Part 1:

Hey guys. So as I write, I just completed reading the book 'Still Reading Khan' by Mushtaq Shiekh. It was given to me for my birthday by a roommate of mine whom I don't get along with anymore. But that's not the point. The point of this post is that I read this book and boy did I learn some deep down secrets of superstar Shahrukh Khan. And I thought since there are so many fans here, why not share them.
Before I begin I want to mention that all of this information is courtesy to Mushtaq Shiekh ji and all those that were involved in the making of this book. Way too many people to mention. Also I want to mention that this may be a long post, but I assure you that if you are a fan of Shahrukh then this read is worthwhile.

While reading his childhood, nothing but tears came rolling down. Shahrukh lost his father at the mere age of 15. I am fortunate enough that I have both my parents by my side at the age of 24. So I may not understand the pain that he went through or the pain that any one of you may have gone through if you have lost a parent. The book goes on to describe the struggles of his father. The backbone of the family was Shahrukh's mother, Fatima. His father was a man of honesty. And because of this quality in his father, Shahrukh would learn how to face his responsibilities. His father was known to have a temper, but Shahrukh never remembered his father or mother raising their hands on him. Shahrukh claims that when his father passed away he didn't cry. He felt cheated despite the fact that he had prepared him for his death. However, when his mother passed away that was a whole different story. He was completely broken after the death of his mother. He was shattered. He had seen his mother go through the most struggles in life such as raising him and his sister as well as taking care of the business after the death of his father. It was also his mother who introduced Shahrukh into the film world. Were it not for her, we wouldn't be seeing Shahrukh as an actor. His mother always gave him the liberty to do what he wanted in life. He was always by his mother's side. When she was ill he would travel from Bombay to Delhi. He would go to Bombay to work and gather money for the medical treatments of his mother. His mother passed away when Shahrukh had left the hospital to buy some medicines for his mom. Shahrukh was quoted saying "My mother's death made me realize nothing is permanent. I stopped hoping for anything. Nothing shocks me anymore. I cried a lot. It was the most painful moment of my life, when my mother died. The first time I prayed to God was when she lay dying. I'd never prayed before. That's the kind of family we were, a Muslim family that never forced you to pray. And it was the first time I really prayed, but she died all the same." One of his close friends was quoted saying "I don't know how he stayed alive after she died. I think a part of him completely died."

Shahrukh Quotes:

"My dad was a lawyer by profession and he had a furniture business. He was a cool guy. Can you believe it, he was the one who designed the diplomat whisky bottle? He could do anything."

"It can never be totally complimentary. I don't like telling anyone I like you straightaway."

"My dad was a good-looking man. He was even offered the role that Ajit Saab eventually did in Mughal-E-Azam. But my dad fell in love with Madhubala and he wasn't sure how he would be ablet o handle this. So he refused the film."

"Once, when I asked my dad if I could go cycling beyond a certain boundary of my home, he whacked me hard on my head and asked me what I was afraid of. He had left his home when he was 16 and he knew how important it was to take decisions on one's own."

"My mother behaved like a true friend when I told her I wanted to marry Gauri. Is she Muslim or Chinese? Nothing was asked."

"My one regret is that my mother never really saw my work as an actor. She wasn't there when I won my first award. No, but she must have seen it. I miss her a lot. I think she is a star. Whenever I feel too sad, I just go up to the terrace and cry. And I know she is watching me from somewhere. Because I wouldn't be what I am had it not been for her blessings."

"There are days when I don't even want to smile on meeting people. But I push myself because I like to be loved and needed."

"In school my teacher used to say I was naughty and that I had a devilish angelic smile. I was always forgiven and would get away with murder."

"I always forgave people. But I will never forget a person who has betrayed me once and is quite liable to do it again."

"On November 2nd, 1965, I was born in Jalwar Nursing Home on Delhi's Pusa Road. I am told mine was a very difficult birth. There was a terrible problem with the umbilical chord. Luckily, I fought it well to live and ell the tale."

"I am a great fantastic accident of being the right person at the right place at the right time. That's the description of my success."

