CHAPTER: 10
When Asad reached Bhopal, he went straight to the hospital where he came to know that Tanveer had delivered a baby girl and as soon as they saw him, Dilshad and Najma ran to him, hugged him happily and congratulated him.
There were tears of joy in Dilshad's eyes and Asad himself felt teary when he entered the room and saw his small daughter for the first time. Wrapped in a white blanket she was sleeping peacefully in a crib near Tanveer's bed and Tanveer herself was in deep sleep. Asad knew she must be exhausted.
Asad wanted to take the baby but he was a little scared to do so and he did not want to disturb the baby's sleep as well. So instead of taking her, he reached out and tentatively touched the baby's soft cheek with the back of his index finger and when she continued to sleep he became bolder and caressed her cheeks lovingly. With his other hand he wiped the tears that had started to seep from his eyes, all the while looking at the baby with wonder. He could hardly believe that it was his own daughter lying there sleeping so peacefully.
Najma who could not contain her own happiness and excitement barged in to the room right that moment and held on to Asad's arm and they both continued to stare at the baby lovingly.
"Bhaijaan, you do remember your promise right?" She nudged Asad and whispered in his ears.
"Of course my sweet Tamatar... I give you the privilege of naming my little daughter." Asad hugged her sideways lovingly and kissed her head. Some days back they had all been discussing about the names for the baby and they could not agree on any name. Najma had then declared sweetly that if it turns out to be a girl she was going to name the baby and that whatever name she chose, others should agree. Najma had been Asad's baby all these days and although she was now a grown up 15 year old, Asad still indulged her and treated her as a baby and so he had immediately accepted her sweet request.
"Sunaina, Bhaijan.. I have chosen the name Sunaina for her." Najma looked at Asad's face excitedly.
Asad immediately liked the name, but he pretended to ponder about it.
"Now don't say you don't like the name" Najma hit him with her elbow playfully.
"Actually I like it Tamatar.. It's a beautiful name for my beautiful daughter." Asad smiled at Najma and then stared at his sleeping daughter lovingly once again.
They brought Sunaina home two days later and as days passed by Asad started to realize the real meaning of what his Ammi always said when she told him that the joy of having your own child was something beyond describable and something which he should also experience.
Their days passed by happily and Sunaina was 5 months old when Asad met Rehan once again. Rehan had come to Bhopal for a business related issue and had met Asad in his office. Asad had wanted to take him home for dinner but Rehan declined saying he had to leave Bhopal late evening, hence instead Asad had to take him for a coffee and snacks to a nearby coffee house. And all throughout the coffee Asad had sensed that Rehan wanted to talk to him about something. He had seen Rehan staring at him thoughtfully when he thought Asad was not looking.
And it was at the end of coffee, Rehan finally sighed and told Asad that he wanted to tell him something. Asad had become very curious by then and he immediately asked him what it was.
"I really don't know how to tell you this but I feel I should." Rehan sighed once again.
Asad didn't say anything and stared at Rehan questioningly and Rehan continued to look at him.
"It's about your wife Asad... about Tanveer." Rehan finally said
"About Tanveer?..." He was confused and surprised to know that what Rehan wanted to talk to him was about Tanveer and he wondered why Rehan was hesitating so much in telling him what he wanted to say.
"Yes Asad... it's about Tanveer and I'm afraid you may not like it when you hear what I have to say."Rehan looked at Asad with concern and Asad could very well decipher that look of concern and worry on his friend's eyes and wondered what it was that was bothering him so much.
"Tell me frankly what's in your mind Rehan... I think I can handle it." Asad finally told Rehan when he continued to hesitate.
"Asad, do you know anything about Tanveer's parents and her past? Did she tell you anything?" Rehan asked Asad.
"Past?... she told me that her parents passed away while she was in college and she used to live with an uncle since then." Asad told Rehan and upon hearing that, a frown appeared on Rehan's face.
