Chapter 6

"Yash my son what I want to tell you is just between the two of us. For the moment I don't want Aarti to know."
"What is it Bauji?"
"I am dying."
"No bauji, that can't be. We will get a second opinion. We will get the best doctors money can buy."
"Son, don't you think I have done that. I have cancer. I don't have long to live. And I need you to do something for me. I need you to take over VK. I can't do it anymore. I can see Aarti has changed since marrying you. She has become of a housewife and I know you two are planning to have a baby. I don't want to burden Aarti with this. I will leave half my shares of VK to you and half to Aarti. I trust you not only to keep my company alive but to make it prosper even more for my grandchildren."
"But bauji, how will Aarti feel about this. This is her inheritance."
This is what he wanted, but all of a sudden he felt guilty. He didn't want it. He wanted his father in law to survive. And he knew how devastated Aarti would be if she lost her father. And he would be too. He had grown to love this man. He had shown him a completely different side of fatherhood. He made him want to be a better man.
"You are married to my daughter. The company is for the two of you and my grandchildren, your children. "
"Bauji, please can I speak to your doctors."
"You can but it will make no difference."
"I still want to."
Yash was devastated when he came from seeing the doctors. There was really no hope.
"Bauji, we have to tell her."
"Not yet. She is happy now. She will know soon enough."
"But the shares bauji, it's hers."
"I have decided Yash. Can I trust you to fulfil a dying man's wish"
"Yes"
He went back home. It was so difficult for him to keep the secret. He even kept it from his father. But the announcement was made about his father in law stepping down and him taking over. This discussion was had with his father and Aarti.
She was very happy for him. She had no clue. She trusted him so much.
His father was ecstatic. Half the goal had been reached. He was now convinced that his company would reached the echelon of the engineering world that he had envisaged. Nothing else mattered to him. He didn't even notice that his son was not as ecstatic about the events as he was. He was totally caught up in his own sense of victory over Vheer Khuranna.
Soon after the announcement she told him one night in bed.
"Yash, if pappa trusts you with the company, I will too. Besides we are married. We are one. I want to sign over my share of the company to you too.
"Aarti, it's not necessary. I can run the business, you don't have to sign your shares over to me."
"But I want to."
"Aarti ..."
"I want to, Yash. End of discussion."
"Aarti..." but she knew how to shut him up. She was kissing him and on top of him and riding him into oblivion.
"See, we are one aren't we? Will you do what I want?" she asked afterwards, still keeping him inside her breathing heavily in the aftermath.
"Yes' he said still panting.
And soon she had the papers drawn up and the process started.
The day that the transfer was complete, his father called him into his office just as the office was closing.
As expected he was over the moon. The goal has been reached. He was still torn. He wanted to please his father. That was always his goal wasn't it. Even when his father asked about Arpita, he hadn't thought it was necessary to set him straight. He was still seeing Arpita. They would go out for a bite to eat or a drink but he hadn't been sleeping with her since his marriage. And although she knew since that night when Aarti was in Bhopal that he wouldn't sleep with her, she made sure that he knew she was always available.
He heard a sound just outside the door. He went to investigate. He saw a crumpled up piece of paper lying on the floor. He picked it up and read it. He started running towards the lift. But she was nowhere to be found. Her car was still out front but she was gone. He made his way to his office to get his car keys.
"What is it Yash" his father asked.
