With a faint hope of being able to evoke a feeling in every woman , who reads this post , a thought about what we truly are , the true emerging face of the Indian Woman in the millenium.

The school of thought , is as old as the history that lies buried in the books lying covered in dust , that are ever so often dusted off clean, never once opened or read , only to be buried again in time and dust ... in the remote corners of our homes and our world, mere decorative assets of a household.

"Women should be treated with respect, with care, and should be loved and cared for." Cliched , dishonored , misused.

The words are as shallow as ever and serve as mere catchy lines for attention seeking , psuedo intellectual , wise cracks, who harbor feelings and intentions just as shallow. Days have come and gone, voices have been raised, and hushed, many a tear have been shed never to be seen, yet history repeats , and only repeats, all feeble attempts to create a new history rendered futile , by the forbearers of the old school of thought looming large and roaring loud.

Men are blamed for , for the fate of women, and no denying that , but are they the only ones? No, I disagree, its us women as well. We dare not stand up for own rights and succumb to the wise old school of thought , that seems so insipid and hollow and so way back in time. Women have turned to be the worst enemied of their own kind and there is no denying that , for the incidents that stand witness everyday have been marked in ink , in inconspicuous corners of the newspapers that serve as entertainment during Morning tea?

Is this is all that is there to us Women? To be talked about as some mere puppets, some damsels , some perversive objects , or rather even worse and as jus some beautiful peice of art , that serves many a poets an inspiration to pen a few lines and dream on? Is there no identity to us than this? Have we allowed ourselves to be treated so ? Are we merely satisfied in shedding tears and wailing away and brood over the treatment done unto us? Why are we , as women , never able to stand for one another , to bring about an revolution that would create history?

Many a elite personality , choose to talk about the ill treatment of women and make many a movie and documentary on the same , but never do anything practical. Why so?

In a country like India, a country , that is a host to many a different cultures and ritualistic backgrounds and beliefs , movies and soaps are made , only propogating blind faith and insipid beliefs that hold no water? And it is the women, literate and semi literate , who are mislead , and sadly who allow themselves to be mislead , watch the same and serve to heavier the cash bags at the end of the day, only craving for more of the insipid stories portraying their own kind in a demeaning and loathful manner.

Motherhood dishonored , marriage , companionship, trust , faith, family, bonding, relationships , have been mocked at and yet ... nothing seems to have changed. Our whining over this portrayal seems with each passing day , a mere act , of guilt wash, a shameful hogwash to those to hear and watch.

Portrayal of Gauri as a whining wife , with no backbone whatsover , Nikhila as a evil Mother , who wishes no good for her son, for the sake for a few dollars more is resentful.

One could go one , with this lament, but words and time shall fall short! I have as of this very moment , with a clear heart, say this , that I am proud to have taken a stand , to be a honest with myself, that I have , not succumbed to what my heart does not consent, even it means to swim against the tide. As a woman I say this, if we dont help ourselves, no one else will, not even the holy God in the heavens!

I request every woman , who reads this post, I urge thee, to please ask yourself these questions:

Are we standing up against any injustice done unto a woman?

Are we living a life , that is we so deserve as women, a right to our own , thought , and freedom?

Are we not supporting those inane and perversive portrayals of woman in movies and serials more so often and only whine as a necessary socialistic norm and choose not to anything?

Are we really excersing the right to our lives and freedom , not jus a women , but as humans? Are we really?

The world has come of age, have the women really come of age?

Has The Indian Woman really come of age, if all a successful young woman, who is reigning as the TV soap monopolist , can only churn out stories propogating only age old , inane and inpisid conventions and beliefs only because the rest of the women crave for it? Has the Indian Woman really come of age?

Ask yourselves , my dear woman friends, please do...What is the Real Picture?

- Sareeta

PS: I am aware of the exceptional woman who have made a mark , and in this post I have only raised an issue related to television which has such a strong impact on many a viewers of all ages and especially women!

No offence intended to anyone. This topic has been posted only to begin a thought process that would in some way provoke us all to think and act , an attempt , among the many attempted before...