Shahrukh's Friends' Quotes:

"Everything he does is for his mother." - Sunjoy Roy

Part 2:
As a child, Shahrukh was a complete sports person. He played in Cricket, Hockey, and Football. He excelled in Hockey, though he loved Cricket. During his school days, while playing he got in a rift with soon to be wife's Gauri's brother. Coincidence or not? Not only did he play sports, but Shahrukh was an all-rounder athlete! He'd won championships in 200 metres, 400 meters, you name it!

As a college student he changed majors a lot. He did economics at one point. He did arts at another point. He did mass communications at another point. He didn't know which field to settle in. "For the teenager Shahrukh, the switch from sports to the arts was the rsult of an accident. He had hurt his lower back while playing soccer and the doctor forbade a sporting career. The next six months were painful. It was the most depressing period of his life.

He started his acting career while taking parts in small plays and theater acts. "As a young boy, Shahrukh's first encounter with the film world was probably during his trips to his maternal grandparents' home in Bangalore. Mehmood, the legendary Hindi film comedian, actor, and director, owned a large farmhouse in Bangalore, which was populated by numerous relatives and his own huge family. The Bangalore trips were riotous times, with Shahrukh and Shehnaaz running around with Mehmood's children, very much part of the family."

The book goes on to describe the initial struggles of Shahrukh and his career in the theater groups and small plays. Circus and Fauji are what jump started his carer, but most already know that. Through these initial phases, Shahrukh saw failures as well. He was rejected many times.

Quotes from friends/co-stars:

"Today, it may appear as if one is stating the obvious by calling him a champion. But from what I remember of Shah Rukh, he has always been number one: topping in studies, excelling in sports. One had to be an all-rounder to score all the time." - Rahul Dev (College Mate)

Quotes from Shahrukh:

"It looks like I can't say 'no', but I don't do anything that I don't want to."

"An actor needs to be in touch with people. I refuse to live in an ivory tower. I am at the entrance of the tower and I will resist going in. I need to be in touch."

"It's wrong to think that a star or actor of my status or higher is in power. Whatever time one gets, one uses it in ass-licking."

"By my own standards if you ask me whether I'm successful, no I'm not. I want even aliens from Mars coming down to Earth to see my films. In 10 years, I will be the most successful actor. I'll achieve so much success that I'l just live off it."

"Between a quick affair and peace of min, I prefer the latter."

"I'm pompous, pig headed and honest even to accept it. I can't look beyond my nose. When I say I'm the best, I believe it."

"I'm basically a lazy man and want to take it easy after 30."

"I find it very strange when people call me sexy or good-looking. I treat it as a joke,"

"Maybe this is the era of average lookers. I don't have muscles, but I am capable. Maybe it is a 13-year fluke. I am the right person at the right time. Or the audience is short-sighted."

"The first day after pack up, I was quite crushed. I felt I was the wort actor on earth. I kept thinking that maybe I was not cut out for this,"

Part 3:

Some interesting facts:

1) Hema Malini ji deserves a lot of credit for launching Shahrukh. She was the reason behind Shahrukh's role in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. Hema Malini has also helped him shape into the actor he is by helping him with his acting skills.

2) His bad habit of smoking has come from his childhood friends. He started smoking right from his childhood and continues till this day. Peer pressure at its worst!

3) During the shoot of Benaam Baadshah, Shahrukh was introduced to Anil Kapoor who insisted that he speak to Vidhu Vinon Chopra for a role in his upcoming movie (1942 - A Love Story. (Coincidence that at the end, it was Anil himself who starred in it)?!

4) Shahrukh was asked to dub for Salman Khan, but Shahrukh had refused at that time.

5) Juhi Chawla's first experience with Shahrukh was not a pleasant one. She was quoted saying to Vivek (SRK's friend) "You must be joking! That's the next Aamir Khan? Are you out of your mind? What nonsense?"

6) Shahrukh was not proud of his performance or the overall outcome of the film, Deewana. He would consistently refuse to watch it whenever asked.

7) The reason behind why Shahrukh did 'Guddu' - "I didn't want to do Guddu initially. THe producer, Prem Lawani, had written a story about a 12-year-old boy. But he told me, 'I feel you are Guddu and I want to narrate the story to you.' I told him, 'I know I am good but by no stretch of imagination can I play a 12-year-old boy.' THe man then said that he would change it to a college boy. While he was narrating the story, he started crying. This 6'4, rich, NRI businessman crying was a sight I could not handle. Then he said, 'It has happened to my son. My son is modern and he didn't believe that one could cure a fatal disease by believing in God. I did and now he is a cured man.' I would not have done the film if it was given to me a written script, but when I saw this man and his belief, I accepted the film. I can imagine what he went through because I've one through a similar experience with my parents."

