BANGALORE: Katrina Kaif, the most Googled star in India, was discharged on Thursday from Breach Candy Hospital after undergoing a minor surgery. While Katrina's spokesperson said that the "minor surgical procedure" was for "low haemoglobin levels", doctors are bewildered at the claim.

Any surgeon worth his salt will desist from performing a surgery when the heamoglobin levels are low. In any case, doctors prefer iron supplements or some other medicines to correct the level.

Some media reports say that Katrina underwent surgery for chocolate cyst', a type of endometriosis. If that is indeed true, Bollywood needs to do a reality check.

Most gynaecologists will tell you, in a lighter vein of course, that this is nature's way of telling you to settle down and start a family.

Endometriosis is a condition commonly seen in the child-bearing age group. Tissue that is normally supposed to grow only in a woman's uterus starts growing elsewhere in the abdominal cavity - ovaries, fallopian tubes or the surrounding area. Funnily, these tissues that spread out of the uterus, behave exactly like the ones within the uterus - they respond to the monthly periods - thus causing more bleeding than usual. Growing elsewhere they also cause pain, which is generally assumed to be menstrual cramps and ignored until finally the pain is so unbearable that it needs a doctor's intervention. Irregular periods or heavy bleeding accompanied by pain, sometimes a lot, are generally reported in patients who are diagnosed with the condition.

And why exactly is it called a chocolate cyst? Endometriosis may invade the ovary, producing blood filled cysts called endometriomas'.

With time, the blood darkens to a deep, reddish brown or tarry color, giving rise to the description "chocolate cyst".

These may be smaller than a pea or larger than a grapefruit.

Most gynaecologists' suggestion after surgical removal of the cyst would be to conceive as fast as possible. Else, there is a very real chance that the condition may recur and severe complications may lead to the only option available -- removal of the uterus.

The website of Dr Malpani Infertility clinic states that post surgery, one of the first medical options is hormone medication', which s i m u l a t e s pregnancy or menopause, two natural conditions known to inhibit the condition.

At this point, a disclaimer is necessary: Not all women with endometriosis face such severe risks and several hundred who are operated upon have gone on to face no trouble at all giving birth at a later stage in life.