"Aarti was here Bauji. She heard. And I found this at the door. She is pregnant."
"Why are you running after her Yash?"
"She is my wife Bauji. She is pregnant. She just heard the most devastating news that she ever could and she ran off. What if something happens to her or the baby? Your grandchild. I will never forgive myself."
"Why are you so worried about her? This was just a business deal."
"Yes, that was how it started. But now ... Now I love her bauji. I love her. I hope I still have a chance to prove it to her after this." he ran out of there again.
He didn't find her that night. But she came home the next day. He could see the hatred and disgust in her eyes for him. It was not the right time for him to tell her of his feelings.
When his father in law took a turn for the worst, she went back to Bhopal to look after him and he followed. She didn't want her father to know what the true nature of his relationship was. So he used those moments when the three of them were together to be close to her. They were always affectionate in front of her father. She couldn't do anything to get away from him. But when they were alone she treated him with absolute disdain.
One day he was alone with his father in law and he asked.
"What is going on between you and Aarti?"
"Nothing Bauji? Why?"
"I am a dying old man, son but my senses are not so dull that I can't see that my children are not happy."
Yash thought about it. It was his chance to come clean. To confess, despite the consequences.
"Bauji, I hurt her. She hates me now and when you hear why you will hate me too."
"Tell me anyway."
He told him the sordid story from the beginning.
"Son. I you have made me very happy."
"Bauji? I don't understand." He was flabbergasted. He thought that he would hate him and demand his company back and he was ready to give it back and walk out of their lives. Even his child's life.
"Yash, I can die peacefully now. The fact that you confessed to me means that you are the man that I always knew you were. A man of integrity. I have not come this far in my life by being stupid. I knew what you had planned. I knew you were trained and raised by SJ Scindiya. I knew what it was that you thought you wanted. But what I also saw was the heart of your mother in you. G3 is a good woman. She has a big heart. She also had a hand in raising you. I saw the look in your eyes when you saw Aarti at the presentation the first time and when she walked into my office. I knew that you needed to work through your feelings and you would realise soon enough that you love her and that she is more important than a company. And as I told you that day. I trust my daughter. I knew she would not love a man with no redeeming qualities. You love her don't you?"
"So much bauji. But I don't think she will ever forgive me."
"She will find her way back to you. Don't give up. And she doesn't need to know about this discussion"
"Thank you Bauji. Thank you for everything. Thank you for giving me your daughter despite knowing my intentions and trusting and giving me the strength to become what you saw in me. I am still a work in progress but I now have a role model in you. You are the father I want to be, the man I want to be. I promise you that I will look after Aarti and our child as good as you would have done."
"I know son, I know." A couple of hours later he passed away in his sleep.
And everything went further downhill after her father died. Then the baby came and she recovered a little. But the death of the baby totally broke her. She walked around in a permanent trance. She didn't do anything for herself. If Vhidhi and his mother didn't see to it that she ate, dressed and got out of bed she would have just stayed there. Mansi and Neelam came for a few days. They tried to talk to her. If anyone could get her out of that state it would probably be them. They ended up crying on either side of her because there was no response. She never even acknowledged their presence. And when she left, when she walked out his life, he still hadn't told her how he felt about her.

