Synopsis
Ramkishen's (Alok Nath) eldest son Vivek (Mohnish Behl) is disabled in one hand, because of a childhood accident, in which he had saved his brothers Prem and Vinod. This disability tends to put off most marriageable girls, and so Vivek is still single. Mamta dotes on Vivek, though he is her step-son (he had lost his biological mother"Ramkishen's first wife"in infancy). At Ramkishen and Mamta's wedding anniversary celebrations, a young woman, Sadhna, and her father, Adarsh, are among the guests. Sadhna is impressed by the warmth and solidarity of Vivek's family. Adarsh proposes marriage between Vivek and Sadhna. Vivek fears that he might become a burden on Sadhna because of his disability. She makes it clear that she has wholeheartedly accepted him, and this wins him over. Their wedding is celebrated on a grand scale.
Preeti (Sonali Bendre), a dedicated doctor, and Prem (Salman Khan), an idealistic business student, have loved each other since they were children, but their feelings remain unspoken. The family announces their engagement soon after Vivek and Sadhna's wedding reception. Later, Vivek makes the introverted Prem realize the importance of expressing his feelings. From then on, Prem and Preeti start enjoying romantic moments together. The fun-loving and energetic pair, Vinod and Sapna, also fall in love and get engaged. Ramkishen now feels that he can retire from the business and let his sons take over. He decides to appoint Vivek, the most experienced of his sons, the Managing Director (MD) of his companies.
The twist to the family saga comes when Ramkishen's daughter Sangeeta, her husband Anand and daughter Radhika suddenly become homeless. Anand's elder brother Anurag ousts them from his house and business. Sapna's father Dharamraj and three socialite friends of Mamta convince her that she must compel Ramkishen to divide the house and business equally among his sons, in order to avoid similar complications in her family. Troubled by Sangeeta's misfortune, Mamta believes these arguments and begins to doubt her step-son Vivek's loyalty. This leads to a tangled web of problems and sadness. Sadhna and Vivek decide to go on a self-imposed exile to Rampur (the native village of Ramkishen). Vinod insists on accompanying them. At Vivek's insistence, a reluctant Prem takes over as the MD of the companies. However, Prem makes it clear that he considers Vivek the real leader and himself just a deputy. Preeti and Sapna take care of Sadhna, who is expecting a child.
Meanwhile, the absence of Anand, Sangeeta and Radhika creates a huge vacuum in Anurag's professional as well as domestic life. He realizes his mistake, and his wife Jyoti takes the initiative to call them back. With peace restored in her marital home, Sangeeta now convinces Mamta to reconcile with Vivek and Sadhna. A repentant Mamta rushes to Rampur, just when Sadhna is giving birth to a baby boy. Some time later, Prem and Preeti get married to each other, as do Vinod and Sapna. Vivek takes charge as MD of Ramkishen's companies. At the end, there is a hint that Vivek's disabled hand is beginning to get healed.
