Chapter 2

Aarti had practically moved in with him after that night. Most of her belongings were at the apartment but she wanted to keep up appearances that she still lived at the dorm as well. And her family still sent her parcels there, so she went there to check every day.

They were living their dream. Young and in love. Yash worked so hard at this course. He wanted to do well so his parents would not have any reasons to doubt his abilities. He was keen on going back home to start working. The daunting part was that he was expected to take over the running of the business from his father once he retires. That was still a long way away but still, his forefathers had built a successful business, he did not want to be the cause of it failing. He had an older brother, but Pankaj had opted to go into the legal profession. He did not want to run an events company and he was fine with Yash taking over instead of him.

When he left for the USA it was in full support of his father. He believed that an international education would stand him in good stead. The only reason his mother was ok with it, was because he would be staying with her long-time friend Shoba Dubey and her family.

They were in the fortunate position that Yash could travel home often. He went home for each school holiday and semester breaks when he was at university. The Dubey's treated him like family so he didn't miss home too much and Prashant was like a brother to him. Shoba ma was not too happy that he moved out when he went to university, but he wanted to be on his own. He had wanted to be independent and also spread his wings a little. Living with the Dubey's was like still living in India and he had gotten a taste of freedom and he wanted to indulge as long it was possible. He convinced his parents that it was a good idea for him to live on his own that he would have peace and quiet as Prashant was the eldest of 4 children and his younger siblings could sometimes be a distraction where it came to studies. He wasn't sure that his father believed that since her knew how much he loved them but he gathered that his father was fine with him sowing his wild oats while he was still young and out of the country.

His father's estate agent found this luxury apartment for him and he had domestic cleaning the apartment twice a week. The idea was for Prashant to move in with him, but Shoba ma refused. They often made fun of how she believed these American girls would steal her son's virtue. Had she only known? Prashant stayed over often. They both got into Yale after school as planned but Prashant, after doing his honours with great difficulty and much help form Yash, decided to go work after that. He had no reason to study further. He was the heir to Dubey Electrical which was now an international brand. Yet they remained close and still had the same circle of friends. Yash was the only one of their group that was still studying and he had made other friends from his MBA study group. He had no choice as they spent so much time together studying and working on projects.

And of course his favourite person these days was his lady love. She considered him her answered prayer, but she didn't know that she was his too. He started this year a little apprehensive. He knew this course was extremely complex and that he had to work extremely hard at it. He knew of many people that that had dropped out of this course. He was worried that he would not make it. His parents had always been so proud of him and had never let them down.

That day, he had been standing there contemplating this New Year. He was wondering if this was worth his while. If he should not just cancel the course and go home and start to work. He didn't need this. His job was secure. Maybe he was ready to go home. He was so confused. And he told no one that not even Prashant. His outward appearance was that of a confident and secure person but inwardly he was too aware of his responsibilities and the expectations awaiting him.

Then he felt the tap on his shoulder. When he turned around he saw a flawless beauty. The fact she was distraught did not detract from her beauty at all. She asked for his help in perfect English but that accent could not be mistaken. It sounded like home to him. And when he responded to her in Hindi, and she hugged him, it felt like home. Her relief, her gratitude and also her need of him was a defining moment. All of a sudden it was clear, he knew he was meant to stay. For both of them.

He took her under his wing. Showed her around and made sure she was safe and not taken advantage of. She was so innocent and not familiar with the ways of the world at all. He found himself wanting to spend all his time with her. But he didn't want to scare her off and he himself was unsure of what he was feeling for her, so he had continued doing things his normal way. Going out with friends and dating. But he had no interest in these girls anymore and he liked coming home when she was there.

That first day she came home to cook for him was such a treat. He took her shopping and she was so excited to be in the shop to buy the groceries. She was clearly missing home. She wanted to pay, but he knew her funds were limited and he insisted to pay. She was so proud. He admired her so much. She was alone in a strange country, on her own and she was so determined to succeed.

Her cooking style was uniquely entertaining. He found the music she wanted and she started cooking. He might as well have been invisible as she was cooking, dancing and singing. He never knew that watching someone cook could be this entertaining. He sat there like an idiot with a silly grin on his face. His feelings ranged from a warm mushy feeling to a shards of desire as her hips moved provocatively as she was dancing. It was clear that she had no inkling about the amount of sex appeal she oozed. This was another reason he felt that he had to take care of her. When he was with her on campus, he could see the looks she generated from guys, yet she was completely oblivious to it. And he was not going to be the one to take advantage of her either.

