Chapter 2
The next morning Asad woke up to a warm feeling. He opened his eyes and smiled at the sight that greeted him. He saw Zoya sleeping in his arms. He smiled and moved his hand towards Zoya's face to caress her cheek. Her skin felt so smooth that he couldn't stop and kept caressing her cheek. Zoya woke up feeling something on her cheek. She opened her eyes and smiled at Asad and wished him Good Morning. As soon as Asad heard her speak he realized it was not one of his everyday hallucinations of seeing Zoya next to him in his arms but it actually was her. Zoya saw his expression change and realization dawned on them that they did wake up in each other's arms. They got off the bed as if it was on fire and felt awkward due to the sudden closeness. Mumbling a soft sorry Zoya ran to her room. Asad looked at the closed door thinking how they ended up in this position. Remembering their position a small smile spread on his lips. He was in awe of Zoya as he realized that she blindly trusted him and did not hesitate to be with him all night when he needed her, when he thought he was all alone and she would also leave him and go, she stayed with him. She showered him with all the love and understanding possible. Zoya did this for him and he felt his heart swell with love for her. He wanted to go to her room and embrace her in a tight hug, never letting her go but he knew he couldn't do that as she might misunderstand his actions. Moreover it would not be appropriate after the position they woke up in. "I Love You Zoya" he whisper to himself. He smiled and went to his washroom to get ready for the day. Today he needed to start afresh and he promised himself that that was exactly what he was going to do, with her, his musibat magnet, his Love, his Ms.Farookhi, his Zoya.
On the other side of the corridor Zoya was breathing heavily thinking about how she woke up in his arms. A soft blush crept up on her cheeks and she kept her hand against her chest where her heart was thumping at a speed she didn't know it could reach. She whispered a soft "I Love You Asad" and took a deep breath to calm her heart and nerves. She realized she did love Asad to this extent that it didn't seem wrong to her to spend the night in his room, not like they did anything wrong or inappropriate, but she had been with him because she knew how vulnerable he had been the night before and how it had broken her heart to see him in that state. Her eyes pricked with tears remembering Asad's condition. She quickly shrugged that feeling and went to her washroom to get ready for the day. Today was going to be the day when they would start their lives on a fresh page and would be with each other forever.
Breakfast was a silent affair. Asad was his usual self with limited talking but he noticed that Zoya was very quiet and was mostly playing with her food. They stole glances at each other feeling awkward about the situation they were in.
"Ms.Faroohki. Why are you not eating?"
"Um...nothing, Mr.Khan. I'am eating just that..."
Zoya couldn't finish the sentence but Asad understood what she wanted to say. He held her hand and squeezed it a little making her look at him. "It's ok Zoya. We didn't do anything. We both are well aware of what our limits are and I promise you we will never do anything that will go against the upbringing that we received. It makes no difference that we live in this house alone, we know the difference between right and wrong and we know where to draw a line in our relationship. Trust me Zoya we have not done anything inappropriate." With that a smile spread on her face and she nodded her head.
Asad and Zoya spent the next few days trying to gather what remained of their lives, supporting each other in every way possible and just being there for each other. Asad was completely broken and would hardly go to office. He worked from home and spent whatever time that was free with Zoya. Zoya on the other hand understood his situation and would always be there for him. There were nights when the two would just sit on their bench holding hands and talking. These were the times Asad loved the most. Zoya would just be with him making him feel loved. She knew that Asad was still very broken from within and he still pinned for his mother. But she dreaded the day that was tomorrow. It was Dilshaad's birthday the next day. How she wished she could stop time so that no more hurt could make its way to him. How she wished she could make him forget tomorrows date or keep him so busy that he would not realize. But she knew better. Even though Asad looked all calm on the outside, there was a war he was fighting within. She could see it in his eyes. He wanted to be with his mother on her special day but couldn't be. He was fighting a losing battle within which was breaking him inside out.
