Aruna Bahuguna to become first woman chief of National Police Academy

New Delhi: National Police Academy, the Hyderabad-based alma mater for IPS officers in the country, could soon get a woman chief for the first time in its history. Aruna Bahuguna, a 1979-batch IPS officer, is tipped to be appointed as the new director of the 65-year-old institution, also known as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), which is tasked with the training of police leaders. President Pranab Mukherjee inspecting the Guard of Honour at the Dikshant Parade of the Indian Police Service Probationers of 2012 Batch ,at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, in Hyderabad on 05 November 2013. Image courtesy PIB Bahuguna (56), who belongs to the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is at present posted as the Special Director General in the country's largest paramilitary force, CRPF, at its headquarters in the national capital. The orders for Bahuguna's appointment as the new director of the academy would be issued soon, sources said. The officer, who has served in various positions with Andhra Pradesh police, also holds the distinction of being the first woman SDG in CRPF. She is the second-in-command of the 3 lakh strong force, after the DG. The post of NPA Director fell vacant after incumbent Subhas Goswami was last month appointed as the DG of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Reputed police officers like Sankar Sen, Trinath Mishra and K Vijay Kumar have earlier headed the NPA. Once appointed, Bahuguna would be the 28th boss of the academy. The high-level board of the NPA comprises senior civil servants, police officers and eminent educationists as its members and is headed by the Union home secretary.

Training

The selected candidates are then sent for a rigorous training in Missouri which lasts for almost 1 year. A part of training also takes part in Andhra Pradesh. They are trained in Indian penal codes, special laws, criminology etc. The officers also have to undergo physical training while they are trained in theoretical subjects.

Posting

Once the new officers complete their training, they are allotted state cadre which means that they have to work within the state.. The cadre system assign a state to each officer where he has to work. Being a central service, candidate can get a cadre from a different state than which they belong too. The trained officer are posted as Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) which is a Class 1 position. Most of the officer can expect to retire as ADGP (Addl. Director General of Police) or DGP (Director General of Police) as the promotion are mostly based on the seniority. An IPS officer can also go for deputation to central government posts.

came across this and felt to share it
if you notice in the training procedure
its not only physical training but other training like penal codes special law criminology

what if sandy is weak in physical trianing
she may shine in other aspects

failing in physical training is not the end of IPS

I think we all know what the real world IPS is like. Hope DABH-IPS will try to be a bit more real. These women made it to the top with their own stories of sacrifice and grit. Plenty of drama in real life too.

I have heard B Sandhya speak. She has come to my cousin's annual day function last year. She is a very down to earth person and she spoke a lot of real life incidents on various women. Some interesting real cases she handled. It was really an inspirational speech and I would never forget it Another lady IPS officer I had come across is Sreelekha IPS. First lady IPS in Kerala who completed silver jubilee in services recently. It was a pleasure to listen to her 😃
Sreelekha shared incidents when the male officers refusing to salute her even got transfer as it was so demeaning for them to salute a woman. She says things are not that hard for woman IPS officers these days.
