Chapter 6 - Two Sides of A Coin

Asad's POV - (This is just at the funeral, I don't know what that ritual in Muslim religion called so I am calling it Funeral)

"There she was. Finally. Stupid woman. She must have taken a very early morning flight. They would have reached within an hour had she not refused to fly with me in my private jet. Not that I blamed her. Considering the proximity we encountered last night, I am sure she would avoid me like plague now", Asad smiled inwardly to that last thought.

"AND What the hell was that???? What had taken over you to suggest she flew with you when you knew already that she would say a clear-cut no. For someone who was supposed to hate her, you are not doing a good job of it", his mind scolded him. However hard he tried, he still could not get the almost kiss out of his mind; her scent had drawn him as if his will had a mind of its own. It had always been like that with Zoya, he had never been able to stay away. Even after all that happened between them. Damn her to hell and back.

Of their own accord, my eyes looked out for her among the crowd. I was not here to mourn the dead person being buried. Allah knew I hated the man enough he could have killed him with my bare hands had I been given the opportunity. I was here to finish what I had started three years ago. Finally, I am able to admit to myself that I was attending the funeral to make peace with myself and I REALLY wanted to make peace with Zoya. Not that she would ever forgive me. No for that I was sure that Ms. Farooqui was the kind of person who loved deeply and hated even more deeply.

What had surprised me however was that she had not appeared devastated when I had given her the so awaited news? Instead, she had remained ice queen and had instantly reversed the situation. I am too intrigued with the new Zoya too damn much for my own good. "Was she simply good at hiding her emotions or was she totally unconcerned about her father's death?", my mind was not allowing me to rest.

I am not able to make out what she was thinking right now. She was looking ethereal in a simple black anarkali dress which instead of toning down her beauty accentuated it. Black had always made her look fairer and had highlighted her eyes. Not that they were visible now. She was wearing shades and he could not make out her expression. Her face was as if carved from stone and she had not greeted anyone except for their family's lawyer Feroz Mirza. She had not bothered saying hi to her only sister who was looking forlorn and about to break down.

I actually never really liked her entire family. Specially her father and her half-sister Tanveer. During our courtship period I had met Tanveer once or twice only. When I first saw her I found her real tehzeeb-afta girl. But all my presumptions were were dusted when she tried to seduce me for the first time when I had visited their house. I could never forget how she made my dinner a living hell for me with her leg caressing mine under the table. The mere thought is giving me nausea. She tried to that 2-3 times but I repulsion for her stronger that my other objective. So I had chosen to avoid her, thinking that extracting revenge from one Siddiqui daughter was enough.

From what I had gathered, Zoya had not been close to the sister as well. But Zoya had never talked about her family when she had been with him. However hard he had tried to extract certain information from her, she had always changed the subject instead. It had infuriated me. I was forced to hire IMRAN, a private investigator to get the information I needed.

The information about my ancestor's house. The one Gaffur Siddiqui had stolen from my mother. It had been a mansion which had belonged to THE Sheikh's generations for the last two centuries, my mother's family. Dilshaad had been foolish enough to fall in the trap of a man like Siddiqui.

The shocking truth of my life was that my mother Dilshaad Ahmed Khan had an affair with Gaffur Siddiqui even when she was mother of 13 year old boy... ME. Her heart broken when she had learnt that the man was only using her for money. After stealing all of her property, he had dumped her as fast as dirt and Dilshaad had been too shocked to react. It had been too late for her to return to her real family... to me and Abbu.

Rashid Ahmed Khan, my father had been crushed and humiliated when he had first found out about the affair. Still he had been ready to forgive her and take her back, prepared to forget about the whole nightmare. Ammi however had not been on the same frequency as Abbu. She had proclaimed herself to be in love with Gaffur and had refused to get back home, accepting to leave me, her only son behind. It had been a revelation to both me and Abbu. Even if we never understood how a woman could hurt us, so, we both had retreated in our shell, trying not to show each other how much it had affected us individually.

