Chaper 12 (Epilogue) - page 18
Aarti was so happy. She couldn't wait to tell him. She had suspected for a while now but finally the doctor had confirmed by blood test. She was 2 months pregnant. She had the report of her blood test with her. She wanted to do something romantic to reveal this good news to him. But she was too excited. She rushed straight from the doctor to his office. It was just on closing time as the staff was all on their way out. But she knew that he never left the office on time. No, Mr Scindiya, the workaholic, always worked late.
"Mrs. Scindiya. He is in his father's office. I will tell him you are here." His PA said but clearly she was also packing up.
"Don't worry about it. I know my way around. You go home, Asha." Aarti said.
"Good night, Ma'am." Asha replied smiling.
She made her way to her father in laws office. He would be happy at the news too she was sure. His office door was ajar and she stopped to compose herself. She knew that the Scindiya men were not overly fond of public displays of any kind. She was about to enter when she heard her father in law say.
"Finally we achieved what we set out to do. The legal processes has all been followed since your father in law and wife signed those shares over to you. Now finally we are the majority shareholders of Khuranna Engineering. Well done son. You can be very proud of yourself. We are now officially the biggest engineering firm in India."
"Thank you bauji."
"I can't believe that they were so easily convinced to sign over their shares."
"They trust me. And it's not like they won't still make money. I will make sure that the company runs profitably and they will get dividends. He trusted his daughter when she told him to go ahead with signing over the shares. And of course my wife trusts me completely."
His father chuckled.
"You were very good at making her believe that you love her and you got her to agree you to marry you quicker than I thought."
"It was easier than I thought too. But now it is done. We can relax. It will be smooth sailing from here. Our company's market share can only go up from here."
"And what about your wife?"
"What about her,bauji?"
"You married her to get the shares and now that we have them, what will you do. I know you are still seeing Arpita, will you go back to her permanently."
"I can't leave her now, Bauji. That would not be well accepted by the people of our society."
She couldn't listen to any more. He world came crashing down around her. She was shaking. She felt dizzy and leaned against the wall. The report that she was holding fell from her hands. Tears streaming down her cheeks. In a matter of minutes the happiest day of her life turned to the worst. Her life was falling apart. The man that she loved, her husband had married her under false pretences. He wanted her father's business, her inheritance, not her. She should have known that someone like him would never be interested in her. She should have known that there was an ulterior motive. Her whole life she was aware of people wanting to get close to her to get to her father's wealth. That is why she had very few friends and that is why she didn't trust easily. But he made her trust him. He made her love him. He made her marry him and now she was having his child. She had to get out of here. She couldn't face him now. She didn't know what to do. She had to think. She moved away from her spot and made her way out of the office.
She got into a taxi and she had him stop at a hotel that they were passing. She couldn't go home. "Home" she thought. Giving a scathing laugh. That was not her home. She was just there for a purpose. To steal her father's company. She was accepted as their bahu, but her dowry was much bigger than she had ever imagined. He had used her. He didn't love her. There was someone else in is life. She was so stupid. So,so stupid. She hated herself. She always prided herself in being able to read people well. But with him she couldn't have been more wrong. She gave him everything. Her heart and her body and now her birth right. And she gave it to him willingly.
Her thoughts went back 6 months ago when they met.
She was the only daughter of Vheer Khuranna, the owner of the biggest engineering firm in India. And she shared a special bond with her father. Her mother died when she was 10 years old and they only had each other. Her parents were married at 17. They went to college together, and they both stepped into senior rolls at her grandfather's company, both being qualified engineers. Her mother had a great career. They only had her 10 years later. They had struggled to have more children but that never happened. It was a love marriage and when her mother died, her father never even considered marrying someone else. She wasn't the most ladylike of girls, being raised by a man. She had to find out most things by default. She played hockey and cricket instead of ballet and netball. Her wardrobe consisted of jeans and shirts, with the odd traditional wear for religious occasions. And of course she wore slacks suits to the office and meetings. Her hair was always tied up in a ponytail. And she was never interested in makeup. She idolized her dad and wanted to follow in her parents footsteps. She worked hard to be just that. Always finishing top of her class.
