Chapter 7 - Epilogue
They waited till her grandmother came home and he spent some time there and then they went home. His family wasn't aware of the storm that was going on in their lives and they were happy to keep it that way. But it was clear to the family that things had changed when they came back. Aarti was still trying to be the best bahu possible but Yash was all over her all the time.
As soon as he came home, she had to leave everything and join him in the bedroom. And they wouldn't come out until it was almost dinner time. This annoyed his mother and she often took Aarti to task when Yash wasn't around. And Aarti didn't talk back she just did as she was told. At first she tried to avoid Yash when he came home but he quickly put a stop to that. And he knew his mother well so he had a word with her about Aarti's duties.
She really wanted to work but she didn't want to upset her mother in law any further as she was already upset with her as Yash wouldn't allow her to help with housework when he was around. But she never stopped sketching when she had a moment to herself.
But working was taken off the table 2 months later when she found out she was pregnant. Even he mother in law was happy with her for a second. Yash was over the moon, if he hovered over her before, he was even more so now.
But she didn't enjoy the pregnancy. She was filled with anxiety. She started getting panic attacks much to her husband's concern. And it happened randomly, even in the middle of the night. She needed him more than ever. She had dreams that he would leave her that she would die, that he child would be left alone. She knew it was irrational but as much as she tried to stop it, she couldn't. Only Yash could calm her down. He even took her on a holiday but nothing helped. And as the pregnancy progressed it got more frequent and severe. Finally he had no alternative to get her professional help. She had obviously not dealt with her childhood issues. He was so worried about her health and the health of the baby.
She was about 6 months pregnant when she had another attack in the middle of the night.
"Yash, Yash wake up. Wake up.
"What is it?"
"I can't have this baby. You have to help me to get rid of it. I can't give birth to this baby. Please Yash. I need to get rid of it."
"Aarti calm down."
"No, you don't understand. I can't do this. What if something happens to you and me? Who will take care of the baby?"
"Nothing will happen to us Aarti. Please I need you to calm down, it is not good for the baby when you get so upset."
"Then I will kill myself with the baby."
She got up from the bed and ran for the balcony. He chased her and he could stop her in time. She broke down sobbing. But he was worried, what would happen if he was not around. So he started working from home and he spoke to her therapist. To no avail.
"Yash, I want my father. Please I want my father."
"I will call him to come over here. Just relax."
"Please quickly."
"Ok, please just relax.
Once her father reached her she embraced him.
"You're here. You're really here."
"Yes, you know I'm here Aarti. You family is with you now."
"Don't leave me again, please. Don't leave me."
"Shh. it's ok."
"I want to go to my mother's family."
"Absolutely not, said Yash."
"I want to Yash. I need to talk to them."
"Let her do it Yash. Maybe it's the closure she needs" said her father.
So they went there the next day. Aarti, Yash and her grandmother and father.
They knocked on the door and her niece Ishita answered the door.
"Ma, look who's here."
"I suppose you better come in."
"Namaste grandmother, uncle. How are you?"
"Pregnant I see said her grandmother. Don't think you can dump her back here now that she is pregnant."
Yash was so angry he wanted to lash out. His father in law touched his arm to calm him down."
"No grandmother, I asked to come here. I wanted you to see that I am happily married and I am going to have a baby. And I wanted you to introduce you to my father, I met him at my wedding. And here is my grandmother as well."
"So you are the one that left my sister pregnant!" her uncle snapped.
"No I didn't leave her pregnant. I didn't know about the child until I discovered her at my friend's wedding. If I had known where to find Rhadha I would have fetched. We were married,"
"Liar"
"I have the documents to prove it. You have accused and ill-treated my child all these years but for her sake I will leave you."
"Then what are you doing here?"
"Grandmother, uncle, please can we make amends. I want to forget about the past. I want my child to know all his family."
"Does your father know how you disgraced us by sleeping with this man before marriage?"
"You don't want to remind me of that incident, of how you a grown man beat up a young girl. You better stop talking about it, before I forget my promise to my wife." said Yash angrily.
You come into my house and threaten me?" said her uncle
"You came into my house, at my engagement and accused me and Aarti of things we didn't do and humiliated her in front of everybody. Which is worse"
"Please uncle. I just want us all to get along."
Her aunt came in finally.
"It didn't take you long to fall pregnant from your rich husband. Just like your mother."
Aarti's head shot up.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing" she tried to backtrack"
"Aunt, you knew my parents were married. How?"
Aarti lost it.
"Don't lie to me. Tell me the truth. How did you know? She went to her aunt and shook her. Tell me the truth! She demanded.
The rest of the family wanted to get to Aarti but Yash and her father stopped them and her uncle was too much of a coward to try anything with a man.
"Tell me. I will not let you go till you tell me."
"Ok. Ok. I will tell you."
Aarti let her go.
"She told me on her deathbed. She told me his name and where to find him. She also gave me some things to give to him so that he would know you are reakky his daughter."
"What did she give you?"
"An engagement ring and a mangalsutra and a wedding photo."
"Where is it? Where is it!?"
"Don't worry. I didn't sell it. I promise. I hid it away so I could give it to you. I will fetch it."
