PART 2
oOo
"So the sales of our magazine have increased. That's good guys, really very good. Zaid you need to work harder on your page. Your articles although nice are very bland, how about you make it a little creative. If you want you can use one of the photographers to capture some pictures for your article. Rehaan did you manage to get Mr Sehgal's appointment? We need the interview A.S.A.P!" Asad kept addressing various people asking them about their pages and columns and discussing any types of changes they might need. I on the other hand was just looking at him, nodding whenever necessary and doodling on my notepad.
"I came here to see if there are any other hot men but there are none. I was right Zoya, your boss is HOTNESS PERSONIFIED!" I gasped when the ghost girl suddenly came in front of me. Damn the girl! Oh wait she already is. What the hell is she doing here? Ignore her Zoya you don't wanna make a fool of yourself in front of everybody. So I ignored her and looked straight ahead.
"Talk to me Zoe!!!" Geez, that's such a weird name. I rolled my eyes.
"You know the malls here suck! Big time!" she grimaced, I frowned at her, hoping she would shut up.
"But don't you worry darling I saw a very beautiful outfit for you." This girl was irritating me. And what did she mean by "I saw a beautiful outfit for you"?
"And you are just as boring as ever." She sighed and walked away. I relaxed when she went but the very next moment my eyes turned wide as saucers when I saw her walk towards Asad. Oh god, not again! I shook my head at her, indicating her to not do whatever she was planning but she conveniently ignored me.
Asad was standing with both his hands on the table. The ghostie stood beside him and checked him out. She was blatantly ogling him. I face-palmed myself. Could this girl be any more embarrassing? Thank god no one could see her.
She looked up to see me and I glared at her, warning her to stop!
Asad now stood straight with his left hand on his hip as he half-turned to indicate a particular thing on the slideshow. The ghostie smirked and linked her arms with his. She waved at me and then rested her head on Asad's shoulder, all the while giggling like a school girl. I groaned at her childish behavior.
"Zoya?" Asad called.
"Y-Yes sir?" I tried not to giggle at the scene in front of me.
"Are you alright?" he asked concerned.
"Yeah! Everything is..fine!" I tried sounding normal. He nodded once and went back to showing the slideshow.
The ghostie then flopped down on Asad's chair and then pretended to be the CEO, nodding her head at Asad with a serious, grave look on her face. I couldn't help smile at her childish antics. God she is such a baby, I frowned. She actually was pretty young. How old could she be? 20-21 years old? That was still a very young age to die.
I looked at her smile and giggle and make funny expressions and tears pricked my eyes. For the first time I felt sad for a ghost. I wondered what had happened with her. She was so jovial and chirpy, chirpier than any other spirits I've come across.
She didn't deserve to die so young. Well no one does but then that's just the way it works.
"Zoya..Zoya?" I was snapped out of my reverie by Asad.
"Yeah!"
"I was just saying that in our last edition the biggest hit was your article. We've got number of mails saying how much they loved the article, the meaning behind it, the emotions, the witty one liners and they even said they would love to read more from you. So, congratulations Ms Zoya Farooqui you just got your very own column." Asad said excitedly and everyone clapped. For me!
I couldn't comprehend what was happening. I blinked a few times to check whether I was day-dreaming. The ghostie nudged my shoulder and flashed her megawatt smile.
"Ok I didn't understand much but I know you just got promoted, so congratulations Zoe!" she clapped enthusiastically.
"Umm, woh, uh, err." I stuttered and stammered and blushed. Not sure what to say or do.
"Thanks!" I said in a soft voice. Thanking both Asad and the girl. God I need to at least ask her name if she was planning to hang out around here for some more time.
"Ok everyone has been assigned their tasks and their deadlines so let's get back to work, shall we?" Asad smiled at everyone. I rose from my seat, gathered my stuff and walked towards the door only to be stopped by Asad.
"Zoya can I have a word with you please." Asad said while looking at his laptop. I nodded, he pointed at the chair beside him and I went there wondering what he wanted to talk about.
"So how's the article coming up?" he switched off the laptop and turned to look at me with his always-there-warm-smile.
"Article?"
"The one you were working on."
"It's almost done, only proof-reading is left then I'll send it to the editor." I said. I was pretty confident about this article. It was a topic that I always wanted to write about.
"Cool! So what are you doing tonight?" he asked. I furrowed my brows, why would he ask me about my plans for the night?
"Umm, I don't know! Nothing much actually."
"Well there's this Annual Charity Ball held by the Mayor's wife and I want you to cover it, you know write a report on it, it'll be published in the next edition of the magazine."
"WHAT?" I yelled
"Yeah, you have to go there, enjoy, drink and then write a report on it." He explained.
"But I don't cover events, that is.."
"Ryan's job, I know but he isn't free tonight plus I have to be there too and I need a date, so I was thinking if you could come with me, this way I'll have a date and you get to cover the event. Two aims with one arrow." He winked.
I didn't know what to respond. It would be a golden opportunity for me to cover such a big event and I always wanted to go to such galas and balls. The deal he threw at me was very tempting and there was no harm in accepting it. I bit my lip and thought for a while.
"Okay!" I smiled. Sure it would be weird to go to a ball with my boss's date but I really want to cover it.
"Great! I'll pick you up at 8 and oh, it's black tie." He sprang from his chair and exited the room.
I slumped further down on my chair, I looked at the ghost-girl who had been there the whole time.
"Did you see what just happened?" I asked her.
"Yes! I just got a date with your hot boss!" she squealed.
"WHAT? YOU got a date? Care to explain how?" I got up and placed my hands on my hips.
"See, you get to go out with him which means I get to go out with him since I go everywhere you go. It's not rocket science." She ruffled my hair.
"So I'll be your and Asad's surrogate date?" I tried very hard to stifle the giggle that threatened to erupt but when I saw her nodding with a cute, enthusiastic expression on her face I couldn't help chuckle. I was right, she really is such a baby.
She took both my hands in hers and said,
"Oh Zoya the dress I've selected for you is perfect. All we have to do is go to the mall and buy it." She did a happy dance.
"Whoa stop right there ghostie. You are not dressing me. I am going to wear whatever I want to wear." I said sternly.
"Look missy you are my surrogate so you'll wear I want you wear! Pretty please with a cherry on the top." She pleaded.
"Fine!" I said with gritted teeth.
"Oh and FYI I have a name so will you just stop calling me 'ghostie'? It's offensive, I think I made it clear to you before."
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Humaira. Humaira Siddhiqui!" she beamed at me.
