Chapter 6
She woke up and saw Yash sitting next to her.
"Yash" the man, Vheer Singh, was he real."
"Yes, beta I am real." her head spun around and she searched for the origin of the voice.
He came close to her. A look of adoration on his face.
"Father?" she said.
"Yes" he said and they hugged. Both of them crying.
"You are beautiful, just like your mother. I wish she had told me about you. I wish she didn't run away from me and we could have been a family." he had tears in his eyes.
"How did they treat you beta? Were you happy with your family?"
"It was fine" she said looking away from him.
"I can't believe that fate brought us together like this. That the daughter that I never knew I had would get married to one of my best friend's son's. I am so glad that I was at your wedding at least, seeing that I missed everything else. I must contact your family and thank them for looking after you all these years."
"No, father!" she said anxiously.
"Why not Aarti."
"Because, bauji, they are terrible people and they abused Aarti at every turn. But once again she wants to protect you from her reality. They treated her badly as she was an illegitimate child according to them."
"Is this true beta"
"It's over now, father. I just want to move on with my life and they are not part of it anymore. I have you now. I am so happy that I finally have a father and that I am not illegitimate. I can't wait to get to know you better."
"Me too."
There was a knock on the door. It was her mother in law.
"Yash, is Aarti ok. We need to go home to finish the rituals."
"Yes, Maji. I am fine."
"You don't mind do you Vheer?"
"Not at all. I have the rest of my life to get to know my daughter he smiled. Thank you G3 for accepting my daughter in your home. And please allow me to pay the dowry for her."
"It's not necessary." she said guiltily.
"I know it's after the fact but it will be my honour to do it, now that I have found her."
"If you want to, then it is fine."
Soon they left for home and Aarti was welcomed into the Scindiya home. After they completed all the rituals, it was time for Yash to carry his new bride to their room.
He put her down as soon as they reached the room. They were both really uncomfortable. Although they loved each other and they knew that they wanted each other but so much has happened that neither of them was ready for consummate their marriage.
After having their respective showers they went to bed. Both in their own thoughts. They both had hurt and pain to deal with. Just because she suddenly discovered that she had a father didn't mean that she suddenly had had self-confidence. She still felt unworthy of him. She felt that she would have been a better fit of the Dubeys. She missed them already. It hurt that they were not even at her wedding. She knew his parents did not really approve of their marriage and she wasn't sure what the fact that her father was of their class would mean. Her father was wealthy but she didn't grow up with money so she was intimidated by this family. She didn't know where she would fit into this family. She knew them slightly due to the years of friendship but she didn't know her place within the family. Vidhi had always been nice to her. She just seemed like the perfect bahu. How was she going to live up to that? And now on their wedding night he didn't even touch her. She felt so rejected by him. She had often dreamt of a wedding night with him and it was nothing like this. They were in the same bed, so close together but so far apart.
He was married to the love of his life but what did that mean. He had wanted her for so long and now it was their wedding night and both of them were pretending to sleep. Her constant rejection throughout the years had affected him more that he would ever admit to her. She had built a wall around herself and she still wasn't letting him in. He had to practically force her to marry him and he knew she wasn't happy to do it, even though she loved him. Why couldn't she just open up to him. He was prepared to give her everything she wanted, all of him but she didn't want it. She didn't want him. She wanted Prashant and his family. He overheard her talk to Mansi earlier and she told her that she was missing them and she so badly wanted to them to be at her wedding. She was so desperate for a family that she would even give up her love. He was tired of it, he was tired of running after her, grovelling for every bit of affection. He had decided that she wouldn't do it anymore. He would wait on her to come to him. And he was prepared for the fact that it might never happen. But only then would he know that she was really his. That he was accepted by her.
The next morning she got up early to do the rest of the rituals. And her in laws were very happy with what she prepared. He ate but he didn't say anything and there was no expression on his face. After breakfast he went to work.
Vidhi was her saving grace. She took her under her wing and helped her get acquainted with the running of the household. She was a bit bored, she really preferred her job but she knew that the Scindiya bahus were not allowed to work. And she had not been back to work since her uncle beat her anyway.
She also helped Vidhi with the 3 year old Vedhika and 1 year old Vendant. They absolutely adorable. She even bathed them and read Vedhika a story at bedtime. She couldn't wait to have children of her own. To have someone of her own. Her father was still a stranger to her and Yash was behaving like one. They weren't even friends anymore.