She left and came back with a box with the things that she mentioned.
Aarti opened it. She went through it and dropped on the floor crying. He grandmother sat down next to her and held her. She more than just cried. She wailed. She mourned the loss of her mother, of her childhood and her family. It was stolen by this woman, by these people. And now she was having a baby and because of them she was paralysed by fear. Yash had to hold it together. He wanted to cry with his wife but he had to keep an eye on these people.
When she was finished crying, she got up and faced her aunt.
"Why did you do this, why did you hide this from everyone."
"She ran away from home and came back pregnant. And then her daughter gets to live in luxury while my daughter had to live in poverty. I could not allow that." said her aunt with malice.
"So you rather allowed them to abuse me, beat me, and starve me. What kind of a person are you?"
She looked around the room at her maternal family and said.
"You are truly despicable people. You are hateful. My mother and I had the misfortune to be born of your blood. I came here today to try and make amends but actually now that I know what kind of people you are I don't want to have anything to do with you. My child will never know you. My name was never Aarti Sharma, my name was Aarti Vheer Singh and is now Aarti Yash Scindiya. There is no relationship between us. I don't want anything to do with you."
"Yash, do you have money on you?"
He took his wallet out. He had a few thousand on him as he was planning to pay a supplier later that day and he gave that to her."
"Father, do you have cash on you." He gave her a couple of hundred that he had.
She took off all her jewellery besides her engagement ring and mangalsutra and she threw it at them.
"There take this. This payback for the years of taking care of me. I'm sure it's more than you should get. The jewellery is probably worth more than your house. My debt to you is paid. You see grandmother, despite how you told me all the years that I am worthless and will never amount to anything, look where I am. I have a home and a family. In fact I am married into one of the most prestigious and richest families in India. And my husband would give me the world if he could, that is how much he loves me. My father comes to fetch and he takes me out for ice-cream and shopping even though I am not a child anymore and having a child of my own. My grandmother loves me. They paid a huge dowry for me. FOR ME, grandma. My father and grandmother have known me such a short time and they have shown me more love than you did in all the years that I have lived here. I am happy. I am blessed. In spite of you. I have love and acceptance from people that you are not even worthy to touch the feet of. But I don't even hate you for all you have done to me. Because I am not going to be like you. I am not going to let hatred hold me back in life. I have everything to live for and that is exactly what I will do. Good bye." She picked up the box with her mother's things and she walked out not looking back there ever again. Her father and grandmother followed her. Yash stayed.
"If I ever find any of you even near my wife. You won't be as lucky as were today." and he walked out.
After that day, she had no more anxiety attacks and both her and the baby were healthy and happy.
5 years later at a family dinner:
"Again!" said prateek. Bhaiya, don't you think there is enough Indians in the world. Do you want to populate it some more."
"My wife wants a whole cricket team AND WHAT MY WIFE WANTS MY WIFE GETS (the last part was chorused by the entire family) they were so used to him saying it.
" Yash, that's not true. This is the last one I promise." She wanted a big family and he could not say no to her. Ansh was 5, Palak 4, Payal 2 and now she was pregnant again.
"Thank goodness Prateek said.
"Well I love having all my grandchildren, if you get tired of them, they can come live with me, said her father."
"That's maybe not a bad idea, Bauji" Prateek said to his father."
Aarti pinched him. "You will miss them so much. You will come and fetch them." Prateek loved spending time with the kids.
"What I'd like to know is when they already have so many kids, where they find time to make more", said Aaman, naughtily
"Aaman" Aarti blushed.
"It's a valid question, Aarti" said her husband." I will answer it. She simply finds me irresistible and can't stay away from me" the whole family started to laugh and Aarti gave her husband a death stare."
"We will see about that tonight Mr. Scindiya, she whispered in his ear.
"He smiled" he wasn't worried. He knew what pregnancy did to her, so her threats were pretty much idle."
After giving her a grandson her mother in law mellowed towards Aarti and she put up with her son's demands on her time. She had even started a children's and maternity wear clothing line that was very successful and she was a great mother and she still did household chores where she could.
Prateek was now engaged and although Paradhi was a working, it was accepted as they could see that although Aarti was working, things in the house still ran fine. She even helped Vidhi with her kids so that she and Pankaj can have some time alone so she also had a one year old baby, Dheer.
He grandmother and father were with them often or they would go for supper at their house.
Aaman and Mansi had two of their own little darlings. And they spent a lot of time together as well. Aaman was the finance director at Scindiya Group of Companies.
And now she was pregnant with her last baby and he husband's love and passion for her hardly abated. She was happier than she ever thought she would be she thought as she was sitting at her laptop before bed.
"Come to bed now Baby"
"I'm coming."
"She snuggled up to him."
"Tired?"
"Mmm"
"Happy?"
"Very"
"I'm not. I haven't had my fill of you today."
"Yes my irresistible husband."
"You're not holding that against me are you."
"You can be lucky that I actually do find you irresistible."
"So?"
"So you are getting lucky tonight, again."
And she moved to lie on top of him.
"I love you so much darling" she said
"I love you more" he said as she started her sweet torture.
The End
