Chapter 3
The look in her eyes was pure sin – he was going to hell for sure! But for now, he was in heaven… her tongue tentative at his mouth… then pushing, warring with his. God! He was so hard for her! This was Zoya, his Zoya?! He'd returned the kiss, and carried her away, scared he might take her right there.
She had too many clothes on; with a muttered oath he ripped her shirt open, scattering buttons everywhere. Lace! Somehow, he hadn't imagined her as a satin-and-lace girl. He tugged at the strap, and then licked the pink welt on her shoulder. She bit his shoulder in return. They fell back on the bed and he did what he'd wanted to all along… taste every inch of her - a nip at her breast, his tongue tracing a wet path down to her navel, going further south… finding her. She twisted against him; hands on her hips, he steadied her. She tasted sweet, and salty. He probed further, nipping her most sensitive spot. She cried out – God… As… he moved up and silenced her with a kiss, as he poised at her core…
Asad woke up with a jerk. He looked at his watch – 4:30 AM and sighed. No, not another dream! Every other night, Zoya haunted his dreams. He missed her. He should've never let her go in the first place! He had to find her and set things right.
***
"Push Zoe!" Humeira urged, as she held Zoya's hand. The matronly nurse nodded in agreement… "You're doing fine, honey."
Zoya was in the last stages of labor. "I'm so sleepy and tired, Humzie… I've never been up so…. Aaah! It hurts! Damn you Asad… ouch… Ahmed Khan! The last time I was up this late… up all night… was your fault!"
"Focus on your breathing, we can almost see his head," Zoya's doctor reassured her. "Push now. We are almost there."
Zoya inhaled a deep breath and as the contraction ended, breathed again. Tears rolled down her cheeks because it hurt so bad... But nothing was as painful as bringing Zayd into this world, without his father. Asad. The only man whom she'd trusted.
One last push and he was here. "Time of birth – 4:30 AM," said the doctor.
Zoya looked as they took him away. The minute she'd known she was having a boy, she had decided he'd be Zayd. In Arabic, the name meant growth... one who progresses and makes others progress. And he would help her do that.
When they brought him to her, she admired his eyes. They looked big on his face... but there was no mistaking them, they were Asad's. She ran her finger along his cheek "Zayd, my precious one... I'm sorry your daddy isn't here. I don't know if I did the right thing, but I promise you... I'll take good care of you."
***
The initial weeks had been crazy; sleepless nights, feeding routines, changing diapers... God! Zayd was so little but he'd changed her life irrevocably.
As she watched Zayd smile in sleep, Zoya teared up. "Be strong, girl!" She couldn't give in now. She had seen the vindictive side of Asad and maybe it was best he wasn't aware of Zayd.
Knowing how temperamental Asad could be, even if they had been together for Zayd's sake, she doubted it would have lasted. They'd have fought like crazy! She didn't want that for her baby boy. A dysfunctional home was no place for a child - she had firsthand experience of what that was like.
Zayd would be four months soon, and she'd have to get back to work. Much as she hated it, she had to leave him at a day care so that she could financially support them. She wiped her tears and got back to folding Zayd's onesies.
Humeira stood in the doorway, watching her friend grieve in private. Zoe was strong and stubborn, sometimes that worked against her. She walked away, deep in thought.
***
"Let's go na, Zoe. It will be fun!" Humeira said excitedly. Her friend had invited them to a book launch.
"But Zayd?" Zoya wasn't sure it was a good idea – there'd be a huge crowd.
"Silly! No – it's a small gathering, it'll be good for Zayd too!" Humeira cajoled.
They'd set out the next day. Zoya was really worried about Zayd crying. So she found a corner away from the gathering. He looked so peaceful, asleep in his stroller. She turned to a shelf which had some interesting titles. As she reached for a book, another hand closed over hers. "Here you go." That sexy, deep voice that could make her heart race! She jerked up to find Asad staring down at her.