"She didn't tell you anything else?... like how her mother passed away and her college life?" Rehan asked and Asad shook his head.
"Asad, I don't even know if this is true or not... But I have heard something about Tanveer sometime back which I feel I should tell you..." Rehan paused and looked at Asad's face with worry before continuing and Asad finally felt an unknown kind of fear grip him and he understood that what Rehan was going to tell him was not something good and he also felt that it was going to change his life in a big way.
"As you know, after high school I moved to Jabalpur where Tanveer was also living... and it was in the final year of college during our inter college cultural festival, that I met Tanveer for the first time since she left Bhopal as she was studying in another college... I was very happy to see her and I had invited her for lunch that day. A bunch of friends saw us talking that day and one of them was a guy studying in the same college as Tanveer, but stayed in our neighborhood and I had met him and got friendly with him at our neighborhood cricket grounds... and after seeing us talking, this guy later came to me and asked me if I knew Tanveer and I told him yes and that we went to school together in Bhopal... then he told me that Tanveer didn't have a good reputation in their college. He said that her father left them for another woman 3 years back and her mother committed suicide few months later...and since then she had been living with an uncle and that her behavior had changed a lot over the 3 years.. . may be the scandal and her Ammi's suicide affected her very badly... he then said that some of the girls who were her close friends had also distanced from her after her behavior changed and that they say she was having an affair with a rich businessman and would go to clubs and hotels with him and would even spend the night with that man... and as you know girls of respected families in our society doesn't behave that way, so her friends apparently tried to talk to her and change her behavior but she didn't and after that when her friends distanced from her, she apparently became too friendly with a few rowdy boys at college and at college she would always hang around with them, and everyone else stayed away from her... I was really surprised and sad after hearing everything that guy told me and I wanted to meet Tanveer and ask her about it and tell her to change her behaviour, but I did not see her after that and I did not know where she lived also... then after college I moved to Gwalior and it was about one and half years back I met her again... I had come to Jabalpur for a relative's funeral and had stayed at a hotel and I was just checking out when I saw her at the lobby of the hotel... That day I asked her how she was and what she was doing there and whether she was working anywhere and she told me she had dropped out of college soon after that cultural festival and since she did not get graduated, she was not able to get a job as well...but she said, she was OK and not to worry about her... I was again surprised to know that she dropped out of college, but I didn't have much time to talk to her more as it was almost time for my train, so I left."
Rehan finished narrating his story and looked Asad with worry once again. Asad did not know what to make out of the things Rehan told him. He was too confused, but one thing he understood was that if Rehan's story was true, then Tanveer had lied to him regarding her past. She had not told him that she had an affair with a man before but that could be said as a lie of omission, but what about saying her parents were dead? Asad wondered.
"Rehan what you mean to say is that from what you have heard, Tanveer's Abbu is still alive and married to another woman?" after thinking silently for a while, Asad asked Rehan for further clarification.
"Yes Asad, according to what I heard, he did not die... But Asad, I don't know if the rest of what I heard was even true or not... And I genuinely don't want any problems to get created in your marriage because of what I said... that's the reason why I hesitated in telling you but I felt that as a good friend of yours I should tell you this, incase this is true and you are not aware of her truth" Rehan told Asad remorsefully.
"Rehan, I am really shocked hearing what you said and I don't know what to believe... But I am glad you told me what you have heard... Most of the times, friends don't share these type of things, thinking its best to leave things as it is, but you shared this with me and I am thankful to you... but Rehan, I really don't know what to do about this information." Asad felt a lump forming in his throat.
"Asad, I think the best thing to do right now is don't think too much about it and let it be...don't even ask Tanveer about it right now... Because Asad, it could be that, what I heard was true and her past was not good but she has changed now and really wants to lead a good life with you and wants your marriage to work... And that could perhaps be the reason why she did not tell you about her past, fearing that you may not accept her and leave her if she told you that... And now you both have a child as well... So I think it's best not to confront her with this right now and leave it as it is... But even when I'm saying this, I know how hard it would be for you to do that and that's another reason why I didn't want to tell you this... but still I hope you will take my suggestion." Rehan advised Asad wisely like a true friend and Asad felt that Rehan was probably right.
