Chapter 20

It was awkward walking side by side, though they had been together in the car. They couldn't bear to look at each other. Once inside, someone commented that they weren't dressed properly for the masquerade party and Manveer were whisked away to costume rooms. Some lady with multiple piercings and scary looking hair handed Manyata a black lacy gown made of multiple layers and zipper at the back. She was also given a mask which reminded her of super hero movies she had enjoyed with Kabir. What would Uday be wearing? The thought of Uday seeing her in the itsy bitsy gown made her blush.

Her dress:

The dance floor seemed to come alive with reverberating beats of rock music and people in fancy costumes dancing. Those who were not dancing were smoking cannabis joints and drinking wine from tall glasses. Suddenly she wondered if she made a wrong decision by accepting their invite. The atmosphere was stifling and she wanted to go home. She looked for Uday in the sea of faces and spotted him in a lonely corner wearing a tux and a bat man mask. Unexplained relief rose in her chest and she took a step towards him. But a girl wearing a faux blonde wig with a red rose in hand appeared out of nowhere and began to flirt with Uday flashing her manicured hands and battling her eye lashes. From the delighted expression on Uday's face he didn't seem to mind her. Manyata rolled her eyes; so atypical of Uday. He would flirt with any creature wearing a lipstick and making a pout. She heard a bit of their conversation; Uday was calling her an angel. Boa constrictor would have been more apt, thought Manyata.

She felt thirsty and reached the bar looking for water. A guy in zombie costume was looking at her with interest. She looked back and saw Uday watching them from across the room. This was her chance to get back.

"Hi handsome.." she copied the moves of the blondie who had now moved away to touch up her make up; hoping that it would seem authentic. It proved effective and the guy fell in easily. "Hello lovely lady..Can I buy you a drink?" he said, taking her hands.

Feeling downright stupid, she said "surrre" in the most seductive tone she could conjure; rolling the R's. Uday had seen everything, cool..

Mr.Zombie was about to say something just then a voice cut in, "may I have a dance with you?" it was Uday. Manyata couldn't believe her flirting had taken effect so fast! He didn't wait for an answer; instead he pulled her towards him in a twirl and rolled her in a swift round until she was facing him and their faces were milimeters away from each other. She felt inflamed, what was he doing??

He kept dancing until they reached a wall and pinned her to the wall. Manyata's breath caught and she swallowed audibly. But Uday's expression didn't change a bit. He looked like he was calculating. Manyata felt his cool fingers probe at her back..and then, the sound of metalic zipper sliding up sounded.

Chapter 21

Ohhh...he was only trying to save her from a potential embarassment caused by rogue zipper that had come undone at her back..oh oh oh!! He winked at her and moved away fast.

"yo Lilly..Come with me, lets introduce you to others..Where is Walter? Aah there he is...come lovelies..you are the stars of the partttyy!!" the same scary looking woman from the costume chortled.

She took Manyata's hand and dragged her to the stage, left her there and went to get Uday who looked as confused as she was. Why did the lady call them Walter and Lilly?

"yo amigos..lets raise a toast to our new members..this is for Lilly and this is for Walter.." the lady said loud enough to be heard through the entire room. "wait, we are not-" Uday was saying but the loud music from speakers drowned his voice.

"what are you waiting for? Dance..drink..have fun..take this.." the woman handed him the champagne bottle. Mr.Zombie had come in search of Lilly' and he sent her a flying kiss from his place. Did the man just make a pass at his wife? Uday took a swig from the bottle, then another..and another; until there was nothing left.

The scrawny looking DJ behind the console was changing a track when Uday caught him by collar. "you? You played only english songs to bother me?if you play one more english song, I will hang you from the roof..understand?" Uday drawled in a heavily drunk voice.

"then what shall I play sir?" he asked in fear. "you mouse..play some bollywood song..otherwise you know what im gonna do.." Uday raised a finger at him.

The DJ fished out a disk from somewhere and it began to play. Uday saw Manyata trying to adjust her tiny dress so that it covered her knees.

Ruk ja ohh dil deewane..poochoon toh main zara

Ladki hai ya hai jadoo khushboo hai ya nasha...

Paas woh aaye toh chooke main dekhoon zara...

Uday took her hand from behind and began to groove to the dance. Manyata turned to go but he came in her way. She turned to the other side but it was blocked by some other dancer.

Sharma woh gayi ghabra woh gayi maine jo usko pukara

Yeh dil le liya usne kar diya aankhon hi aankhon me ishaara..

Baat ban jaaye toh main baat chedoon zara...

She turned back and collided with Uday's chest bringing a crimson red on her cheeks. He extended their hands together and covered the entire floor with little steps doing a jig. She tried in vain to get away, put some breathing distance between them but it was no avail. She kept her feet on Udays and they jiggled.

Mehfil me hasi tu hi toh nahi

Roothi tu kis liye akeli

Jis pe yoon fida yeh dil hogaya

Woh toh hai teri ik saheli..

Maan woh jaaye toh gham na karoon main zara..

Suddenly Uday pushed her hand away and pulled the blondie to dance floor in a very very seductive move that had Manyata open her mouth with awe. She wanted to claw blondie's eyes out and roast her on the barbeque. Uday's sexy smirk was bad enough, now blondie joined him too.

Chapter 22

The dance floor became more crowded as people began to rush in to join them until there was very little space left that was too close for comfort. As the song reached its end Uday picked her in his arms like a parcel and bounced her in the tiny space of his hands. He lowered his head on her face as if to kiss her and she smelt heavy alcohol on his breath. but he stopped at that and let out a whoop once and began to carry her towards the rooms at the back stage.

"let me down Uday..stop it..stop I say" she shook her legs vigorously to get free.

Everything would have gone well if only Zombie man hadn't interrupted them. "you! Where are you taking her? can't you see she is with me? If you value your life leave her.." he commanded Uday.

"please let me go Uday..you are not in your senses..LEAVE ME" Manyata said at same time.

Uday let her on her feet and the next instant the other guy tried to place a kiss on her lips but Uday pulled her away.

Next moment Mr.Zombie had real blood on his mouth from Uday's punch and Manyata was taken away like a doll to the store room that was filled with broken furniture.

She had expected some thing else from Uday but his behaviour surprised her in the store room. He left her on the dirty floor and banged the door shut from inside.

"whats this Uday? Whats going on? Did you bring me here to repeat what you did last night? YOU MORON-"

"you are so cheap..after what happened last night, I thought you would change, but you cheated me Manyata..i saw everything you did out there..you are a characterless woman..i knew it that you secretly harboured a crush on Kabir even after marriage but now you crossed all limits..just go away from me..get away from me as far as possible..go to Kabir or go to that guy who is awaiting you there, I don't give a damn..I hate you..i hate you.." he repeated.

Hot tears sprung to her eyes at his accusation. She had never dreamt that Uday could be so heartless and be such a hypocrite. He was the one who started everything and now he was behaving in the most unfair manner, drunk or not. He could flirt as much as he wanted but she couldn't..men were pigs some wise person had said.
