Aaannnddd here it is! looks like its gonna have another part, as what i'd planned to write, turned out to be almost 10 pages long... 😲 you guys would probably go off to sleep, reading all that in one go... anyway, enjoy! 😃
"Why the F**K isn't this blasted thing working?!" a very annoyed zoya screamed at the screen.
"Language, Mona Darling" warned Ayaan from beside her, almost choking himself with barely controlled laughter.
"Oh, really?! You make me wait for two hours before you turn up with this stinking piece of sh*t, which won't even work properly, and you want me to watch my language, you-"
"It was working fine at my place! There's something wrong with your TV!"
"It's not my TV! It's your dearest bhaijaan's TV, who's not at home at the moment. So, if you want to bitch around about it, go and tell him!"
"You stay here too! Can't you ask him to do something about it?"
"If you haven't noticed it yet, smarty pants, I don't own an xbox, at the moment. How the hell am I supposed to know what works here, and what doesn't?"
"Well, you should've checked!"
"With whom? You think Mr. Khan even knows what an xbox is?"
"Well, then don't blame me! I'm not-"
"Ayaan? Zoya? What the hell is going on?!" a voice snapped them out of their argument, which had now brought them nose to nose with each other. They slowly turned towards the door and Zoya almost fell back in horror.
"M-Mr-Mr. K-Khan?" she stuttered, not at all expecting to see him back, this early. That was one of the reasons she'd called Ayaan over, to play video games and have fun. Phupi and Najma were out of town, visiting relatives and Zoya had nothing to do for most of the day, apart from a small visit to the passport office. And it was pointless to expect anything from Mr. Khan, as he'd barely paid attention to her, all morning. Then he'd left for work, not bothering to tell her when he'd be back or whether he would even have dinner or not.
Zoya had mentally sighed in frustration. Allah only knew what had prompted Mr. Khan to declare their 'engagement' so suddenly, in front of the immigration officer, the other day. Whatever it was, the same reason never showed its face again. Mr. Khan simply went back to being himself after that, blatantly ignoring her presence in the house and offering just a small nod of acknowledgement whenever he saw her, may it be during meals or anywhere else. His attitude drove Zoya mad. She wanted to confront him, but knew that it was pointless. All she was going to get for an answer, was an 'I don't know what you're talking about' or maybe a 'please leave me alone, Miss Farooqui'. So all she could do, was ignore him back.
And now here he was, standing in the middle of the hallway, looking as if he'd seen a ghost. Of course, seeing Ayaan here, in the middle of the day, lounging around so openly in his own house, was probably equivalent to seeing one, Zoya figured. She glanced at Ayaan from the corner of her eye and found him staring at the floor as if it were the most interesting thing in the world.
"I asked you something" Asad said, his voice low, and dangerous. He knew Ayaan and Zoya were friends, but he'd never epected to find him here, especially when Zoya was alone in the house. Those two had some serious explaining to do.
"Err… actually, bhaijaan, we were just playing random video games. Zoya was bored, so she called me. I was bored too, so I agreed to come over".
"Yes, Mr. Khan!" Zoya put in "I thought calling Ayaan over would be a good idea. We could just hang around and kill time together, playing video games".
Asad narrowed his eyes at them. "Is that so?" he asked. Both of them nodded furiously, together. "Then where is the video game?" he snapped. Two pairs of eyes flew towards the blank TV screen and then, back at him.
"It- wasn't working, Mr. Khan" Zoya replied, sheepishly. Before Asad could grill the further, the doorbell rang. "I'll get it!" she squealed, and fled the scene, glad to have a reason to get away from Jahapanah's penetrating glare. Asad watched her go and turned to his brother who looked as if he'd rather be anywhere else on the planet, than there, right now.
"When did you get here?" he asked him.
"About an hour ago, bhaijaan"
"You were just playing- or rather trying to play video games. I suppose?"
"Yes, bhaijaan"
"I hope you're not lying to me?"
"No, bhaijaan"
"Pizza's here!" Zoya called excitedly. Asad turned around to find her making her way towards the dining table, balancing two cans of coke on four boxes of pizzas. He began to lose his temper. Firstly, she was hanging out with Ayaan in his absence, and then walking around the house as if she didn't have a care in the world. He stormed towards her.