Very interesting topic indeed Sareeta ji.

Firstly, I think most, if not all, Indian soap operas portray women in total contrast to the actual lives of women of any class for that matter.

I mean the women that are at home, in a soap, wear tip-top saaris or outfits that real women wear to fancy functions or events of importance to them. Already wearing perfectly nice outfits, when time comes to go somewere they say, "haan...mein bas tayar ho kar ayi." Already looking like that, what did you miss that you need to get ready all over again. 😕 That is just the "look" of the reel women that doesn't match majority of real women.

Personally, I think Gauri's character on the show right now perfectly matches a busy mother of three young children, a wife and a the only daughter-in-law of the household from the generation. With so many things to take care of, she does not have time to think of her own needs - so she puts them aside. That is what I don't think should happen. Trying to fulfill the needs of her loved ones Gauri is ready to sacrifice her own needs, however I think one of these days she should just say enough and ask for a much deserved vacation. I think Gauri is one of the few characters protrayed on tv that might come close to the real life of a mom, wife, and daughter-in-law.

For women in general, I think we need to stand up for what we believe in and fight for it. I think everyone believes in equality until some point or other but all are lost thinking, "Oh! She also is saying so she will do it. She is doing it nah, thats enough." I don't think we realize the meaning of "EACH person can make the difference when fighting for a cause."

That's just my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own, so don't take any offence. Thank you!

👏Hey Dost, this is my take on the real picture...

You see yaar, women have evolved, men have evolved too but I think culture and traditions are yet to be fully evolved...

As an Indian our upbringings have been different, I would say.. always be dignified, walk away, husband and in laws always come first, men should look after women etc.. now coming back to gauri.. here my answers

Are we standing up against any injustice done unto a woman?

It depends what the injustince has been done, but to be brutally honest as long as it is not happening to me I dont care attitude we have and this is injustice itself..why should I can get involve.. you see we as women tend to back off and become a bit selfish..

Are we living a life , that is we so deserve as women, a right to our own , thought , and freedom?

To make a life for yourself as a woman, you have fight for it, it is sad but you have to be strong enough...to stand for what you believe..

Are we not supporting those inane and perversive portrayals of woman in movies and serials more so often and only whine as a necessary socialistic norm and choose not to anything?

yes unfortunately, we do potray this a daughter is always perfect, the bahu is always mahan thinks of nothing but her family and the mahanness of the family...

There is always a woman out there to break a marriage, it is disrespectul to a certain degree, my friend.... the potrayal of women in the serials.. is definately not real life..

Has The Indian Woman really come of age, if all a successful young woman, who is reigning as the TV soap monopolist , can only churn out stories propogating only age old , inane and inpisid conventions and beliefs only because the rest of the women crave for it? Has the Indian Woman really come of age?

Ekta fans! please turn and look away now! Ekta needs to revamp her serials big time, it is becoming tedious watching this inane potration of woman. The story lines are always saas-bahu.. one is evil one is good, woman out there breaking marriages, canned with full make up, making evil plans.. woman in this day and age are confident, educated, they successfully run business, their home and look after their children.

Ask yourselves , my dear woman friends, please do...What is the Real Picture?

The real picture my friend, women have evolved, I think perhaps the serials and films evolved with us as well..

Thank you dost, love ya, great topic, enjoyed that👏

iffat xxxx

p.s this are my views only, if they are harsh.. apologies indeed

The school of thought , is as old as the history that lies buried in the books lying covered in dust , that are ever so often dusted off clean, never once opened or read , only to be buried again in time and dust ..(i know its not related to topic) sareeta di, the lines u have above are just awesome. lovd the way u put them.👏. in the remote corners of our homes and our world, mere decorative assets of a household.

"Women should be treated with respect, with care, and should be loved and cared for." Cliched , dishonored , misused.

Days have come and gone, voices have been raised, and hushed, many a tear have been shed never to be seen, yet history repeats , and only repeats, all feeble attempts to create a new history rendered futile sareeta dii, i beg to differ with u regarding 'futile effort'. from what i had read and as far as i remember from history, women rights have emerged to an extend unpredicted by, i would say, revolutionists. we dont see or hear about things like 'killing wife when husband dies' , 'dowry' , 'restricting females to kitchen' , 'NO female employment' , 'female abuse' and many more., by the forbearers of the old school of thought looming large and roaring loud.