Her father had invited her to his house and introduced her to his family members 2 weeks after the wedding. Even the grandmother that despised her mother was so happy to meet her. She hugged her and cried. She spent time getting to know her family and found out despite being quite wealthy they were actually nice people. Her father had a brother and a sister. All of a sudden she had a new uncle and aunt and nieces and nephews. It was just before she left that her grandmother called her to her room.
"Beta, I want to apologise for my behaviour towards your mother. As a mother I was paranoid, I thought she was only after Vheer's money and I treated her very badly. Only after she left did I realise how much those two loved each other. And I could have had you in my life all this time."
"No grandmother, I am just happy found you now. And we can spend time together now."
"Yes and hopefully I can still see my great grandchildren. "She smiled.
"I have something to give you. I should have given it to your mother but now it goes to you. She gave her boxes of jewellery."
"Grandmother, I can't accept this."
"It is yours. So now take it, your husband is waiting for you. But you must come again very soon. Promise."
"I promise."
She went home happy. She was nervous before going but now she was happy. She felt a little more whole than when she woke up this morning. Her father phoned her every day and he hovered over her today to make sure everyone treated her right. He loved her even though he hardly knew her it was obvious to her and everyone else. She knew she stepped up a notch in the Scindiya family for being Vheer Singhs daughter and not an illegitimate child of a poor family. She just wished that their opinion of her did not depend on her family status.
"Aarti, you were happy today weren't you?" he asked as they were driving home.
"Yes, I am still happy. Thank you for taking me Yash."
"No thanks required. I am going away for 2 weeks and your father asked if you could stay there while I am gone."
"Where are you going?"
"I am going to London for a conference and some meetings."
"Oh" she said. She was disappointed that was leaving so quickly after their wedding. And after 2 weeks he still hasn't even tried to touch her or kiss her.
"So I will take you there when I leave next week. It will be nice for you to get to know them better."
"And Ma & bauji. Are they ok with it?"
"I'm sure they will be. I will talk to them"
He needed to get away. The conference had been booked a long time ago but he could have cancelled or sent Prateek but he wanted to go. He needed to go. It was getting harder and harder to sleep next to her without touching her.
And she didn't care. They behaved like strangers to each other. It was even worse than when they pretended to be just friends.
A week later they were driving to her father's house to drop her off.
"Aarti, if you like it at you fathers house, you can stay there. You don't have to be obligated to come back" he said while driving. His heart broke as he spoke but he needed to give her the option. The happiest he had seen her since their marriage, no since that disastrous weekend, was when she was with her family.
She was shocked. She couldn't understand what he was saying. He had always said her loved her and wanted to marry her and now he told her she doesn't have to come home to him when he came back from London. Maybe he didn't love her, maybe he just felt sorry for and now that she had a family she didn't feel the need to take of her anymore. He heart was shattered.
"Is that what you want Yash? For me to stay with them and not to come back to you"
"I want you to be happy Aarti and you are happy with them."
"I'll do whatever you say Yash. You don't have to feel obligated to me either. I told you that many times."
He was angry now.
"Yes, yes you have. You would rather have had the Dubeys in your life than me. I know that. You would rather have had them looking after. You would rather have had them as your family. I should have let you marry Prashant. I thought ... oh it doesn't matter what I thought. Go to your family. I think after all that it is better if you stay there. I will talk to your father. I will bring your dowry back and we can have the marriage annulled. Maybe the Dubey's will take you back."
"Yash. You want to annul the marriage?"
"Yes, that's the best for both of us."
"But ... but we not even married for a month? Did I do something wrong?"
"No, Aarti. You did nothing wrong. You just did ... nothing. You did nothing.
This relationship with you is too hard Aarti. I thought marrying you would be the answer but it's not. You do what makes you happy. Be with your family, be with Pashant and his family. It's apparent that I can't give you what you want, I can't make you happy."
"And you think annulling the marriage will make me happy? Once again Yash, I will have to face shame. I lived in shame as an illegitimate child, I was married in shame for doing something I wasn't guilty of at the time, but was guilty of before and now my husband leaves me with a family I hardly know after less than a month of marriage. I should be used to it by now shouldn't I? By now it shouldn't hurt anymore. I am a fool to expect a normal life, love happiness. It's clearly not for me. And Yash Scindiya, I will never forgive you for this. Never. I told you we shouldn't get married, you insisted. Yes you are right. I love Ma Bauji like my own parents. I might not be in love with Prashnat, but I did love him and he offered to marry me and you stopped him. I could have been happy with them. You married me and now you discarding me like an old rag because it's too hard for you. You should try living my life and then tell me what's hard. I tell you what, you keep the dowry for the 3 weeks of marriage that you have had to put up with me. And don't you show your face near me again. Ever!"
