Chapter 7

Yash was regretting with everything within him offering her this opportunity to work with them on behalf of the tenants on this project. She was driving him insane. She was stubborn and unrealistic. Often this lead to screaming matches between the two of them. She just would not listen to reason. It was clear that her only objective was to oppose him. They were supposed to have a meeting now but again they were having another heated argument.

"I will not stay here another moment and have you shout at me. You can do so to the other workers here, but not me. You are rude and abrasive. You have already made up your mind about what's going to happen. But I tell you again I will not allow it just because I am now on your payroll. she was shouting and not for the first time, she grabbed her bag and stormed off.

His staff looked at him uncomfortably.

"Everyone stay here till I come back. he said angrily.

He followed her with a purpose. She was still waiting for the lift when her grabbed her by the arm and dragged her behind him.

"Let go of me you brute. she shouted.

He just kept walking until they were in his office and he slammed the door so hard that the walls were shaking.

"What do you think you're doing? she demanded.

"Enough! He shouted.

"I have had enough of you and your temper tantrums. Even my children have enough sense to behave better.

"They are not only ...

"Be quiet, I am not finished. he said dangerously.

"I will have no more of this do you hear me. I am the boss here. Do you understand? I run this company and I do it well. The people here respect and look up to me. And I don't tolerate disrespect. Infact, I have never had to, because everyone here respects me and looks up to me. Do you think that I will allow you to break down that respect? You don't have to like me or respect me on a personal level but you will respect my position in this company. That is if you are still interested in working on this project. Are you Aarti?

"Y ... Yes. she said now shaken.

"Then you will behave with the proper decorum. You will be professional, you will do you research and you will respect everyone else that is working on this project. That means having informed arguments about the project and not making this a personal vendetta. That means not raising your voice and storming out of meetings. If you can't do this, tell me now. Remember I don't need you here. You want to be here to make sure that your precious Verma and his friends are being treated fairly. And I have tolerated more than enough from you. If you want to continue on this project, then we go back to the boardroom and you apologise to everyone and we go on where we left off. If you don't have anything of value to contribute then be quiet, but next time you come here you better have prepared well. I am not paying you a salary to only throw tantrums. This is your last chance. Understood.

She tried to muster a last ditch of defiance but she knew he was serious. She had never seen him like this before. Yes they had fought before, but clearly Yash the partner, father and lover was different to Yash the business man.

"Understood Aarti! he said making her jump.

"Yes.

"Good. He walked out of the office, back to the boardroom with her in tow.

"Thank you all for your patience. Miss Khuranna has something to say.

She cleared her throat. She was so embarrassed.

"I'm sorry for my behaviour. It was very unprofessional and it wasted everyone's time. This will never happen again. I promise.

Later that evening, when the kids had been put to bed she went to him in his study.

"Yash ...

He sighed heavily.

"What is it Aarti. It's been a long day and my patience has already worn out. Besides I still have a lot of work to do.

"I just wanted to say that I am sorry.

"What?

"I wanted to apologise. I already apologised to the committee members but I need to apologise to you too. You were right. I accused you of it, but I was the one making this a personal vendetta. I disrespected you in front of your staff and that was unacceptable. I didn't even realise it until you brought it to my attention. I'm really very sorry.

"It's fine. he shrugged.

"Will you give me some time?

"Time for what?

"I have realised that I was not doing justice to anybody concerning this project. It's about time I start to buckle down and do some research and do a proper presentation to the committee and the Scindiya board. That is if you don't mind.

"How long.

"It shouldn't take longer than say 2 weeks. You don't have to pay me for it.

He shrugged again.

"Well that's all. Good night Yash.

"Good night.

She closed the door behind her and sighed. That was so hard to do. What she said was all true. She behaved appallingly. It was so unlike her. She just wanted to hurt and undermine him. And that was wrong. She never did that with the children and she should not have done so in front of his staff. And she could see how it affected him and it scared her. She didn't want to consider why she feared his reaction to her today and even now. She could face his anger and wrath, but could she live with his disinterest. She knew the answer. No matter what happened in the past, what is happening and what would happen, she was still loved him more than her life and that would never stop.

When the door closed behind her, Yash rested his head on his hands and sighed. He had not expected this. In fact, He expected another confrontation when she came to his office. He was really tired. The constant fights was getting the better of him. Then she came in here and completely took the wind out of his sails by apologising. He actually did not know how to respond, hence his shrugs. Now he had time to contemplate. Slowly, a smile graced his face. He will take it. A small victory, but he will take it. He gave an air punch and carried on working with a heart much lighter heart than a few minutes ago.

There was another soft knock on the door and it opened.

"You said that you had some more work to do so I brought you coffee and biscuits. You looked tired so ...

"Thank you. That was very thoughtful. he said stretching his neck.

"Don't work too late.

He smiled as she left. All of a sudden he had his second wind. He was fully energised. The coffee and biscuits would help but the hope of his love was what propelled him.

