History says Nand Nandini fell in love with Chandragupta Maurya but he rejected her. Chanakya made him marry her as she had no one left and she was auspicious for his dynasty. Other sources say Nanda lineage died entirely so its an assumptions Nandini couldn't conceive. Again it's only an assumption. Megasthenes writes Chandragupta had many children. Mahavansh Tika and Burmese Buddhist legends calls mother of Bindusara of Mauryan lineage.

Kings usually loved whosoever they liked but many intelligent kings like CGM used to take tests of queens to check their loyalty. Chanakya always took main Queen's tests to check if she were thinking of betraying the king. That's why not Nandini but Durdhara was made Chief Queen as she was from his own family and a commoner so she could easily be loyal to him. As she was a commoner she did not understand she wasn't supposed to eat King's food a fact Nandini would definitely know. 😒 Chanakya also took Helena's tests and found her stubbornly childish and difficult to control. That is why Helena was never Chief Queen and also because she was a Yavana. No crown princes of the dynasty were born from Yavanas, atleast not the first three ones.
