Chapter 5
Zoya saw his eyes, earnestly asking her to trust him. She looked into his eyes for a long time but the expression in them didn't change. She felt a lump forming in her throat not allowing her to say a word. She held is hand tightly between hers and put her forehead on their joined hands and cried. The tears and the sobs that she had been trying to suppress holding inside her and the pent up emotions gave way and she cried. Asad felt her tears run down his hand and it made his heart ache to see her cry. He couldn't believe this was the same girl who only a couple of hours ago was enjoying something as simple as gol gappas, as if they were a delicacy prepared by the best chef in the world. Asad held onto their joined hands with his other and pulled her a little closer. She didn't protest so he moved his free hand around her shoulders trying to comfort her the best way he could. Tears stung his eyes too as he saw her cry inconsolably. He could make out some broken words she was saying and after a lot of concentration he understood what she said. Between hiccups Zoya said "I don't belong Asad, I don't belong anywhere." She kept repeating it like a chant. It was becoming difficult for Asad to hold on to his tears but he didn't let go trying to comfort her. They stayed in the same position for a long time until Zoya was ready to talk. They moved away and Zoya started wiping her face with her sleeve. Asad looked at her and frowned and immediately took out his handkerchief. She looked up at him and quietly took it. When she was done Asad motioned her to sit and followed her to the bench.
As they sat down Zoya immediately looked at him and said "I'm so sorry Asad. I didn't mean to let go of my emotions before you but I don't know how... how the sincerity, the concern in your eyes... I couldn't avoid it and I broke down." She felt fresh tears forming in her eyes which she tried to hold back. Asad looked at her intently and nodded his head to indicate he understood. Zoya sat straight and so did Asad as an eerie silence engulfed them as the two sat side by side looking ahead staring at nothing specific.
Asad was the one to break the silence "Zoya, do you want to tell me what bothers you so much that you were inconsolable, that you are trying to defame yourself and are avoiding getting married to me? I know all these excuses about not knowing how to cook etc are lame, so that I refuse to get married to you. But I've already told you, you have won my mother's heart and she wants me to get married to you and I will do anything for her happiness. So unless you don't have anything concrete to say I think we should head home."
Zoya looked at him and then away. Playing with her fingers on her lap she said "I'm not avoiding getting married to you, I'm avoiding getting married to anyone." He looked at her as if asking to continue. "The way you love Dilshaad Phoophi, I love my Aapi n Jiju. I have always seen them not just like my elder sister and brother in law but as my parents too. I had never thought there will be a time I will have to leave them and go. I had always thought I will stay with them even if I got married." Remembering those times a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips, which was soon replaced by a frown. "Asad as I grew older I understood that every girl has to move into her husband's house and there is no way she can live with her parents after getting married." She looked at him to see if he was following what she said and he nodded asking her to go on.
"Only until a few days ago I was just scared of getting married as that would mean that my whole world would change. Starting from my clothes, my behavior, expectations from me, my relations, my house...even my name would change...but Aapi used to tell me it's normal. Feeling jittery about getting married is something every girl experiences. She said that though she had a love marriage she went through the same feelings just a night before her wedding."
Asad was unable to understand how these feelings she expressed were related to her not wanting to get married. "Zoya if you want we can discuss and get a solution for most of these things..." He was unable to complete when she cut him "it's not just these things Asad, there more, much much more..." He saw tears rolling down her cheeks and he held her hand to give her all the comfort she needed.
Zoya couldn't understand why it was so easy for her to pour her heart out to him. It had been barely 2 or may be 3 hours that she had met him and here she was on the verge of disclosing the biggest secret of her life, of her existence to him. Zoya looked at him trying to get the right words to tell him what she had discovered and why it had become a difficult decision for her to get married. Why this truth had shattered her dreams, dreams that any girl sees, where a prince comes and sweeps her off her feet and they live happily ever after. Why she feared that there would never be a happily ever after for her. No one would accept her. Only Allaha knew why she was telling Asad all this. But she had already started and there was no looking back.