Things changed from that day. Her schedule did not change where the children was concerned but she was busy with the Beach project when she wasn't busy with the kids. She had no desk in her room and he knew that she did not really want to be at home, so he arranged an office for her at the company.

In the evenings she joined him in his study and at first they just worked silently but soon, they started talking about the project, bouncing ideas off of each other. It was fruitful and very amicable.

At the end of the two weeks she presented to the Scindiya board as well as the Beach Project committee. He was so proud of her. She had valid points and it was clear she was objective in her analysis and solutions. Of course not all everyone agreed with her, even he did not agree on all her points but at least it generated a healthy debate.

That night Aarti was sitting up in bed when he entered her room. She looked worried.

"Aarti.

"Mm?

"I just wanted to say well done. Your presentation was very good.

"But you had such a lot of objections.

"Aarti that was expected. Remember, for all intents and purposes we are on opposing sides. But even I have to agree that everything was well researched and well thought out. You answered the questions thrown at you with confidence because you are well informed. Of course not everything will be done like you want it to, but we are working towards compromise on both sides.

"You really think that I did well?

"I do.

"Thank you that means a lot to me. I was feeling like I didn't represent the tenants well.

"You did a great job. Trust me. So you might just save most of the tenants and you didn't even have to marry me to do so. A win win situation, right?

She looked up at him in shock. She did not know how to take that.

"Don't worry Aarti. It was just a joke. Occasionally this happens you know.

She smiled, visibly relieved.

"Any way, good night. I have an early flight tomorrow. I will see you in a week and half.

He stretched his neck again as he walked out.

She knew he was stressed. Obviously the beach project was not his only concern. He had so much on his plate as well as the stress at home with her and his family still at odds as well.

Yash had settled in bed and switched on the tv. He knew would not fall asleep immediately. Again there was the now familiar soft knock on the door and she entered before he could answer.

"Aarti?

"Lavender oil.

He just looked at her questioningly.

"You look tense. And you have a long flight tomorrow. You need a good night's rest. I was thinking that a neck and shoulder massage could help? it was more a question that a statement.

He didn't reply, just continued to look at her. She walked to the bed and sat down.

"Take off your t-shirt and lie on your stomach.

He did as he was told, not convinced that her touching him would cause him to sleep but instead awaken things in him.

It's been so long since he felt her touch. It felt so good. He need not have worried about his other needs. Right now he need the soothing, gentle touch in another way. He closed his eyes and relished these precious moments. His eyes burning with unshed tears for all the years lost and the continued separation. But her touch released something in him. He did feel his body relaxing. And he drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep.

She was so afraid to make the offer. She was afraid that he would either chase her away or take it up the wrong way. But she felt his knotty muscles relax under her fingers and palms. And then his even breathing as he fell asleep. She still continued to massage for a while longer. Just being able to touch him again felt so good. Helping him to relax made her feel so blessed. She touched his hair and just ran her fingers down the back of his neck and back.

"I love you so much, Yash. I wish ... I wish ... No, I pray that we can find each other again. Please, Lord. You answered my prayer once. You have never taken that answer away, though we are close to each other yet so very far apart. I pray that I can have the freedom and the opportunity to help him like I did tonight, to help ease his stress. To make his life easier. To pour out the love is that is in my heart. I want to be his wife, not because of a promise but because he loves me and I him. If there is a way to bridge this gap, please just give me a sign. For our children's sake and also for the sake of our love. And please bring him home safely to us. Please hear my prayer. Please.

She wiped her tears away and kissed him softly on his cheek and left for her room.

It was a long week and a half for all of them. It was his first long trip since Arpita's passing. The children were not used to it anymore and they didn't like it even though he called them every morning and evening. Aarti had a tough time with the children and Yash's family. On top of which, Arpita's parents all of a sudden appeared over the weekend and wanted to take the children for some time.

Aarti would not allow this without their fathers consent and this caused a major argument in front of the children, causing them to be even more upset. Aarti was ready to head for the heels.

The only peaceful time she had was at the office where she worked on the project, ironing out some glitches and finding solutions for the objections the board had. She dreaded going home every day.

When Yash finally came home the children were even more unmanageable. He missed them and was over indulgent because he knew about their separation issues. She could not deal with it all.

She went to his room after the children had gone to sleep.

"Yash, do you think it was wise to agree to let the children stay home from school tomorrow?

He looked up at her.

"You obviously don't

"No, I don't. They need routine Yash. It's part of your job to travel. Will they then stay out of school every time you go out of town?

"Aarti it's just one day. Don't make a big deal of it. Please, I'm tired.

"You're tired? You're tired? For the last week and a bit, I have had to deal with your parents, Arpita's parents, emotional and uncooperative children. But I'm fine. It's been a breeze. No one ever asks how I am doing? You came home and just spoilt the children, took them out of their routine. When they don't have to sleep on time, then who has to deal with them when they are tired in the morning. When you play with them and then who has to sit with them when they are tired and have to do homework? Now you want to keep them out of school as well. Good, very good. You just go ahead. Because I count for nothing here. You made a big song and dance about disrespecting me at your office. This is my job, my biggest responsibility. Who is undermining who now?