"Who ordered this?" he asked her as she rummaged through the units for plates and glasses.
"I did" she replied, without turning around to face him.
"Miss Farooqui. Look at me when I'm talking to you". No effect. She continued doing, whatever she was doing, pretending she hadn't heard him. "Miss. Farooqui." Asad almost growled out, his temper at its edge, ready to lash out at the slightest provocation. "Didn't you hear me?" He was about to make her face him, when Ayaan cleared his throat from behind them.
"Mona Da- I mean, Zoya, I guess I should get going. Ammi might be worried about me. I'll see you-"
"You're not going anywhere" Zoya said, spinning around to look at him warningly. "You're not a kid and it isn't even three in the afternoon. There is no reason for your Ammi to get worried. Plus, I'm not letting you waste the Pizza, okay? We ordered it together so we're gonna have it together." Ayaan looked at his brother, helplessly. He knew he was stepping into dangerous waters, here. The tension between Zoya and his brother, was thick enough to cut with a knife. But he couldn't just walk off. He made his way to the table and sat down, while Zoya brought the food. Asad simple stood there, glaring daggers at both of them.
"Would you like something to eat, Mr. Khan?" Zoya asked him, just before she sat down to eat.
"No, I'm fine" he replied curtly, and walked off, banging the door shut, as he entered his room. Ayaan amd Zoya visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
"What's up with you two?" Ayaan asked her "You looked ready to kill each other. Or maybe kiss each other senseless!" he said, and sniggered, while Zoya choked on her pizza.
"Allah miyaan, what's wrong with you?!" she cried, reaching across the table and smacking his arm. "How can you even say that? I'd rather kiss a cockroach than kiss him!"
"Well, there's definitely something going on between the two of you. Even a blind man could see it. Bhaijaan was jealous when he saw us, together. It was obvious".
"No, he wasn't jealous. He was angry because I invited you over without asking him and then actually managed to have a nice time without him, instead of just sitting around and getting bored".
"Isn't that called being jealous? Or do you Americans have another word for it?"
"Yes, we do! And its called being an ass!"
"Language, again, Mona Darling. Don't forget, we aren't alone" Ayaan said in an over-dramatic manner, followed by a loud 'shhh'. That made Zoya burst out laughing and soon they were both half falling from their chairs, clutching their stomachs, laughing away while their food and drinks lay forgotten.
"ENOUGH!" The two of them straightened up immediately, to find a murderous looking Asad standing behind them.
"Ayaan, get out" he said, pointing towards the main door.
"But, bhaijaan-"
"Not now, Ayaan. Just go. No arguments"
Ayaan turned to leave, when Zoya spoke up. "No, he's not leaving, Mr. Khan. Not until you tell me what your problem is". Asad looked at her incredulously. This girl had some serious nerve, jabbing at his ire, when he was already ready to kill someone.
"I don't need to explain myself to you"
"Oh, really? Then Rabart doesn't need to go, either"
"Can't you just listen to me, for once? What is your problem?"
"What is my problem? Allah miyaan! You have a problem if I stay, you have a problem if I leave. You have a problem if I spend time with my friends and you also have a problem if I stay alone. I can probably write a book on all the things you have a problem with! You are such an indecisive, person, Mr. Khan! One moment, you are so sweet and understanding and then you go back to being the obnoxious and uptight Jahapanah within a blink of an eye! You go around doing whatever you want and then you tell me you don't owe me an explanation?!"
"Listen, Miss Farooqui" Asad said, glancing nervously at Ayaan, who was now grinning at them, openly "I don't think we should be having this conversation in front of-"
"Why the hell not? He's your brother! He has the right to know just how big a jerk you are! You never told me why you wanted me to stay back! You never told me why you bothered to help me so much with my search for Abbu! You never told me why you announced our engagement to the immigration officer, so suddenly! And the worst part is you never told me why you went back to acting like you didn't care, at all!" she screamed at him, unable to stop her tears from flowing.
At that moment, she realized how much his indifference had hurt her. She had finally started accepting the fact that Mr. Khan genuinely cared for her, but he'd again withdrawn into his shell, leaving her alone and confused. She'd had enough of this. Zoya Farooqui needed answers and she was going to get them.
