What do TV actors feel about their names not being mentioned in the credits?

There was a time when we watched Smriti Irani opened the doors in the opening track of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi where you were able to read the names of actors on the show along with the show's crew. But in the last 15 years, that has stopped. There are popular characters like Anandi and Jagya, Suraj and Sandhya, Aham and Gopi Bahu, Kagdi, Masa, Baapusa, Manav and Archana Deshmukh, Jethalal and Dayaben Gada, Naitik and Akshara and more such characters who have been entertaining you for quite some now.

But when you see them walking on the streets or accepting awards at award functions, you recognise them only by their character's names. While actors feel that it is not justified that credit lines for actors have stopped on shows, producers have a different story. According to a reliable source, production houses feel let down when inspite of sending an extensive list of their technical team, channels drop those names. Even surnames of popular producers and writers are dropped giving reasons of lack of time. We speak to popular TV actors on this.

Shashank Vyas Known as: Jagya-Jagdish (Balika Vadhu) Shows like Nukkad and Hum Log would have character names given either before or after the show. But that has completely stopped now. Even public functions are about best bahu or best son or best daughter rather than recognising us by our names. But the best part is that people at least recognise me by my character name. It feels good when people call me Jagya, but like the crew, we are also contributing to the show. So, it would be good if sometimes, our names are also mentioned.

Paridhi Sharma Known as: Jodha (Jodha Akbar) I think it is always good that a character gets its due recognition and names are given to characters on a show. An actor shapes a character and not the other way round. Initially, maybe one would be okay about it, but gradually, it becomes pertinent that names are displayed on shows if you want recognition.

Karan Mehra Known as: Naitik (Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai) Abroad, characters are known because of the actors playing them, because they are credited. Here, only the production house and those behind the scenes are mentioned before the show starts. Maybe they are trying to popularise the characters. Our show completed 1250-plus episodes but our names have never been telecast on the show!

Chandni Bhagwanani Known as: Amita (Amita ka Amit) Most of the times, I am known as Amita rather than by my real name. My real identity seems to be getting lost in the process. I know the character has connected with the audiences but along with other team members, if they were to give our names on the show, it would really help. Otherwise, I am forever recognised as 'that girl who works in Amita Ka Amit'.

Thanks for sharing...

When you touch hearts with your acting and impress people they will do anything to know your name.I loved your acting shashank but didn't know your name,i don't used to use internet that time, but used it to search your name as I wanted to know whats the name of this brilliant actor. So its not an issue. It would have been better if names were shown but if its not shown doesn't matter much...

Shashank has raised a valid point that these days most TV award shows are mainly about Best Bahu or Best Saas, etc rather than about the actors' performances and its highly unfair to them.

Wish they had some way of showing the cast list in the end credits at least the way they do for western shows.

I think it's a valid issue. Audience may recall an actor by his character or serial he was part of. But still it is duty of PH and channel to credit actors with their actual names. Till 2001 actors' names used to be shown - all actors not just leads. Later they ignored it and spent time on precaps, ads or other promos than credits.

Shashank's point about functions and award shows is valid. Why does it have to be favorite jodi or bahu? SP's awards even have favorite sautan category (most ridiculous thing ever! 🤢 ). And why should awards be given to Anandi/Shiv/Jagya/Bhairon? Why no mention of actors?

I see when they organise road shows and events to have stars interact with public, there also they tell public that their Anandi or Gopi vau or Jethalal are coming. Poor actors have to masquerade as characters, same look, clothes and accent. They can't speak or behave normally anymore.

No wonder they then look for offers of reality shows and other events to make their own identity known. And some feel so limited that they give up TV altogether!

Of course it's nice to be known by character that shows how famous serial is and what impact you've made performing that character. But actors must be given their due.

Characters in other serials are still okay. It especially feels weird when actors from mytho or historical shows are casually called Mahadev or Maharana Pratap or Akbar. Ordinary people are foolish if they do it or perhaps ignorant but at least media should stop using character names for actors! It's stupid how Mohit Raina is called "Mohit Mahadev Raina" at times be media.

Headlines and stories of shows like SBB/SBS are even worse. No mention of actors. Only characters. "Jodha ki kitty party" etc. are so useless kind of headlines!

They definitely need to change!