He liked it when she was at his apartment. They could sit together for hours, each with their respective work. He felt at peace and got so much more done then. She was interesting to talk to. He loved listening to her and he loved her laughter. She made him happy and he wanted to remain her saviour.

He had suggested that she stay with him. He had meant nothing untoward. He meant what he said. It wasn't safe for her walk around late at night between his apartment and campus. And he wanted to make sure that she was always safe and cared for and he could do that so much better if she was with him, in his home. He had not intended for what happened that night after they sat working at his apartment. He was so tired. He had a big project due. It was a group project and he was working on his section. They had been sitting for hours and he could not manage another moment and he was not in the mood to drive anywhere. But she brought out the crazy in him. Even his family and Prashant would be shocked to see how he behaved with her. And he loved her response to his mad behaviour. And when she fell into his arms he could not resist. All his feelings and his desire for her overtook him. And her response was beautiful. The kiss was everything he could have imagined. Those luscious lips delivered on their promise.

Now he was even happier. She loved him as much as he loved her. He cherished each and every moment with her. She was a breath of fresh air. She was so open to him. She loved him unashamedly. But it was a pure love. They had even been sharing a bed since she had moved in but he made sure that things never got out of hand. She never made demands on him. Sometimes he was out till late at night with his study group as some of them worked full time and could only get together after hours. She waited for him patiently. When she was done with her work, she would settle on the couch till he came home. Most times he would have to carry her to bed as she was sleeping.

Their relationship was not known to any of their friends. Well mostly his friends. He still went out with them. She rarely wanted to go. She didn't feel like she fit in with that crowd. He didn't force her, so he went out alone most times but he never stayed out as late as he did previously. Besides Prashant had gone to India for a few months and he did not want to have that conversation with him over the phone. He was aware that Prashant had feelings for her too. Not that this was the first time that they liked the same girl. Only this time, he could not step aside. His feelings ran too deep and she loved him too. It was his intention to discuss it with Prashant when he got back to the USA, but he didn't have a chance.

They were sitting on the couch, Aarti was sitting with her back to the arm of the couch with her feet on couch and he was sitting in front of her, between her legs. She had her arms around his neck. They were joking and kissing when the door suddenly opened.

"Scindiya!" Prashant shouted his normal greeting as he came in.

Then he froze as he saw the two in such an intimate position.

"I'm sorry. I should have knocked." He walked back out.

"Yash" said Aarti concerned.

"Don't worry. I will talk to him."

Yash ran out the door after Prashant. He got to him just as he reached his car.

"Prashant, wait."

Prashant looked at him.

"I was going to tell you. I wanted to tell you when you got home."

Prashant looked at him angrily.

"Are you out of your mind? How can you be doing this?"

"I love her Prashant. And she loves me."

"Yash, this can't possibly work. Do you think that your family will accept her with open arms?"

"It will be difficult but ..."

"But nothing, Yash. It will not be difficult, it will be impossible. And you know that. She is not Scindiya bahu material and she is not what they picked out for you. They will never accept her and then what will you do."

"I will make them accept her."

"I can't see this going well, Yash. They will either force you to leave her or to they will disown you. And then what will you do? Do you know how to live without money, without your families support? What will that do to you? What will that to Aarti? You are making a huge mistake. And the biggest casualty in all of this will be Aarti."

"I will protect her."

"You are delusional, Yash. Let her go now, while it's still early days and she can get over it quicker. Let her go before it's too late. If you love her as you say you do, then let her go otherwise you are going to break her heart."

"I promise I won't allow her to get hurt."

"Don't make promises you can't keep Yash."

"Prashant ..."

"I am going,"

"Prashant."

"What?"

"I am sorry, I know you ..."

"My feelings for her has nothing to do with this. You know you are not doing the right thing Yash. I never expected this of you."

He got into his car and drove off.

Yash went back to the apartment dejectedly.

"Yash, what happened? Is Prashant Ok?"

"Yes."

"Why was he so angry? I saw you two arguing from the balcony."

"He thinks that I am going to break your heart. He wants me to break up with you."

"Why does he think that?"

"My family."

"Oh."

"He is right you know, but I can't seem to want to let you go."

