A Missed Opportunity
Chapter 5
Twist in the Tale -
Zoya's POV
"Please Tanveer. Control yourself," Uncle Feroz reprimanded as he would have done to a fifteen year old girl.
Tanveer was getting more hysterical and loud. She was starting to be rude to the guests instead of getting a control on herself. The woman who was by her side was now getting desperate and Uncle Feroz was trying to get a hold on Tanveer.
Uncle Feroz - "Are you crazy?"
Tanveer - "I am not. What the hell is she doing here at the funeral? I made sure the news of the death was not leaked to the media just because I didn't want to see HER
Ohhk. So, now she doesn't even want to take my name, and I was thinking may be the hatred may have lessened a little.
She was spitting venom in my direction and causing raised eyebrows among the crowd. Already few people who I could recognise, have been asking why I have not visited my FAMILY
Uncle Feroz - "Tanveer, behave yourself. She is your sister. Don't create scene in front of guests. Zoya has all the right to be here"
Tanveer - "Nooo. Just tell her to get the hell out of here. She has never been part of our family, she's not welcome here."
I stood there listening to continuous ranting of Tanveer. I had known I was hated by my step mother Razia and Tanveer but this was getting on my nerve a little. At first I had ignored her. She was interrupting my prayers. I was concentrating on sending a silent plea to Allah to forgive my father for the man he had been, hoping that now he might get some kind of salvation. By then Tanveer started accusing me for Razia's death and even Mr. Siddiqui's.
I was done listening to her allegations and I was not in any mood to create scene in front of all the guests. So I decided to make a move. I had attended Mr. Gaffur Siddiqui's Funeral. Done with my duty. It was best that I should make a move
Ignore Tanveer and her drama; she would cool off on her own anyway when her temper had calmed down. As for her making a scene and embarrassing her in front of the other guests, I did not even know most of the people present since I had been off their lives for the past three years. It had been more appropriate for me to sit back and let Tanveer take the fake sympathies. I know many of these people would be happy that GAFFUR Siddiqui has died. They just wearing a mask of sympathy so as to maintain formal relationship with Siddiqui Empire.
And I did not care about Tanveer anymore to bother about her sorrow or grief. Tanveer was most probably putting on a show for the others, not that she had not loved their "Abbu". But she had always been a selfish person, like her mother Razia.
"Zoya, Zoya" Uncle Feroz called after me when I was leaving. I waited for Uncle Feroz to reach me at the end of the alley and just then I caught sight of Asad staring our way like a predator ready to pounce. I sighed. I had no idea what he was doing here.
In the beginning I had not known that Asad had hated my father.
The first time Asad and Gaffur Siddiqui had met was only after 7-8 months of our romance and I had initially thought that my father would hate Asad. But instead, the former had taken a real liking of Asad Ahmed Khan right from their first meeting.
I still remember the day the two of them had met as if it was yesterday; Asad had been tense for the first meeting; We have been waiting for Mr. Siddiqui in his office. How Ironic I feel more comfortable in calling the man as Mr. Siddiqui than Abbu
"What have you told him about me?" he queried for the umpteenth time fidgeting on the sofa.
I had sighed and replied, "How many times do I have to tell you Asad? I told him absolutely nothing apart from your name."
Asad - "But he must have questioned you. About me. My parents. My background."
He was sounding weird.
Zoya - "No, he hadn't. He only told me to bring you to his office at ten o'clock sharp the following Thursday of the week."
Asad - "Yah but why at the office? Why not at the house?"
"My father is somewhat...authoritative," I was hesitant.. not knowing how to describe my father. Then had decided to lighten the mood as I was very nervous. "You should be grateful by the way for having an appointment with Gaffur Siddiqui within one week. He's a busy man."
"Yes I can see," Asad had responded sounding a bit cold. I had shrugged the feeling attributing to the long wait. I had tried to hit him playfully when they had heard a throat clearing at the door. It had made them both jump like two guilty teenagers.
GS - "Asad Ahmed Khan, isn't it?"
Asad had hurriedly gotten up his seat to shake hands with my father who had looked down at him like he was some menace.
AAK - "Yes, sir, Son of Rashid Ahmed Khan.
At that, Mr. Siddiqui arched his eyebrows.
GS - "I had guessed so. Zoya, will you leave us alone for a while?"
I was surprised at first and hesitant to leave Asad at my father's mercy. But Asad nodded at me giving me some courage to leave.
All I did was to tell him that I love him and I will wait outside the office for him. I was sh!t scared of the entire drama going on in Mr. Siddiqui's cabin. How nave I was!!!!
I was speechless when I saw what was happening in front of me. Twenty minutes later, the two men had emerged from the room shaking hands. Mr. Siddiqui walked upto me and gave me a genuine smile. I guess that was his first and last one reserved for me...
So, Mr. Siddiqui had approved. It had been hard to believe. I pestered Asad on our way home to know what had happened in Mr. Siddiqui's office but he had been enigmatic about the whole affair. I was cloud nine on that day and had believed that Mr. Siddiqui was finally becoming the "Abbu" she missed in him.
I was brought back to the present with a jerk as I felt a hand on my elbow. It was Uncle Feroz who sounded worried.
"Zoya? Are you alright? You look pale."
Zoya - "I'm fine Uncle. I am just tired. I had to leave early if I was to make it for the funeral."
Uncle Feroz was apologetic.
UF - "I'm sorry beta. I did not even know your number. I..."
