The first weekend of August 2025 saw two very different films locking horns at the box office, Son of Sardaar 2, a massy comedy led by Ajay Devgn, and Dhadak 2, a bold romantic drama fronted by Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. While both films came in with strong buzz and star power, their box office journeys have taken distinctly different turns.
Son of Sardaar 2, which hit cinemas on August 1, has emerged as the clear frontrunner in terms of footfalls and figures. The film opened with a promising Rs 7.5 crore on Day 1, followed by a steady climb over the weekend with Rs 8.25 crore on Saturday and Rs 9 crore on Sunday. With a total of Rs 24.75 crore in its opening weekend, the film has found its audience, especially in single screens and tier-2 towns. Despite mixed reviews from critics, its punchline-heavy storytelling and Ajay Devgn’s return in full comic form have struck a chord with the masses.

Directed by Shazia Iqbal, the film has been appreciated for its fresh narrative, raw emotional tone, and standout performances by Siddhant and Triptii. However, in terms of box office pull, the film has not translated love into large numbers. With Rs 4.31 crore on Friday, Rs 4.78 crore on Saturday, and Rs 5.04 crore on Sunday, Dhadak 2 wrapped up its first weekend with Rs 14.13 crore.
Several factors have affected its performance, including the ongoing success of Saiyaara and the devotional storm created by Mahavatar Narsimha. However, trade experts believe the film may still find its legs through strong weekday holds and positive chatter on social media.
In the end, it’s a tale of contrasts, Son of Sardaar 2 riding on nostalgia and humour, while Dhadak 2 banks on emotional depth and fresh storytelling. The coming week will decide whether the romantic drama can pick up steam or if the comic sequel continues its steady march.
