Chapter 3
Pia's POV
'Life has always been cruel to me', is a common complaint of many. But for me it is different. No matter whatever storm comes, I always look forward to the rainbow at the end. Because it makes me happier.
Ever since my mom died, I've received a variety of emotions-from pity and sympathy to disgust and inferiority, but never love, and forget romantic love, not even motherly love or friendly love. I spent many years trying to carve out a place for myself in people's hearts before I realized that mutilated hearts are the worst kind-the best are the pure ones, the ones that don't require you to make a space for yourself, because the special spot for you is already reserved.
And whenever I feel sad I remind myself that my mom is watching me from above, and just like any normal teenager might feel embarrassed on being caught crying by their parents, so would I. At least, that's what I think. In the school I used to go to before I got a scholarship into this prestigious college, I used to have a friend called Tanushree who always used to believe that your parents should never catch you crying, let alone a classmate or a friend. But then, she changed. She became one of 'them' the 'in' crowd.
I would never fit 'in' anywhere.
I walked up to the gates of the college, hoping that just like the movies, someone would come and offer to show me around and perhaps I might just find a place for myself here. No such luck. Everyone was busy in their own world.
And just then I saw that snazzy black Jaguar, as if it was waiting for me the whole life. The boy inside it-of my age-with sparkling bluish-gray eyes-or perhaps it was the sunlight that was making me feel that way. And the way he was staring at me, as if someone had taken an iron rod and banged it on his head.
It sounds funny, but can be a bit startling if it actually happens.
'Um, where can I find the Principal's office?' I asked.
He suddenly snapped out of his trance and said, 'I'm Abhay..Abhay Raichand..your guide, errm, unoffically.'
That was the last time I would hear him saying anything in a daze, apparently. Because soon he composed himself and was giving me a cool look, and by that I mean not a 'hip' look but a literally icy one.
'Oh okay,' I said, biting my lip. Jeez, the first person I had to meet was the Ice King of College.
I got into the car and he smoothly drove it into the college, and I could see everyone staring at us. A few boys made catcalls and said, 'Hey Abhay, new girlfriend huh?' 'Yeah what if T comes to know about this?'
Oh great, he probably had a you-know-what of a girlfriend and she wouldn't be too happy to see us together. I felt like someone had plopped me into some clichd high school drama.
Soon he pulled over in front of what happened to be the adminstrative building.
'Thanks,' I said with a smile. And then he smiled back, a chilling grin that sent shivers down my spine. He then went back to looking serious, though his eyes were surprised, as if even he was not expecting that he would smile back at me.
And something told me this boy didn't smile very often.