His family life had deteriorated. He had distanced himself from his father. His mother was still grieving the loss of her bahu and grandchild.

The headquarters of VK and S engineering was now situated in Dehli. He had taken over from his father as CEO and set the merget in motion. His father did not step down without a fight, but with his shares in VK and SE, he was the majority shareholder and pretty much do as he pleased. He wanted to make change the ethos of the SE to that of VK. He wanted to keep the legacy that his father law had left alive in his life and in the company.

He had continued doing what VK and his father in law had been renowned for, he contributed extensively to various charities. And today he was going to such an event. It was a children's home just outside of Dehli that they were going to start sponsoring. He heard good things about the matron and the workers. He would go there to look around to see what was needed and also to present a cheque. His new assistant had been there a few times and would accompany him again. He would meet the matron and also the principal of the school that the most of the children went to. According to his assistant there was also a co-ordinator. She did all the administration of the home and tutored the children. She also cooked and played with the kids. He seemed quite taken with her.

Some kids playing cricket on the field. There was a woman playing with them. She was fielding and had her back to them. She was wearing t-shirt and track pants and her hair was in a ponytail. There was something familiar about her. They walked towards the field and he saw the young boy hit the ball towards her. She started backtracking straight to him. He tried to give way but she swerved the same way and jumped for the ball. She caught it and was about to fall to the back and he caught her.
She turned around and his heart started beating double time. His head was reeling. He held onto her arms.
"Sorry," she said and moved away from him.
"Aarti" he whispered she looked at him strangely
"Sir, this is Pia, the administrator that I have been telling you about. Pia, this is Yash Scindiya, my boss and head of VK and S engineering.
She extended her hand.
"Pleased to meet you. Thank you so much for your interest in our home. You have no idea how much you contributions will help us,"
He couldn't speak. He just stared at her and she just nervously walked away.
It had to be her, but there was no sign of recognition in her eyes. He wanted to follow her, but the matron and principal was there to meet him too. They spoke and took him on a tour of a the home. But his mind was only on her. He was desperate to know how she ended up here. And why she did not recognise him or was she just pretending.
"Matron, your administrator, how long has she been working here?' he asked when they were sitting alone in her office.
"Just short of a year. She was in a vehicle accident. She wasn't badly hurt but she couldn't remember anything after that. Not even her name. I went to visit the hospital and she was in the children's ward helping the kids and I offered her a job here. She had been invaluable. She must be from a good family. You can see she is very cultured and educated. I pray every day that she finds her way back to her family. Although I am happy to have her here. We have been so blessed by her. She has made the place run so much smoother and she is responsible for us getting so much more sponsorships like yours"
"So remembers nothing about her life before the accident"
"Nothing."
"I see. And no one ever came looking for her?"
"No"
"She has finally settled down now and I think there is something between her and Mr. Dubey"
"The principal?"
"Yes, he has always been smitten with her, but she didn't want to get involved due to the amnesia, but is seems she is slowly warming up to him." she smiled.
Yash could feel the anger and jealousy rise up in him.
"Thank you matron. I will see that Kunal sets up the monthly contributions into your account. I would also like to be more involved personally. You know if you need work done around the home or if you need to couch the kids with cricket or something."
"Thank you sir. That is very kind of you sir. I know a man of your stature must be very busy"
"It's the kind of thing my father in law did. I always wanted to do the same but I have lost track with my busy schedule. But today I have gotten my motivation back. I got my life back,"
"Sir?"
"I will see you again very soon matron" he smiled.
He head indeed gotten his life back. He would be given a 2nd chance. He could start with a clean slate. He could win her all over again. And this time with pure intentions. And if she gets her memory back, then hopefully by then she could forgive him.
"Bauji, finally I can fulfil the promise I made to you the day you died. I couldn't look after her or our baby before. Now I will look after her and hopefully you will have more grandchildren that I can look after." He smiled as he silently spoke to his late father in law.

Congrats B, you are doing it again. This is another classico. Read most of the story in one go. Yash seemed to have realised at some point that what is good for business is not necessarily good for his heart. Poor Aarti no
Sooner than she lost her father, her baby passed on too in his cot. It was too much to take so she suffered a nervous breakdown. Aarti's father was such an awesome person, for him by Yash having courage to confess meant he had integrity. If only SP was anything close. Anyhoo Aarti's father knew G3 would love his daughter as her own. I hope G3 will be relieved to learn her Bahu is alive and well, save for the amnesia and is working with children. So looking forward to reading more.

Chapter 7

Yash felt like someone with a new lease on life. However he had decided to keep his information to himself. He didn't want to share it with anyone yet. He wanted to woo her. He wanted her to love him again and make sure that she knows that he loves her loves too. But it was difficult for him not to just carry her off to his home, but what would he tell her. How would she handle the truth about their relationship? He could lose her before he had a chance to win her back. So he would keep up the pretence of being a stranger to her. And he would woo Pia, the administrator, to get back Aarti, his wife.