"Aarti" He had already stopped the car as they reached her father's house.
"She opened the door and started walking."
"Aarti!" he called.
Her father and grandmother came out.
"Namaste father, grandmother. My husband just told me that he wants to annul the marriage. Please can I stay here till I find a place of my own?"
"Yash?" her father said concerned.
"Bauji, I need to talk to Aarti. She is being irrational. I just meant ..."
"Please Yash, you told me that you will bring the dowry back and that you will annul the marriage. You told me to marry Prashant. What else could that mean? Just leave Yash. Go to London and when you come back, we will have the marriage annulled."
"Come inside Beta." her grandmother said and put her arms around her and led her inside.
"I'm so sorry for all this drama."
"We are you family and this your home. Please don't apologise. You can stay here as long as you want. Forever if need be" she broke down and cried in her grandmothers arms.
"Bauji, please. I need to talk to Aarti. That's not what I meant. I spoke out of anger and frustration. I don't want an annulment either but I can't seem to make her happy. I only want to make her happy. I love her. Please believe me." he was not ashamed to cry in front of his new father in law.
"Son, I can see that you love my daughter very much, but I think too much has been said today. She won't be ready to listen to you now. Give her time and space and when you come back from your trip, you come and speak to her. I will look after her for you till then."
"Maybe I should cancel my trip."
"No, it will be better if you go. If you are here you won't be able to give her the time she needs. I can see how desperate you are for her. I am on your side here. As soon as you come back we will sort this out. I know what it is to have the love of your life and lose it. My daughter is very wounded and she needs a lot of help and healing before she can open up and love you back the way you need her too. You've waited a long time for her, but if you want her to remain in your life, you are going to have even more patience."
"She might not take me back after this."
"She loves you that is why she reacted like that. You hurt her but that's marriage. You don't give up after the first fight. I won't let either of you do that. Go now. Call me when you reach there just to let me know you're safe."
"Ok, Bauji. Goodbye."
She cried for most of that first week. And she talked. She told her father and grandmother of the abuse that she had endured throughout her life with her mother's family. Her grandmother felt even worse. But Aarti needed her now too and she would be there for her now. So she listened and comforted. Mansi and Aaman visited her and she cried with them too.
Shortly after their visit he called Yash.
"What the hell is going on your head Yash! How can you tell Aarti that you want the marriage annulled? She is devastated. What's wrong with you?"
"I don't know Aaman. She drives me insane. I lashed out in anger. She is so cold and distant to me. I love her so much. And now because of my stupidity, I stand the risk of losing her for good. "
"You better get your ass back here make amends to her. You know she has no sense of self-worth and now it's even taken a further dive. You have your work cut out for you when you get back pal."
"I know Aaman. I know." he sighed.
He was far away from her and she was the only thing on his mind. At was with great difficulty that he tried to concentrate on the speakers at the conference and his meetings. At least he was in contact with his father in law the whole time. He was so glad when the 2 weeks were up. He couldn't wait to see her.
She felt like she was home. Like she was with family. She had told them more things that she have ever told anybody. Only Aaman knew more about her and that is only because he was like family. No matter how much she cried or moped around, her father and grandmother had patience with her. They held and encouraged her. Even her new nieces came and took her out for a day of shopping and lunch. She finally stopped crying. The two weeks were up and she wondered how soon it would take for him to get the annulment done. She was home alone, besides the servants, as her father has finally started going to the office again and her grandmother had gone out with her friends.
She was sitting in her bedroom watching a movie with her sketchpad. She knew she wasn't working but it didn't stop her from doing her designs. She heard the door close and lock and looked up.
"Yash, what are you doing here? And why are you locking the door?" she said getting off the bed.
"Because I want privacy." he said walking towards her slowly.
"How far is the annulment?" she said stepping backwards.
"It's not happening"
"Why not?"
"Because after today we won't be able to annul the marriage." he said.
She stumbled over her own shoes that discarded on the floor. Luckily he was close enough to catch her. She was in his arm and their eyes met."
"What do you mean?" she whispered hoarsely.
"Let me show you."
He brought his lips down to hers and kissed her. She tried to push him but he was too strong and she wasn't really trying too hard. Her senses had taken over. She responded to his kiss. He moved her towards the bed and sat her down on it without breaking the kiss. Eventually he broke the kiss when they were both breathless. She was wearing a t-shirt and sweat pants.