8) Gauri was part of Shaimak Davar's dance group in her childhood.

Shahrukh's quotes:

"Aamir's done a lot of good for me. That's why whenever he rejects a movie, I do it, like Swades again."

"Hema Malini saw me and told me I want youto do dthe role because I feel you have an aristocratic face."

"There was an article that quoted me as saying that Hema Malini could not direct. The next day, when I reached the sets, I was embarrassed to face her. She called me and said, 'Either I am very famous or you are very famous. With face, people write rubbish."

"My director Lekh Tandon once told me, 'when you come into a film set, leave logic behind at the doorstep an act'. I follow that to date."

"When I came to Mumbai, I wanted to own the city. Today it owns me."

"I got Rs 4 Lakhs for Deewana. I was supposed to get Rs 1 lakh more if and when Deewana completed a 100-day run. But I got nothing. The producer told me, 'You did not like the film so why should we pay you?'"

"When I came into the industry, I had nothing to lose. I was just an actor and had I not been accepted, I would have continued to act in my bathroom. I did not have to be on the silver screen. My success is incidental, it is not the raison d'etre of my existence as an actor."

"I remember the day I hung around the corridors of Holiday Inn, New Delhi because Subhash Ghai was there with his whole unit of Ram Lakhan. Strangely it was Mr. Ghai I wanted to meet no the stars of his movie. And then, my career gives me a chance to work with him. Why should I ever complain."

"When I see all of the movies I have done, I go 'phew'! It feels like I started just yesterday and God, I am closing in on 50 movies. Not bad."

"Gauri and I have one thing in common. I like me and she likes me."

"My biggest recurring fear is that I'll wake up in the morning and find that someone has cut off my arms."

"One-night stands don't excite me because I see nothing stimulating about sleeping with people whose names I don't know."

"I feel I am less than a normal person, which is why I have no problems fitting into the most abnormal role that I am offered."

"I still believe that most actors are better than me."

"I feel sad for my sister because she has just me in the world. I don't have time to be with her. It's times like these, that I feel I'm very selfish."

"My job is to cry at a call, laugh at a call. Right now, my back hurts. But I have to smile for the camera. In this profession, everyone is looking at you. Everything is under scrutiny. It's difficult to just let go."

"Adaawon se mein maar khaa gaya, nahin to main bahut achcha actor hota."

Friends/Co-stars Quotes;

"Such is his charisma that he made a religious, conservative and tradition expression like 'inshaallah' very cool, fashionable and secular." - Javed Akhtar

Shahrukh & Gauri:

They got married on October 25th, 1992. The next day Shahrukh returned to Bombay with Gauri. Vivek, Juhi, and her mother had hosted a party for the newly wed couple. The highlight of the party was a movie offer by Ramesh Sippy.

For Gauri it was NOT love at first sight. It was only when she kept bumping into him at parties that finally she would get a long lasting feeling for him. It look a long time for their relationship to become serious and mature. Shahrukh was an obsessed lover. That was one trait that really bothered Gauri. Gauri hated the fact that Shahrukh was an actor and she knew her parents would not accept this marriage too soon. The more insecure Shah Rukh became of their relationship, the more he obsessed about her. He became obsessive in the sense that she could not leave her hair open, she could not talk to others, she could not wear a swimsuit, etc etc. He also went to an extent of beating up Gauri's guy friend just because he had visited Gauri once. On her 19th birthday, Shahrukh decorated his room with ballons and filled it up with presents. Gauri came and saw the room and after that she just burst into tears and disappeared. It took Shahrukh days to locate and find her again. It took a lot of convincing to Gauri's parents and Gauri herself, but at the end it all worked out and we all know where this couple is now! They went through a lot of initial struggles. I've only mentioned the few. Even their initial few months after marriage saw a lot of struggles of finding a place to stay and etc. Keep in mind that a this time, Shahrukh wasn't the Shahrukh he is now. They used to live in such a small house. The flat was very small that Shehnaz, Shahrukh's sister, was sent to live in Bangalore with their mother's relatives. Gauri never got herself attached or involved in the film industry in her initial months after marriage. She always kept herself away from parties or anything to do with the industry. Gauri only became comfortable with this filmy life once Karan Johar came into the picture. But Karan and Gauri's first meeting would end up in a funny disaster! (Read the book to find out)![/NOCOPY]

Part 4:

Shahrukh's Quotes:

"I act like a kid. Even my performances are childish. For me, this industry is like a playhouse."

