

He didn't know if he wanted to laugh or cry.

His son was married.

*****

He was dead.

Well, that was the first thought in his mind.

If not why then wasn't he able to move his hands or legs?

How long had he been sleeping?

He didn't know.

He remembered the monsoon.

He remembered being hit.

He remembered falling down.

He remembered Zoya.

He remembered Zoya saying, "I love you!"

Oh God! He wanted to be with her.

But, he couldn't seem to be able to move a muscle.

He willed himself to wake up.

Not being able to do the same, he rested.

He waited.

*****

She had slept for 50 hours? 60 hours?

She didn't know.

"Asad?" was the first word out of her mouth.

"Zoya, wake up dear."

She heard her mother-in-law.

"Ammi?" she started to cry.

"Ammi, where is Asad?" she got up frantically pulling the IV needle out of her hand.

"Zoya, don't cry. He hasn't woken up. But, his vitals are getting stable."

"I have to see him, ammi."

She ran out of the room, not concerned with anyone around.

She entered the room.

He was in the bed, with monitors on both side of the bed. He had clips on his fingers connected to one of the monitors. An oxygen mask on his mouth.

*****

He sensed her.

He could totally sense her.

She was in the room.

*****

She couldn't see him.

She couldn't see him like that.

She stumbled on the door.

She felt the nauseau building up.

She had to get out of there.

*****

She wasn't coming near him.

She was withdrawing.

He could sense it.

He willed himself to wake up.

He had to stop her.

With a gasp, his eyes snapped open.

"Zoya?" was the first word out of his mouth.

(To be continued)