"Thanks for wearing things that's easy to remove" he said.
"No Yash." she whispered again.
He put his hand under her t-shirt and started kissing her in her neck, by the time he lifted her t-shirt over her head she willingly lifted her arms to help him. He unclipped her bra and with his mouth he rained down sweet torture. He pushed her down on the bed. And he pulled off her he pants and underwear and she was fully naked.
"You are so gorgeous" he said gazing adoringly at her body.
She was embarrassed.
He started kissing her again.
"It's your turn now. I want you to undress me."
"I can't do that."
"Yes, you can. I am your husband. I belong to you. I know you want me Aarti. Show me how much."
"I can't."
"Then I will keep you locked up in this room until you family comes home. How will you explain that?" He was not averse to using threats.
"You wouldn't!"
"Test me." She saw in his eyes that he was serious and she had no choice but to start.
With shaky fingers, she started to unbutton his shirt. As his muscular chest became more and more exposed, she became more and more aroused, she wanted to touch it but she didn't. She had touched it before that first night but this was different. By the time she had touched him, she was already so lost she couldn't control herself. He did everything that night. But his expectation was different now.
"Touch me Aarti" He could see her hesitation. My body is yours to touch and to love. She touched his chest, rubbing her hands over his hard torso. She fingered his nipples and bent down to suck it.
"Oh baby" he moaned.
She then moved her hands to his belt and loosened it and unzipped it. He lifted slightly so she could remove his bottoms. She gasped when she saw his erect manhood. This time he didn't have to tell her to touch him. She put both hands around it and just explored him. He was moaning in pleasure. She brought her mouth down on him. He didn't expect her to be so bold just yet but he was incredibly pleased.
The more her writhed and moaned the more vigorous she became.
"Stop baby. Stop."
Finally she lifted her mouth off him.
"Why, don't you like it?"
"I love it, but it's making me crazy, I won't be able to last long if you continue."
"I like that I make you crazy."
He chuckled.
"There is another way you can make me crazy, in fact the craziest."
"What"
He moved her to where he wanted her and guided himself inside her.
She screamed out his name as she felt him enter her.
"Make love to me baby."
"I don't know how. And what if I am not good at it."
"Aarti, do you love me?"
"Yes."
"Then you will make love to me better than anyone else. Prove to me that you love me Aarti."
And she started to move. Her insecurities disappearing like mist as love and passion took over. He was ready for release almost immediately but he held on till she had her fill. And when she was reached her climax so did he. Both of them confessing their love for each other till they lay spent with her still on top of him.
She buried her head in his chest, embarrassed at everything she had done.
"And now love, are you shy."
She just nodded in his chest.
"How sweet, one moment a hot sexy innovative lover and the next a shy little girl. I have the best of both worlds."
"Stop it Yash. You're embarrassing me." she said, still her head had not been lifted.
"Look at me Aarti. Look at me."
She lifted her head and looked at him.
"I love you and will never let you go again. Never ever. You are mine and I am yours. You don't have to be embarrassed for loving me, because it makes me your very happy satisfied husband. I want to make you happy. Please allow me to?"
She had tears in her eyes now.
"It's hard for me to accept love Yash. Most of my life was spent being despised and hurt. I know you love me but I keep waiting for you to change your mind, to realise that I am not good enough for you."
"Aarti, I realise that but you have to talk to me. You have to let me in. You have hurt me too. Do you know the pain I felt every time I poured my love and desire out to you and you rejected me, for Arpita, for Prashant, because of your own insecurities. You broke my heart Aarti. I wanted you to come to me, to show your love for me and I waited when we got married, but you never did. I felt rejected, Aarti.
She couldn't believe that he felt that way. That he could feel rejected by her. That she could cause him so much pain. That she has such an impact on him. For the first time she realised the impact of her actions on him and the extent of his love for her.
"Oh Yash, sweetheart I am, so sorry. I am so sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I never want to hurt you. I love you so much. Please, please forgive me."
"Aarti, there is nothing to forgive. But please just say you will come home. Please, I can't bear to be without you anymore. Please give me a chance to make you happy."
"I'm happy now. I love you." She said and started to kiss him.
"Now it's your chance to prove your love to me." she said
"My pleasure, excuse the pun. And after I will help you pack your bags, tonight I want to love you in our own bed" he said as he flipped her over onto her back and showed exactly how much he loves her and then some.