"I hate travelling. Travelling irritates and bothers me. I feel it's a waste of time and very taxing. Call me a bore, I see no romance in the concept of travelling."

"Most actors hate retakes. I love that too. I love everything, everything about acting. Even the hours and hours of wait in between shots fires and gets me all geared up."

"When you are in the movies, you cannot say this is my job and I will do only that. Here you need to know everything. From shot-taking to editing patterns and how to market a film. Everything. You have to be the jack of all trades."

"Reading is my passion. I enjoy reading autobiographies. I have learnt a lot by reading about Churchill, Rasputin, Hitler, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and many more. Reading helps me do something about the stock emotions, thoughts and expressions I am caught in as an actor. Reading is my freedom to go where I want to."

"After Chewbecca died, I tried to stay away from getting any more pet dogs. The pain of losing one was too much to handle. It's only recently, because of my kids, that pets are romping all over our house again."

"If you don't risk taking the odd wrong turn in the quest of breaking set patterns you will go nowhere."

"Many people have a problem with the things I do. For them, I have only one thing to say: It's my life. If you don't like it, switch off."

"I am like a dog. I can snap sometimes, but you can't hate a dog. They are lovable creatures."

"I am nobody to be followed. I am like a cigarette; experience at your own risk. I don't want to pressure kids into believing that heroes are always the best."

"My religion is sacred to me. I don't wear it on my sleeves. I am not a fanatic, but yes, I am God-fearing. And I believe your deeds define you. You get your brownie points and your whiplashes here, during your stay on Earth."

"Off screen, no woman can make me collapse on my knees."

"I don't know how to explain it but there is no difference between my acting and me any longer. It is simply something I do. It is what I am. I can't separate the two anymore. I can separate my work from my personal life but I can't separate acting from me anymore. You know hoe people say something is second nature? ell it's not even second nature any longer. It has become my nature now."

"When people say I copy a lot of actors, I can only think of these actors who have influenced me and there is no shame in admitting that."

"Apart from my face and my lines, everything else that is given to me is a crutch."

"Macho is a man who is not insecure about his manhood. I'm not insecure about mine, so I'm macho."

"For me doing business was simply a means to legalize the films I produced. It was hardly to amass more wealth or to be a Raj Kapoor in the making."

"Whenever I ruffle my hair, I think of the way Rishi Kapoor did it on screen. Maybe sometimes, someone will ruffle his fair the way I do on screen."

"Aryan is better-looking and much cooler than me. But he is not as naughty as I used to be. Suhana is my darling. Left to her devices, she would be happy with her dolls and lipstick shades. Self-content, she is not too much an an attention seeker."

"I wanted to fly, free as a bird, not bound by any consideration, but the independence of expression - I wanted to be a trapeze artist also. I learnt the maxim of acting from my time spent in the circus: 'Ho gaya to kartab, gir gaye, mar gaye toh haadsa.'"

"I have been a huge of of Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Hassan. At Chikki Pandey's wedding, I touched Kamal Hassan and said, Can I touch you to see if you are real?"

Interesting Questions & Answer Session:

Q: Was there any time that you thought this is absolutely unreal, that no one could be this way or behave in this way? So much so that acting it out was a constraint, that it was difficult to conceal it while acting.

A: Okay, I am not going to talk about an absolutely ridiculous thing like Guddu. There have been films that have been radical, matlab, quite nice, but still really difficult to pull through. You know, whenever I have fallen into that trap, I have just restrained myself. My technique for getting over a character that I don't understand is to restrain my performance - smile less, walk less, talk less, and do less. One of them would be Arjun of Pardes. Knowing fully well the logical being of a Hindi film hero, it should not have been a problem. But one still needed to have some semblance of similarity in a two and half hour film. There were times when the character changed and would be very different from what I had envisaged or thought of. So there I just went into a shell and said okay, let me just walk through this - with belief but restrained.

