Chapter 16
'Allah miyan! What's wrong with Appi and Jeeju? They can't take me back to New York. I like it here. How can they decide this!!'
'Calm down Zoya. I'm sure we can get out of this.'
'Oh shut up! Just say that you're glad I have to go' she snapped rowdily.
'BAS!' Asad said sternly, with a tinge of hurt.
'How could you say that?' he accused.
They were in Asad's room and Zoya had been pacing up and down and ranting to Asad, who had no choice but to remain mum. Now she crossed the limit.
Zoya turned to look at him and realized that what she said had hurt him.
'Sorry, Asad. I just' How could they do this? We have to convince them. I can't go back to New York.'
'Zoya, aap jante hai ki you are always welcome here, and don't take me wrong but don't you miss your aapi and jeeju? I mean maybe they miss you a lot that's why they want to take you back'
'If that was the case then I wouldn't have reacted this way. I would have spoken to them calmly and maybe if I had to, I would have gone with them for a short time but still come back here. Asad, didn't you hear what they were saying? They want to get me married! What the hell!'
'So what?'
'SO WHAT? Appka dimag karab hogi kya? I don't want to get married! At least not to any random person! Remember last time?'
'Lekin solution bahut simple hai!'
'Sach? Main kya karoon?'
'RUN AWAY!' Asad said, as if it were the most obvious thing, laughing his guts away.
Zoya squinted her eyes, ready to lash out at him for joking around in such a serious time but then her eyes widened and she smirked.
'Actually, that doesn't sound too bad' she said and Asad gave her a horrified look.
He sighed exasperatedly, ' Zoyaaa I was joking! Aap bhi na!'
'Toh phir bataiye ki main kya karoon!!!!'
'Acha shant ho jaye, we'll figure something out'
'I hope so. Asad you have to help me! Please'
'Haan. Now, it's very late so we should get some rest. Don't worry.
Zoya sighed. 'Ji. Good night.'
'Goodnight.'
'Ya allah! What do you two think? Will this work?' Dilshad asked concerned.
'Haan, kyun nahi?'
'I don't know. I just hope it does. You know na, how Asad can be.'
'Don't worry Dilshad B, this plan will definitely work. Maybe they haven't realized it but that doesn't mean that they would let themselves be away from each other' Zeenat reassured.
'Hann, Zeenat is right. It's a good thing we released they were already listening to us, and said all we wanted them to hear.'
'Ji, I'm sure they both are going crazy right now.'Anwar chimed in.
'Haan, aap jante hain, when you told me that they have something going on and maybe this is love,I was so surprised but I remember seeing his care and the way Zoya spoke about him. I will be so happy to have a son in law like him. In fact, I just can't wait till they try to stop us from "taking Zoya back to New York and getting her married to someone else"' Zeenat laughed heartily .
All three laughed and were quite proud of their plan to get Zoya and Asad's love story going.
'But one thing is sure, if we left it completely to them, they would never take the first step.'
'Kaafi der ho chuki, we should get some rest. Now we can sleep in peace. Let's see what happens tomorrow!'
'Haan, goodnight'

Asad's heart was pacing quickly as he rolled over in his bed. What was really going on? Suddenly, when things seemed to settle down, now Zoya had to leave? No, he wouldn't let this happen, especially not to let her marry someone else!' Ya allah what should I do! Tomorrow Zoya and I will do some planning. I can't sleep in peace.
But why is this bothering me so much? He questioned himself, and shrugged. Whatever, I'm just trying to help my friend. He smirked and shook his head.
A loud knock broke his train of thoughts, and he rolled his eyes, knowing who would be at his door.
He sat up in bed and didn't bother to hurry up to get the door, as he very well knew Zoya would, as boldface as she usually does, open the door herself. And so she did.
'Allah miyan! How can you sleep when I'm in such a big crisis!?'
'Zoya, do I look like I'm sleeping? I too am very worried' He bit his tongue as he said those words.
'I mean, I was thinking of how to get you out of this.' He added subtly.
'Mmm well you better think harder. Or else in a few days times I'll be out of here and in wedding attire!'
'I'm trying. You too, use your brain for once!'
'All I need is a good reason to stay back in India! How hard can it be?'
'Woh toh hai, lekin shaadi? They want to get you married, how will you get around that?'
She rolled her eyes drastically, 'If I had known I wouldn't be here Mr Clueless Ahmed Khan' she said with utter sarcasm.
'Ms Dramebaaz, you should appreciate that I'm going crazy trying to help you after 12:00 am!'
'Sorry, and thank you Asad' she said sheepishly.
'Okay so, " I want to stay back in India because I'll miss you guys too much, Phupi is like my Ammi, I can't leave my family etc etc", shouldn't that work? Oh and I want to get married in India too.'