He learnt that she was actually the coach of the cricket and hockey teams and that they were very successful. He learnt that they practiced twice a week and the nice thing about being a CEO was that your time was your own. He decided that he would be assistant coach. He was there twice a week to help with the cricket coaching. He actually enjoyed his interaction with the children immensely. He excelled as a cricket player at school and college so he had quite a bit to impart and the kids relished it. They took to him very easily. And just like everything else he undertook, he was a good at coaching cricket.

He got a lot of opposition from her. It seemed that she felt threatened by him.
"As anything wrong, Miss" it was difficult for him to call her Pia. "Nothing, Mr Scindiya."
"I sense that I am somehow making you angry."
"I am not angry just annoyed"
"About what."
"I have been the coach for as long as I have been here and we have been very successful. We always end in the top 5 in the district. We don't need an assistant coach. Will you do better because you are a man?"
"Miss, I have had cricket coaching since I was 4 years old. I love the game and I played it at school and college level successfully. I don't want to take over your position, I would just like to assist where I can. I can see you did a great job, but two heads are better than one. Maybe together we can be even more successful."
She looked at him warily.
"I suppose."
She was not only wary of him where the cricket was concerned. There was something about him that bothered her. She didn't trust him. And now he was here twice a week wearing that vest thingy exposing his muscular arms. It made her feel all funny inside. And that first day after she met him, she had a dream about him. It was a very racy dream, but it seemed so real. She had woken up all hot and bothered and she refused to feel like this. She couldn't remember anything and for all she knew she could be married with children. Prashant had been interested in her from the time she came to the children's home, but she made sure he understood that she could not commit to him. But Prashant did not make her feel like this man.
Just because he was male and rich he thought he could just come and take over. She had started the cricket and hockey teams when she started there. She didn't know how, but she seemed to know a lot about the sports. And she was successful. They played against schools and other children's home and they always did well. Did he really think he could do better? But it was evident that the boys starting to refer to him more and more for help with the cricket and she was loathe to admit that he was a good coach. This season, the team was not just good, they were great. Even after just a few practice sessions with him, they improved vastly. She had to admit it to herself. He was good for them. And they really liked him. She felt a little jealous. Before he got there, she was their favourite. Now they preferred to go to him. But for the good of the children she let it be.

She focused more on the hockey and he focused more on the cricket. He even came weekends and helped around the home. He seemed to be a good handyman too. Sometimes he stayed for dinner and would animatedly talk the boys. They built a sort of camaraderie with him. She didn't like him being here so much. And the dreams wouldn't stop. And it wasn't just racy dreams. She dreamt of them going on a gondola in Venice. Playing in the surf in Mumbai, she dreamt that she was marrying him. Those were only a few scenarios but most of the times she could not remember what she dreamt but that it was of him. She found it very difficult to look in his eyes but they seemed to have a workable relationship where it came to the coaching.
They finally made it to the finals of the local cricket tournament. It was all very exciting. He had team tracksuits made for them and they all had new whites and shoes. The kids were so excited. They went the field on a bus. They were the underdogs but they finally realised that there was a chance that they could win. It was so good for their morale and self-esteem. And she grudgingly gave him the credit for that. And they won. She was so excited that she screamed and jumped on him and gave him a fat kiss on his cheek. She suddenly realised what she did and tried to move away but he held on to her. Their gazes locked. His moved his face closer to hers and she stood waiting in anticipation. But suddenly the kids came running and jumped on them in celebration. The moment was lost but they still looked at each other. Her gaze was awkward, but he was smiling. She had to put a stop to this.

But it was easier said than done. He promised the children a celebration for their victory. They would have a huge party with jumping castles and waterslides, a magician and all the delicious treats that they could think of. She couldn't exactly tell him not do it. The kids were so happy. But after that she would ask him to stay away.