...Another example (one of my most unrestrained performances) would be of Babloo in Duplicate, who was a strange character. difficult to do. I was a little worried ki where is he going. But then I worked out that he was a four-year-old boy in a 25-year-old's body. Then I could do it. I applied the same logic to the bad guy. He was also a demented character like that. In Anjaam too, perhaps by virtue of having done two bad guys already, I was like, where does this guy go yaar? I am doing the same shit. How differently could I do this? And I didn't know any other way to be psychotic than the way I had done it in Darr or Baazigar. I didn't know what to do with him at times.

...Even Karan Arjun I was a little iffy about.

There are so many more question and answers that are quite interesting. But typing all of that would take me forever. Read to book to find out! Quite an interesting read.

Part 6:

The story behind KANK (as told by Karan Johar):

"I feel strangers can have an objective point of view about anything. That's what I am doing on the topic of marriage in this movie. I'm not married. I don't think I will ever be married, but strangely I'm cynical about this institution for the sake of others. My cynicism is a result of my relationships with people who've been married or have suffered in their marriages. My school friends, for example - ten of them got married, and eight of them are back to square one. They are either paying alimony or in the middle of a divorce or will be divorced or should be divorced.

At the end of the day, I have a fairly objective point of view because I've heard both sides of the story on several occasions. And this film is a result of my personal observations, a result of what I see happening around me today, what I see people going through in their homes and what they bring to parties. It's an outsider's perspective.

You'll be surprised to know that I watch very few movies. But I observe. I observe trees, I observe plants, I observe people. I observe them at parties, I observe them in their own surroundings, in my office, anywhere. I'm a people watcher and I feel that most people these days have problems concerning marriage. I felt that I could package this with an entertaining story and yet make my point in a subtle way.

When Shahrukh first read the script of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, he was a worried man. He calls this movie Rahul ki maut. He feels Yashraj or Dharma created a Rahul or a Raj and now, in this movie, I've undone him."

Quoted by Karan: "I am very passionate about KANK, but I have nothing of myself in it. There's lots of me in KKHH, theres the heartbreak, there's parental love. In K3G, there is parental commitment. There's my fear of death and a very strong bond of friendship in Kal Ho Naa Ho. But nothing in KANK is me. I am truly seeing it from an outsider's perspective."

Karan Johor goes on to talk about how KANK came into the making and how Shahrukh had the hardest time playing his character because he simply could not connect to it.

Shahrukh Quotes:

"It's difficult to believe, but I am a shy person."

"If you hate to lose, you will one day stop losing."

"I love to have a good laugh. No wonder the people I surround myself with are not alcoholics, gym addicts, or pseudo intellectuals, but people who know how to let their hair down and have a good time. The ones who can laugh at others and, at the same time, laugh at themselves."

"Many people say Asoka was ahead of its times. Maybe it was."

Said by Gauri Khan: "I didn't like the idea of Shah Rukh being in movies earlier. In fact I hated it. Because the movie industry was an alien world to me. It was not so much the profession but the thought up uprooting myself from a city I grew up in to come to a new place and start life all over again. It was a scary thought!!!"

Shahrukh's friends/co stars quotes:

"It's difficult to know Shah Rukh, but never to love him." - Farah Khan

"SRK are three alphabets that everyone wants to make four-letter words with." -Karan Johar

"Shah Rukh Khan is an actor par excellence. What is most enduring about him is that success has not gone to his head. He respects human values and relationships. Unlike a lot of other stars, he's not a burden to a producer. If he gets along well with a producer he goes out of his way to help him. While we were shooting for Duplicate, Juhi's mother expired in Prague and because of the tragedy we had to postpone a lot of our schedules. Shah Rukh knew we were having a lot of money problems because of this, so he wouldn't accept any money from us, till I gave it to him on the last day of the shoot. He is a big star, with a bigger heart." - Late yash Johar ji

