"Aaj toh main gayi" Maan muttered as he settled inside his car and started to drive home. "Phir se late, Geet nahi chodhegi" he mumbled to himself and could almost hear his beloved wife yelling at him.
"Maan aaj main aapko chodhunga nahi, hamesha late, kaam ke alewa kuch aur dikhai deta hai kya?"
"Upar se aaj anniversary bhi hai" he shook his head cursing his forgetfulness, he decided to head to a store to pick a cake and a gift from a nearby jewellers.
He walked inside and walked over to the counter. "I want a black forest chocolate cake with Happy Anniversary' and to my wife Geet" he told the salesperson.
"Yes sir, when would you like it for?" he questioned.
"I need it in the next half an hour" Maan informed.
"Sir that isn't simply possible" the woman shook her head.
"Well make it possible or I'll make sure I get this closed down, I don't want to upset my wife so better get on with it" he glared narrowing his eyes at her. "Or get me your manager since you don't know its Maan Singh Khurana you're speaking to"
She gulped hard and nodded meekly. "It'll be done soon" she walked to the back to place the order.
"I'm coming back" he yelled over the counter and walked out to the nearby jewellers to pick out a simple necklace for her, he knew she didn't like diamonds or such big stoned necklaces so he settled on a small chain with a heart shaped pendant. He smiled caressing the little heart and could imagine her excitement as he'd bought a small chain last year except it was of a dove.
"Aww that is so beautiful" she squealed caressing the dove that now hung on her chest. "I love it so much Maan" Geet turned around wrapping her arms around his nape pulling him closer. "I love it hubby"
"I love you wifey" he replied back rubbing his nose against hers before inching closer and pressed his lips against hers kissing ever so lovingly.
"Yep she'll love it" he thought to himself and walked over asking the salesperson to pack it and wrap it nicely.
Once he'd picked up the cake and had the gift he headed back home where he knew his upset wife would be waiting for him. She hated him working so late, she hated his office, his timings, anything related to his office she hated it.
"Maan are you planning to live in that office of yours?" Geet questioned, she'd been waiting for some time and being impatient as she is, she decided to call and find out where her husband had disappeared.
"Baby I'm coming in an hour" he promised.
"No, no, and no... Come home right now! I'm waiting" she told him sternly and he knew it was his warning or else he'll be on the couch tonight so he packed up and decided to head home rather than face the wrath of his wife later on. The couch was nowhere comfortable to his wife's arms.
"I'm so sorry baby" Maan walked into the bedroom apologizing already. "I know you hate me working so late but today's meeting had taken longer than expected" he explained placing the gift bag down and placed the cake on the drawer.
"And look what I've bought, your favourite black forest chocolate cake" he continued grinning widely as he opened the cake box.
He cut a small piece and offered to her. Except she wasn't in flesh no more, she was just a picture.
"Happy anniversary baby" he wished her with his eyes slightly welling up.
"Don't ever cry Maan. You look like a ugly baby and your Geet doesn't like your tears"
It was as if he heard her soft voice and he rubbed his face then grinned widely. "Do I still look like a ugly baby then?" he chuckled then picked up the bag. "And here's your gift honey" he pulled out the gift and unwrapped it showing it to her picture.
"A small chain just like you love, this time it's a heart because since you've taken my heart with you then its only fair I have yours right?" he laughed lightly.
"I would've prepared a dinner but you see Geet I don't have you with me" he shrugged. "Remember last year?" he questioned drifting back to their last anniversary.
"Thank you for the dinner Maan" Geet held onto his hand pulling it closer to herself.
"You're welcome wifey" he pressed a kiss to her temple. "And I'd do it all the time just for you"
She smiled and stood to her feet. "Dance with me please" she tugged gently and he followed willingly and was quite eager to have her in his arms.
Geet wrapped her arms around his nape holding onto him whilst his hands rested on the small of her back, they gently swayed to the soft music playing in the hall.
"I love you so much" Geet pressed a kiss to his jaw.
"As I love you" he replied dipping his head and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"Accha?" Geet's eyes glinted mischievously as she gazed up at her husband longingly.
He hummed in response and pecked her lips gently.
"Show me" she whispered tightening her arms around his nape and pressed herself closer to him. Maan understood all too well and smiled gladly, he lifted her up in his arms and headed towards their bedroom.