With tears floating in her eyes she held Asad's gaze and poured her heart out to him. "Asad... I ...I don't know...if... (Allaha please help me she prayed in her heart)... I don't know where to begin and what to tell you. I don't know if you'll be able to understand me or not. It's just that since I can remember I have seen Aapi fuss over me all the time like my Ammi would have. She has brought me up like her own child. Though I address them as Aapi and Jiju they are more like my parents, MY Ammi and Abbu. Like you I can do anything for their happiness. Earlier whenever Aapi talked to me about marriage I would refuse as I had realized I will have to leave my home and them. I didn't want to go away from them but then over time and with Aapi constantly explaining I agreed but soon realize I would not fit in and no one would want a girl like me as their bride... due to these." She said pointing towards her scared arm.
"One such evening Aapi and I had an argument regarding my wedding and I had stubbornly told her that my scars don't let me be normal and no one in their right sense would want me as their bride and I refused to get married. My Aapi was too hurt to say anything more to me. She hugged me and cried and then left my room so I could rest for the night. I was unable to sleep for a long time so decided to go and apologize to her for my behavior. As soon as I reached her door I heard the biggest truth of my life. There are things that they never told me, things that I should have been aware of from the start. It's crazy..." she said raking a hand through her hair trying to calm herself "it's the biggest truth of my existence and I was not aware of it, not until a few weeks ago."
Asad looked how restless she was becoming. Tears had formed in her eyes again and threatened to spill any minute. He held her hand in his to comfort her. Zoya looked at him again and taking a deep breath said "Asad your family has a certain standing in society." He nodded his head in agreement. "Would you ... marry...marry a girl... a girl who is nobody?" Asad looked at her with confusion written all over his face. She pulled her hand free from his grip, stood up and walked a few steps away from him trying to calm her heart which was beating out of control. She turned around and saw Asad standing a few steps away from her. She looked at him and then turned away and in a whisper told him the truth "Asad I'm not Aapi's real sister. We don't share the same blood."
Asad kept his gaze on her back. He didn't know what to understand of her statement so in a tone as soft as hers he said "I don't understand."
She took a deep breath "Asad I was adopted. I don't know who my real parents are, where I came from or where my roots are. I'm a nobody, with no background to call my own."
"What does that have to do with you getting married?" he asked in a low voice.
She smiled a sad smile and answered his question "Asad would you or for that matter any other guy want to marry a girl whose identity is not known. I know all these things are looked into when an alliance is made, the answers to such questions make or break an alliance. After I accidentally got to know this truth I had told Aapi to disclose everything about me whenever she looks for a groom for me. But I have no idea if she's told Phoophi or you anything about this. Maybe she thought I was referring to my scars, she doesn't know I overheard their conversation the other day. " Zoya said all this with her back to him. She waited for him to say something but when she got no response from him she was convinced he had left her there.
She turned around and took two steps towards the park exit wanting to go back home when she heard him "Where are you going?"
She looked up and was shocked to see him standing in the same spot. "I... I thought you'd left..."
"Why will I leave you here alone?" he asked surprised.
"I don't know... didn't expect you to be here... after learning the truth." She blurted and then lowered her gaze not wanting to look into his eyes.
Asad looked at her smiled a little and said "Aapi told Ammi already. We know everything."
Zoya was shocked. As soon as Asad's words registered her eyes widened and her mouth went agape. She didn't know what to say and after a few moments Asad placed his finger under her chin and closed her mouth. She blinked several times and then saw him smiling. Though for some reason she was happy and felt relief wash over her, her eyes still brimmed with tears and she let them fall. Asad didn't like the site of her tears again and asked her "Now what is bothering you?"
She looked at him and he could see the hurt in her eyes. "So everyone knew except me. I, who deserved to be the first one to know the truth, have been kept in the dark. I didn't expect this from Aapi...She should have told me before disclosing the truth...no wait not the truth but the biggest truth of my life to anyone. She should have told me." Saying that Zoya let go of her tears and cried for being let down by the two most important people in her life. She felt Asad pulling her close and into his embrace rubbing her back to calm her down. She didn't protest as only Allaha knew why she felt relieved being in his arms. She shook her head to remove these thoughts from her mind and told herself the feeling came as she was emotionally too drained and needed the emotional support she received.
Asad on the other hand didn't have any qualms in holding her in his embrace as that seemed the right thing to do seeing her emotionally so weak and broken. They stayed like that until Zoya stopped crying and pulled herself away from him asking him to drop her home.