"I found him strange. I didn't find him absolutely straight. This man is manipulative, this man is sharp, this man is wicked, this man is witty, this man is entertaining and this man is charming. In short, he is very interesting - the way he feels, the way he walks, talks. That's what I felt. I found him a very ordinary person with great charm. He is not a Guru Dutt, who be lost in smoke and alcohol be destroyed for a woman. No. Shah Rukh is a practical man. But then, he is also a combination of spontaneity and magic. And his mind is a mathematician's, he uses these factors to get the right equation. He calculates, "Main itna karoonga, toh kam hoga." I don't know when he jumps from the magical to the calculate 0 that is very unpredictable, that is very enigmatic, it's very mysterious. He is one person who can just turn around and be a different person, so I dont know which one I am dealing with. He keeps you unprepared for that and I think that's a mark of any great person." - Sanjay Leela Bhansali

"There is a sense of anguish, there is something I cannot describe to you, for with Shah Rukh you cannot reach him beyond a point. I know I can unravel it completely if I sit with him for a month continuously or meet up with him but I know he will never allow me do so for if he knows this person has come very close, he will withdraw." - Sanjay Leela Bhansali

"Shah Rukh knew Devdas well because of his genuine inheritance of sadness. I see it in his eyes, this longing, this loneliness." - SLB

"Shah Rukh was quite respectful to my father. And my father was not such a big producer at that time. He was known to make big films but he wasn't like Yash Chopra. And he said, 'I have heard so much about you sir. Bhatt saa speaks so well of you.' He just kept talking, talking, talking." - Karan Johar

"He was appalled at half the clothes I gave him to wear. I had been a fat child and I couldn't wear a lot of clothes and I made Shah Rukh wear what I couldn't. There's nothing wrong in a man looking good. Why can't Shah Rukh look good? He became the muse in my head. And it worked." - Karan Johar

"There is no so-called rivalry between Shah Rukh and me. I don't envy his position and success. Why should I? He has earned his status and his position by sheer hard work. I truly admire his ambition and his die-hard will power. There is a place for everyone in this film industry. Like I always say, I can't be SRK and he can't be me." - Manoj Bajpai

"He makes every senior actor feel younger. After years of acting you kind of rust up and face the camera with an amount of complacency. But when you come face to face with an actor liand take stock of what you are doing. One cannot afford to be like Shah Rukh Khan, you rev up and take stock of what you are doing. One cannot afford to be fifty percent in front of someone who is always 100%." - Anupam Kher[/NOCOPY]

Part 7 (Last Part):

Shahrukh Quotes:

"Allah has given me everything in abundance. That includes my illness, my fame and my back pain. I get everything in large doses and I accept everything as good for me."

"I am really not a very fussy eater. But the only thing I cannot stand is extra salt in my food. I am absolutely anti-salt."

"I want to be known as a performer. It would be dishonest of me to say that I am an actor who performs. I am just a performer who is trying to shift towards acting."

"My decision to buy a place at the Palm Resorts in Dubai was an impromptu one. I had gone to Dubai for a show and when I saw the place, I fell in love with it. I am told that Palm Resorts can be seen from the moon. Now, isn't that cool, to own a place that can be seen from the moon? It's a private space that I wanted for my Aryan and Suhana. I wanted to be able to give them everything."

"I am okay about the King Khan tag. It's better than being called Pauper Khan, Loser Khan, or could not make it Khan"

"Aamir wanted me to do Rang De Basanti. I was offered the pilot's role that was done by Madhavan which I was not very keen to do. I wanted to play one of the boys. I guess was too old for that."

Friends/Co stars quotes:

"Shah Rukh not only completed Duplicate (with no help from Mahesh Bhatt, who makes philosophical statements today but at the end of the day, my father landed twice in hospital because of the lack of scheduling), but also gave my family its first success. For me, this production rests on the goodwill and goodness of Shah Rukh Khan and stands for the fact that he was there for my father right through when it was needed." - Karan Johar

"The three-year wait for the movie Main Hoon Naa was the worst period of my life. At that point, I was really confused about Shah Rukh because the whole world was telling me that he is never going to do your movie and he is taking you for a ride. But I felt that if Shah let me down, I would quit the industry. For if he let me down, I would lose faith in mankind itself." - Farah Khan

"I didn't like him in Swades. People liked him, but I didn't like him. For, I know that it was too easy for him. You know, all those people who have never liked him loved him in Swades. They are the ones who get irritated with his flamboyance. But I love all that. So I am saying yeh to Shah Rukh ke liye baayen haath ka khel hai, yeh to aaram se kar sakta hai. For Shah Rukh, Swades was not a big deal at all." - Adi Chopra

