Update sooon, Sadie !
Part 3
oOo
"No, no, no Humaira I'm not going shopping for this. I have a few dresses at home and we'll select from them." I tried reasoning with Humaira but there's just no reasoning with that stubborn lass.
"Oh trust me Zoya I have seen your dresses and honestly did you inherit those dresses from your grandmother? Don't even think for one second that I will let you go on an annual ball looking like a twenties girl. Nope, so not happening! We are going shopping and we are going NOW!" she practically dragged me towards the mall not caring a dime about anything else.
"Ok, ok I'll come, now will you stop dragging me? People might think I'm drunk or something." I whispered to her when I got a few weird glances from people. Humaira left my hand and ran inside the mall while I tried to keep up with her. I hate shopping. I would only go shopping when appi would chew my ears off asking me to go shopping. I never really understood why people say they have nothing to wear even though their closets are overflowing with clothes.
I followed Humaira who was as usual jumping and squealing and skipping around and I again felt bad for her. There must be so much she had wanted to do before she died. Those big eyes must've held so many dreams. But, alas! Who can control life or death? If it's meant to happen then it will happen. I made a mental note to ask her about the cause of her death some other time. It couldn't be a natural death, she was way too young for any type of diseases. It definitely couldn't be cancer as her hair was thick and long unlike the hair of this other ghost I had met who had died of cancer.
I stopped outside this shop which sold beautiful gowns and dresses. The dresses looked elegant and stunning. I stood outside admiring them. I remembered when I was a teenager and I would stand like this outside a dress shop looking at the dresses from the window. I would just watch but never buy. Appi would always tell me to buy one of them if I liked them so much but I would just shrug and walk away. I never needed them, for whom would I buy? For whom would I wear them? I was never asked out on a date, never even asked out for prom and I couldn't find the courage to ask any guy for the girl's choice dance. Men usually go for those all beauty but no brains type girls. Girls who hide their faces behind their thick hair and big glasses are conveniently ignored. I had never wanted anyone to notice me but now when I want a guy to notice me he doesn't even know I exist. I am kinda glad that Humaira took me shopping and that she will help me dress up, although I would never admit it to her, don't want to feed her already huge ego. I honestly had no idea how to dress up at such events. I was going out on a date, ok a surrogate date but a date none the less.
I looked at the shop again and my gaze fell at a very beautiful gown. It was simple yet elegant, tight on the chest and then flared down at the feet with a satin bow sash just below the chest. It was bright red in colour with a sweetheart neckline. I was so busy staring at it that I didn't notice when Humaira came and stood beside me.
"Buy it!" she almost screeched in my ear.
"Geez woman you need to stop doing that."
"I had selected some other dress for you but this one is stunning. Buy it" she pretended like she didn't hear me.
"For whom? For whom will I wear it?"
"Um are you obtuse or something? You have a date, what's a better occasion to wear that dress. Wear it for your date."
"My date? I thought I was your surrogate." I winked at her.
"Haw, is it really you Zoe? You know how to joke?" Humaira's eyes widened in a dramatic response.
"I'm a journalist, of course I know how to joke."
"You can be sarcastic Zoya, in fact you excel in it but I never thought you could joke. And you are right you are MY surrogate and I say you wearing that dress." She didn't even wait for my answer and walked right through the door. I rolled my eyes and walked inside the shop.
"Yes ma'am how may I help you?" the smiling saleslady asked me.
I saw Humaira nodding her head at me and pointing at the dress. I sighed and turned to look at the saleslady.
"Yes, I would like to buy that dress." I pointed towards the dress.
"Perfect choice ma'am." The lady smiled at me.

Practically all my clothes were on my bed, I was having such a hard time deciding what to wear. I never had difficulty deciding my clothes but today was a different affair. I had finally mustered up some courage to ask her out. Of course the whole you-have-to-cover-the-annual-ball story was a cover up. If I would've just asked her to come with me as my date she would've definitely turned me down so I had to come up with a different reason. I could never ask her out directly. She was the type of girl who never dated, or at least that's what I have heard from her girlfriends.
"Or maybe she has someone else on her mind!" a voice deep inside my head said. I mentally scowled at it. I shook my head and picked up the tuxedo I had finally settled on wearing.
I wonder what will Zoya look like, I have never seen her in anything other than those formal shirts and trousers. I have never even seen her in casual. My thoughts were interrupted when Zaid barged into my room as if he owned the place. He flopped on the bed not even bothering to push the clothes aside.
"You are going to crease my tuxedos, get off the bed you buffoon!" I threw the pillow at him, he got up with a groan and sat on the love seat. He looked at me trying to select which tie to wear and he smirked.
"Getting ready for the nerdy eh?" he winked.
"She has a name. A very beautiful name so I'd rather you call her by her name." I said with gritted teeth.
"Yeah, yeah whatever! I just don't get what you like in her. She is so, err, plain." He made a face.
"Look if you can't say anything good about her then please don't say anything bad about her, at least not in front of me lest I'll be tempted to break your nose."
"Whoa, whoa, where did that come from? All I'm asking is what you see in her. Tanveer was really hoping that you'd ask her. Just pray she doesn't come to know you went with Zoya. The poor girl will be shredded into pieces." He laughed.
"She won't, Zoya is very strong." I said in her defense.
"She looks pretty meek to me." He shrugged. I frowned at him and continued searching my closet for any suitable tie to go with my suit.
"And she is creepy, mysterious. I've heard she even talks to herself." I don't understand why was he trying to poison my mind.
"Well you do stuff creepier then her. I'm not going to believe anything about Zoya unless I see it with my own two eyes. Now get out I need to get ready." I waved him off. He sighed and left my room.