'Mmm still not convincing, especially the shaadi part'
'Arrey haan " I already like someone in India, iss liye I can't marry someone else" Yes that sounds good'
'That makes no sense, you want to stay because you don't want to part from our family, yet you're planning to get married, which means you will be going away from the family! Your reason to stay and not get married must work together' He gave her a confused look and wrinkled his forehead.
Zoya sighed out of frustration. 'Allah miyan, why can't you agree on any of my ideas? At least I'm coming up with ideas! You're the one standing like a statue and criticizing my plans. Hmph, "makes no sense because I'll be going away from the family?" ya Allah, what else can I come up with! It's not like I can say I'm getting married to you!'
Zoya swore her eyes would fall out as it dawned upon her what she had said. Asad looked up at her and felt his face getting hot. She looked to the ground, blushing and tried to speak.
'Main' matlab vo nahi tha. I didn't mean that ' I was just...' She stammered.
Asad's initial reaction was astonishment turned to embarrassment turned to contentment. But after actually thinking about what she had said, he realized that was probably the best excuse they could get.
'Actually Zoya, that's not a bad idea' he said slowly, testing out her reaction word by word.
She blinked her eyes, her mouth wide open.
'You can close your mouth now.'
She pouted. 'What's wrong with you? What are you saying? I just said it out of.. I mean.. I wasn't serious'
'Think. This makes for the perfect way to get around staying with our family, as well as not being forced to marry now'
'True' Zoya said shaking her head in agreement.
'Lekin , if they really get us married toh?' she added, curious to hear his response.
'Toh kya ?' he said immediately and then blushed. She felt her stomach get ticklish and her heart beats became more frequent.
'I mean, we'll think about that later. For now we needed an idea to quickly plan how to stop you from leaving, which we have found.'
'That's true. But how are we going do this?'
'Simple, we talk all the time, stick together you know, act like teens who can't stay away from each other and hopefully they will figure it out, if not we tell them'
'So basically do what we normally do?' she asked.
'Haan, bilkul!' he answered.
They realized what they had just said and looked at each other keenly. Was that the way they really were? Always talking, always together? But in the beginning they had always fought. Zoya blinked, getting momentarily lost in the fact that they had come so far. So far that even if they had to bicker, it would be less hostile, and even after 12:00am her "Mr Khan" had her in his room, trying to figure out a way to help her. She smiled to herself.
'Ahem' Asad interrupted her.
'Haan, you are right. Anyways it's late we should go to bed' Zoya said quickly.
'Mmm. Tomorrow we'll meet to further plan okay? For now let's sleep. Don't worry. Everything will be fine' he reassured her, looking deep into her eyes and placing his hand on her shoulder.
'Theek hai. Thanks a lot Asad. I know I've told you this many times before, but I don't know what I would do if you weren't here for me. Like seriously.' She said meaningfully, touching his hand which was on her arm.
On a lighter note she continued, ' Issi baat pe, ek sher arz hai,
"jab life ho jate hain problem, udaas mat karo,
jab life ho jate hain problem, udaas mat karo
To fix the problem, sirf Jahanpanah Six Packs ko keh do"
Shukriya, shukriya, shukriya' she said with a smile as wide as the ocean.
He shook his head and allowed himself a slight laugh.
'You will never change, "Ms Faruqui!' he said shaking his head again and smiling. He took their hands off her shoulder and continue holding hers in his.
She pouted, and replied ' But I can't say the same for you' she found herself saying this and becoming serious, as she got lost into his eyes again.
'Hmm is that a good thing or a bad thing?' he asked, genuinely wanting to know.
She smiled. 'Good. In fact, the way you are now, you couldn't have been any better'
Asad knew she was right. He faked anger however and said, ' So what are you trying to say, before I was horrible?'
'Nahi, lekin aap bahut akdu the, maybe you still are a bit, but you have changed. Now I can't say "Aap ki dil mein sena nahi, pathar hai"' she said laughing, and he too joined her.
'Waise bhi, the credit goes to you! Now I have to use your line. If it weren't for you, I don't know what would have happened to me.'
'Of course! Is there anything I can't do?' she asked righteously.
Usually he would get irritated with her this line, but now he really wondered if there was anything she couldn't. After all, she made someone like him learn to laugh and live again and not wallow in the difficult times.
' We have yet to see' he said, not sure exactly what he was implying.
'Goodnight Asad' she beamed at him.
'Goodnight Zoya'
Zoya remained standing there, and Asad looked at her confused. 'Aren't you going to sleep?'
'Asad, how can I go if you don't let go of my hand!'
He looked and saw that he was still holding here hand and he became flushed.
'Woh actually'.' He said as he let go.
'Oh ho! 'woh actually' do you say anything else!? Anyways, goodnight, see you in the morning'
'Haan, goodnight' he replied hastily to avoid any other mention of him holding onto her hand.
