Chapter 2.
"Tears are words the mouth can't say nor can the heart bare."
Joshua Wisenbaker
"Piya Jaiswal you had better pick up your phone" Misha had grumbled dialing her best friend's number. It was relief to her that Piya Jaiswal even existed. What if her parents had decided they had never wanted children, Misha would wonder sometimes, what would she have done then?
Her thoughts were interrupted by Piya's soft "Hello!". Misha had screamed in jubilation "Piya Piya Piya!!!! Thank God you're still alive" she had chirped. Life without Piya would definitely have been a bore. "Mish if this is the breaking news of the day then I have to go" Piya's voice was now irritated.
"Hold your horses Jaiswal, I'm coming over to pick you up in twenty. You had better be ready" and with that threat the phone had been cut. Piya had smiled then. Twenty minutes meant twenty minutes she knew the hurricane named Misha would be gracing her abode soon and had rushed to get ready.
"Mamaji Misha will be coming to pick me up" she had informed Praveen Jaiswal as he sat reading his files. Praveen had looked up at her sternly; his eyes had narrowed as he scrutinized her dress. "And you will be with her the whole time?" he had questioned his tone scathing. "Y-y- yes Mamaji, I will be with her... you can ask her when she comes" Piya had stuttered clutching her books to her chest. It was the same each time, she would inform him of Misha coming over and he would charge her like a prisoner awaiting trial. "Of course I will" he had replied curtly and had gestured for her to go away. A thin sheen of water had filmed her eyes but she had blinked it away, she wondered why she felt hurt every time. Wasn't this the norm the mistrust, the accusing stares, the mute reprimand? And each time she had willed herself to be stronger, to be indifferent to not care, yet she always failed.
Later that afternoon as they sat munching on pizza Piya had tried to concentrate on her history paper that was due that week. She was finding it increasingly difficult to focus while her best friend played footsie with her boyfriend under the table. Slamming her book shut she had picked up her half eaten slice and walked out to the Dobriyal's expansive lawns. How will Misha even pass her exams at this rate she had rued walking over the grass. True she had her own little spot of garden at home, correction her Mamaji's home but it was nothing compared to the manicured lawns of the Dobriyal estate.
Piya loved nature in any form; she had always believed that the only good outcome of her life in Dehradoon had been her closeness to nature that the metros would never have been able to provide her. Of course there was also Misha her savior the only being in this whole wide world who did not judge her but then that statement would hold true only if her reality would have been known. No, Praveen Jaiswal had taken every care in the world that his reputation remain untarnished and Piya had borne it all in silence. What else could she have done she sometimes speculated, what could an eight year old abandoned by her parents have done?
She had heard a car halt and had peered around the shrubs to see Panchi walk down the cobbled path. Piya had run up to her "Panchi! So nice to meet you" she had squealed. Panchi Raichand was Misha's elder sister daughter of Madhu and Arnab Dobriyal. Piya had always regretted not being able to attend Pachi's lavish wedding to Siddhant Raichand, it had been the talk of the town and despite Misha's best efforts Praveen had not given her permission to go. Misha though was adamant on kidnapping Piya for her own wedding. "That sadu Mamaji of yours won't be able to find you I swear" she had fumed once when Praveen had denied her visitation rights but that was when Misha had wanted to gate crash Tanushri's birthday party, an event Piya had no interest in attending anyways.
"Piya so nice to see you here" Panchi had gushed hugging her warmly. "Is Misha coochie cooing with Kabir again?" she had inquired and the look on Piya's face had said it all. "If she fails this year Mom is going to kill her" she had informed a laughing Piya. Motherhood agreed with Panchi, she had a glow on her face that made her look ethereal. Sometimes Piya wished she had been a part of the Dobriyal family. She could have had everything she had ever wanted parents, sisters, the love of a family. Shaking her head to push her errant thoughts away she had followed Panchi inside the house.
"Misha you idiot!" Panchi had yelled when she entered her room. Misha had probably decided to raid Panchi's wardrobe in her absence. "Birdie when did you come?" Misha had embraced her elder sister lovingly, "Misha you better put all this back right now" Panchi had warned her making her way through the pool of fabric on the floor while Kabir and Piya had found it hard to control their laughter. "What does it matter Kaddu, you can't fit in them anyways. Look at your size now, two of me could fit in your clothes" she had complained while Panchi had thrown the bed pillows straight in her face. "Just let Mom come!" Panchi had threatened her little sister "Panchi I'll keep it all back don't worry" Piya had offered ever the peace maker between the two while Misha had flung herself on the bed in desperation.
"It's the college Prom Panchi, I need to look presentable" she had explained her actions. "Ask this stingy boyfriend of yours to buy you something new" Panchi had supplied making herself comfortable. She had just returned from her weekly checkup and had had her husband drop her here. "Who you calling stingy Panch" Kabir had cried while Piya had started picking up the clothes from the floor and stacking them in the cupboard. The afternoon had passed pleasantly with the four of them bantering happily, these were the moments Piya craved while sitting in her bedroom at her Mamaji's residence. She wished time would stop and she would never have to return to her Mamaji's prison again.