The panic in her eyes was obvious, as was the shock in his. They jolted apart and the book fell down with a thud, which was accompanied by a wail!
"Zayd!" Zoya turned to comfort her little boy. He was so distraught, she figured it was best to hold him close to her and comfort him.
Asad stood there riveted by the sight of a little boy in Zoya's arms. His little chin rested on her shoulder, as she stroked his back and shushed him gently. Zayd she'd called him... wait! Who was this baby? Was this his son?
Zoya was too scared to turn around. She closed her eyes and hoped her worst nightmare would end! She'd never imagined she'd bump into Asad in less than a year of moving back to New York. This was the Big Apple for God's sake!
"Zo... he's so..." Asad was speechless. He extended his arm to touch the baby's hair... and moved closer, and inhaled the sweet smell of baby powder. And the spicy scent of Zoya. It was heady... he wished he could control his response.
Zayd looked at him and smiled an all-too familiar smile, though it was toothless. He leaned forward and kissed him.
"He's mine, isn't he Zo?" Asad asked softly, against her ear.
Zoya froze. Could she lie to him? Omission was one thing, but now she was faced with the prospect of telling an outright lie.
"Uh... why do you think that?" she enquired, careful not to let her emotions reflect in her voice.
"Zo... c'mon... be honest. Look at his eyes," Asad replied and turned her towards him. "Why are you denying it?"
He looked at her intently. She turned away. The tremor in her hands was a dead giveaway. Why had she hid this from him?!
He was hurting – it was like someone had kicked him in the gut. Zoya had deprived him of something so precious, a family... someone to call his own. He'd longed for it. For ages, it had just been Ayaan and him. And now, he was sure Zayd was his.
Zoya's mind was in a tizzy. She'd wanted revenge... she'd wanted Asad to suffer in agony... never know about Zayd. Yet, one look at Asad's face and she knew she couldn't be vindictive, at least not about his son. She'd thought she could do it, but she was wrong.
Her eyes were moist as she looked up at him. "I didn't want to have you to deal with me, and him, for the rest of your life," she choked as she said the words.
Asad was stunned. "God! Zo… I'm sorry. I'm so sorry… I should've… I didn't ever mean it." Ever since he'd uttered those cruel words, he'd regretted them. Right now, he just felt like smashing his hand through the window!
"It doesn't matter now. You and I are toxic and I didn't want that for Zayd. He deserves better. It's best we keep things this way," she spoke with such conviction Asad was taken aback.
"Zoya… I'm sorry – I've wanted to call you... You changed numbers and cut yourself off completely from everyone. You haven't responded to my emails. I've changed Zo… please, don't say that. Give us a chance," Asad begged, the strain in his voice, obvious.
"Y'know… there's so much happening at BigCat. Crysal Technologies…. Can you imagine they're interested in a takeover? BigCat is yours too and I wanted you to get your share," Asad realized he was blabbering but he had to tell her what was on his mind, tell her that he'd wanted to make amends, ask for forgiveness.
Zoya looked at him calmly. "I know, I work at Crysal and until six months ago, was on the team planning the takeover. And I'm going to be back soon after my break. So we'll be in touch during the negotiations."
So Asad knew about Zayd – that wasn't part of the plan. But it was out. However, there was no way she was going to let Asad into their life, and no way in hell that she'd let him know that the terms of the takeover would be hostile. She still felt like Asad needed to know what it felt like to have the rug pulled out from under his feet.
Asad stared at the woman standing in front of him, with his baby in her hand. She was the mother of his son. Bad enough she hadn't told him about the baby – given how he'd behaved, maybe he deserved that. But he'd be damned if he didn't give this a fighting chance!
He was beginning to realize the depth of his feelings for Zoya, the unfairness with which he'd treated her was despicable. In the past year, he'd realized how self centred and insensitive he had been. He was going to turn this around... within the next year, Zoya would be his, again.