At fifteen, Asad had been so devastated when he had learnt the truth about his mother. What woman would leave her family behind only for another man who was not even worth a rupee? It had taught him at such a tender age that women were made for treachery and deception only. Asad could still not make out if he pitied the woman or blamed her for being too weak to resist a fling. But she had finally learnt the truth about the man who had been married to his current wife, Razia at that time.

It was then he had vowed to himself that if Gaffur Siddiqui had a daughter, he would do exactly the same thing to her just to prove his theory of women and also to make that bas***d feel the same he and his abbu had felt. Betrayed, alone and heart broken. So, his quest had begun then, at the age of fifteen. He began plotting for his REVENGE.

Zoya's POV -

Time stopped. There was a buzz in my ears but I could not hear or see anything. For a moment, I thought that I was hallucinating, maybe it was a bad dream and I would wake up in a few moments. Or maybe I was wrong. So many Khan's existed in this world and they did not even knew them all, right? And Dilshaad was a very comman name right???? Dilshaad Khan... Very Very common... I think I am going to faint!!!!

However, by the look on Feroz Mirza's face, I did not even have to confirm the question which was on the tip of my tongue but which I wasn't able to voice out. He nodded looking at me to confirm the answer my question that he must be seeing in my eyes and my worst fear came true.

"Ya Allah, Why he had to do this???? Why was he so so inhuman!!!", Zoya thought to herself cursing her father.

"Zoya, are you alright?" Uncle Feroz asked her worriedly.

"Yes," I replied after some time. "Tell me everything. I need to know everything. Tell me the truth about my bas***d father." I was unbelievably calm for someone whose world was in total chaos.

UF - "Same thing happened to Dilshaad also. Gaffur robbed her company and dissolved it into investments for his company, By that time, Siddiqui empire was already doing well and he had no need to sell the Sheikh properties. And the rest that followed."

"So, why did he continue to steal them?" Zoya asked in a small voice, trying to ignore the headache that was starting to grow.

UF - "A habit I suppose. Or security. In case Siddiqui Empire failed. But luckily, it flourished and he had no need for other frauds and married Razia as had been the plan since the beginning. Except..."

"Except?" Zoya asked.

He took a deep breath before saying "Except when your father got married to Razia, Dilshaad Ahmed Khan committed suicide."

Shocked was too weak a word to describe what I felt at that moment. Flabbergasted was more likely. Involuntarily, my hand went to my throat to stop the bile of nausea. I had never got a hint from Asad in the past that his mother had committed suicide. Never had he even mentioned his mother except that she was dead.

For the past three years, I had been cursing myself having misunderstood the reason behind mine and Asad's break-up. For the past three years, she had believed that Asad had made a business deal with my father and right before the marriage, the deal had went off.

I'd never had a hint that Asad had been after her to avenge his mother. Not even once. Nobody had told me the truth, not even her so called "FATHER" who, I was sure now, had been aware of the truth. And had been ready to trade me off for another takeover of the Khans' enterprise this time. I had overheard a conversation between them myself a week before the wedding day. Everything made sense now.

"Mr. Siddiqui, I've had enough of your bargains. I told you that I am ready to offer only twenty percent of my shares," she had heard Asad shout in Mr. Siddiqui's study.

GS - "Now, I need more. Your father is the owner of forty plus percent and if you give me your twenty percent, you will become the biggest shareholder when you inherit. And don't forget Zoya, she is an asset you cannot ignore in this deal."

Asset? Deal? Bargain? In return for what? I had been so confused and had decided to ask Asad later about the business proposal but when I heard his next words, they stopped me in my track.

AAK - "I am marrying your daughter, Mr. Siddiqui as we had agreed to and giving you twenty percent shares in return and get back my mansion. That was the initial deal and it is non-negotiable."

GS - "Oh come now, Asad. You don't know Gaffur Siddiqui. No one gets away with a profitable deal with me. You should know that better than anyone."

"You bas***d! You had every intention of asking for more ever since the beginning haven't you?" Asad had asked before delivering the final blow. "And I had to tolerate your bas***d daughter for one year before you tell me that you want more now?"

