Butchered her character mercilessly? Like Zoya said, she does wear skirts in the US, but she knows it isn't a s culturally acceptable there in India. Wearing a skirt doesn't butcher her character; it just shows that she's mindful that different clothes should be worn based on one's cultural surroundings.
Moreover, it's a little sad that people get so put off by someone's choice of apparel. It's not as if she wore a miniskirt with a low-cut top. It was a balanced outfit. Conservative does not have to do with what a person wears. It's not the 17th century when women had to be covered up to prevent being morally shamed.I loved the scene and especially her dialogue :) They gave Zoya's character and American upbringing more dimension.

If you argue clothes don't define a person, then a low cut topic should not be called into a question as making this outfit appropriate. And dressing conservatively doesn't require that a person be covered up. Their a conservative lengths for a skirt, even a mini - a mid thigh one would have made more sense, looked presentable and still have worked.

I agree that clothes might cause people to be judged, but they DO NOT define a person. Again, the intent behind wearing the skirt just seemed more like something she was comfortable with. Imagine if people were so quick to object and form decisions based on clothing: quite frankly, though I know this isn't necessarily always true, people could think wearing a salwar suit all the time is limiting and oppressive in India. Also, as a classical dancer and singer, though I was born and brought in California, I like to believe that India culture is so strong that one harmless skirt doesn't mean anything at all.

It was such a small scene. I was affected zero percent by it.. Have you seen the stuff they show in movies? Why go to the movies? Switch on MTV...It's like the audience is mostly immune. To the Indian audience... i'd say it's not such a big deal at all.