Life is so unexpected, full of surprises, unpredicted, something is always round the corner just waiting for the perfect time.
He picked up the photograph that sat on his bedside drawer and stared at it longingly, a soft smile touched his lips as he stared at his beautiful wife. He missed her dearly, nothing could fill the loss and longing he felt within.
He turned to his side and looked at the empty space that once was occupied by her now it only carried her faint vanilla scent.
"What are you doing?" Geet giggled as Maan continued to nuzzle her nape despite making love to her 3 times tonight he couldn't yet get enough of her.
"I love your smell vanilla"
"How many times shall I remind you hubby my name is Geet not vanilla"
"You taste and smell like Vanilla" he chuckled pressing his lips to her throat.
"Stop calling me vanilla" She smacked his shoulder, Maan sighed and pecked her lips softly before resting on his back, Geet cuddled closer resting herself on him.
"I love you" Geet pressed a kiss to his chest before closing her eyes.
"I love you too" Maan tightened his arms around her not wanting to let her go.
Except he had to eventually let her go. The woman who he loved dearly, the woman who he adored, cherished, admired, he had to let her go suddenly.
He remembered the day he learned of Geet having an accident, she didn't have much time, she was breathing her last and right now he could almost see the day so clearly, it was such a fresh wound that ached.
"Nothing will happen" Maan muttered as he held onto Geet's hand.
She shook her head smiling faintly. "It's my time Maan" she whispered, she knew that, Maan knew that as well since the doctor had mentioned it to them Geet had fractured her lung and they wouldn't be able to save her even if they tried.
She swallowed hard. "Let me go" she pleaded wincing in pain as she spoke.
"I can't. How can I?" he almost cried shaking his head. "I can't live without you"
"You can and you will" she replied. "Now... let me go please" she pleaded wanting to be free of the pain.
He shuddered, he could feel his heart breaking just watching her lying helplessly, the wife who was always active and on the move no longer was on her feet.
"Give me one last kiss Maan" she pleaded, Maan inched closer whilst the tears rolled down his cheeks, he pressed his lips to hers for one final time.
"I love you" he mumbled parting gently then closed her lips with his.
Geet smiled widely as he parted, she shook her head at him as he cried. "You can't cry Maan, I don't people calling my khadoos a cry baby" she chuckled in pain and slowly closed her eyes.
"Baby" he called threading his fingers through her hair.
"I love you Maan" she whispered without opening her eyes, she couldn't see his face just when she's about to leave. She wouldn't be able to bear the pain of seeing him breaking down, she wanted to cry, scream and run into his arms, beg him to hold onto her, she didn't want to leave him, she didn't even want to die but it was pointless, it was her time to leave, she sucked a harsh breath and exhaled trying to keep breathing for as long as she could, she felt darkness clouding her vision, her heart sinking, she could hear Maan calling her name, his cries, she then slipped into a deep sleep.
"Papa" Maan heard the soft angelic voice and turned his head and smiled at his daughter standing by the door hugging her teddy close to her chest. His angel - Maansi. Maan had adopted her 6 months ago as he'd come to know she had no one, he went to attend a social charity and orphanages that Geet used to help out in, seeing Maansi that day he felt himself getting attached to her, he'd spent two weeks with her getting to know her, he'd come to know Geet was also attached to Maansi, she had a soft spot for Maansi and was speaking about adopting her, he learned that she hadn't been able to get round to talking to him because it was on that day she'd died, Maan didn't wait any longer and adopted her and since then he and Maansi shared a special bond. It was as Maansi was guardian angel on behalf of Geet, Maansi was looking after him till he meets his wife.
"Can't my little angel sleep?" Maan asked and walked over to her, he lifted her up in his arms and carried her back to bed. He settled her onto his bed and stretched beside her.
"Whats wrong angel?" Maan questioned noticing her gaze on something behind him.
"You were looking at mama again?" she asked innocently.
Maan smiled and nodded. "Mama was angry at papa so I had to make her happy" he explained pushing her hair away from her face.
"Do you miss her papa?" she snuggled closer hugging her teddy bear close.
"Always" Maan muttered patting her back.
"Mama's watching over you, you'll be with her for the next life" she responded repeating what she'd heard her par Dadi telling Maan all the time.
"Yes I will" Maan pressed a kiss to her forehead and closed his eyes and waited for the day he would meet once again with his wife. She was his one and only.
