I am too high strung to sleep so I thought I'd start this topic and then go to sleep.
I love Vani Rani to bits now. I did not watch it as after the debacle that was Chellame (throw in Annamalai, Selvi and Arase as well), I was no longer interested in any of Radhikaa's serials. When it was touted that Radhikaa was doing dual roles and Venu Arvind was in it (oh God, he was so one-dimensional in Selvi), I was thinking there is no way I am going to get caught with this one. Until my sister and I spent our annual holiday with a couple of my IF friends...they made me sit and watch some episodes and the episode where Rani pretends to be Vani at Gautham's principal's office just had me rollicking in laughter. I was hooked. I came back and watched all the episodes and caught up. I was also hooked on the last legs of Thirumathi Selvam - you can say that that was a strange, self-loathing fascination. My sister made fun of me "Yeah, yeah, she says she can't stand serials and yet every night I hear sounds from her room". And she was/is right. I can't stand our serials, the Sun serials at least. The disgusting plots, the vile dialogues, the over-acting. The worst thing about the serials is the way they treat women. Harassment, molestation, rape, abusive dialogues and language were exploited to the fullest under the guise of entertainment. I liked Thendral because I liked the premise. To be honest, I would have been equally enamoured if the protagonist was a man and the story was about a boy struggling against odds to obtain an education. Education is so important to me. So I sat and watched as Thulasi struggled with a cruel father and evil stepmother and a guardian angel for a grandmother. Then came Tamil, a knight in shining armour...and then what happened? It has become rubbish, all the characters have changed. The worst was Kalyani, who from an independent, assertive, admirable young woman became a snivelling, spineless, timid, wilted piece of cabbage. I can't understand why the director changed the character just because he changed the actress. I can safely say that I have not watched Thendral for quite some time now. Nor Vamsam. Nor Deivamagal. First time I sat down to watch Nadeswaram with a cup of tea after a particularly long hard day, all the vile dialogues came out. "Nee nasama pove, nee manodu pove"...and this from a sister to her brother. I stood up, took my tea and walked off. Mundanai Mudichu is a farce.
Daytime serials are no better. A married woman lusts after a married man (someone else's husband) and is willing to go to all ends to get him - including dumping her own husband and chasing the man's wife away. Another one makes the man leave his wife and co-habits with him shamelessly.
With all this that is going on, along comes a piece of crap called Deiva Magal. The very first episode put me off completely. The principal of the finishing school says that they are teaching women to be good wives, daughters and daughters-in-law. I thought what dafuq? (Sorry, I did not go to finishing school) and yet every episode insults women - either they are foul mouthed money minded cheap women like Saroja or arrogant disrespectful and conniving like Gayathri or snivelling crybabies like Sampoornam. Again this serial perpetuates violence against women - the episodes where Raju goes to Thilaga's working places and whacks her and abuses her are unforgivable. Worst was when Saroja sends Dharani to the shop, hoping that the hormone raging boys would molest/rape her so that she can chase her out of the house is simply the most offensive, disgusting plot that I have ever come across. And yet this serial is no.1 and it has a strong following amongst IFians too. They have fanfic, newsletter etc. I cannot understand it. LOL
So what is it about DM or Nadeswaram or any other serial that fascinates you? You know what I like about VR? Two words. Intelligent directing.
I am curious, so I have started the ball rolling. Please take it up. Now I am off to bed. :D
