The Heart of the Night.
ByAbhIyalicious aka Koyel
In the little gaps between the sun kissed hills, stood a narrow tower. Black , gritty and powerful. The beast like tower looked like the staunch limbs of a thorn, piercing against the sky. The stone cold walls held their breath when their master passed by. The rock solid floors always cracked slightly under the sound of his footsteps. The thick, black curtains whined at the sound of his voice. The cream coloured pillars always made a creaking noise as they felt him passing by. His eyes were a menacing personality. Blood would turn into ice by the rise of his right brow, as he would curl his masculine mouth into a sneer. His smile would be a historic event. His house was scared of him. Everybody was. The dawn would slowly fade in its bronze hue, smearing into the night. The night as dark as his moods.Every night, the unfriendly maroon sheets of his bed would stare at him. Candles would melt. Flames would burn. The flames waited for the first few rays of the sun to take them away from his gaze. He walked slowly towards the old cupboard. He opened it, with a string of colourful hangers greeting him. The colourful hangers echoed the screams of his daughter. Her voice still haunts him. He takes a few steps back , as his feet step on the pieces of a scotch bottle. The alcohol leering in them. The glass pieces of liquor reflected his wife's broken face. Blood was streaming onto the floor. Red ripe blood. He stumbled onto the floor. A shadow of little girl appeared , walking in small, unheard foot steps . Her big , brown eyes were moving towards him . She whispered near him , "Why are you so heartless , daddy? " His strangled voice said , "Because my heart doesn't love me. "
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her big , brown eyes squinted at the narrow streams of sunlight , reflecting from her windows. She was in a house without any hangers or belts. Cabinets were used with shelves instead to keep her clothes on. Her mom was sitting in front of her, waiting for her to wake up. She was smiling. Suddenly, all the rays of light seemed to arrive from the curve of her mouth. Her mother's heart reflected on her face. Her scars were almost invisible. "Get ready for school" , she said. The girl was not little anymore , her mother realized, as her daughter trodded towards the bathroom. The splashed water stung her old scars as she looked at herself in the mirror. Bare . Stripped . Naked . Preparing to hide under layers . Layers of pretence. Layers of baggy clothes . Layers of make up . She realized that at the end of the day , all we rely on are our masks. Masks that betray us in the morning . Leaving us with the unwillingness to face ourselves . Promising to find us in the day .Her big brown orbs stared back at her scars , as a faint image appeared beside her reflection. She was a small , smiling girl. Her face was free , innocent , deranged , with frizzy hair. It took her back to a good deal of three years. Took her back to a world of whips. "I don't want to eat , Daddy. " Whip . "I want to watch the television , Daddy. " Whip . "I was too busy writing, Daddy. I forgot. " Whip . " I'm sorry I didn't do my homework , Daddy. " Whip . "Why should I keep quiet when I didn't do anything wrong , Daddy?" Whip. Whip . Whip . The little girl would walk slowly towards her mother's room. She would hear sobs. She would open the door and find her mother dabbing her face ferociously with a puff. The bathroom door was open. Her tears were nowhere to be seen. Her mother would carry her in her arms and take her to the living room. A little while after that , the little girl went back to the same bathroom. The compact was lying lazily on the sink. She took off her clothes. She placed the compact on her tiny, little palms as she stared at herself in the bathroom mirror . She began dabbing as furiously as her mom did at the ugly scar on her abdomen. Half of the powder was gone in that. She put on her clothes and went slowly back to her room as she heard her mother asking her dad to go to sleep. He pushed her off. There were big bottles of brandy on the dinner table. " No , bitch ." , he said. She tugged his arm , trying to stabilize him. The next moment , the little girl heard her mom scream. She peeked out of her room. There was blood on the floor . "Go back to your f**king family.f**k off " , daddy said . Her mother stood back up , wiping the blood off her face . She took him slowly to his room. The little girl heard the sound of hits along the way. She went towards her daddy's room. He was pushing her off his bed , while she was singing him a lullaby to put him asleep. "Twinkle twinkle little star" . Push . "How I wonder what you are. " Push . "Up above the world so high." Shove . "Like a diamond in the sky." Her daddy's hands stopped. He fell asleep. The little girl didn't sleep that night.
"Piya! You are late for school , honey! What are you doing? "
She came back to reality, slowly and carefully hiding beneath her layers before she went out walking with the world.