Yash loved spending time with her. She tried to keep a distance between them but that moment that they shared at the cricket tournament gave him some more hope. He had never told any of his family members about this. He first wanted the opportunity to make her love him again. But he decided to share his secret with someone.
"Ma, please go with me the party. You will love the kids. You are always asking me where I am going, now you have a chance to see."
"Yash, is there a girl."
"You won't know if you don't come with me."
"There is a girl isn't there? I am telling you now Yash, I will not accept anyone other than Aarti as my bahu. I know she is still alive."
"Fine, Ma. No go with me."
Finally she agreed.
The party was in swing when they got there. He mother was still very wary of it all and then she saw her, playing with some of the younger children in the distance."
"Aarti bahu? Is that her. Yash how long have you known she was here."
"A couple of months Ma. But Ma, she has amnesia. She doesn't know who I am. I didn't want anyone to know because I want to win her heart again Ma. I have a second chance with her and I don't want anything to get in the way of that. The only reason that I am letting you know is because you were grieving as much as I was. Please, I don't let anyone else to know."
"Yash do you think that it is wise?" his mother asked.
"I don't know ma, but that's what I want."
"Take me to her."
He introduced his mother to the matron and various other people and them to her.
"Ma, this is Pia, she is the administrator here. Miss Pia, this is my mother."
"Namaste Mrs. Scindiya."
"Beta, you are so beautiful. Give me a hug,"
You could see that Aarti was baffled but she hugged her nonetheless. His mother spent the rest of the day faffing around Aarti. She was so happy. As always the two of them had a natural report.
Aarti really liked this woman. She felt like a mother to her. And she heard her call the matron Rahda-ma so she asked her to call her G3-ma. She didn't mind doing it at all. It felt natural. She watched Yash's interaction with the kids again and she just knew that he was genuine with them. He showed real love and concern for them, but there was still something about him that made her uncomfortable.
She was busy refilling jugs of juice in the kitchen when she sensed his presence.
"Can I help?"
"I'm fine thank you."
"Why will accept help from everyone but me?"
She turned around and he was standing a little too close. She started breathing heavily. Her heart was racing.
"Sir, please."
"You can call me Yash."
"No, I don't want to. Please leave. The tournament is done. We don't need you anymore."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Yes" she said looking down.
"Look at me, Pia"
"No"
"Why not."
"I am afraid."
"What are you scared of me? I won't hurt you." he said. Moving closer to her. He moved her hair away from her face and lifted her chin to force her to look at him.
"You make me feel strange. I don't know what to make of this. I keep thinking about you but I somehow sense that I am not safe with you. Not physically but I feel I can't trust you with my heart."
"Does that mean you have considered giving your heart to me?"
"I don't know why I just told you that."
"I am glad that you did, because you already have my heart."
"There can't be anything between us. I don't know who I am. I might even be married. I might have children. I cannot commit to anyone."
"I know you are mine. We belong together. I know there can be no other man in your life but me."
"How can you be so sure?"
"My heart knows. And so does yours."
"I don't know any such thing."
"I hear what you saying with your mouth but your eyes are telling me a different story. They are the most beautiful, most expressive eyes I have ever seen. They can't lie"
"I need to take the juice."
"I love you"
"The children are waiting."
"I love you. And I will patiently wait for you to acknowledge what your heart already knows. That it belongs to me."
He took her hands in hers and kissed each one. He let them go and took the jugs out. She stayed behind shaken. It felt like he saw into her very soul. She did have feelings for him. Feelings that she wasn't ready to admit to. And what if she regained her memory and she did have family. How could he be so sure? She wasn't sure about that at all. She felt like she had someone in her life. But she also knew that she wanted him. And it scared her senseless. She needed to remember. She wanted to remember. She wanted to move on with her life. She need to know if she had a family and what her feelings for this man meant.
They were clearing up later and his mother was next to her.
"Beta, you had a long day. You must be tired."
"I am G3-ma"
"You know he comes here for you only."
She didn't expect the conversation to go this route so fast.
"G3-ma please..."
"Beta, he loves you. I have never seen him like this."
"How can you say that? Has he never had any women in his life?"
"He had had many women come in and out if his life. Then he got married."
"He is married."
"Beta, she left. He hurt her very badly and when he wanted to make amends it was too late."
"Did he love her?"
"He loved her, but he only realised it too late."
"Can't he get her back?"
"He is in love with you. He wants a fresh start with you. A new beginning. He wants to be the man, the husband that he couldn't be before. Give my son a chance. Give yourself a chance at happiness."
"I can't move on till I remember my past."
"But you feel something for him"
She nodded her head.
"Trust your heart. It will lead you to where you need to be. Back to your past and into your future."
"I'm not ready."
G3-ma kissed her on the cheek.
"I hope for both your sakes, soon. Good bye Beta."