And in the days that followed after Asad met Rehan, he tried to follow Rehan's advice and not think about that story, but it wasn't easy to do so. It was still hard for him to believe that Tanveer could have had a past like that and that she had not told him about it and he wanted to find out the truth, because not knowing the real truth was the thing which was bothering him the maximum.
But at the same time he wondered if he would be able to forgive Tanveer and accept her if he finds out that it was all true and at times he wondered if not knowing the truth was perhaps the best thing or not.
Three months passed this way with Asad not being able to decide what to do, and to avoid dealing with his personal problem he got more engrossed in work and even the time he spent with Sunaina had also become less.
And then one morning after breakfast he told his Ammi that he would not be having dinner that night as he had to go for a business related party that night. One of the projects that he started with his client, Mr.Feroz got completed and Feroz was throwing a party at his home to celebrate it. Asad usually did not like going to such parties but he felt that perhaps an evening out would do him good.
"Why don't you take Tanu also with you Asad? It would be nice for her also to go out and enjoy an evening out with you." Dilshad told Asad and looked at Tanveer who was sitting there trying to feed Sunaina.
Since couple of weeks, Dilshad had been observing that Asad had been spending very less time at home and she had also noticed that even when he was at home, he would hardly talk to Tanveer or even spent any time with Naina unlike earlier, so she had been wondering whether there was some problem between Asad and Tanveer and had even wanted to talk to Asad regarding it. So she grabbed that opportunity to make them go out together and spent some time together.
Asad could not find any excuse to refuse his Ammi's suggestion, so he agreed to it and asked Tanveer to be ready that evening.
****************************
When they entered Feroz's house that evening, several guests were already there and Asad saw Feroz standing at the entrance with Mr Mehta, a bank manager whom Asad also knew well and he went towards them and greeted both of them and introduced Tanveer as well.
"Good evening and nice to meet you Mrs.Khan." Mr. Mehta greeted Tanveer but Feroz completely ignored her and Asad noticed it and wondered why.
Feroz was an arrogant and snobbish man but Asad knew very well that he was proud of his etiquette as well so he wondered why Feroz did not even greet Tanveer, but Asad then dismissed the thought and proceeded to go to the main living room where the party was held.
Feroz was a man born with a silver spoon in his mouth, to rich parents and he had grown up as a typical spoilt rich kid; and as an only son, when his parents passed away he had inherited all their wealth and property. Even his house originally belonged to his parents and it was a colonial style old bungalow but few years back Feroz had renovated it according to his taste, and it has lost its original subtle charm and now stands as evidence to the boisterous and exuberant nature of him.
The entrance hall led to a large corridor with doors on both side and Asad got confused as to which way to go, and Tanveer held Asad's arm and directed him to a half open huge door on the right side.
"Asad it's this way." Tanveer said and Asad wondered how she knew the way so easily.
"I can see some guests through the door." Tanveer pointed to the half open door and replied as if sensing Asad's thoughts.
The dinner got over about an hour later and Tanveer told Asad that she wanted to use the rest room and went inside through another side door on the left. Asad had liked the food and had enjoyed meeting some business related friends and acquaintances but the continuous chit chatting and the noises made by some of Feroz's louder friends had gotten to him and he felt as if he was going to get a migraine, so he wanted to leave as soon as Tanveer came.