I didn't want to hear anything more. Numb, I had run to the garden in a far corner, too stunned to cry or react. How long I had sat there I never knew. When finally, I had realized that Asad had only tolerated me for the sake of a business deal, I had broken down into tears. The following week, I had been a zombie, with Asad refusing to meet me when I had wanted to demand an explanation.

Still like a fool in love, I had not been able to tell my grief to anyone else since no one had been close to me. No one had cared enough to notice my pain. Tanveer and Razia had taken over the preparations of the wedding and I had let them too shocked to protest.

At a loss of what to do and out of desperation, I had still worn my wedding lehenga putting up a brave face, her heart convinced that Asad would show up. But he never had the intention of marrying her ever since the beginning.

Mortified now at Mr. Siddiqui's tomfooleries, I stared at uncle Feroz who had known everything since the beginning but had been bound by his friendship and profession to keep his mouth shut. But how can a man live with all that on his conscience?

Zoya realized it was too easy to put the blame on her uncle when her father and step mother were the real culprits. And Asad? My heart ached for him knowing what he had been through. It didn't excuse what he had done to me; that was for sure. One can never right a wrong with another wrong.

But still I could understand now, the betrayal and the dupe.

It was easier for me now to live with the fact that she had been left at the Nikaah because my father had been such a waste of human life. It had not been my fault that Asad had not loved me. It was not because I had failed him or I was not good enough.

My only fault was that I was born to a man named Gaffur Siddiqui.

Asad's POV -

Touching my temples I was felt irritated with crying and shrieking of Tanveer like a mad woman. Another woman was trying her best to calm her down but she was in hysterics. I really hoped that she would not be the one inheriting Sheikh Properties.

It was only the mansion I am after, the only thing I could get back. The rest had been my mother's shares of Sheikh Company which the bas***d had dissolved in his own company when he had carried out a merger of both companies. Dilshaad had been the owner of fifty two percent of the company shareholders and had lost all to Gaffur when she had signed on a document without reading what it had been about.

Eventually, Sheikh's name had died out leaving only the Siddiqui Empire. So the rest of the loss was not really tangible and I would never be able to get back Sheikh's running as it had been. To compensate for that, I had been buying shares from Siddiqui Enterprise from time and then but I was still owner of seven percent. Not good enough but still a start. It was not easy to buy out the shares of such a prestigious company BUT I would achieve it little by little.

Thankfully, Rashid Ahmed Khan had been rich enough and Asad had inherited all of his property and company. It had never been a question of money ever since the beginning. I did not need the money. It was all about lost pride and deceit, getting back what had been mine all the time. I could not undo the past, could not return my mother back but I will have everything else. Even if it was the last thing I achieved in my life.

I was damned if he would let Mr. Siddiqui win now, after his death. I would destroy all Mr. Siddiqui had achieved bit by bit until I could get back my due. Even if it meant destroying his daughters on the way. Stopping now would be like losing thirteen of his life for nothing. Seventeen years of hatred, damage and self-loathing. I owed that to the memories of my parents.

I had failed to get back my mother's properties all those past years and I am back with a plan after Gaffur's's death. I WILL MARRY THE DAUGHTER WHO INHERITS THE SHEIKH MANSION!!

Zoya's - POV

"Zoya?" Uncle Feroz called. "Please don't blame me. I could never have told you the truth while he was alive. You know how ruthless he was, he would have made my life hell."

I opened my mouth but no sound came out.

UF - "I am so sorry, beta. I know you have been hurt badly in the past and you never really understood Asad... I mean what happened. I should have told you three years ago but I chose not to. I hope you forgive me."

Still, nothing came out of my mouth as I blinked back tears of repressed feelings of desperation and self-reproach. Forgive him? I would maybe in another life. As if I hadn't had enough shocks for the day to last me a lifetime, Feroz Mirza had another bomb coming. He was hell-bent on getting everything out of his conscience. He added the last sentence for good measure, another blow delivered which resounded in the study like the announcement of a dead person.

"As for Humaira Qureshi, well she is your other half-sister."
