Paresh Rawal confirms Malamaal Weekly 2, cult comedy set for comeback

Actor Paresh Rawal has confirmed that a sequel to the 2006 comedy Malamaal Weekly is officially in the works. The film, which went on to gain a loyal following over the years, is now set to return with a second instalment.

Amid recent speculation about a follow up, Rawal addressed the rumours in a conversation with Hindustan Times. He put the buzz to rest with a clear statement. “Yes, it is true. I am doing the film." With this confirmation, discussions around Malamaal Weekly 2 have gathered momentum among fans of the original.

Directed by Priyadarshan, the first film released in 2006 and surprised trade observers with its strong box office performance. Mounted on a modest budget of around Rs 6 to 7 crore, the comedy went on to collect approximately Rs 42.76 crore. At a time when star driven projects dominated theatres, the film proved that content led humour could also draw audiences in large numbers.

The ensemble cast featured Rawal alongside Om Puri, Riteish Deshmukh, Arbaaz Khan, Reema Sen, Rajpal Yadav, Sudha Chandran, Asrani and Shakti Kapoor among others. Their collective performances and comic timing contributed significantly to the film’s recall value.

The story revolved around a lottery ticket and the chaos that followed in a small village, blending situational humour with satire. Priyadarshan’s direction played a key role in shaping the narrative, balancing absurdity with grounded characters. The film was later adapted in Malayalam as Aamayum Muyalum, further extending its reach.
