Part Five
Aarti was asleep when she heard a lot commotion outside her room. She immediately got up and dashed out of the room thinking the worst only to be greeted with the sight of Prashant in her house. The situation in the house turned more tense when her brother Prateik grabbed Prashant's shirt and tried to push him out of the house. The rest of them tried to separate the two guys before this altercation possibly turned into a major fight. Aarti's father, Dubey warned him to stay away, for a while he was defiant then he couldn't stand looking at Prashant's face he left. When Dubey put an arm on Prashant's shoulder and asked him to sit, her mother Shoba lost her cool.
"The one that ruin your daughter's life, you are giving him all the respect," Shobha said angrily.
"Prashant came to see me a few days earlier, he said he wants to make amends and wants to start a new life with Aarti," Dubey said obvious about the reason Prashant's was there.
After a pause he continued, "I want to see Aarti happy again, how can I say no?"
Shobha was disgusted with the whole idea and went to the kitchen, Aarti followed her. Without turning to face Aarti she said, "Your father has gone mad, how could he easily forget what we want through with your divorce?"
"You were not married even a year, he was already having an affair with another woman," she continued.
"Aarti hugged her from behind and rested her head on her shoulder. Later she said, "Maybe he really wants to change."
"If he says he is changed can we believe him?" Shobha asked in doubt.
"A leopard can't change its spots," Prateik said who appeared out of sudden.
Clearly the house was divided with Dubey favouring Prashant, and Shobha together with Prateik never for one second believed Prashant. Meanwhile for Aarti this was like walking on egg-shells, it is a life altering decision if not threaded carefully could be disastrous. However Prashant's charm and persuasion worked like magic on her. He lavished flowers, gifts and compliments on her, she slowly started to melt.
Prashant was a frequent visitor to Aarti's house much to the chagrin of her mother and brother. The only person who rejoiced in their reunion was her father, he was impatient for them to remarry and urged them continuously on this matter. Aarti was smitten by Prashant's attention and care that she started dreaming having a blissful life again which somehow had alluded her earlier, "maybe this time we could make it work," she reflected.
One day Aarti had a another kind of rude shock when she received a call from Vidhi and she was crying on the other end. Her voice was cracking and she could barely make out the words. She immediately rushed to her place and upon seeing Aarti, Vidhi hugged her and cried loudly. Her mother filled in the details.
"Pankaj's family broke the engagement," she said on the verge of tears.
"Why? I thought everything was good. What happened?" Aarti asked astonished.
Vidhi still crying answered her, "They were making all kind of demands, bauji tried his best but nothing was good enough for them. When we send them things, they just returned them to us asking us more expensive stuff."
Aarti consoled her and then asked, "What does Pankaj say? I'm sure he will not agree to this. Talk to him Vidhi, find a middle ground."
Vidhi was looking hopeful but her mother shot it down saying, "Pankaj hasn't called her at all."
"I told Vidhi's bauji not to look for rishta with rich family. He didn't listen and we are in this situation today. What is going to happen with my Vidhi?"
Poor..poor.. Vidhi, Aarti never expected things will turn this way. She observed Pankaj and Vidhi many times and she was quite sure he really loved her yet he is not fighting for his love. "Was his love so weak?" The next few days she often went to Vidhi's place to cheer her up and she took her along when she went out with Prashant. During one of these outings they accidently met Pankaj, Yash and Ishita. It was the most awkward meeting for everyone especially Pankaj and Vidhi. Yash glared at Prashant and his anger was compounded when he noticed him holding Aarthi's hand. The two parties parted way, after the brief encounter leaving Vidhi more distraught than ever.
Aarti had her hands full juggling her time between Prashant and Vidhi both demanding equal amount of attention. Perhaps it was universally true when one part of your life is ok the other part falls apart. Although she could have left Vidhi to deal with her broken heart on her own, she didn't falter to give her the shoulder to cry on because she had been there during her hard times. She did have to bear some amount of grumbling from Prashant when certain days she chose not to meet him and went to Vidhi's place.
While Aarti was nursing Vidhi, she felt certain relief that Prashant was becoming a true partner the one Aarti had always wanted, even before their separation he was always fun to be with, playful and teasing. The only department he lacked was loyalty and Aarti finally believed he changed for good. All that came crashing down one day, the illusion she built all was destroyed. She dropped unexpectedly at his place to give him a surprise, it turned out he was with another woman at the time. Aarti was crushed yet Prashant still try to buy his way out.
"Aarti... I'm sorry. It was a moment of weakness, it was only this time," he tried justifying.
"Please give another chance. I'll do anything to make it up to you."
"I can't believe I let you in my life to be humiliated one more time," she said in a loud voice.
"Stupid me," she added and hit her forehead.
Aarti ran from the place, she didn't bother to stop any passing auto and walked aimlessly. Tears rolled from her eyes continuously and she realised she was out for hours. At last she went back, everyone looked trouble because she was so late and felt relieved seeing her. Aarti couldn't hold it anymore, she cried in her mother's arms. Shobha knew what was wrong, she kind of expected it but still it hurt to see Aarti like this. Rarely are things as bad it seems, a fact Aarti will realise with time.
note : I know this part is boring because it is about Prashant & Aarti.