I could hardly recognize the person staring back at me. I raised my one hand and touched the mirror. Was it really me? Humaira had done a fabulous job. I turned to look at her who was clapping her hands in glee. I gave her a thumbs up and she bowed down mouthing a 'you're welcome'. I patted my dress and touched my hair.
"No touching my master piece." Humaira reprimanded me.
"I look, wow!"
"Not even modest about it, eh?" She giggled.
The dress looked amazing on me. Humaira kept my makeup minimal, a slight touch of blush on my cheeks, eyeliner, mascara and red lipstick. My glasses were long gone and my hair was curled and pulled over at my left side with a red flower brooch pinned behind my right ear. I was wearing my mother's diamond stud earrings and a diamond bracelet that my aapi and jeeju had gifted me on my 21st birthday. My neck was bare; Humaira said the sweetheart neckline of my dress was more than enough. I slipped into the red suede stilettos which Humaira had forced me to buy. They were basic rounded peep toes with a bow tie on the side.
Just then Appi walked in and her eyes widened when she looked at me. She immediately ran towards me and took me in for a hug. I saw Humaira cringe obviously worried that her "master piece" will be ruined.
"Allah, Is it really you Zoya? Haaye, my child looks so different. You look beautiful Zoya." She praised me and did that action people usually do to ward off any evil eyes. I rolled my eyes at her antics. I heard the sound of a car pull in our driveway.
"That must be your date, I'll ask him to come inside." Appi winked at me and left. I groaned, how many times I have to tell her I'm just covering the event there, date is just part of the deal. I grabbed my wrap and clutch and looked around searching for Humaira. Someone tapped my shoulder and I turned around to see Humaira dressed in a cute baby pink dress. Her hair tied in an elegant twist with a few tendrils deliberately let loose.
"Wow how'd you manage to do that?" seriously I never really understood how these ghosts dressed? Where'd they get the dresses from? Was there a kind of mall for them?
"Simple I just imagined the dress and the hair style on me and tada!"
"That's it? That's how you dress up?" I asked.
"Well the condition here is, whatever we imagine should be something that we have seen before when we were alive."
"Aw, so if you were to roam on Earth for the next, let's say fifty years then you'd still be wearing out-dated, old fashioned clothes? How will the fashion police Humaira manage then?" I clicked my tongue.
"Don't make fun of my miseries." She pouted.
"Zoya, come fast Asad is waiting for you." Appi called out to me. I took a last glance at myself in the mirror and walked out of the room.

I pulled up on her driveway and parked the car there. I ran a hand through my hair and fixed my bow tie and the pocket square. I took a deep breath and walked out of the car.
Her house was small but quiet charming. A lovely yellow porch and a small garden in the backyard. Before I could ring the door-bell some woman opened the door. She introduced herself as Zoya's aapi and I knew I had to impress her if I wanted to impress Zoya.
"Salamwalekum!"
"Walekumsalam Asad, Zoya will be out soon!" she smiled at me and motioned me to come inside. I walked inside while looking around the house. It was very warm and cozy. I sat down on the sofa, waiting for Zoya.
"Would you like something to drink?" Zoya appi offered.
"No, I'm fine!" I declined and then looked around searching for Zoya's room. Her appi must have sensed it and smiled apologetically.
"Girls! They take a lot of time in getting ready." She then called out to Zoya. Within few minutes she walked out and I could feel my jaw dropping on the ground. I had never seen her like this. She was beautiful yes, but today she looked ethereal, absolutely breath-taking and I knew all the men in the party were going to curse me tonight.

Next part will definitely be the surrogate date and sorry but the next update of this FF will be very late as I have other FFs to update and even Ankie's mangalpur š