The next morning Zoya took special care not to bother him too much as she knew he felt very hurt. She noticed him eying his phone every few minutes all day. He would even pick his phone stare at it for a few seconds and then keep it back. Zoya had tears in her eyes watching him fight himself, she knew he wanted to call his Ammi but his anger and ego didn't allow him to do so. Zoya walked in to his room and handed him his favorite black and bitter coffee. She sat next to him, held his hand and said "Mr.Khan, why don't you call Phoophi up and wish her? I know you want to." Asad looked at her in disbelief trying to understand how could she know what he'd been thinking. She smiled at him "I've been watching you all day..." Asad looked at her and smiled. He gave her a side hug and did as she told him.
"Ammi..."
"Asad..."
"Happy Birthday Ammi..."
Dilshaad replied with a smile "Thank you Beta"
"Ammi... Aap...Aap vapas ka baa rahi hain... mein aapko bahut miss karta hoon Ammi"
Dilshaad didn't reply but closed her eyes and tears flowed down her cheeks. She could hear it in his voice how much he was missing her she could hear the vulnerability in his voice.
Asad could hear her sniffles "Ammi??? Aap sun rahi hain naa?"
"Asad mein... Mein abhi vapas nahi aa sakti. Tumhare Abu ki tabiyat abhi theek nahi hai. Mujhe kuch din aur yahan rehna hoga"
Asad couldn't hold on any more and disconnected the call and the tears he had been holding in for so many days just flowed down his cheeks. Zoya was concerned and placed her hand on his asking him what happened. Without uttering a word Asad crashed into Zoya taking her by surprise. Asad cried in her arms and between sobs told Zoya what Dilshaad said.
"Ammi refused to come back Zoya. She feels that Mr.Rashid Ahmed Khan is still not well enough and she wants to stay with him and... And not me"
Asad held on to Zoya as tightly as he could. The insecurities and helplessness made it difficult for him to hold on to his emotions any longer. He pulled her closer to himself and nuzzled into her neck and cried. Zoya could feel his strong arms squeezing her to him and realized how much pain he was going through. She wrapped him in her arms and pulled him closer to herself rubbing his back to calm him down.
Even though Asad had calmed down they didn't let go of each other. He still felt insecure and didn't want to let go of the only person who could make him feel loved. He looked into Zoya's eyes with so much love, care and passion that she couldn't hold his gaze and looked down. Asad held her close to himself and wanted to stay like that forever. They both could feel themselves drowning in their emotions and it was becoming difficult for them to pull apart. Zoya moved her head up to look at him and accidentally brushed her lips on his neck. A soft moan escaped Asads mouth and he could feel Zoya's arms tighten around his waist. He understood that it was not just him, but she was also feeling the pull within. Gently Asad nudged her chin up so she could look at him. Asad saw care, love and desire in her eyes. With that he dipped his head and softly kissed Zoya on her lips. Zoya closed her eyes and sighed against his lips. Asad took the lead and pressed his lips firmly against hers and slowly deepened the kiss. Zoya gave into his demands and responded with equal passion as he displayed in their first kiss. Breaking apart after some time Zoya felt conscious under his intense gaze and got up to leave his room but felt him pull her back. She looked at him with confusion and saw his eyes pleading her not to go. Neither said a word and she sat down beside him. Asad pulled her in another passionate hug and whispered "Please don't leave me Zoya... Please don't go. I need you." Zoya moved back and held his face in her palms "I'm not going anywhere, I'm here with you." Asad closed his eyes and with tears streaming down his face said "I want to feel loved Zoya, I want you...because I know only you can make me feel loved." Zoya looked at him and didn't understand how to respond to him. Asad looked at her and bent down to kiss her lips again. Zoya closed her eyes as soon as his lips touched hers. They deepened the kiss drowning in the desires they had been fighting for so many months. They pulled apart and Zoya looked in his eyes which begged her to love him. Zoya gently kissed his lips, cheeks, eyes and nose and again pecked his lips whispering an I Love You after every kiss. Asad repeated her actions and moved down to place feather light kisses on her jaw and neck. Zoya fisted his shirt pulling him closer to her and moaned his name "Asad...please..." that's all that Asad needed and he let go completely. They spent the night expressing their love for each other like never before.
