See, my answer would be that cousin = machan because the ones I call machan in Tamil I call them cousin in English.
Brother-in-law is also called Machan.
So, here are the translations -
Cousin - machan (standard) but in extreme situation it can be known as mama/athan (Mora paiyan) This 'mama' isn't the standard 'uncle mama' but 'morai paiyan mama'
Uncle - Mama (standard version of mama)

Yes, we got Visha confused 😆 but I'm not confused anymore thanks to Sumi's answer. That 'Machan' was what I am used to because it is what my family and relatives use so that why I found it a bit surprising that Dharani calls Suresh mama. So it seems like a large chunk of Tamils call their morra payyan 'mama' even though it SHOULD BE machan. Thanks Sumiakka 👏

Oh and one more thing, so can we then agree that Suresh telling Dharani to call him an uncle is an obvious blooper. I think the DM crew had a same confusion as us and just translated the 'mama' into 'uncle' without giving any thoughts.
