Chapter 5

"Sometimes good things fall apart, so better things can fall together."

-Jessica Howell

Piya had been sitting in the plush lobby chair for the past twenty minutes and each passing minute had increased her dread. She could feel her nervous energy getting the better of her; she looked around to see the other applicants in a similar state of mind and clenched her folder all the more tightly. She could not believe that she, Piya Jaiswal was one of the top five contestants that had cleared the entry exam to Raichand Internships for the Youth and was now sitting in one of the most decadent offices in Dehradoon. A batch of five hundred had applied and only five had been chosen the thought alone gave her goosebumps, a cold gust of wind had nipped her bare arms suddenly bringing her back to reality.

The doors had opened then to reveal two distinguished men, tall and clad in all black. "The Raichands!" someone had whispered conspiratorially and Piya's head had whipped in their direction. The elder Raichand was definitely the no nonsense man, he had an aristocratic air to him, his stride was purposeful and calculated. His ebony hair was slick and fringed at the sides with gray; he wore an expensive Black Italian Wool suit complete with a silk scarf, his face rather striking with a thick mustache. The younger Raichand was the pole opposite his handsome face was devoid of any facial hair, he had soft brown eyes and a prominent nose. Piya could make out his lean and muscular body beneath his Ralph Lauren jacket. He had a crop of wavy black hair styled to perfection and as his eyes had roved over the people assembled in the lobby his face had broken in a brilliant smile. Piya could not help but smile back at him, her nerves had calmed considerably, if this was the dynamic duo due to interview her there was still some hope.

Chand Raichand had studied her file in detail while Piya had gone back to her restless mode, she was seated opposite the two most powerful beings in her city and she was positive of having a seizure at any given moment. Siddharth could not help but smile he could feel her anxiety as it sprang off of her; he could not blame her, of the last four contestants only two had been able to make a mark on them. "So you currently hold a scholarship and aspire to finish your MBA in finance," Chand had finally lifted his eyes to her and Piya had nodded eagerly. "Yes Sir. I want to work at Raichand Group of companies because it is the best in this city" she had explained excitedly, it was clear to both the men that this was definitely her first ever interview.

"And why should we give you this position?" Siddharth had asked her genuinely interested. "Sir because I can contribute in so many ways. I can help with Marketing, it has been an interest of mine and the current economy has such a huge potential for investments specifically in the I.T industry." Siddharth could see she had a lot of untapped talent. "But ours is a Real Estate Empire Ms. Jaiswal" Chand had informed her. "I know sir that is why we need to be socially adept, today Real Estate is a global venture. Not only do we cater to our countrymen in general we are also serving people who consider our country a profitable venture and need homes and properties here." Chand had smiled at her enthusiasm "And you think you can help us reach to a global level Ms. Jaiswal?" Chand had inquired, "Of course Sir!" Piya had replied grinning. "Well before you conquer the world Ms. Jaiswal you need to learn some things too... Don't you?" Siddharth had joked and Piya had agreed her face beaming with happiness. As she shook hands with them Piya had been engulfed in awe of her luck she couldn't believe that she had landed the coveted internship.

The next few days had been a whirlwind for Piya, she had applied for the internship without the consent of her uncle who had been livid for not being informed. "How much will they pay you?" he had inquired while Piya had tried to explain that even though an internship did not guarantee a good pay she would be getting valuable experience which would be of great use to her. On hearing this Praveen had gone berserk he had believed that Piya had bagged a good paying job and would start repaying him for the time and money he had invested in her education. Moreover the fact that she would have an excuse to remain out of his sight was not sitting well with him and Piya had wondered for the millionth time why was that a problem. It wasn't that her uncle was a narrow minded person, her aunt, his wife, worked in a call center and would often return home at wee hours of the night, he had never objected to that. Pooja was allowed to attend parties, trips and sleepovers with her friends it was only Piya who had been imprisoned like Rapunzel in her tower.