Almost half an hour passed but Tanveer did not return back and Asad wondered what was delaying her. Finally after another ten minutes or so he got up and went towards the door through which Tanveer had gone. He opened the door to see that it led to another corridor with huge paintings hanging from its walls and he could again see several doors on either side of the corridor and he wondered which way was the rest room. He walked along the corridor up to its one end and he saw that there was a small bend to the right and at a corner hidden from the main corridor there was a door leading to another room. The door was half open and the light inside was dim and Asad opened the door a bit more to see that it was a large posh study with a large mahogany desk in the center and wall length bookshelves on one side.
Asad was about to close the door and walk away, when he noticed another half open door on the left side of the study leading to what looked like another small sitting area. Asad did not know why but something pulled him towards that room and his footsteps carried him silently along the plush carpet of the study towards that room. But when he almost reached the door, what he saw through the half open door made his feet stop and he got rooted to the spot not able to believe what he saw.
Even that small room was not lit properly but there was a lamp on one corner which cast enough light for Asad to clearly see his wife Tanveer in the arms of Feroz, both kissing each other passionately, and Asad just stood frozen in shock not able to do anything except go on seeing them as if it was something happening in reel in front of him and he was not at all involved in it.
"Tanveer I think you better go from here... what if someone comes here and saw us together." Asad heard Feroz saying and finally his trance broke and Asad wanted to go and do something damaging to both of them but instead once again his feet carried him silently back the way he came.
Asad did not know how he came out of Feroz's house and got into his car. He drove aimlessly not really knowing where he was going. He could neither see the road he was going nor the vehicles that passed by and the only thing that flashed across his vision was the picture of his wife Tanveer in the arms of another man with his lips locked with hers. It was a miracle he drove without getting into an accident and after what felt like hours of driving he stopped the car to see that he had reached the lakeside, a place where he always used to come whenever he was disturbed by something. He came out of the car and stood staring at the lake but over the horizon of the lake also, what he saw that night was only that same picture of Tanveer and Feroz together.
He could not still comprehend what he saw and although he knew very well that his eyes did not deceive him, his mind still refused to believe and accept what he saw.
He closed his eyes tightly in an attempt to shut out the image, but even when he closed his eyes, the image persisted in front of him and he opened his eyes in frustration. He then remembered Rehan's words and what he told about Tanveer and without a doubt he knew that Rehan was telling the truth. Everything became clear to him and he understood what kind of a person his wife really was but he was still too shocked to even think beyond what he understood and he did not know what he should do.
After a while he realized that he had been sitting at the lake side for quite a longtime and he thought it best to go home.
When he entered his room he was shocked to see Tanveer on the bed and already asleep. He wondered how she came home and what she must have told his mother because Naina was with his Ammi and she would have definitely asked Tanveer about Asad when she went to get Naina.
And when he looked at the innocent face of the sleeping Tanveer, Asad felt like shaking her, wake her up and shout at her asking why she did it, but he did neither and went to his bathroom to change. He came out and lay down on the edge of his side of the bed, facing the opposite side so that he did not have to see Tanveer and he closed his eyes. But the moment he did, he felt Tanveer turn and shift on the bed and then he heard her sleepy voice.
"Asad, when did you come back? I lost you at the party and I could not find you anywhere, so finally I came home in a taxi."
Hearing her say that, Asad clenched his hands in anger but managed to keep his eyes shut and he pretended to be asleep. After a while, when he did not hear anything more from Tanveer, he knew that she had slept again. He then got up from the bed and went out as he knew that he would not be able to sleep on the same bed where Tanveer was sleeping. He lay on the living room Sofa and tried to sleep but after a while he realized that sleeping was not something that he would be able to do that night. He tossed and turned the whole night and finally fell asleep sometime in the early hours of the morning, to be woken up by his mother soon after that.
"Asad, why are you sleeping here? Did Naina cry in the night and disturb you?" Dilshad asked
Asad froze and then mumbled a yes before dashing into his room to see that Tanveer was still sleeping. He saw that Naina was awake and making little gurgling noises but he did not have the urge to even pick her. So instead he went to take his bath. The cool waters of the shower calmed him a little and he came out and quickly dressed and left the room before Tanveer woke up. He told his Ammi that he had an early morning appointment, gulped down his cup of coffee and left without even eating anything.