She smiled and hugged him.

"I love you. I have always known the challenges of being in a relationship with you. I will stay with you as long as you want me too. I trust you baby. You are my saviour remember. You take care of me and you love me. And you make sooo happy. And again I say, we will take it one step at a time. We will deal with the problems when we get to it. But for now just let's be happy and enjoy our time together. You love me don't you?"

"I love you to the moon and back."

"That's all I need. Now give me a kiss, then I will make your favourite supper, and you can watch me cook and drool over me like you usually do." she smiled.

He laughed.

"So you enjoy teasing me do you? It's a very dangerous game you are playing. You are alone and defenceless at the mercy of a debaucherous man like me and you dare to tempt me."

"Who says I am playing a game?" She said. She kissed him on the cheek and walked off to kitchen.

He chuckled and followed her to the kitchen. She always knew how to cheer him up.

Two weeks later Yash came home from campus. Aarti only had a morning classes so she was home early. He smelt a beautiful aroma coming from the kitchen and knew she had to be here. What he saw surprised him. She was sitting in the kitchen across from Prashant. They were seemingly having a serious talk and Aarti was holding his hand.

"Hello. Everything ok here?" he asked.

She wiped her eyes and got up. She walked to him and kissed him.

"Hello baby, look who is joining us for dinner today."

"Scindiya" Prashant said in his usual way.

"Dubey" he said back.

"Care for game of squash while the little woman cooks?" The complex had a gym, squash and tennis courts as well as a swimming pool.

"Why not. I haven't beaten anyone in a while."

"We'll see about that." They went to change and went off to the squash court.

They played and as usual Yash won.

They shook hands.

"Thank you" Yash said.

"For what?"

"You know."

"You have an amazing girl. You better take care of her or you will have me to deal with."

They smiled at each other.

"I know."

That night in bed:

"Aarti."

"Hmmm" she said snuggling into his arms.

"Thank you."

"For?"

"As if you don't know. Aarti, do you ..."

"What?"

"Do you have feelings for him?"

She sat up immediately.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean when I came in you two looked very intense."

"We had a serious talk. You know I love you. How can you ask me such a question? I care for Prashant. He has always been a good friend to me. And I didn't want to be the one that comes between two best friends." She was angry at him.

"I am sorry baby. I know all that. It seems as much as you make me secure, you can make me feel insecure. I can't stand the thought of losing you."

"You won't lose me. Well not, not unless you ask me such ridiculous questions again. I'm in love with you and only you. I will be yours forever and always." she said lay back down next to him embracing him.

He kissed her lingeringly.

"How did I get so lucky?" he asked.

"I don't know. Now let me sleep because you are not going to get any luckier than this."

He grabbed closer and kissed her passionately.

"What were you saying about getting lucky?" he asked while she was still in ad dazed state.

"N ... Nothing."

"That's what I thought. Good night, sweetheart." he smiled and she smiled back knowing she was bested in this. She made herself comfortable in his arms and went to sleep.

He sighed. He envied her, her peace at night. Every night was torture for him before he fell asleep. Her delectable body was the death of him but the sacrifice was small for a lifetime of love and happiness that he had planned for them.

Aarti was excited. She had started her 2nd year at Yale. Their separation was unbearable when they were home. They were both in India but they hadn't seen each other. They had to secretly call each other when they could. And now they were both back. He was only back for a short time. He had come to tie things up for his final move back home and for his graduation ceremony. He was busy that day so she had an opportunity, with Prashant's help to collect his graduation gift. They would be apart soon so she had gotten him a locket with photos of them inside.

Prashant entered the house first and she noticed that he came to an abrupt halt. She saw Yash and a beautiful young lady sit on the couch. She was dressed in stunning Anarkali suit.

"Namaste Prashantji."

"Namaste Arpitaji. This is a surprise."

"Yes, I wanted to surprise Yashji. Maji and Bauji agreed that I could come before the graduation to spend some time here."

"I see."

Aarti knew something was happening, she was just not sure what. She saw the looks passing from Yash and Prashant and Yash was also looking at her and he seemed nervous.

"Who is your friend Prashantji."

"Uhm, this is Aarti." Only giving a one side introduction.

"How rude these men are. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Arpita Singh. Yashji's fiance."

Aarti wasn't sure if she heard right. But one look at Yash confirmed that she had heard right.

