Chapter 30

We reached the hotel we were going for dinner. It was a nice restaurant. I remembered how things had been last time we had gone out for a dinner like this. While I was lost in my thoughts, I didn't even notice that Raghu had stopped the car. It was when he opened my door that I realized that we were going in. He held his hand out and I took it. I realized how much things had changed. We were different people now. But there was one thing that was still the same. Our love for each other. That would always be the same, no matter what happened. Raghu handed the keys to the valet and we walked in. Raghu went up to the receptionist and asked about our reservations. "Yes Mr. Singh, right this way," she said and led us to our table. As we walked towards our table, I realized that the entire restaurant had a very romantic atmosphere, with dim lighting and candles everywhere. Raghu pulled out the chair out for me and I sat down. Things really had changed.

This night was going to be special. I looked at the dance floor and saw that there were some couples that were there. I signaled the DJ, and he started the song that I had told Riya to request. I got up and offered Antara my hand. "Dance?" I asked. She took my hand and I led her to the dance floor. I gently put my hand around her waist and pulled her closer. Our hands joined and her other hand rested on my shoulder.

Hum tere bin ab reh nahi sakte

Tere bina kya wajood mera

I looked up into his eyes and met his. He had that loving look again. The look that made me feel so special and luck to have some one like Raghu in my life. He leaned in and whispered, "Waise Miss. Kaul, aaj tu badi dhaansu lag rahi hain." I pulled back and looked at him. I smiled. His style of complimenting still hadn't changed. We continued to sway to the music.

Hum tere bin ab reh nahi sakte

Tere bina kya wajood mera

Tujhse juda gar ho jaayenge

Toh khud se hi ho jaayenge judaa

I pushed her away and twirled her around twice. She ended up with her back facing me and I crossed my arms around her and we continued to sway to the music.

Ab tum hi ho

Zindagi ab tum hi ho

Chain bhi, mera dard bhi

Meri aashiqui ab tum hi ho

He let go of me. I turned to face him and he grabbed my waist and pulled me close once again. We continued to sway to the music once again.

Ik pal door gawara nahi

I twirled her around once again and when she came back in front of, she put her hands around my neck.

I was breathing harder now. This closeness between Raghu and me felt known and unknown and the same time.

I turned to go but Raghu didn't let me go. He held my hand and pulled me back, but this time kept a little more distance.

I leaned in a bit closer. My heart started to beat faster. Antara looked up. It was as if the entire world had frozen around us. There was only Antara and I. No one else, just us. We stopped moving and just looked at each other.

We were still looking at each other. We were the only couple that wasn't moving. We were so close. I could almost feel her breath.

I ran away from there. This closeness between us, it was new to me. I love him but I had never been this close to anyone, not in this lifetime. I took a few deep breaths and looked in the mirror. I was all red, almost matching the colour of my saree. I splashed some water on my face and dried it. After I had gotten control of myself, I headed back towards our table. I sat down and Raghu asked, "Tu theek hain na?" "Haan, main theek hoon," I replied. "Woh, order kare?" he asked. "Haan, tume jo theek lage, tum woh order kar lo," I replied. He called the waiter over and ordered our food. I decided to change the topic. "Raghu, tumne kaha tha ki mujhe mera aakhri gift ab milega. Toh kya hain woh?" I asked. "Ummm, tujhe abhi chaiye?" he asked. "Hmm, haan," I replied. "Toh theek hain, tu yahin wait kar, main abhi aata hoon," he said and left. "Pata nahi ab kya karega Raghu," I said to myself.

I hurried towards the DJ. "Sab tayaar hain na? Cameras, flowers?" I asked. "Ji sir. Jaise aap ne kaha tha, bilkul waise hi kiya hain. All the best," he said. "Thanks," I said and took the microphone. "Bappa, sab theek se hone dena," I said praying to God. I only wanted to make this night special for her. I just hoped everything went well.

Suddenly, the lights went off. I looked around. Where was Raghu? Suddenly, a spotlight turned on and I saw Raghu in the middle of the stage. What was he doing? "Aaj ka din bahut special hain. Well, mere liye to hain hi aur meri Miss. Kaul ke liye bhi hain. Aaj usska birthday hain. Aur main uss ke liye aaj ka din bahut special bana chata hoon," he said and walked closer to me. "Miss. Kaul, jabse tu meri zindagi mein aayi hain, meri puri zindagi hi badal gayi hain. Tere aanse, aisa lagta hain ki jaise mujhe jeena ka maksat mil gaya." He was standing right in front of me. What was he doing? He took my hand and led me back to the dance floor where he was before. "Yeh joh romantic baate hoti hain, mujhse zayaada nahi hoti. Jo aata tha, woh toh phele hi kar liya. Par haan, itna jaanta hoon, ki tu meri zindagi ban chuki hain. Aur main tere bina jee nahi sakta. Main tujhse bahut pyaar karta hoon." He pulled a box out of his pocket and knelt in front of me. "Har subha mujhe sabse phele tera chera dekhna hain. Haar raat sone se phele, sirf tujhe dekhna chata hoon. Apni puri zindagi laga donga tere iss chere par muskurahat rakhne ke liye. Kya tu mujhe yeh haq degi ki main apni baki ki puri zindagi tere saath guzaron? Kya tu mujhse shaadi karegi, Miss Kaul?" he asked, showing me the ring. I was in shock. I didn't know what to say. I had tears in my eyes. I couldn't trust myself enough to speak so I just nodded my head.