Arpita was still hopeful of a future with Yash. She was still always around whether he wanted her there or not. She sensed the change in him. He was suddenly happy again. She suspected his change of attitude had something to do with that children's home that he was spending all his time at. She wanted to know what it was. She decided to take a drive there one day. She came there with the pretence of wanting to help. But they wouldn't let her just see the kids. There was a screening process as there were children involved. She had to see the administrator and then the matron. She waited impatiently. She was just about to leave when she came.
"Hello ma'am, I believe you would like to assist us."
"Aarti?"
"Excuse me?'
"So he found you?"
"What, who found me. Do you know who I am?"
"Don't play dumb with me. Are you two back together,"
"Ma'am I have no idea what you are talking about."
"Why has Yash not told anyone that he has found you?"
"Yash... found me. I don't understand."
"What game are you playing at Aarti?"
Then she realised that she heard that name before. The first time that he came here he called her that. She felt dizzy and faint. He knew who she was and he didn't say anything. She felt herself lose consciousness.
When she woke up she was in her room with Rhada-ma.
"Rhada-ma, where is that woman. I need to speak to her."
"She left."
She got up with a purpose.
"Where are you going Pia?"
"I am going to VK and S Engineering."
"Why?"
"We will talk when I get back."
She took a taxi that brought her his office. She asked to see him at the front desk,
"Ma'am, you have to make an appointment. You cannot just see Mr. Scindiya."
"Tell him I am here to see him. I demand to see him now."
"Ma'am please"
Then she heard someone say.
"Aarti Bhabhi, is that you?"
She looked at the young man.
"Are you related to Yash Schindiya?"
"Bhabhi, don't you recognise your chote bhaiya."
"Please take me to Yash."
The young man looked taken aback but took her to an elevator and to what she assumed was his office.
He opened the door and he sat at his desk working on a laptop.
"Aarti, Pia" he said and got up.
"Am I your wife?"
"Do you remember?"
"Would I ask if I remember? Am I your wife?"
"Yes"
"For months you have been coming to the home and you have said nothing. Why? You knew how much I wanted to know. How confused I was. Why didn't you say anything?"
"Aarti ..." he came closer, he wanted to touch her.
"No don't touch me. Answer my questions."
"I wanted you to fall in love with me again. I wanted you to come back to me on your own. I didn't want it to be because I forced you."
"Your mother told me your wife left you. Why did I leave?"
"Aarti, let's go home. We can talk there."
She looked at his desk. There were several pictures of them. In one picture she was holding a baby and he stood beside her. They looked happy.
"Whose baby is that?" she asked looking at the picture.
"Ours."
She was shocked. She picked up the picture and stared at it intently.
"Where is my child?" but somehow she knew before he told her.
"He ... he passed away"
The tears were running down her eyes for this child that she didn't even remember.
"How?"
"It was a cot death. Not one could explain why?"
She sank down on the floor and cried. He let her cry. Finally her led her out of his office in a trance and took her home. She looked around. Still nothing looked familiar. G3-ma was so excited to see her but sad that she still couldn't remember.
He took her to their room. She looked around. This she recognised. Not because she remembered anything, but because she recognised it from her dreams. She knew that he was her husband but she still did not remember him. And he had a lot to explain. What did he do that was so terrible that she left him?
