Antara Kaul (Nikita Sharma) is an angry young woman living in New York City. Her father committed suicide when she was young, leaving her mother Geeta Kalr alone with her and her two younger children, Ishaan (Atith Naik) and Rukhsana. The restaurant that Geeta operates is financially faltering. Furthermore, Antara's paternal grandmother, Aaji blames Geeta for the suicide and refuses to accept Rukhsana (who was adopted by Geeta) as her granddaughter, blaming her for bringing bad luck to the family. The only bright spot in Antara's life is her bumbling MBA classmate MachMach.
Meanwhile, Raghunath Naik (Ayaz Ahmed) shifts to Antara's neighbourhood. Noticing the sadness of his new neighbours, he intervenes. His well-meaning interference in their activities, his help in reviving their financial standing and his general optimism soon change their lives for the better. Although Antara is initially reluctant to enjoy Raghu's presence, she grows to like him and eventually falls in love with him. Also, MachMach., who has been in love with Antara, is too scared to ask her out. On Raghu's encouragement, he calls Antara for lunch where she reveals to MachMach about her love for Raghu. Heartbroken, MachMach.Informs Aman about this. Antara goes to Raghu's house to ask him out where Raghu lies to her that he is married to Shrusti.
Raghu, it is revealed, is dying of a severe heart condition. Also, Shrusti is not his wife, but his long time friend and doctor. Knowing that his lifespan is limited, he sacrifices his love for Antara and plays matchmaker between MachMach.and her. After collaborating with MachMach., Raghu plans a strategy that will make Antara fall for MachMach in six days. This eventually works by the end of the sixth day, but after later arriving in MachMach's house, during a conversation between Raghu and him, Antara finds out that MachMach sought Raghu's help to attain her love. She leaves his house in anger, where Raghu and MachMach chase her to the to a train station. MachMach. Confesses his love for her, but Antara says that he does not truly love her, and only wanted to break her heart.But Raghu, desperate to make Antara realize how much MachMach loves her, pulls out Machmach's diary from his pocket and reads a fraction of it. It states how much MachMach loves her and what he would do for her happiness. However, it is later revealed that MachMach's diary was blank and that Rsghu had actually confessed his own feelings for Antara, pretending they were MachMach's. That night, Antara goes out with Getta, who convinces her to get married to MachMach. Coincidentally, that same night, MachMach asks her out to apologize, and also proposes to her. Antara, realizing how much MachMach loves her, accepts the proposal and there is a celebration at the Kaul household when MachMach later phones Raghu to tell him what had happened. Meanwhile, Raghu's health deteriorates.
The tension within Antara's family also stops when Raghu, after accidentally intercepting a personal letter addressed to Geeta, reveals that Rukhsana is Antara's half-sister through their father's extramarital affair. Geeta's acceptance of her husband's infidelity is what led to his suicide. Ajji finally accepts Rukhsana, and the now-united family prepares for MachMach and Antara's wedding. After attending the engagement ceremony, Raghu's health deteriorates. Antara, in a chance-encounter meets Shrusti and learns the truth about Raghu's health condition. When she approaches and accuses Raghu of lying, he convinces her to get married to MachMach, she accepts and they embrace. MachMach and Antara get married. After their marriage, Raghu hugs them tight. Few hours later, he wakes up in hospital. Raghu's loved ones visit him. After the visit, he makes MachMach promise that "In the next birth Antara will be his." Raghu dies in hospital with MachMach by his side and Antara looking through the window.
Twenty years later, an older Antara relates the story to a grown-up Rukhsana, telling her how Raghu taught her to love: herself, life in general, and MachMach. It is revealed that Antara and MachMach have a daughter of their own. Antara ends her story by narrating that while every wife dreams of finding a friend in her husband, she was lucky to find a husband in her friend.