But Piya had had enough of her uncle's nonsensical restrictions, if she had been involved in sinister activities she would never have found objection to this imprisonment moreover she had always been a straight A student. She had never participated in extracurricular activity out of her uncle's fear and had been teased at school and now college for this trait. People considered her a wall flower and a nerd who had no courage to speak to the opposite gender. Not that Piya had any interest in the teenagers at her college, in her opinion they were just distractions and she needed to focus on her education then career to attain her freedom from her uncle's jailhouse.

Abhay had closed his car door with a resounding thud, he had been extremely late from his meeting and as he had expected it had been a mess. He hated it when things went awry despite his best efforts the details of his investor's last meeting had been unavailable to him which had left them miffed. His mind had been racing a mile a minute; the fact that both his father and brother were unavailable at that crucial point had not gone unnoticed by the investors as well. "Damn it!" he had fumed kicking the tire of his Mercedes E-Class Sedan, he was in no mood to go home. He couldn't believe Siddharth had ruined his meeting with the investors just because he wanted to play cupid, what did he think he would achieve hiring those blasted women who knew nothing about this line of work. His Testoni shoes crunched the dead leaves underfoot, he'd ruin them he knew it but did he care. He was livid at the thought that all the hard work he had put in this deal was going to be water under the bridge just because he couldn't get the quotations for the land, this was a kindergarten mistake something he, Abhay Raichand did not do. As it was people had stopped taking him seriously after the accident, they still believed he wanted time to recuperate, Mr Tandon may not have said it but his pitying gaze and sympathetic pat on Abhay's back before his departure spoke volumes.

He did not have a destination in mind but pretty soon he found himself standing at the edge of the mysterious lake in the forest. There was some enigma that drew him there, finding a flat rock he had sit on it trying to make sense of his life. Two years he had spent as an automaton trying to forget everything yet it haunted him the moment he closed his eyes. His life was like a spool of thread that had been unwound and now lay tangled and despite his best efforts he could not untangle it. His head in his hands he massaged his scalp viciously, was there any respite? He would have gone on in this vein had he not heard suppressed sobs coming from a distance. His grey eyes had scoured the premises and located the same damsel from the other night crying in despair. Well, at least he wasn't the only one with inexplicable problems in his life. Her fall and consequent run the other day had left him cautious and he did not wish to frighten her again, yet he was curious of her presence in the middle of the jungle at this hour. Did she come here regularly? Was this her haunt? Was she even human?

Taking care not to draw attention to him he had walked over to where she sat, as he approached her he could see she had dense curly hair that blew daintily in the breeze. A full moon had graced the sky illuminating everything; he noticed she had her back to him. Her attire looked middle class a long patterned skirt coupled with a long sleeved shirt laundered a million times going by their state, her head on her crossed arms her knees drawn in she cried softly. "Excuse me", Abhay had said and noticed her stiffen immediately "Please don't run away again, I do not wish you to hurt yourself again at my account. I...I just" his voice had faltered as he gazed on the glassy lake. He had sighed then "I really like this place, it helps me regain my sanity. I don't wish you any harm; I just want to be able to be here without you running off like a rabbit every time I show up".

Piya had bunched her skirt fabric in fright, she had never encountered any living creature here at this time of night and had been scared to hear a man's voice that too so near her. Part of her had wanted to confront the stranger for barging in on her privacy but then again she did not own the jungle or the lake. A few moments later she had heard the leaves crunch and the sound of his fading footsteps as he retreated to his rock. She had turned her head to see him leave, her silence had been taken as affirmation by him not that it troubled her as long as he didn't bother her. She may have been angry at him earlier but something in his voice had let her know that he meant what he had said. And, she had thought what if he was as broken as her, needed a sanctuary as bad as she did? What good would it do to deprive him of his sanity as he had claimed it? That night Piya Jaiswal had officially shared her lake with the unknown soft spoken stranger.