She walked out of the bedroom.

Yash did his deep sigh again and dropped his head and followed her.

She was busy packing.

"What are you doing?

"Isn't it obvious?

"Ok, where are you going?

"Home, I guess.

"Home?

"Or your other house, whatever?

"Don't be stupid Aarti. You can't go.

"Watch me.

"And the children?

"You know what? You deal with them. You tell them why I left. You console them and tell them I will be back.

"Will you?

"Will I what?

"Be back.

She stopped packing and looked at him.

"You know what, I actually don't know. All I know right now, is that I need a break. Because if I don't have one, I will be the one that is broken. I have been carrying this huge weight on me since Arpita passed on with no support. She was my only support when she was alive. Now I have nothing. And I'm so close to breaking point that you won't believe. So if I don't take myself out of this situation it won't be good for anyone, least of all the children. I don't even know who I am anymore. I live in a home where no one wants me, I have no family that I can look to, I have one friend that I nearly cost the livelihood of, besides Bhabhi and Prateek. I love my children but I can't be with them or you right now.

"Aarti, this is insane. You want them to wake up and you've left. Do you know how that will affect them?

"Fine, tomorrow they are staying home from school as per your decision. We will take them out for the day and we will explain to them that mummy is going away for a bit. Right.

"No.

"Yes, Yash. Yes. Give me this. It's always been what you wanted. Always. If you ever loved me even a little bit, give me this.

"And if I don't.

"Then I will still leave.

He walked out. One step forward and 10 steps back he thought. When he was so determined to keep her with him, she wanted to leave again. He was broken. Prashant's words echoed in his head. But how did he fight for her now. He knew from experience that she is determined when she made up her mind and that he couldn't keep her. Would it be for good this time? It was really serious if she was prepared to leave the children.

He couldn't stop the tears. He was sobbing. He had no answer. His prayers were useless.

Aarti too was sobbing in her room. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving him and the children but she could not stay. She was on the verge of a break down. But she didn't know if she walked out of this house if there would be a way, back into his house or his heart, but she had no option but to risk it.

The children had a nice day out. They took them to Essel World. Then they had to break the news. As expected, it was tears all around.

"No mummy, stay.

"I just taking a break. You know, same as when you have a school holiday or when daddy goes away to work far away.

"When will you be back?

"I'm not sure. I might decide that I will stay back in my house and daddy at his house like before.

"No mummy. I didn't like that. Said Ansh.

"Ok sweetheart, I understand that you didn't like it, but right now you mummy has some grown up things that she had to work through. You know that dadaji and dadiji and I keep fighting. Remember when you were angry with me because of Arpita-mummy. Well they are still angry with me because of her. So I was thinking that it would be good for us to just stay out of each other's way, you know like a time out for a while. I am not going away for good. I love you very much my angels. I need to do this to be a better mom for you.

The children still did not get it.

"Ansh, Palak, Payal, now listen to Me. said Yash.

"We don't want your mummy to leave do we?

"No they chorused.

"But we also love her a lot and want her to be healthy. And sometimes when you love someone so much, you have to let them do what they need instead of what you want. Let's give your mom a break. I promise, we will be together again very soon. You trust me right?

"Soon Pappa? said Palak.

"Very soon my angel. I will do everything in my power for that to happen.

"I trust you Pappa said Ansh and the other two took their elder brothers lead.

She said good bye to the children and he walked her out.

"Thank you for that Yash, but you should not have made that promise to the children.

"Why not. It's a promise I intend to keep. I will give you this time Aarti. Not too long, but use it to come to terms with the fact that we will be together. In every sense. This will be the last time we are separated. Good bye, Aarti. he said and walked away.

She looked at him as he was walking off. She didn't know how to feel about what he said. She always knew that he loved her but for them it just never seemed to be enough. Will it be now. She had to clear her head, she needed her time out as she told the kids. Away from everyone and everything.

Thank you B updating this story. I hope Arti and Yash find their way back to each other. At least fortheir children's sake if not for each other. Although they still love each other and I hope a break from each other will make them realize that they can be together without opposing each other. Will await for the next update to see what they decide.

Yash and Aarti are doing their best to hurt each other, they really love each other but the guilt over Arpita is making them act irrational and continuously inflicting so much pain on each other, and his family is not making it easy for them to mend their relationship by hating on Aarti, i just hope they can manage to save their love and be good parents to their babies...beautiful update Bee

Thanks so much for reading. I know it has been a outstanding for a long time.
Love has never been an issue for them, the issue has always that love has never been enough. There has always been outside factors keeping them apart, the challenge is holding on to their love inspite of what else is happening in their lives.

We'll see if they will be able to do this.

Yes, you hit the nail on the head. They act irrationally, on instinct and do more harm than good. Then it becomes a complete mission to try and make amends. They actually need to get out of their own way and make a way towards each other.

I'm sure they will in the end.

I will try and update soon😃