Asad woke up when he felt Zoya snuggle further into him. He opened his eyes and saw her still sleeping, her head on his arm and her hand across his chest. The events of the previous night played in his mind and he smiled his million dollar smile at a sleeping Zoya and kissed the top of her head. He quietly moved out of the bed and went to his washroom to shower and change. He had to plan for their future, away from all this mess. It was getting difficult for him to live like this. Zoya wokeup soon after and the events of the previous night came rushing back to her. She felt her cheeks turning red and smiled at the memories. She heard the shower running in his washroom and decided to get out of his room to avoid any embarrassing situation. She quickly collected her clothes that were still strewn on the floor and went to her room, immediately stepping into the shower so she could get the breakfast ready.
They had their breakfast in silence and later settled with their cups of coffee. Asad could see Zoya a little uncomfortable and not making eye contact with him. He felt as if she regretted last night.
"Zoya... Is everything all right?"
"Yes Mr.Khan" she said without looking at him.
"Mr.Khan? Last night you called me Asad, not once but again and again. Why did you go back to calling me Mr.Khan? You're not looking in my eyes either and you didn't look at me once since I came out for breakfast... Zoya are you ashamed of what happened last night? Do you regret it?" He said in a soft voice sounding hurt and insecure.
Zoya could hear the hurt in his voice and looked up in his eyes. She held his hand tightly and shook her head in denial "I'm not ashamed of what we did...because I love you. I thought you wouldn't be happy with what happened as you've always scolded me for being too broad minded... I thought I would see anger or maybe disgust in your eyes and so didn't want to look in them after what I saw in them last night, I would not have been able to see anything else except love." With that a small tear rolled down her cheeks and Asad immediately wiped it with his knuckles and shook his head to tell her not to cry. He pulled her close to himself on the couch and stroked her arm to comfort her.
He held her close and said "Zoya believe me... I don't regret what happened. We did say we won't cross our limits but we did... I'm not trying to justify... but just letting you know I love you and you mean the world to me. For me you are my life, my better half..." Zoya's eyes shot up to meet his and she saw love, faith and sincerity in them. Zoya smiled and gave him a small peck on his cheek. He kissed her back and told her he had to go out for some important work and would be back by evening.
As Asad entered his house Zoya flung herself in his arms and told him how much she missed him all day. Asad held her face between his palms and gave her a passionate kiss telling her he missed her too. Zoya blushed at his open confession as she was not used to this side of Asad. She told him to change as the dinner was ready.
"Zoya... I have to tell you something very important." He said with uncertainty as he was not sure how she would take this news.
"Yes tell me"
"No. Not now. Let's have dinner first and then we'll discuss it over coffee. Is that ok?"
Zoya nodded her head in agreement and Asad left for his room. Dinner, unlike Breakfast, was not so quiet. Zoya kept talking, telling Asad all she had done alone in the house and Asad just smiled listening to her being her normal self. By the time Zoya remembered that Asad had wanted to talk about something it was too late.
"Zoya please sleep now. It's very late."
"But Asad you wanted to tell me something."
"We can talk in the morning we should sleep now it's very late." As soon as Zoya turned around to leave he called her and she turned around to look at him. Before she realized Asad took her in a tight hug surprising her. She wound her arms around his waist and held him as tightly as she could. Asad moved back a little and dipped his head to peck her lips very gently. "Good night Zoya" he whispered. Zoya opened her eyes which she didn't know had closed on their own accord as soon as Asad's lips touched hers. "Good night Asad" she said in a soft voice and both went to their rooms.
After breakfast the next morning when the two sat out on their bench for coffee, Asad held her hand and said "Zoya...do you love me?" Zoya was taken aback by his words and his tone. He sounded confused and unsure. She looked into his eyes and said "Yes I do, but why do you ask me this after what we've shared and what we have..." There was complete silence for the longest 2 minutes of her life. She looked at Asad who looked restless and so confused that she had tears in her eyes looking at him in that condition. She was used to seeing confidence oozing out of every pore in his body, to seeing him in control of whatever happened around him but what she saw now just broke her heart. She placed her hand on his shoulder and asked him again "What's wrong Asad? You know you can tell me, right?" He looked at her and cupped her face in his palms. He looked in her eyes and said "I want to go away from here Zoya. Somewhere far away, where this hurt, this feeling of loss and losing to that man will never touch me." With that tears rolled down his cheeks. Zoya's eyes filled with tears seeing Asad cry. She wiped his tears and asked him to smile even though her own tears were now flowing freely.