Once in the office, he tried to block out everything that happened and concentrate on his work, but that was impossible to do and all he could do was sit and stare at nothing and wonder why Allah has subjected him to this.
He came home wearily late that night, exhausted from the emotional turmoil. Al though he had called his Ammi earlier that night and told her not to wait for him, she was still waiting and so in order to avoid the questions that would follow if he did not eat anything , he sat and tried to have something.
"Naina was crying a lot whole evening and I think Tanveer is exhausted after trying to pacify her, because when I checked she has fallen asleep, and normally she would not sleep like that... so I waited for you even though you said not to wait."
Hearing his Ammi speak about Tanveer with such high regard, Asad felt like vomiting. He could not swallow any more food and he wanted to get up and run away from there and even from his home, but because of his Ammi, he could not do any such thing and he forced himself to swallow some more food.
Two days passed this way. He kept to himself and remained calm in front of his Ammi and avoided talking to Tanveer. And he kept on wondering what he should do and how to bring the matter out into open with Tanveer and then finally on the third day he decided what he would do.
He called Mr. Feroz to his office in the pretext of signing some papers and when he came Asad locked the door of his room and confronted him. He went straight to the point and told him that he saw him and Tanveer together and that there was no point in denying it.
Asad had never really liked Feroz but he was always cordial with him and had tried to get along with him so he was in a way equally upset with Feroz as he was with Tanveer for doing something like that behind his back.
"How could you do it?" Asad grabbed the collar of Feroz's shirt and shook him vigorously.
"Asad ! calm down" Feroz held his hands and tried to remove his hands.
"Calm down?" Asad asked Feroz sarcastically.
"Yes Asad... what had happened has happened and regardless of how much you hurt me physically, it won't change. And to tell you the truth, I am glad you have found out the truth. You may not even believe me when I say this, but I was actually feeling guilty about it when I found out that she is your wife and that's a first for me... Asad I have always been a Kamina' but your wife turned out to be even more Kamina than me while you are the most honest and straight man I have ever come across."
"No need to praise me... I am not in a mood to hear all that... all i want to know right now is the truth... the whole truth... When and where did you meet her?" Asad folded his arms across his chest and looked at Feroz squarely in the eyes. He was hurting, he was angry, he felt like hitting Feroz or throw everything around and then sit and give in to his emotions and cry his heart out, but he was after all a man and regardless of how much more the truth would hurt him, he had decided that the first thing he would do was get the truth out of Feroz and next he would face that truth and then after that he would decide what he would do with that truth.
Feroz looked at Asad's unwavering stare and understood that Asad would not let him go without getting the truth out of him and he sighed in resignation.
"I met her at a small informal business get together in a hotel. She came there with a friend of mine, who introduced her to me saying she was looking for someone to invest in a clothing factory she was planning to start and I told her that I would think about it and let her know through my friend later... and I hate to tell you this but she was the one who pursued me after that night... she started calling me daily and finally I gave in and met her... then it led to more meetings and we were having a fully fledged affair by the time I came to know that she had actually gotten married quite recently. And then I enquired who her husband is and I became more shocked to know that it's you...I was shocked for two reasons... first because you and me are business associates and we were already working together... second because I expected Tanveer's husband to be someone not well off and had thought may be that was the reason why she is going after other well off men even after her marriage...anyway, from that day onwards, I stopped seeing her, but she continued to call me and would even land up at my house unannounced. And after some days, I thought why I should feel guilty when she was the one who was throwing herself at me, and I started seeing her again... it was only in the latter months of her pregnancy that she stopped seeing me and then we did not meet till that night in the party."
Asad could not believe what he heard; although deep down in his heart he knew that Feroz was telling the truth, it was still hard for him to believe that Tanu his childhood friend would stoop so low.
