That was a surprise...for half an hour tried fiddling it ...and i could manage wen the little finger's were loose...does that mean that children can separate the couple ....
Pls find something on Mangalsutra too !!

I have heard a different explanation. The ring symbolises the circle of life. It's the only shape that doesn't have a beginning point. The artery that runs along your ring finger also runs through your heart. Hence the ring on fourth finger.

The story I have heard about Mangalsutra is that it really was not a part of the religious tradition centuries ago. The very poor wear yellow or red threads (in the south) to this day to let the world know she is a married woman so she will be given that due respect and not approached with prospective alliances from guys or his families.

Over the years gold and other precious gems and metals were added to the mangalsutra as a way of parents providing the girl with some source of security for her future. It keeps the sasural from taking it away from her bec' there is a significance attached to it. The girl wears it as long as her spouse is alive and that puts the fear of God in the sasural from forcibly taking it from the girl. But there are a few who don't care and take it anyways. But the idea has merit. We hear such stories in our culture that surprises us.
