I agree with the 1st option. He feels quilty that he could not save Arpita's belongings which was his life. He is feeling even more guilty when he sees those pictures, it might be haunting him.

I think it's option 2. After hearing his mom taunt Aarti and humiliate her in front of everyone, he realizes how his past is affecting his future, and also remembers that he almost picked Arpita over Aarti, and can't forgive himself for that.