She felt herself getting dizzy and nauseas.

Prashant arm came around her to steady her.

"Aartiji, are you ok?" asked Arpita.

She gained composure despite the pain that was ripping through her heart.

"No Arpitaji, I am fine. I didn't have anything to eat today." This was at least true.

"Pleased to meet you."

"You too. So are you Prashant's girlfriend."

"No, we are just good friends."

"And you live close by."

"I study at Yale and I have a dorm room there." She couldn't tell her where she really lived and she didn't want to lie to her, since she was already cheating with her fiance.

"Speaking of which, I need to get back. Can you please take me Prashant?"

He nodded.

Yash had not expected this. He had just come back to the apartment earlier when the doorbell rang. He was amused. How many times did she forget her keys? But he was glad that she had come home a little early. She had said that Prashant was taking her for lunch as he was too busy. He was ok with that. He knew their relationshio was not a threat. But he nearly had a heart attack when he saw who it was.

"Arpitaji"

"Surprise" she said.

"What are you doing here?"

"Can I come in?"

"Oh, of course. Sorry, I was just so surprised."

She smiled. He offered something to drink. He tried to call Prashant and he messaged him but he was not answering or checking his phone. He died a thousand deaths when Aarti came home with Prashant. He didn't know what her reaction would be but he did not expect her to remain as calm as she did. He jumped up when he saw he face go ashen and it looked like she was about to faint. But Prashant was on it.

And now she was leaving. She didn't even look at him after that look of affirmation after Arpita introduced herself.

"Arpitaji, please excuse me. I forgot to ask Prashant something."

He didn't wait to answer as he briskly left the apartment. She was walking but Prashant's arms were still around her. She did not look steady on her feet.

"Aarti, baby. Wait. I'm sorry. I was going to tell you."

She looked at him with so much pain.

"But you didn't. How long have you been engaged for?'

"Three years."

She looked at Prashant and shook her head in accusation. They both betrayed her by keeping this from her.

"Go to your fiance Yash. It's over between us."

"Aarti please, I can't talk now. I will come and see you later. I will explain everything."

"What is there to explain Yash? We have been seeing each other and living together for almost a year and you never told me you were engaged. I am the other woman. You made a cheater out of me."

"I love you baby. I did what was needed to keep you with me."

"Well now you've lost me. I don't ever want to see you again. Prashant will get my things from the apartment. Good bye, Yash."

She got into the car.

Prashant looked at him pityingly.

"Go back to Arpita. Speak to Aarti later when she's had a chance to calm down. She loves you. But you have to decide what you are going to do. Let her go or tell you parents and Arpita about her."

"I guess this is the perfect "I told you" so moment."

"Yash, you are both in pain now. Do you think I relish that? I just want you to make it right, so you can both stop hurting. Just make it right or you could lose the best thing that has ever happened to you. I will stand by you.

"Thank you. Please make sure that she is ok."

He nodded and got in the car and drove off.

And it all started so well, two NRI students getting to know each other . Yash literally making it easier for Aarti to adapt to the new surrounding in Yale, becoming friend, spending time together and soon fell in love and live happy while completing their studies and progress in life. But of course it could not be that easy (and we wouldn't have a story 😆). The parents/tradition talk was ominous. 😕. It interesting how you realistically described the hopes and dreams we have when we are in university , life if full of option but also, the doubts, fears of failing or not making your parents proud especially being abroad and having invest so much in their children (this brought memory while reading).
Meeting Aarti was a defining moment for Yash and there he grew up, become more mature. He found what he didn't know he wanted , a love but also his purpose on life and he tackle his studies a little more seriously and not just because he had a secure future.
The voice of reason came from Prashant, he is a good friend and unfortunetely , he stated the truth. Yash was living in a bubble but deep down he knows how much this relationship will not be easy with his parents. Aarti did told him, but I guess she also was swept by the romance. He should have told him about his family decision when Prashant discovered them, but now he has indeed broke her heart to pieces. Men 😡, so stupid or coward sometimes and typical, reaction, "I was going to tell you". A little too late. He almost deserve to lose her forever, both he and Prashant screw up badly.

side note: funny I first read the title as unanswered prayer and was scratching my head thinking another sad story but then my vision clear it seems😆. Although reading the story, its almost unanswerd for now.
Looking forward to see how Yash resolved this.