"How do I know that you are telling the truth? How do I know that you have not used force on her and that you are the one who went after her and may be forced her?" Asad taunted Feroz.
Feroz, who was quite calm and subdued all throughout his talk, started laughing hysterically after hearing what Asad said.
"Asad, come out of your bubble... you may think that I am a person without any principles, ethics and in a way may be you are right as well but even I have certain things in which I believe in... and to tell you the truth your wife is not even my taste, and I would have never approached her on my own... it was her own persistence which made me start seeing her... but then later yea she knows to be really charming and knows how to keep a man entwined around her and even I got sort of hooked to her." Feroz chuckled and Asad felt disgusted hearing what he said.
"And Asad, when you called me today I had a feeling that it's not about signing any papers... for one thing, you called me yourself instead of asking your assistant to do so and asked me to come here at lunch time when there won't be many people at the office. So I had a hunch it's about Tanveer and I came prepared... because I knew you would have a hard time believing what I say and would accuse me just like you did just now..."saying this, Feroz took out an envelope from his pocket and held it to Asad.
"See this yourself... then you would know that the woman here is not someone who is doing something under force or threat."
Asad took the envelope but he could not bring himself to open it and see what was inside and he kept on staring at the envelope numbly and he did not even know what to say to Feroz anymore.
"Asad, the affair with me wasn't the only secret of Tanveer... i found out sometime back that she was having another affair with an elderly married man before she got married to you and the reason why she came to Bhopal was because that man's wife came to know about it and threatened to get a divorce if he did not stop the affair and so to be away from Tanveer, he moved to Bhopal with his family and Tanveer followed him... but then I guess she met you and stopped pursuing that man." Feroz folded his arms across his chest and looked at Asad intently before continuing what he was saying.
"So Asad, I feel bad to tell you this, but the truth is that your wife is actually a cheap gold digger and a scrupulous woman who only knows one thing... and that is to use men for her own gains... she must have married you because you are an upcoming businessman, already quite well off and she must have foreseen that you would become even more rich in future... plus you are young and good looking, in other words a perfect catch... but even then, she was not content to stay with you alone, hence she cheated you and came after me... the problem with you Asad is you are too honest yourself and innocent... it's time you face the reality of the world." Having said this Feroz walked out of Asad's cabin, while Asad stood rooted on the same stop, clutching the envelope Feroz gave with one hand.
And Feroz's words kept ringing in his ears... "your wife is a cheap gold digger... she must have married you for your wealth... She cheated you... its time you faced the reality."
Asad sank in to his chair lifelessly. He felt as if his whole world had come crashing down... he knew that what Feroz told was the truth, but still he was finding it difficult to believe that his wife, his friend from childhood could betray him this way. Theirs wasn't a love a marriage, but he liked Tanveer and had trusted her because she was his friend from childhood. Not only him, but his Ammi had trusted her and thought her to be a nice girl with tehzeeb' and Tameez'. And after she became pregnant he had completely accepted her in his life as his wife and had started looking forwards to a future with her and their children. But what had she done behind his back and given him in return? She had shattered all his dreams and made a fool of him.
Asad slowly tore the envelope and took out its contents. They were 3 photographs. In the first one, Tanveer was lying on a bed, propped up on her elbow and her body was covered with a sheet but it did not cover the upper part of her chest and arms, and it was evident she was not wearing anything beneath the sheet. And she was smiling at the camera seductively.
In the second photo she was wearing a dressing gown and hugging Feroz from side, once again smiling broadly at the camera. In the third, she was sitting in Feroz's lap with her hands around his neck and kissing him on his cheek.
Feroz was right ...from these photos it was evident that she was with Feroz in her own will and enjoying it. Asad threw the photos across his room and banged his fist on his desk. Feroz was right. It's time he face the harsh reality, and its time he went and confronted Tanveer.