"Zoya I don't want to live like this, dying every day. I miss Ammi a lot Zoya and the fact that Mr.Rashid Ahmed Khan snatched her from me, just kills me. I want her back but she has made her choice and now it's for me to make my choice and decision. So I've decided to move out of Bhopal and start afresh with you. I want you to please start packing your things."
"But Asad how can we..." But she was cut off by Asad.
"Yes we can Zoya. If no one is bothered about us why should we wait for them? We have each other and that's sufficient. I don't need anybody else."
With that he pulled her to him and held her tight against his chest trying to calm his heart which was beating wildly against his ribcage. He felt relief wash over his senses when he felt her arms go around his waist and she hugged him back with no arguments about his decision about leaving. In that moment Asad Ahmed Khan knew that the woman in his arms was someone he could not loose. She was going to be the sole reason for his existence from this moment on. They pulled away and looked into each other's eyes. All they could see was undying love for each other. Asad held her gaze and dipped his head to kiss her lips. They shared a passionate kiss on their bench which was a witness to their love that had taken months to develop. They had spent a lot of nights sitting on the very bench fighting and making up to each other and sometimes just being there, supporting each other.
"Zoya we are going to New York and our flight is for tonight. I was out all day yesterday arranging for the visa and tickets."
"But Asad how did you manage all this in one day?" she asked wide eyed. Asad smiled at her expression "I have a friend in the embassy so got his help ...Get ready to go back Zoya." He said with a smile trying to hide the pain of leaving his Ammi and Tamatar.
"But why so soon Asad... I mean we could wait for a few days for Phoophi to return."
"She won't Zoya she said she needs to be with that man... Are you not happy with my decision?" he asked in a hurt voice. She looked at him but couldn't decide whether she was happy to go back to New York or sad to leave her Phoophi who was like a mother to her.
"Asad...it's just... too soon... I mean... I never thought of going back since... Since everything became all right between us... after Tanveer left. I mean we should wait...wait for Phoophi to be back...back home, here... with us." She said with her eyes full of tears.
Asad felt his heart breaking after listening to her. He felt his small world collapsing again and his heart bled thinking she was not with him. He felt alone, lost and vulnerable but he had made his decision. Zoya looked up in his eyes and was shocked to see nothing in them. His eyes were cold, no emotions in them at all. Zoya felt her heart clench and her eyes filled with tears. In a cold voice Asad said "Ms. Farookhi, the flight is at 11 tonight and if you wish to go with me, please pack up and be ready by 7 in the evening." With that Asad got up and went to his room not giving her any room for arguments. Zoya felt tears roll down her cheeks and quietly went to her room. After a lot of thinking she decided to stay back for her Phoophi. Zoya knew what she would be going through in Siddhique Mansion. It had been a living nightmare for Zoya living in that house and she couldn't leave her Phoophi alone. She couldn't understand Asad's behavior but had not missed the lack of emotion in his tone when he told her to be ready if she wished to go with him. Zoya made her decision and stayed away from him all day hoping he will understand what she said. Asad came out of his room at exactly 5 minutes to 7. He patiently waited for Zoya to come out. He kept his eyes glued to her door and at exactly 7 he knocked at her door. Zoya opened the door and looked at Asad. He saw her eyes red and puffy and realized she had been crying all day. He noticed she was in the same clothes as morning. He glanced inside her room and saw her clothes, shoes, perfumes, I-Pad and phone all in their usual place. He looked at her questioningly and she looked away from him. He realized Zoya had made her decision like his Ammi had. His eyes filled with tears and with one last long look at her he stepped away from her.
"Thanks for letting me know your decision Ms.Farookhi." he said in a tone so cold it sent shivers down her spine and fresh tears rolled down her cheeks and with that Asad turned around and left without giving her a second glance. She waited for him to turn around and come back to her, to take her in his arms and tell her he loves her and will not leave her that he will stay with her forever. But he didn't look back. As soon as the door shut behind him Zoya fell to the floor with tears rolling down her cheeks.
