Chapter 15
Sanam woke up stretching her arms out. Her left arm felt so sore. It seemed like she had slept on it all night. She rubbed her eyes as sunlight hit them and frowned. She remembered drawing her curtains last night. So where was the sun coming from? As she opened her eyes she realized that she wasn't in her room! She was in...
"Ya Allah!" she gasped and jumped out of the bed.
"Main...main yahan kaise ayee?" she spoke to herself backing away from the bed.
She saw her earrings on the bedside table and looked at her reflection in the mirror.
"Aur ye earrings? Ye kub utareen maine? Mujhe kuch yaad kyun nahin araha?" she rubbed the side of her head and stepped back again, in shock, only to collide with someone.
Aahil caught her. He was already showered and dressed. His wet hair glistening, courtesy of the sunlight.
"Aahil? Main yahan kaise ayee?" she asked as he let her go.
"Main laya tha," he said quietly.
"Aap?" she exclaimed. "Aur ye earrings aap ne utareen? Apki himmat kaise hui mujhe choone ki?" she screamed.
Aahil clamped a hand over her mouth and within seconds he had her pinned against the wall.
"Chillao mat!" he hissed. "Bahar wakil sahab ayeve hain."
"Mmm," Sanam squirmed under his hold. But Aahil kept her in one place.
"Haan main laya tha yahan par. Kyun ke Ammi ne bataya ke wakil sahab chakkar lagain ge. Unhe waise bi humare nikkah pe shak hai. Rahi tumari earrings ki baat. To woh bi maine utareen kyun ke woh pillow main ulajgayeen thi. Mujhe tumme choone ka koi showk nahin hain." He let her go as she finally stopped moving.
"Ab chup chap tayyar hoke ajao. Wakil sahab humse milne aye hain. Humme ye miya biwi ka drama unke samne karna hoga. Now hurry up!" he snapped.
"Main nahin aa sakti," she whispered quietly.
"What?!" he turned around in anger ready to give her a piece of his mind.
"Woh mere kaprre abhi bi purane kamre main hain," Sanam quickly responded sensing his anger.
"Ammi ne tumhare kappre bhijvae hain," he said pointing to a shopping bag by the bed.
Apparently he had carried it into the room, but Sanam was too busy screaming to notice. As she bent down to pick up the bag, she heard him close the door behind him and she hurried over to lock it.
As Sanam moved in front of the mirror to take off her jewelry she noticed her left hand. It was all bandaged up! Sanam touched her arm remembering how her bangles had broken and how pieces of them had pierced her skin, cutting her. Sanam held her hand and stared at her reflection in the mirror. "Aahil kitne ajeeb hain. Pehle zakham dehte hain, phir marham lagate hain," she thought to herself.

"Aahil Miya, Sanam nahin dekaiye dehraheen hain," Wakil Sahab turned towards Aahil.
"Haan abhi athee hogi... lo agayi," he said catching a glimpse of her. She was wearing a red anarkali, looking stunning with a heavy royal necklace and matching earrings. She had ditched her braid today, her hair flowing behind her. Aahil was left breathless. He was in a full-blown staring session, when she walked up to him and gave him a look that said: "stop staring."
"Kitni der lagadi Jaan?" Aahil slipped his hand in hers and gave it a tight squeeze.
Sanam's eyes almost bulged out of their sockets. What on earth had happened to him overnight? He was holding her hand?! And Jaan??????
"Ji?!" an utterly surprised Sanam answered.
Aahil glared at her then signaled towards the lawyer through his eyes. It took a few minutes for Sanam to realize what he meant but then she caught on.
He pulled the chair for her and started to pour some porridge out for her.
"Toh boliye wakil sahab aap itni subah yahan pe kaise? Please join us," Aahil indicated for wakil sahab to sit down.
"Nahin. Nahin. Shukriya. Main naashtha karke ayaa hoon. Mujhe bas Sanam ko ye kaghazaat deyne thay." He held up an envelope. Begum Sahiiba agar ijazat ho tho kya main Sanam ko ek dafa iski requirements sumjha sakta hoon?"
"Haan, bilkul. Aahil beta shuroo karo." She picked up a spoon and began eating. Everyone followed suit, but Aahil. His eyes were impatiently searching for Sanam who had disappeared into the living room lounge.
He hastily finished his breakfast and without asking to be excused, left the table. He spotted Sanam and Wakil Sahab; they were still discussing the papers.
"Arre Jaan, tumhara kaam hee nahin hua! Mujhe mera wallet nahin mil raha! Zara doond do please?" he faked a smile.
"Aahil Miya bus do theen safay aur bakhi hain.."
"Main samjha doonga," he took the papers from the lawyer's hand.
"Jaisa aap theek samjhein," Wakil sahab made to leave while Aahil steered Sanam towards their room. But noticing them heading to their room, he stopped to observe them. Aahil turned back slightly and saw this.