Men are blamed for , for the fate of women, and no denying that , but are they the only ones? No, I disagree, its us women as well. We dare not stand up for own rights and succumb to the wise old school of thought , that seems so insipid and hollow and so way back in time. Women have turned to be the worst enemied of their own kind and there is no denying that , for the incidents that stand witness everyday have been marked in ink ,here as u said ,i wouldnt blame men for'old days women streo-type'. Frankly i dono how or why or when the so called rituals were made, but when i stir my memory to my Indian history days, i would like to say tht the marriage system is the one to be blamed on. from the begining it gave more freedom and right to men. women are designed as delicate and unworked category which is assumed to be useless.. so when marriages are done, the women restriction to household lead women(bahu and saas) a way to remove their frustration over these senseless restriction, towards one another.there could have been a phase in the history where women themselves felt 'they r good for nothing'🤢but women like 'jhansi lakshmi Bhai' stood as an example and role model for all those women who lived ablivion lives.👏 in inconspicuous corners of the newspapers that serve as entertainment during Morning tea? 👏 all the way i am being driven by ur ability to write such a nice lines😳

Is this is all that is there to us Women? To be talked about as some mere puppets, some damsels , some perversive objects , or rather even worse and as jus some beautiful peice of art , that serves many a poets an inspiration to pen a few lines and dream on? Is there no identity to us than this? i think u are in 18th 17th century when writing the essay.😊 frankly, just see around more than this😳😆i see U more than what u have writen.😃Have we allowed ourselves to be treated so ?again going back to ur age of history, any revolution needs its time and effort to gather strenght to change the system we r living in.😛women allowed the unaccepted treatment due to theri inability to fight against it. but once things started changing, women education and even some men like Raja RamMohan Roy, stood their lives against the 'aged rituals' Are we merely satisfied in shedding tears and wailing away and brood over the treatment done unto us?if tht generation would have just been satisfied, then we wount be in this position😳😊

Why are we , as women , never able to stand for one another , to bring about an revolution that would create history? ofcourse they did, as far as i can see.😊

Many a elite personality , choose to talk about the ill treatment of women and make many a movie and documentary on the same , but never do anything practical. Why so?😆😆aap kahan rehthe ho sareeta di.😆

In a country like India, a country , that is a host to many a different cultures and ritualistic backgrounds and beliefs , movies and soaps are made , only propogating blind faith and insipid beliefs that hold no water? And it is the women, literate and semi literate , who are mislead , and sadly who allow themselves to be mislead , watch the same and serve to heavier the cash bags at the end of the day, only craving for more of the insipid stories portraying their own kind in a demeaning and loathful manner. ok, i am being an Optimistic here. i agree tht we are very torturable in this manner.but why so? bez women, more so as a girl myself, love to live in cinddrella land, where dreams come true😃. i.e. things which we dream(day dream) for and completely knowing the fact tht those dreams would never become real, would want them to see unvieling for the fellow women and find happiness there.😳

agree tht women the soaps are being treated as 'ceatures without brains' but tht is as the soap progresses and after the point of addiction and acceptance.😳😆 In the begining of the soap dont u see the wide range of 'best Qualities' a human can have, in the lead protagonist. tht in itself has fulfilled our dream of being like tht.

they why are men not interested in soaps? they tend not to live in cindrella land (cindrella is also a girl)😉

Portrayal of Gauri as a whining wife , with no backbone whatsover , Nikhila as a evil Mother , who wishes no good for her son, for the sake for a few dollars more is resentful.the above mentioned portrayals are necessary to create sympathy for the girl who had lived her life with 'principles'😉

One could go one , with this lament, but words and time shall fall short! I have as of this very moment , with a clear heart, say this , that I am proud to have taken a stand , to be a honest with myself, that I have , not succumbed to what my heart does not consent, even it means to swim against the tide.