When she was younger, she was either treated with disdain by the in-crowd due to her lack of interest in material things although she was easily the riches one there. She went to private schools and she did not really fit in. Sometimes people tried too hard to her friend because they knew who she was. Either way, she rarely made friends. The only friends she made were Mansi and Neelam that she had known since kindergarten. Both of them were fashion icons and they tried to make her the same, but despite their failures, they still loved her.
She never had a boyfriend. She was too busy crafting a career for herself. And she didn't want a career based on who her parents were but on her own abilities. She considered leaving the country to pursue her career but she couldn't leave her dad. She decided to take a position with the firm. She was good and she soon proved herself to all the doubters.
She was on holiday with Mansi and Neelam at a Mumbai Beach resort. They were sitting on the balcony of the restaurant enjoying breakfast when Mansi almost started hyperventilating.
"O M G, girls. I can't believe what I am seeing. Three of the hottest guys that I have ever seen has just come into the restaurant."
Neelam nearly had whiplash trying to see all this hotness.
"Wow, your right. They are all sooo hot." she said smiling their way and flicking her hair seductively.
"Aarti, check them out."
Aarti looked around casually just so that Mansi could be happy. As she turned around she caught the eye of one of them. He had the most amazing deep brown eyes that she had ever seen, but she looked away quickly as she was feeling herself drowning in those deep pools.
"Yes, beautiful Mansi. They all look like Greek gods." she said
"Sarcasm does not become you Sweety" Mansi said.
And throughout breakfast her friends were drooling over the hot guys. And when lunch was settled and the bill was settled that had to walk out past their table. Mansi and Neelam was in fine form, amusing Aarti. And they got the looks that they wanted from the guys. She didn't bother to look as she knew none of them would ever look at her. Mansi and Neelam were wearing shorts with bikini tops with the latest fashion bags and sandals and were perfectly groomed. She was wearing an old frumpy dress and bare feet. No makeup or bag and her hair was in a ponytail. She missed the glance she got from the one with the beautiful eyes.
They went back to their rooms. She checked her e-mail and she had a nap and the other two went to the beach.
Her friends came back all exited. They had met the hotties down at the beach and they invited them to a party at a nearby club.
"We have to get ready Aarti." Mansi said
"I'm not going."
"Why?"
"How long have you two known me?"
"20 years more or less." neelam said
"Have you even seem me in a club?"
"No, but there is a first time for everything."
"No. Besides, I have nothing to wear."
"That's not a problem. We have booked spa treatments, with hair and nails and everything. And there is a boutique in the hotel. Please Aarti, please. There is 3 of them and 3 of us. Just keep him company.
"Who?"
"The one that doesn't talk." said Mansi
"His name is Yash" said Neelam.
"Why must I keep him company?"
"Otherwise he will be the odd one out. And it will put a damper on our evening. Please Aaru, Please" Neelam pouted.
"Ok, Ok. But no spa."
"Yes, spa, Please Aaru, Please" Mansi pouted.
"Ok, ok. The things I wouldn't do for you crackpots."
"Love you Aaru" they said together and hugged her. And soon they were off to the spa. And on the way back to the boutique in the hotel to get outfits for the evening.
"I'm not leaving the room like this. How could I let you two witches talk me into this."
"You look awesome."
"I feel naked."
"You have a great body. You are rocking it that outfit. Look at yourself."
"I don't even recognise this person in the mirror."
She was wearing a short one shoulder Grecian dress with a chiffon flap giving it a soft feminine look. The top of the bodice was trimmed with gold and she was wearing gold earrings. She couldn't walk on heels so she was wearing flat Grecian sandals laced up to her mid-calf. Her hair was in a loose frizzy bun, with strands hanging down the back and sides.
"You look like a Greek goddess." Said Mansi
"Isn't if funny. This morning you said they look like Greek gods and now you look like a Greek goddess." said Neelam.
"Aarti jus glared at her."
Come ladies, we don't want to be late.