"I told him, "Dekh Shah Rukh. I understand you don't like love stories and you find them very pansy. But if you want to be a superstar in this country, you will never be one by being a man's hero. You're a hero of the masses after Baazigar, but you remain a man's hero. Girls like you, but they are scared, since they don't know if they can trust you. In this country you have to be every mother's son, every sister's brother, every girl's dream guy to be a superstar." - Adi Chopra

"Because of his early loss of parents, his sister being unwell, Shah Rukh wants to be loved, loved big time. He is not going to let you go till you love him. So he wil grab you and he will say look at me because I'm giving you love, now give me love back. That's what makes Shah Rukh Khan the superstar that he is." - Adi Chopra

"Shah Rukh knew Devdas well because of his genuine inheritance of sadness. I see it in his eyes, this longing, this loneliness. Even when he is playing with his child, he is lonely. There is this look in his face, where he is childlike and wishing his mother had seen the kids, or wishing his father had seen this. He slips into these moods. That is what works with Devdas, the vulnerability and the inherent sadness, which no other hero has." - Sanjay Leela Bhansali

"When I saw him work in Veer-Zaara, I think somewhere he was drawing from his father in the film. I've never spoken to him about it, but I think I was getting the feeling he was coming closer to his father in a very strange way; he was feeling his body language. He was doing everything slower and he is not slow at all. But he just slowed down for this film. And I just love the way he portrayed that, and I felt that every bit of that man and the younger guy was normal." - Adi Chopra

Why Shahrukh is successful in love stores: "That is a difficult question. There are so many reasons but the main reason is that he connects with the audience. When he is in front of the camera, he never holds anything back. His warmth, his generosity and hsi good-heartedness, it all comes out on screen. Which is what Amitabh Bachchan used to do - never held anything back. Once he was on screen, there was no falseness about him." - Rani Mukherjee

"He used to be rather outspoken and I always used to look upon that with wonder. He used to say, 'I'll destroy Aamir. I'l take over Aamir. I know he's your friend but mai jab filmon mein aoonga na, baja doonga sabki.' Snd all this when he had not even got his first film offer." - Ashutosh Gowarikar

"He is someone who keeps you on your toes all the time. When it's work, it's work. And when it's fun, he sees to it that everyone has a ball of a time." - Raveena Tandon

"Everyone keeps talking about how we look great on screen, But I feel it's got to do with the comfort level. If you enjoy working with the people around you, it shows on the screen. He is my friend, a very dear friend, and that always shows on screen." - Kajol Devgan

"There was talk of Shah Rukh being beaten by Sunny in the climax of Darr. 'Let him,' Shah Rukh said, 'evey time he pastes me, they (the audience) will hate him. And love me.' He played every blow of Sunny Deol to his advantage." - Vivek Vaswani

"He has a certain humane angle that leaves an everlasting impact on you. You act with many co-stars but there are only few who you can never erase from your mind. Shah Rukh is one of them. A terrific actor, he knows what makes another actor tick on screen. A fantastic co star, he is great to face the camera with. When you have an actor who is understanding, then your life on the sets becomes far easier. Wish they made more like him." - Madhuri Dixit

"There is no one like him. He knows what he wants and he will get it come what may. On screen, he sizzles. Off screen, he rocks. There is nothing about him I can bitch about." - Manish Koirala

"He is one non-stop entertainer. One does not know it when you just meet him in person, but watch him on screen and you know this man has persona; screen presence that shocks you." - Aishwarya Rai

"This man gives his co-stars respect. He treats women with utmost care and dignity. There is nothing cheap about anything that he does. It's always a treat to be with him. He constantly motivates me to give my very best to the take. He teats me like a child and also tells me the rights and wrongs of facing the camera. Ever helpful, I can always count on him. Because I know he is there." - Rani Mukherjee

"His mother had asked me if he would be a superstar. I told her I didn't know, but since he was talented he would always be a loved actor. I think it's her prayers that have worked in his favour and helped in making him a superstar." - Aziz Mirza

And that's a wrap. This book is amazing. I've only highlighted the main parts, but there is so much more to this book. If you're a fan, its a must read book!![/NOCOPY]