He caught Sanam's hand and pulled her towards him.
"Aahil kya kar rahe hain aap?!" squealed Sanam.
"Wallet to ek bahana tha Jaan, mujhe to kuch aur hee chaiyye tha," Aahil smirked and picked her up in his arms.
"Kya kar rahe hain? Choriye mujhe!" Sanam wailed. But Aahil carried her the rest of the distance to their room and locked the door behind them with his remote.
Wakil sahab, having witnessed this little romantic session, smiled and left the house.
"Ugh!" Sanam winced as Aahil flung her on the bed.
"Ek minute ke liye bi nahin soch na ke mujhe tumse kuch chaiyye hoga. Woh to wakil sahab karre thay to isliye mujhe ye karna parda. Toh humare baare main koi kwaab dekna shuroo mat karna," and with that he picked up his coat and left the room.
A startled Sanam sat there with a fresh batch of tears ready to pour. ..
***************************************************************************
The rest of the day was a bore for Sanam as Begum Sahiba didn't allow her to do any work. But she did have her meet a million women. All of them cooing and aahing on seeing her and giving her blessings. The job of a Choti Begum was much less interesting than her daily routines. Before, she was atleast spending her time doing useful things like cooking and cleaning. Now, she felt like she had too much free time.
The day passed by and soon it was time for dinner. Sanam was anticipating Aahil arrival but he didn't show up. Neither did the lawyer. Sanam tried Aahil's phone many times on Begum Sahiba's insistence but Aahil didn't pick up.
Everyone had their dinner and retired to their rooms. Sanam waited for Aahil but he still wasn't home. She saw Lateef walking past the dining area, so she quickly ran over to Aahil's room. She knew that Lateef was keen on keeping Begum Sahiba updated on Sanam's sleeping schedule and location and she didn't want him...her...er...to inform her that she was still loitering.
She turned around to close the door when she bumped into Aahil and stumbled backwards, losing her balance.
"Samhalkar nahin chal sakteen?" Aahil snarled.
"Maaf kariye ga," Sanam starightened herself.
"Aapko itni der lagayi aane main? Kya kaam bohut tha aaj? Main khaana laoon?" she asked tentatively, trying to make small talk.
"Toh ab tum mujse poocho gi ke der khahan lagi? Kyun lagi? Meri biwi bane ki zyada koshish mat karo," he snapped.
The fact was that he'd had a tiff with Rehan and the subject was Sanam + Nikkah. After that, Aahil didn't feel like coming home. The realization of Sanam and Rehan's love blinded him again and he was enraged with Sanam. How dare she agree to this nikkah to play with his emotions? After all what was this game she was setting up? One on hand there were these feelings and on the other there were feelings for Sanam. The love for Sanam. That love that swelled his heart and got him all hot and bothered. With this mixed cauldron of feelings, Aahil had decided to stay back in his office, to gather his thoughts and stay away from the woman who had him confused in knots. But alas here she was again.
"Biwi to hoon main aapki. Aap maane ya na maane," retorted Sanam. "Toh khaana laoon?" she repeated the question.
"Nahin, main khaahke aaya hoon!" he slammed the door to the bathroom and turned on the shower.
Sanam jumped at the noise and then fixed the bed and took out his night clothes. As she placed them on the bed, she saw the empty water jug and decided to fill it. By the time she came back, Aahil was already dressed for bed, typing away on his computer.
Sanam hurriedly put the jug on his nightstand and turned to leave the room with a quiet, "Goodnight."
"Tum kahan jaa rahi ho?" Aahil asked.
"Sone jaa rahi hoon apne kamre main."
"Tum wahan nahin so gi, yaheen so gi. Maine subah tumme kaha tha na ke humme miya biwi ka drama karna pardega?"
Sanam walked on and suddenly with a soft thud the door closed. Aahil had locked the door and walked up behind Sanam. As she turned to protest, she almost bumped into him. Their noses were almost touching, that's how close he stood to her. He put his hands on the wall on either side of her, trapping her. Sanam took in a sharp intake of breath as she realized his proximity.
"Maine kahan na ke tum yaheen so gi? What don't you understand?" he hissed.
"Woh main...main apna ...blan..ket.. blanket lene jaarahi thee," she whispered breathlessly.
Aahil blinked. "What?!"
"Main apna blanket lene jaarahi thee, phir yaheen arahi thee."
Aahil let her go and swirled around, releasing her and putting his back to her.
"Toh jaldi karo," he ordered.
"Darwazah to kolein."
"Yeah," he pressed the button on his remote and she hurried off.
He had felt such a strong sensation in the pit of his stomach when he was standing close to Sanam. Her breathlessness and flustered appearance was attracting him to her. And he was losing his senses as he stared into her eyes. Those eyes, which weren't just eyes but orbs of magic, magic that was enchanting him and awakening his once deep love for her...