The guys were waiting outside the club for them, giving them appreciative glances.
"Hi ladies, Neelam I thought you said you are going to bring your friend from this morning, the one said."
"Yes, this is Aarti. Aarti, this is Aakash, Aaman and Yash."
"Namaste" she said still barely looking at them.
All three of the men looked at her with new appreciation and her friends saw this. Aakash and Aaman both vied for her attention and when they saw that she was really not interested, they reverted back to Mansi and Neelam. And soon the 4 were on the dance floor leaving Aarti and Yash at the table. As her friends said, he didn't talk much. She didn't say anything either. Just was just looking around awkwardly. Bit he was staring at her all the time. Finally she said:
"Please excuse me."
"Where are you going?"
"Back to the hotel."
"Why?"
"Because I want to" she said offhandedly but he was unfazed.
"Dance with me."
"No thank you."
"Yes, afterwards, I will take you back personally." He took her arm and took her the dance floor. She was too shocked to say or do anything but follow him.
The song was slow and he held on to her tightly. She had to admit, it felt nice to be so close to him. He smelt good, she liked the feel of him. At first she held herself rigid but soon she relaxed against him. Her head against his chest. His one arm was around her waist and the other was at the nape of her neck, softly caressing her there with his fingers. She enjoyed the feel of it.
"I will take you back now"
"Hmm." she said as if moving out of a trance.
"You wanted to go back to the hotel right."
She moved away from him embarrassed that she got so lost in him.
"Yes, but you don't have to go with me."
"Let's go." he said disregarding what she just said.
"It's only about a 10 minute walk, so can we walk instead of taking a cab,"
"Fine."
"So tell me about yourself, Aarti." he said as they were walking.
"There isn't much to tell."
"So tell me what there is to tell."
"I'm 24. I live in Bhopal with my father. I work in his company."
"What do you do?"
"A little bit of everything."
"I see. Why do I get the feeling that you are underplaying your position?"
"I don't know."
"What else?"
"What you are seeing now is not real. It's a faade. The make-up, the clothes, everything is not me. I am just plain. Mansi and Neelam insisted that I dress up."
"So why do you never dress up. Are you deliberately trying to hide your beauty?"
She laughed.
"What beauty? Neelam and Mansi are beautiful, not me."
He stopped and pulled her around to him. He moved a tendril of hair that swept across her face away. He looked intently into her eyes.
"Clothes and make up doesn't make anyone beautiful. You are or you are not. And you are beautiful, with or without make up. I noticed it even this morning."
She was shocked. They looked into each other's eyes for a long time and his lips came closer to hers. She suddenly came out of her trance and she turned away from him, taking his hand off her arm and she started walking briskly away. He followed her, grabbing her hand and holding onto it. She tried to get and hand out of his but he held on tighter as they continued walking. Eventually she relaxed and he entwined his fingers with hers.
"Do you want to ask me anything?"
"No"
"Fine I will tell you. I am 28. I live in Dehli. We are a joint family. I live with my parents. My elder brother is married and he and Bhabhi live there with their 2 children and my chote bhai live there too. I also work in the family business."
She didn't say anything.
"Is there someone in your life, like a boyfriend?"
"No."
"Good."
"Why is that good?"
"It would just complicate matters."
"What do you mean?"
"For our marriage."
She stopped. They were now in front of the hotel.
She removed her hand from his.
"You have known me for a matter of hours. How can you talk about marriage?"
"One thing you will soon learn about me, my future wife is that I am very decisive. I know what I want and I go after it. And right now I want you. I liked what I saw this morning. I was disappointed when you didn't come to the beach with your friends. I really wanted to see you. So I came especially to see you this evening. And now I am convinced."
"I won't learn anything about you. I am going back home in 2 days and we won't see each other again."
"So I have 2 days to convince you."
"Good night,"
"Aarti, meet me here tomorrow morning. I want to spend the day with you."
"I don't think so."
"I will wait for you here at 9 am. We can go for breakfast and bring a swimming costume."
"Sorry, but I can't."
"I will wait for you. Good night Aarti."
She turned around and left.