Zoya - "That's okay Uncle Feroz. Don't worry about it. You have it now. You can contact me whenever you want."
UF - "Contact you? Are you leaving back for Mumbai already?"
Zoya - "No, I am staying at a hotel for the day and I will return back to Mumbai in a day or two."
UF - "A hotel? Are you of your mind? Why not at the Siddiqui Mansion? He was your father too dammit!"
Zoya - "Yes, I know. But you've seen how Tanveer had been behaving at the funeral? When we're alone, she's worse and am afraid I am not in the mood to tolerate her right now."
UF - "Of course. But cancel your bookings and come at my house."
"Uncle Fer..," I started to protest but swallowed my words at the look I received from my uncle. He had been the only person kind to me when I had been suffering atrocities from the step family, father included.
"Alright," Zoya conceded too tired to fight.
"That's my Zoyal! You can drive with me tomorrow for the opening of the will then."
"Gaffur Siddiqui had been a close friend of mine for the past twenty years. Now that he is no longer among us, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family and close friends ," Uncle Feroz announced in the study of the dead man. Since Gaffur Siddiqui had not never been close to his family, there were only a few number of persons present. Me and Tanveer, the closest family he ever had. A distant cousin, an even more distant aunt and a business partner mentioned in the will.
"I, Gaffur Siddiqui ...," read out Uncle Feroz to everyone present in the room. The three guests were not even listening knowing that their gain was minimal.
I was listening with half an ear only, being present only because Uncle Feroz had insisted. I already knew that the major part of Gaffur Siddiqui's dynasty would go to Tanveer, his beloved daughter. Ironical was fate that such a man did not have a son to continue his lineage.
When the speech was finally over, I relaxed having understood the basics of the will and was already thinking about getting back to my life. She had no business here anymore. Then it started.
"Why the hell had he given her the house?" Tanveer wailed angrily at Uncle Feroz.
UF - "Tanveer, please don't start again now."
Tanveer - "Don't stop me Uncle Feroz. I am not a child anymore."
"Then don't behave like one anymore," mimicked Uncle Feroz in the same tone which made me bit back a smile.
Tanveer - "How dare you? You bloody..."
"Enough!" shouted Feroz Mirza. "Tanveer, if you don't agree with the will please feel free to contest it in a court."
Tanveer sobered at that and stomped out of the study angrily shouting . "I am getting the hell out of here!"
Uncle Feroz shook his head and dismissed everyone. Except me.
UF - "I can't believe how spoilt she's become. Her mother had conceded to her every fantasy when she was a kid and she's getting worse. When I look at you I can't believe you two are sisters."
Zoya - "STEP SISTERS...Uncle Feroz and Mr. SIDDIQUE always preferred Tanveer to me. All his love was only for his only ONE daughter". With That I shrugged. That was my defence mechanism to hide my pain.
Zoya - "So, basically I am the owner of Siddiqui Mansion and owner of nineteen percent shares of his company?"
UF - "I know nineteen is not enough as compared to the forty percent of your sister. I had tried to.."
Zoya - "No, no. I never meant that. In fact, I am surprised that he had given me so much. I really felt that I would be left out of the will completely."
UF - "Zoya, how can you think like that? Gaffur did love you in his own way, you know."
Zoya - "yeah yeah, Uncle Feroz. He loved me so much that he was ready to Sale to Asad Ahmed Khan", Sarcasm clearly visible in my voice.
UF - "Please Zoya. Don't think like that..
I muttered a "whatever." It was too late to discuss those things now anyway.
UF - "I am sorry. Tanveer got the lion's shares with two penthouses in Mumbai, all his lands, the Indore Mansion and the cars."
Zoya - "Oh, I don't mind. But tell me uncle, who the hell is Humaira Qureshi who has inherited Sheikh Villa and Shah Factory? What are those properties anyway?"
At that, Uncle Feroz appeared uncomfortable. "Uhhhm... I don't know if I'm supposed to tell you... but what the hell? The old man is dead now and he had done enough damage in this life."
At his severe tone, I felt a sense of dread; I was sure I was not going to like what followed. Call that a hunch or something.
"Go on," I whispered in a voice I could not recognize as my own.
UF - "You know your father was a con man, right?"
I nodded already knowing the answer. "So Sheikh and Shah are the properties of his mistresses?"
"Not mistresses. Ex-wife and mistress. Aabida Shah was his latest ex-wife and her father has the factory on her name."
Officially, my father had three wives and a string of mistresses. All of them heiresses, rich as sin. Of course they had been carefully chosen targets by him and his college sweetheart, Razia. Both had worked together as con men to usurp the heiresses of their properties and then to leave then heart broken. When he had been found out among the rich, it had already been too late; he had acquired enough wealth to sustain himself and his vices.
I had known about my father's past but had never dug into details since I had ashamed of who my father had been. The kind of a man he was. Unluckily, I didn't have much choice but to love him just because he was my father.
"Your... late father had stolen the money of two of his ex-wives; Aalia Malik and Aabida Shah. His wife Aalia Malik had not been very rich and all properties acquired from that marriage had been dissolved into investments for your father's empire."
I nodded again feeling numb. She had had enough, she put up a hand to stop him but he went on.
UF - "Wait, there's more. Much more. Please sit down."
Like an robot, I fell down on the sofa nearby with my hands firmly closed into fists controlling the anger and disappointment with my father.
"Errr... Sheikh Villa belonged to one of his mistresses, then Dilshaad Sheikh, whos name after marriage was DILSHAAD AHMED KHAN"