I pulled out the small box with a ring that Mom had given me. She said that it was the ring that I had given her before, last time we had gotten engaged. "Har subha mujhe sabse phele tera chera dekhna hain. Haar raat sone se phele, sirf tujhe dekhna chata hoon. Apni puri zindagi lagadonga tere iss chere par yeh muskurahat rakhne ke liye. Kya tu mujhe yeh haq degi ki main apni baki ki puri zindagi tere saath guzaron? Kya tu mujhse shaadi karegi, Miss Kaul?" I asked. I hoped she said yes. I saw tears forming in her eyes. She nodded her head and I smiled. Nothing could compare to the amount of happiness I was feeling today. I took her left hand and slipped the ring on her finger and kissed her hand.

He took my left hand and slipped the ring onto my finger and then kissed it. He stood up and all of a sudden, there were rose petals falling on top of us. I looked at him in awe.

The rose petals were falling on top of us. Everything was happening the way that I thought it would. She was looking at me in complete awe and I pulled her into my arms and hugged her.

I could hear everyone else clapping. They were happy for us. But none of that mattered at the moment. This moment was Raghu's and mine and all that mattered was Raghu. "Raghu, tumne saach mein aaj ka din mere liye bahut special bana diya," I said. I was still hugging him. I didn't want to let go of him. Not yet. "Acha laga na tujhe?" he asked. "Bahut accha laga," I replied.

I let go of Antara. "Ab tayaar ho ja, Mrs. Raghuveer Singh banne ke liye. Saach mein," I said, winking at her. She smiled and looked at the ground. Thank you Bappa, I thought. Everything worked out fine. The cameras had recorded Antara's reaction, which was something that we would remember forever. The other customers at the restaurant came and congratulated us. "Sir, aap ka private room tayaar hain," a waiter said. "Thank you. Aap jaiye hum abhi aate hain," I said. "Private room?" she asked. "Haan-" I was saying when she cut me off. "No more surprises ok? Bahut surprises hoge hain," she said. "Koi surprise nahi hain. Maine socha tha ki hume kuch waqt akele bitana chaiye. Baki sab se door," I said. "As long as koi surprise nahi hain, I don't mind," she said. "Chal aaja," I said, offering her my arm. She linked her arm with mine and I led her to the room.

We walked into the room and sat down at the table. The dinner that we had ordered before was already laid out there. I looked down at my hand and saw the ring. I hadn't paid much attention to it before, but now that I noticed it, I realized that it was the same ring that Raghu had given to me when we were engaged before. When I had broken off our marriage, I had put it in a small box in my room. "Raghu, tume yeh ring kahan se mili?" I asked, while we were eating. "Woh mom ne di thi. Kyun tujhe pasand nahi hain?" he asked. Of course I loved it. It was my ring. "Mujhe bahut pasand hain," I replied. "Mujhe laga tha ki tujhe yehi ring pasand aayegi," he said. "Pasand kaise nahi aati? Tum ne di hain, obviously pasand aayegi hi," I replied. We finished our dinner and finally left the restaurant. This night had been a memorable night. One that I would never forget. I looked at my phone and saw that it was almost nine. "Raghu, ab hum kaha jaa re hain?" I asked. "Walk pe chale?" he asked. There was a small park near the hotel. It was a starry night and a walk sounded perfect right now. "Haan, chalo," I replied.

We were walking quietly in the park. It was peaceful until Antara's phone started ringing. "Phir se?" I said. "Raghu, koi zaroori phone bhi toh ho sakta hain na," she said. She took her phone out of her clutch and answered the call.

"Hello," I said. "Dr. Antara," I heard a nurse in our hospiral say. "Ji sister?" I asked. "Woh, ek emergency case aa gaya hain aur Dr. Palak ne kaha tha ki main aap ko bualon. Maine aap ko page bhi kiya tha, par apne uska koi response nahi diya," she said. I looked in my clutch and realized that I had left my pager at home. We weren't too far from the hospital. "Ok main abhi aa rahi hoon," I said and hung up. "Kya hua?" Raghu asked. "Hospital se phone tha. Ek emergency case aa gaya hain. Mujhe jaana padega. Kya tum mujhe hospital tak chod doge?" I asked. "Haan chal," he said.

As soon as the car stopped in front of the hospital, Antara ran out of the car and went straight in to the hospital. She had forgotten her clutch on the seat. I opened it and took out her phone and went in after her. I found her in the emergency ward. "Apna phone rakh le, zaroorat pad jayegi," I said. "Thank you," she said and turned and went to the changing room. I turned to go back out when I heard her call me. "Raghu," she said. She came and gave me a hug. "Tum ghar chale jaana. Jab mera kaam khatam ho jayega, toh main tume bula longi," she said. "Theek hain, tu ja," I said. She turned and went back and I went back outside and sat in the car. I wasn't going to leave her alone. By the time she would be done, it would be really late and I didn't want her to be alone.
