Chapter 32 - Phir Kabhi
A cool mist of rain hit her as she rolled down the window. She wished she was driving but the way her hands were shaking made taking a taxi the most sensible option.
She wondered whether the driver would drive over the limit if asked.
Oh, how she wished she had said no when she had been approached for this project.
In the early days, she and Geet had worked together on projects within the city. Back then, Geet headed a design company and during the day, she worked for her to keep her creativity alive and her back clothed. She liked the work and she quickly found that she was very good at it but it wasn't what she had set out to do.
In the evenings, weekends and any seconds in between, she had worked towards making the de Broglie Dance Academy into something more than a pipe dream. And when that dream finally came together, Geet had began freelancing and she worked for her as a scenic designer, transforming her stage into another world - utopia, at times and at others, hell.
The company they were working for now had loved Geet's work at one of Heer's shows and they set out to pester the dancer into arranging the designer to work for them.
At first, selfishly, Heer had wanted to say no. But she had watched her best friend turn slowly from a person - skin, bones, flesh, blood - into a mere shadow and she'd be damned if she didn't keep her from disappearing altogether.
The opportunity will be good for her, Heer had thought. A chance to get out of the space she was in and another feather in her cap, too.
But now... God, she really wished she had said no.
The trees - tall and menacing - blurred past her as they rounded a hairpin bend. She shivered as the breeze became a chill but preferred it to the suffocation she felt inside the car.
There was still time. Perhaps she should...
Her purse vibrated and pulling out her phone, she saw that Geet was calling her.
Saved by the bell, she forced herself to think and yet, the creeping sense of disappointment she felt was hard to ignore.
She picked up the call. "Geet? Hello?"
"Yes, I'm, uh, sightseeing but the weather's terrible. Oh yeah, I'm already on my way back. About two hours. No, no, not far but I'm planning on doing some shopping first. No, I haven't. I'll eat outside. No, I will. Yes, I swear. Okay, bye."
She cut the call and slumped against the vinyl seat. On days like today, it was exhausting to pretend.
Closing her eyes, she called out to the driver. "Any chance we can turn this thing around?"
