seriously a skirt had such a deep effect on you and your mom?..wow..I mean there are so many dresses people wear on shows- and I dont get what is out and in character for a choice of cloth a person wears!!..girls of all thinking-modern,traditional etc etc wear skirts and a piece of cloth does not determine what kind of a person you are..it is depressing to see woman react like this!..
Just like Zoya said in the show- those were her clothes not her character..this is narrow mindset which attaches clothes to a type of character..if someone describes a small town simple girl than automatically people vision her as a salwaar kameez clad chasmish girl!..why cannot a simple small town girl be jeans or skirt wearing person?..
I can only request u to think broadly and being a woman understanding all the more the importance of not supporting such thoughts because if we will be so regressive how can we expect others to respect us and our choices.

I agree that Surbhi has nice legs. But that has nothing to do with Zoya's character!

Since you mentioned TRPs coming from the older generation...My mom loved the scene--she totally loved Zoya in the skirt and the way she boldly confronted Asad!..Also, my mom almost never watches the same scene again but my mom actually watched this scene twice which isn't normal..she absolutely loved the whole scene..Zoya's character, her skirt, her conversation with Asad!!!
So while your mom didn't like it, my mom did..!!! Just like here some of us didn't have any problem with the scene and some of us did, same goes for the older generation..some loved and some didn't!

Yeah I guess everyone has different opinions, even our mothers! (: Each to his own I suppose.

I agree with u. Even if ppl stand up for her and say that she was just doing it for najma, she said she wore it in the U.S. which kind of spoilt the picture a lot of us had. I'd also liked that zoya was not all traditional, but still she dressed decently. I think the mini skirt thing erased the part of our mind which thought zoya was a modern yet conserved girl. I know half of us won't agree but still guys, u have to agree that the picture u had of Zoya in NY is not there anymore. I mean, if the cvs had shown zoya from the beginning as a girl who did dress like a normal nyc girl wud, then in that case I seriously wudnt have cared, coz that wud hav been the picture I had from the beginning. But suddenly bringing in a micromini is totally out of the character Zoya has. And I agree that clothes do play a role in ur character to an extent. Seriously, cudnt they have made her wear at least a little longer skirt? CVs really hav gone loose in the head. I'm not trying to hurt anyone here. Plz dont bash me for this.

Ah you've voiced my thoughts perfectly (: My image of Zoya is now ruined!

I love your post. There is not an element of it i can disagree with. It was just perfectly written and holds the same reasons why I did not like the scene either. Whether or not as a viewer you agree with the length, it is totally out of character.

The scene was written to increase TRPs - nothing else. They goal was to make the point that your clothing does not define you and there was no reason to go to such a degree to make this point. It could have been done with a skirt that was mid thigh or a dress that Zoya was wearing to a sporting event but left her clothes or lost them and showed up at the house without them.

The whole Najma asking her to wear the skirt or even that she wore such clothing was totally out of character and came out of left field. If the writers wanted to point out that she was a conservative dresser at the Qu'ran Khanni and how she was always covered with jeans and a full length shirt, this new Zoya in a micro mini came out of left field and totally put me off just like it did your mother.

I personally found it distasteful, and so did my mom. I don't know how many other people felt this way, but if they did, then it's a punch in the stomach for the TRPs rather than making it increase. And yeah, about your bold point, it feels like two contradictory messages from the CVs, totally messing up the image I had of Zoya in my mind!

Yup exactly how I felt too! It's like the message at that time and the message this time are totally contradictory, making Zoya's character less believeable as well.

Butchered her character mercilessly? Like Zoya said, she does wear skirts in the US, but she knows it isn't a s culturally acceptable there in India. Wearing a skirt doesn't butcher her character; it just shows that she's mindful that different clothes should be worn based on one's cultural surroundings.

Moreover, it's a little sad that people get so put off by someone's choice of apparel. It's not as if she wore a miniskirt with a low-cut top. It was a balanced outfit. Conservative does not have to do with what a person wears. It's not the 17th century when women had to be covered up to prevent being morally shamed.

I loved the scene and especially her dialogue :) They gave Zoya's character and American upbringing more dimension.

I'm just saying it butchered that facet of her character to me, not her entire character as a whole. If she was as mindful as you said, why did she even bring such a skirt with her to India? Anyway I just think that you and I had different ideas about the NY-wali Zoya to begin with. I saw her as a modern yet conservative person (in-line with her being Muslim), but you saw her as an all-out American girl from the start. So I'll just agree to disagree (:

I agree that clothes might cause people to be judged, but they DO NOT define a person. Again, the intent behind wearing the skirt just seemed more like something she was comfortable with. Imagine if people were so quick to object and form decisions based on clothing: quite frankly, though I know this isn't necessarily always true, people could think wearing a salwar suit all the time is limiting and oppressive in India.

Also, as a classical dancer and singer, though I was born and brought in California, I like to believe that India culture is so strong that one harmless skirt doesn't mean anything at all.

I'm not even talking about the Indian culture and whatnot. I'm also not saying that clothes define a person completely. But your choice of clothes does have something to do with your character, they are not two separate entities. All I'm saying is that the skirt did not go with my earlier idea of how Zoya is, separate from anything to do with culture or traditions.
